Well done biscotti! I think you are wise to go carefully with your dodgy bits. Funny how we seem to be gaining joints etc. that don't work properly. I couldn't be age could it?

V on 07/16/2011:
NICE!!! You are going full force with this :) Great routine Biscotti!!

h82bfat on 07/16/2011:
Awesome routine, especially with 13lb wghts! Takes dedication to do that! I keep thinking about doing it (again).... Hope u have a great weekend!

geevee on 07/16/2011:
What concerned me about the vaccine is that it contains a live virus. Somewhere in the back of my mind I recall hearing that live viruses can cause the disease, not just the mild reaction that gives you protection against the disease. Am I thinking about one of the polio vaccines?

The person at Walgreen's knew zilch and couldn't tell me if a prescription was required to get the vaccine. Walgreen's doesn't carry it.

With all the blood work my Dr. does, and with the platelet level low the last time, I want to be sure that I'll be able to take the vaccine without negative effect. The methotrexate I take for arthritis is some strong drug! The Dr. lowered the dose after the platelet episode. This drug affects the immune system so I want to be sure it's okay and have my Dr. in town when I take it.

Do you know if the severity of chicken pox has anything to do with who eventually gets shingles? Just wondering.

hollybelle on 07/16/2011:
Thanks for the tips on the shoulder pain. I think I got this for a combo of reasons that just stacked up against me. Riding bike with wrong kind of handle bar for distances I'm riding, turbo jam with hand weights the whole time two days in a row, sitting in a cool windy outside ampitheatre last night for a play and no chiropractor for about 3-4 months.

greengirl on 07/16/2011:
Awesome routine Biscotti !!

For my activity: Walk 15 min; Circ Aer Wkt using Airdyne (8 min)

My workout started out a bit sluggishly yesterday, I completed it ALL and felt great at the end--what a relief! Everything's easier even with this just being the 3rd in a row as scheduled. I've added reps, my squats were deeper and I'm just about ready to raise my dumbbell to the next higher wt. I'm not sore, which to me is a plus--soreness is a demotivator personally--must be an age thing;-) I figure if I live long enough the aches and pains will come as they will--haha!

Not to dwell on it, but I wanted to respond to some of the shingles comments: I'm doing well. I'm about 4 weeks past the very first symptoms and I can't emphasize  how important it is to get the antiviral prescription once you get the rash. That's what I think must have made it easier for me. (My rash showed up 4 weeks ago this Saturday.)

Once I get the word that my cornea is completely healed (and I can go back to my contact lenses) I'm going to declare myself 99%--simply because I expect from everything I've learned that the post-herpetic pain (which so far is the itching for me) can linger for weeks/months. I WILL be getting the vaccine. Period. I just have to find out when is the best time since I'm still recovering and don't want to overtax my body unneccessarily.

~Moody~ on 07/12/2011:
So glad to hear that you're doing well regarding the shingles..Please continue to keep us posted~

Good for you for getting 3 workouts done in a row~You should be proud of yourself~Feels great huh!

Umpqua on 07/12/2011:
You are doing SO well, I was just telling my hubby what a strong person you are. I'm sure the antiviral played a major role, but I also think living a healthy and active lifestyle makes illness recovery that much quicker and easier.

moogy on 07/12/2011:
I haven't heard of a vaccine here, but then again, I had never known anyone to have them until three of us at church got them sequentially. I am fortunate in that I have a really good immune system and I had a fairly mild dose. Good job with the exercise woman, keep up the good work:) I am with you on the pain = stop doing it system!:)

V on 07/12/2011:
Whew!! I am so relieved that your vision is not affected..On re of your info on caffeine, well I would love to read about it when you get the chance...My Celsius intake has decreased tremendously as well due to the "afterburn" It is no joke and sometimes even though I am in bed, my heart is pupming like i just completed a HIIT or Fire class...I really try hard not to take any of those classes in the evening, but some of them has you feeling all amped up even the next day....

Maria7 on 07/12/2011:
Glad you're doing well(er). Thanks for your comment. Good on your workout. :-D Hope you are having a good evening.

Hi!...Well, I'm suprised I even remembered my password!!!! Thanks for the checking in... I have been super busy and getting super fat in the process... I will be posting here someday soon... I have been spending much time away from home.. In April, my dad had an aortic anreuysm the size of a grapefruit repaired (3 stints) and my mom has been 24/7 care for him the last 10 months.... So, I am in self-neglect of weighty issues mode ;o( Tried on some new clothing today and got so very disguisted... I need a HUGE kick in my HUGE butte... Not back to the 237,but may as well be... Take care and see you soon.. I've got a good start on healthy food shopping this afternoon...

geevee on 07/15/2011:
Thanks for the info on herpes simplex. I will check out that link.

BTW, in the science section of the NYT on Tues. 7/12, there was a long and fact filled article about shingles and the vaccine. I was surprised at how many people get it, esp. as you get older. My doctor is on vacation right now, but when he's back and I see him in August, I'm going to ask him for it. I asked at Walgreen's yesterday but they don't have it. I guess they don't have a freezer. I do't care how much the charge for it is. To prevent such pain, discomfort and potential loss of vision, no price is too high for me. I am SO GLAD you told us about the vaccine!

