I'm back. My son visited this weekend so, of course, everything will pretty much stop and center around him. I still did my six glasses and avoided sodas. Hope everyone had a successful weekend. I didn't really exercise, but I did wald the dog. I just can't seem to find the motivation, but I'll work on it.

Progress as of today: 1.4 lbs lost so far, only 59.6 lbs to go!

Glad you're back! I didn't post since Thursday until today either haha. Tomorrow I foresee an extra boost of inspiration and motivation coming your way! Keep up the good work with water and avoiding the sugar-filled sodas. That's one of the hardest habits to break these days...wish I could get my husband to do so! RYC: My diary is together--I suffer from a background in the publishing biz. Everything else--I can't even call it "together."

Keep at this--you won't regret losing 5, then 10 and so forth. You WILL feel better. Don't give up! Also, you may want to take measurements. I will be measuring tomorrow for the first time in awhile and sometimes if the scale doesn't reflect a loss--your looser clothes or the measurements will!

I don't know if it's the new diet (I was trying to switch a lot of my white foods to whole grains) and water or if I have a stomach bug. I was really tired when I got home from work yesterday, so I suspect it's a bug. I have made it a sick day today and am camped on the couch sipping water to see how that goes. Not ready for food yet. Got caught up on diaries and forums. I want to get a pic of myself and do it every 5 pounds so I can see the metamorphosis.

Feeling better. Next entry is a pic of my bestest of buddies, TR, a Cairn Terrier. He's with me through thick and thin, unconditionally. Love you buddy! I have worked and worked with the picture, it's huge and I don't know how to make it smaller.

PS again...If you've got some chicken noodle soup, that might help. Sometimes our systems might preferr white foods over whole grains if we're not real used to the whole grains, unless we do it a VERY little at a time...I've tried over and over switching from white bread to whole grain and it never agrees with me.

Sorry to hear you are under the weather. I agree with Maria and would suggest a slow transition to whole grains once you are feeling better and if you still want to try to do that. Hope you feel better and have a much better day tomorrow! The 5 pounds metamorphosis tracking sounds like a good idea!

Aww I just now scrolled down to see the doggy picture my second visit to your diary! TR is just utterly ADORABLE! I used to have a Yorkshire Terrier named Frisky! We had him my whole life until I was about 17 and he was the best dog! Aww that reminded me of him and made my night =)

aww. you probably have a slight stomach virus. fibrous foods don't generally give you a cramping stomachache...and if they do, the food will probably get out of your system soon after and then you will feeel better. so, its probably a virus!

Whoa, it hurt, getting back into the groove at work, and sooo cold today. After having temps around the 50s and 70s, 14 felt like stepping into a deep freeze. All I could think was that my body has to work harder to stay warm. I'm sure I was burning extra calories when I had to go out. I am so proud of myself, Day 2 and I'm still soda free and have got my water quota down. I've put water bottles everywhere and keep one on my desk. I think Friday starts the second week for me. I want to add another change. I'm going to start walking 15 min a day.

YES. You are looking good!!! Keep inspiring me (us). Did I remember to tell you how much I enjoyed yesterday's phrase "heinous snacks"? Well I sure did. If you can believe it, after ten thousand years of dieting, talk shows, magazine articles, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, etc., I've never truly understood the water drinking component to losing weight. At one time I thought it wa to flush ketones, and another time I thought it was to make the tummy feel full... Last night I watched "Biggest Loser" and heard for the first time (that I actually HEARD with my brain) that it bolsters the metabolism. I don't know how that works, but I mentioned it to you because in today's entry you say that you are on that task yourself. Did you know this before or is it just that you are striving to replace soda with the water? Hope I see you tomorrow.

Sounds like you are making great progress! I too just started getting all of my water in. It's quite a transition, but a good one in the end! 15 minutes a day sounds good. Keep us posted and try to stay warm =) I know that's hard because it's definetly freeeeezing where I am too...Brrrrrr! I don't know if you like hot tea, but I keep green tea bags at work and make that when I'm cold. It's comforting and relieves some of the stress if it's a really busy day. Hope oyu had a nice night and have a great day tomorrow!

