So when it came time in the opening ceremony for something that has been widely interpreted as a tribute to the 52 victims of terrorist attacks in London in 2005, it's not shocking NBC didn't see lingering on that as helping its overall marketing effort. When asked why NBC didn't show the memorial, NBC spokesman Greg Hughes on Saturday said only that "our programming is tailored for the U.S. audience. It's a tribute to (opening ceremony producer) Danny Boyle (director of the ceremony) that it required so little editing."
(from http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/london/story/2012-07-28/NBC-tribute-to-victims-Michael-Phelps/56556494/1)
That was what the inane Ryan Seacrest was there for. NBC inserted his interview with Michael Phelps where this tribute (part of the Opening Ceremony) was to be. Speaking of Seacrest--he really needs a big-boy suit and haircut. He apparently thinks he's the second-coming of Dick Clark (and I guess has been told as much). Try a new schtick, guy. Please.
Correction from yesterday: There's live streaming of certain things--most if not all swimming is taped to show in primetime (US anyway).
I watched a little boxing--men's, but women's boxing is in this Olympics. In this Olympics the women beach volleyball contestants get to wear something other than bikinis. The top Americans (Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh) have decided to opt for bikinis--at least the bottoms, and they had long sleeves on for matches yesterday. I don't know about you, but tugging my pants down to cover my butt every 10 seconds isn't my idea of comfort. But that's me. Heck, I'd be out there with granny panties and bloomers at the size and "cellulitage" of my current butt.
In previous Olympics I always wanted to see the beach volleyball men similarly dressed--they don't think that would get ratings? I mean they always tailor these Games to attract more women. Oh well--maybe next time:-)
Speaking of tugging pants--if you've ever seen a tennis match with Rafael Nadal, he does it before every point--I guess he essentially gets a mini-wedgie (backside) every time a point is finished. I'm not kidding. (Maybe there's a wedgie entity haunting him--haha!) I guess what starts as a little thing eventually becomes a habit and then part of a ritual that MUST be done, for whatever reason. We're all only human--right!?! It's just that if you or I do this, millions of people probably aren't watching.
I got a little caught up in watching the qualifying for the men's gymnastics--I really like John Orozco--great story. I know that there probably won't be the type of payoff for him or any of the gymnasts should they triumph in the end. But I guess like the short-track skater Apolo Ohno, he can do "Dancing With The Stars" if worst comes to worst--yikes. You had to see his Mother covering her eyes in the stands, but I think she'd rather watch her son dance rather than vault. He sustained an awful Achille's tendon injury at some point while vaulting. I doubt if any American is going to cash in like Michael Phelps has. Who knows.
As an aside the only time I followed DWTS was when bull rider/cowboy Ty Murray (singer Jewel's husband) was competing. I still laugh to think about it, but he really hung in there--he came in fourth place. You wouldn't think a cowboy (in his prime he won the All-Around Cowboy--National Finals Rodeo seven times) would excel at ballroom dancing, but he really took it on as a challenge. Knowing some of the injuries he's had as a result of rodeo riding, etc--he's kind of an inspiration. Yeah, he's a cowboy, but . . . he has a little of that Renaissance Man going on. Once upon a time he did some gymnastics to enhance his ability to balance for bull riding.
There's a Bulgarian gymnast, Jordan Jovtchev (39 yrs old) who qualified for Rings (gymnastics). No Americans qualified--I assume at least one tried--I don't know. He was featured a bit on the coverage last night. He lived in the US for awhile training gymnasts in Norman, OK and has since moved back to Bulgaria to try to revive a national gymnastic program. He competed on something called SASUKE ("wikipedia" it if you like). Apparently it's one of those "Ninja Warrior/American Gladiator" type shows in Japan. It seems like it showed on some channel where I happened to see a few years ago--very intense and serious and lots of falling from heights if you don't succeed. So I guess he's quite the specimen. This is his 5th or 6th Olympics.