Hey that is a good goal, walking 15 min a day. I recall when I weighed over 200 and started working toward goal, I walked 5 min each time I exercised and I really pushed it to do that!

Hello friends and Happy New Year, hope everyone had a great evening. I'm not big on the party scene but I managed to stay up til midnight to usher in the new year. Got to sleep in late, got my hot cup of java and reading up on diaries. Today is the big weigh in day. I will do that later, I'm not one to jump out of bed and onto the scale, I've got to ease into it. Today I'm "purging" my kitchen of junk food. I've got a buffet table of cruel goodies and my fridge is overflowing with heinous snacks that beckon to me in eve as they vie to sabotage my willpower. As I sip on my water I will toss them, dump them, drain them, fling them out the door as I free myself from shackles of temptation. Oh yeah, a little drama, but that's always fun.

Anyway, I will weigh in this afternoon.

I weighed myself at noon. I wasn't expecting anything, since I haven't done anything special but there is less of me to love and I love that! Yeah, I'm gearing up for the catwalk, lol. It's the sodas, definitely the sodas. I brought myself to eat some breakfast. Normally, I can't look at food until midday and then it's a free for all, so I'm trying to work in breakfast. I got some Uncle Sam's, it's a whole grain with flax seed and organic fat free milk. I do not want to go hungry, that is my worst nightmare. Somebody wrote about an oriental salad in their diary and that sounded really good, a citrusy dressing, a few crunchy noodles and some slivers of meat. I think I'll get a foil pack of salmon and try that on it. Then for dinner, I got some whole wheat linguine and I've got shrimp in the freezer, I've got vodka sauce, it's got some calories, but that's where I'll splurge a little. Well, I got the buffet wiped out, now...on to the fridge. Good luck everyone!

Hahaha I love the way you portray the junk food with such descriptive and fitting words! That made me laugh because I can just see the army of chocolates and sweets lined up ready for battle and you holding your glass of water and defeating them all! Sounds like you are off to a great start this year, and I hope the rest of your day is just as good! =)

haha, you're just like me with partying...i actually accidentally fell asleep a half hour before the ball drop! LOL! I was woken up by my neighbors partying outside with their "blowers" or whatever you call those noise makers! haha. i had been going out many days before last night and decided it didn't matter if i went out to celebrate new years...so i didn't. maybe next year!

that cereal is really healthy - i've seen it and was tempted to buy it. It even has some protien in it, i think. have a good day...and yes, don't forget about the fruits and veggies - especially the vegetables.

I don't know too much about Stevia--I've heard it's a little pricey.

Uncle Sam Cereal is about my favorite, but only at night. I can't eat cereal/milk for breakfast--my blood sugar spikes then plummets and then I'm hungry within about 1.5-2 hours. Except for steel cut oats/added fresh fruit--that stays with me a little longer.

Alright, where do I start, the good the bad or the ugly. The good is that I'm currently working on glass six of water. I was a little nervous about how I would do at work today, but it went pretty well. I brown bagged it and had turkey on toast (ok, ok, I had a sqeeze of miracle whip). But then I broke down and had that soda. I'm counting it in with my calories, but I'm eventually going to want to eat more and will need to put those cals to better use. So I'll count that as the bad. The ugly is what I've been reading about artifical sweetners and processed cane sugar. There is no way I will ever put another packet of artificial sweetner in my mouth again. I stopped off at the grocery store and picked up a box of Stiva packets. It's all natural, comes from a plant found in Paraguay, 0 calories, tastes great, I just had it with a cup of tea. I would highly recommend it. The next time I have a cookie or candy bar (only every now and then), I hope I don't have nightmares about the cane sugar. Which brings me to a book that I've been reading, some of it's garbage, but some is worth investigating and you have to get past a lot of foul language (I got the audio book. It's called "Skinny B****", well that gives you a clue, but ratings for it were all over the board and it intrigued me. I don't know how close everyone watches what comes up on the shelves in the grocery, but I've been noticing a big trend toward organic food. Which then generated some thought about how additives could possibly affect body activities. I'm not ready to become a vegan or vegetarian, I like a big juicy angus burger or steak on occasion, but I will certainly start paying closer attention to labels and start switching to more organic/natural items. I'm going to go dig up some dinner. Looking forward to my first weigh in tommorrow. Happy New Years to everyone and cheers to the new US!

Yeh Sugar is totally addictive and so not good for you...I am trying to cut back on it myself but its hard! I'm going to check out that book, I've heard others talk about it as well.

Well, it's all about moderation in eating. Too much of anything isn't good. I don't think that a person needs to be totally organic, vegetarian, or vegan to be healthy. But moderation is the key. I work on that a lot! I wish i knew all the foods to eat to make my body work its best! oh gosh, i wish!

I probably don't want to know what they had to say about splenda, huh? My mom has it here because both she and my brother have type2 diabetes. I started using it in my hot tea just because it's a measured serving. When I had a spoon in the sugar bowl, I tended to over sweeten. Can't give up my morning cuppa. Where do I find stivia? Thanks for the heads up.

The best thing is to opt for free range meat when possible. I live in Malaysia and my husband is from a tiny rural village where if the family feels like eating chicken they send the kiddies out back to run around and catch one (no fences, all open ground), and one of the men will slaughter it for dinner. Sounds a bit morbid but at least you know that the chicken was healthy and loved before we devoured it! And as for sugar, well do you really need to have a sweet drink? I used to have sugar in my tea or coffee, but I gave it up. You get used to the taste until you'll even feel grossed out at the thought of making the drink sweet. Switch a boring Earl Grey type tea for raspberry, mint, or cammomile tea. They're yummy by themselves.

I spent ten years living in the South, drinking sweet tea, adding cream and sugar to my coffee. It wasn't until my dentist yelled at me about the sugar in my coffee - producing a ton of mini cavities. I switched to black coffee, and now can't even think about putting sugar in it. Same with tea.

We did some research into food additives etc. when my son was small and having problems controlling himself. I was amazed at what I found out. We virtually eliminated artificial colors and flavors, and his behavior improved 1000%. It was really something! He even told me when he was in first grade that he felt better when he ate the right foods. There was one book I read about the baby food industry - THAT was scary! I think I'll have to check out the book you talked about.

On a good note - you did great with water! And if you only had one soda, that's much better than the 3 or 4....One day at a time!

You are one hysterically funny writer! Thank you for this wonderful picture that you painted with your words today. And, a BIG HUGE congrats on your weight loss! Such a wonderful way to begin the new year... I also have such a problem with eating in the morning. Yet, we need to eat then to get our metabolism going and to get our blood sugar aligned, right? I don't know if you like eggs, but I have been having a little success by keeping boiled eggs in the fridge. They are easy to grab, lots of protein and I often devil one or two and then spread it on toast. Just an idea. I wish everything wonderful to you in this brand new year. It's a special blessing being here with all these caring supportive Diarists, isn't it? :)

Alright, I can't count, last entry said I only had 61 pounds I thought it was 69. That's sooo much better. And my goal for this week is water, water, water, water, water, water. I said that six times, I'll drink at least six glasses. I believe every diet's mantra is water, so I can't go wrong there. I'm giving up the Satan Sodas. Ok, not completely, we're supposed to be honest here, right. But I was drinking 3 or 4 a day. I'm going to ignore them for as long as I can. Good luck everyone, I'm checking out your entries and I love hearing from you, it gives me motivation. Geeez, I gotta gear up and think of what I need to take to work for lunch this week.