I'm down .2 pound on my weigh-in--I'll just have to live with it--haha!
So I started to watch the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics, and I just wanted Meredith Vieira and Matt A**hole to shut the HELL up--everything they had to offer was either unnecessary or could have been captioned. I hope the rest of the world didn't have to hear them. I initially thought it was a bit cheesy and then as it went on I really thought of it as art--what do I know;-) It's something that will stand the test of time. (I don't even remember the Atlanta Olympics Opening Ceremony--I may have not even watched it.)
I thought the tribute to the UK's National Health Service was wonderful. Of course the two jerks (mentioned above) just had to pull US politics into their commentary--as if to say, "Hey all you conservative Republicans, please don't change the channel!" Some things should be left alone. Danny Boyle--the producer/director of the extravaganza I do NOT think intended it as anything but a huge tribute and BIG BIG thank you to the longevity of something that if it weren't in place . . . WELL uh, we have in the US what happens when a government and its people (voters who consistently vote against their own interests) can't even get it's head straight on something as important as BASIC healthcare for all.
Bravo Danny Boyle!
I still have a bit of it DVRd to watch--I hope I got The Queen's portion. Today and tomorrow I'll be following Dana Vollmer in her pursuit of gold in the 100m Butterfly--she broke the Am record in her qualifying heat earlier. The semifinals are later tonight and finals tomorrow--I think both will be on in the US on NBC. Missy Franklin--is another US swimmer I'll follow. She's 17 and has a 76-inch wingspan (she's 6'1). I measured my "wingspan" and it's about 62 inches. Here's an article including some tidbits about Missy and the article has one or two videos as well: Bodies Built for Gold
There are always some cool, interesting stories and people to emerge. Michael Phelps is pretty much a professional at this point--he's set for life financially. I know it wasn't that way for him before. But he deserves to be a footnote at this point. Same with the basketball--all the teams are all highly-paid professionals. Once upon a time that was simply forbidden in the Olympics.
There's live streaming of everything. I'm also looking forward to watching some Trampoline events. I'm sure I'll find some other things to glom onto. I always think I won't care much and then that all gets thrown out the window. Like Synchronized Swimming--it has to be one of the most difficult things just with breathing and then you have to be artistic, precise and nearly perfect to get anywhere on the journey to a medal.
In HS in the summers a few of us used to get together and pretend we were a synchronized swimming team--haha! I think we got a few laughs because our efforts were ONLY hilarious!

When I buy cookies I eat just four and throw the rest away. but first I spray them with Raid* so I won't dig them out of the garbage later. Be careful, though, because that Raid really doesn't taste that bad. --Janette Barber
*Raid is a brand of insecticide in the US (at least).

Ah, with no fanfare I've just passed 6000 hrs on my CPAP machine.
I was going over the ironclad things I do as routine every day. There are 160 days left in 2012 including today. Something to think about--tweaking the same old routine. I dug out my copy of Overcoming Overeating and I think I may delve a little more into it than I did originally. I adopted some things from it that I still use today. I'd just like to speak to what's in it more comprehensively than just the parts I use.
With the upcoming Summer Olympics (in the spirit of that), here's an inspiring and captivating story of a Texas HS freshman pole vaulter, Charlotte Brown. She just happens to be legally blind. I'd say, "You gotta watch this!" To myself I say, me--problems, motivation (can't find it half the time)--what are those, for crying out loud! She really is quite something--a little over 8 min long.

I met that walking challenge (still pinching myself at how well I did) and I really need to get on the ball with another one. I'm getting stale even after just a short while. I'm going to change the dates below--probably to September.
I spotted a NordicTrack skier at a local 2nd hand store. After seeing it outside about five times I finally stopped in and asked about it. It appears to be in good shape--oh, I bought it because it was only $20. I'm going to get it all set up just to see if it works as is, but I'll probably use it for parts. Mine is all-in-all in pretty good shape and I have an online supplier for the parts that have to be replaced from time to time. The hip pad online is $40 so just for that this was a good purchase--it appears to be nearly unused. (Guess we'll see about that.) Mine is a bit ripped up, but as good as new (for my purposes) taped up with a few strips of clear duct tape.

Maybe it was my nordic track that I had to leave in switzerland that somehow made it to the usa? Just kidding... I remember your telling me about getting parts on line, which I did. In the end I left it in switzerland (at the salvation army)because it was going unused and it was so dam heavy and I needed to lighten up... Enjoy the new equipment! And GREAT job on the walking challenge!

I'm down a bit on my Saturday weigh-in:-)
I've had no ill effects from the walking, meaning nothing's hurting while I walk. I haven't been sore, though taking a magnesium supplement I think helps in that matter. I've been taking the magnesium for a few months--I honestly think it's half placebo effect and half actual effect. This stepped up walking has been a good challenge. I've got a little tightness in my L Achilles tendon area. It makes perfect sense, and I guess time will tell if it's temporary. I guess I'll know after I start doing some wt trng (calf raises in particular).
It's not pain and it isn't something I've ever had before. I've dialed my minutes back and it seems to be subsiding. My shoes are quite fresh--wouldn't be able to do the amount of walking I have without them--THANKS SHOES:-)

What a beating of a night (before last). I felt no need to push myself yesterday, and luckily I didn't have to very much. I'm challenging my status quo enough without killing myself--haha! Learning, falling, learning again--what's new about that:-)
In gasoline price news. Just when it neared less than $3/gallon, it skyrocketed--I'm sure it did the same all over the US. So I noticed a bit of a gas war yesterday, but I didn't need gas. Today there was a place with $3.16/gal and $3.35 across the street. I went to the cheaper one, pumped my gas and the price jumped 10 cents just as I was driving away. Crazy.

The walking is going great. Funny how I completely forgot about that period of time where it seemed I couldn't perspire no matter what I did (late 2010). Not a problem now--it's been humid-hot, breezy-hot, plain old hot and breezy cooler-than-normal and I've done GREAT in all phases of whatever it happens to be. I looooove it!