If you are counting calories, do not forget to count the calories in your soda. It may motivate you to switch to diet soda or remove soda from your life and drink tea (if you need the caffeine). Not sure how many calories you are allowing yourself, but a 1-cab serving of regular coke/pepsi, contains 150 calories. While, in the grand scheme of things, 150 calories doesn't sound like a big deal..when you have two or three that is taking an entire meal of food that will fill you up, out of the picture.

I agree that some things are hard to quit, cold-turkey, and hope you can reduce your cola intake and that you don't forget to include those calories in your totals. And maybe, you will find it is easier to get rid of the regular soda's than you originally thought! Have a great day!

Good luck with your endeavours. Making small changes will help a lot if you stick to them. Giving up your fizzy drinks is a great example. Its harder if you try to make too many changes at once. Just do your best :o)

oh definitely give up the soda, I did. It's surprisingly hard but if u keep it out of your house and drink plenty of water, eventually, you won't miss it. it has no nutritional value and is evilly addictive and packed with calories!! good luck!

Thanks for filling me in about the RA.

Good luck with stopping the soda--it can be hard, but if you don't have a taste for diet drinks--I'd skip them altogether in favor of gatorade--diluted or some kind of fruity beverage or juice. Or green tea with a tsp of sugar or two. Try to completely stay away from anything with HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup) in any amount. (Sugar only, dextrose or cane syrup--that's just me--I don't tolerate aspartame in any amount unfortunately.) You may find after you've stayed away from the soda for a week or two and then take a taste--it's so darn sweet that you can't stand it!

I really like what you wrote below: "Sometimes life gets a hold of us and we don't have many choices, I say grab a hold of life (when it's not looking) and shake it hard!!"

OK, today is Day 1. I have 69 pounds to lose. God, what was I thinking when I was stuffing my face. But the past 18 months have been pretty stressful. But I've decided to make this the year (2008) of me. I was really looking for a good diet buddy, someone I could share questions, disappointments, encouragement with, but gee, I'll share with everybody. I've got RA, and about 2 years ago I was in a really bad flare up until the doc put me on new medication, I feel like a new woman. But for about a year, it was all I could do to get to work and get home, the rest of the time I was on the couch, well, it was downhill from there. Now it's time to get moving uphill. I'll catch you all later and will be checking your blogs. Remember success is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration, so get out there and sweat and get inspired!!!!!

I hope you'll get the support you need--just knowing someone's reading you and paying attention to your struggle can sometimes make a difference.

Just wondering if/how much the RA limits your activity? At this age--I'm also 48--it's tougher to lose no matter what, but it can be done. Exercise certainly makes it easier to keep it off. You sound determined.

I have kept my weight down to a certain point with several ups/downs over time. I still have the weight I want to be, but I'm not there yet.

I hope you'll find the support you need--glad you're here!

Hey, it's great to hear from you. When I first found out I had RA (5 years ago) the med profile I was given quit working in about 2006 through part of 2007, I couldn't hardly brush my hair it would hurt so bad. The only thing I felt like doing was to lay on the couch and eat a bag of chips. Before that I was pretty active, I love doing yard work, etc. Then I was put on Enbrel. After about 3 months of being on that, I felt like a new woman only with the extra weight gain and loss of muscle. The only limitation I feel now is in my knees and I hope weight loss and exercise will improve that. It sounds like you're doing great, you're keeping it in check. Sometimes life gets a hold of us and we don't have many choices, I say grab a hold of life (when it's not looking) and shake it hard!!

Welcome! Gosh, you sound so determined. Hang onto that! I will be anxious to read of your days and goals and wish you every single type of success. I am new also... I am onboard for the second time. Years ago I was a member and was able to lose so much weight with the kindness and inspiration of diarists here. In a way it is nothing short of miraculous when you think about how the care of near strangers can make such a difference. As an overweight woman I feel kind of "invisible" as I walk around the world.... trying to wear clothes that aren't really "me", but those that look the least form-fitting. Trying really not to be "noticed". Here is a place where we can be ourselves and give and ask for acceptance and encouragement. I wish you every success.