Will skip my weigh-in tomorrow assuming I get my wt trng done today as scheduled.

My recovery continues to go well. I woke up a couple of times the last two nights with my shingles rash itching--it's on my scalp and forehead in case you haven't read my last few entries. My eye is doing better every day and today it is NOTICEABLY less painful. I have another follow-up with the eye dr this week after having used a combo eyedrop prescription.

I'm going to weigh in BEFORE the surgery and then in September. I don't want to obsess over this subject.

KathyBlue on 07/11/2011:
btw, do you think this "raw diet" can be maintained over years? I saw blogs from all over the world, and people are very seriously into this. There are families based on this type of eating, which scares me a bit... I mean, it has its logic because mankind started somewhere and developped for worse in the meantime (fast food, highly processed stuff), but then again...

Article: Binge Eating May Be a High All Its Own

I got my wt trng done. I did exceedingly well with it after a break from doing ANY wt trng for 93 days--that's just crazy. I'm sure it's the most gigantic break ever (since I started doing some form of this wkt YEARS ago). I'd have to check my little notie-notebooks to see if it's the longest for sure.

A sample of 6 of the 15 different wt trng exercises using 10.5# dumbbells:
Mountain Climbers: 12 reps
Squats: 15 reps--could only get about 85% down on the move, but that will improve
Upright Rows, Biceps Curls (each), Triceps Kickbacks (each): 10 reps--no elbow pain
Pushups: Mil::10, Sissy::16 reps x 2
Abs: Bic Crch::35, Leg Lifts::15, Bic Crch::35 (x 2 sets of all three)
Alt Lunges (each): 15 reps

I did the whole workout (all 15) with the intention of not overdoing it to minimize soreness. Apparently my strategy worked--no soreness except for my abs:-)

I weighed in Saturday morning and I'm down a half-pound--checked my body fat too, no change there--didn't expect it. I'm going to TRY to take advantage of my quicker-than-I-thought, but still-too-slow recovery from the shingles to get my wt trng in. And I'd like to also get back to my early NordicTrack wkt. Overall I feel about 95% recovered from the shingles.

Strictly Shingles:

  1. I had quite the bout of hardcore fatigue last Tuesday. I could barely keep my eyes open--thankfully it looks like it was a one-day thing.
  2. I finished the antiviral (for the shingles) last Monday. I have to think it worked it's wonder, and that I started it quickly enough.
  3. I feel like I've dodged a small bullet so far, although I still have a fair bit of scalp pain from time to time (anything from feeling like a little pop from some phantom hand--haha--to a spasm-like discomfort--confined to a small portion of my head).
  4. My eye is irritated and ever so slightly swollen still--but getting better every day, and my lymph nodes are essentially back to normal. No swelling there like there was a little over a week ago.
  5. I expect to have the occasional pain for some time--it's not really awful enough for medication. The vitamin E seems to dull the "near the eye" pain. I feel very lucky, though I still have to follow up with the eye dr.

That's about it for the update. I didn't know what to expect at this point and it's a mixed bag. I appreciate all of your good thoughts, wishes and sentiments more than you know:-)

Maria7 on 07/05/2011:
I am so sorry to read that you have had/are having shingles. I've had friends that suffered with it and it sounded very uncomfortable, the symptoms they described, as does yours. I will pray for you to soon be over it completely. Also, thanks for your understanding comments regarding the nursing home and visitations. Sometimes it helps just to know that someone gets where you are coming from...such a comfort. You are a blessing. Hoping you have a good evening and are feeling better. :-)

Maria7 on 07/05/2011:
PS...congrats on your new lower number...it ALLLLLL counts! :-D

KathyBlue on 07/06/2011:
I also bought supplements to fight the cramps... actually it does work. I don't have cramps nowadays, and a brutal aquafitness class test proved it, too (with lots of jumps and legwork). The coffee thing, yeah, you're right, I'll have to let it go. I have lots of coffee substitute stuffs, cereal drinks, and it wouldn't be a problem taking them instead because I am not addicted to coffee. I like the flavor, (only with milk!) and it's a low-cal treat for me. Cereal drinks do have more calories than coffee though.. but I can substitute coffee with a yogurt or decaf. I bought a little bottle of vanille aroma, I will put that in milk and try if I can substitute the coffee like that. And what about decaf??? I have lots of decaf options here. I have coffee beans at home, decaffed...

I had never heard about the half life of caffeine. It sure makes sense. My insom nia is no where near as bad as it was. Now when I wake up for a bathroom run, I can usually go back to sleep pretty soon. Also, getting to sleep in the first place is a lot easier.

The next time I have a herpes attack and my nostrils are filled with scabs and itching, I won't complain.I should be grateful that for the most part, the blisters can't be seen, tho sometimes they are. I HATE those days!

I just can't imagine the misery you've been through. And despite it all, you've gotten in so much walking! WOW! You are some SuperWoman!

I am glad that you are better and Holy SHHHH I didn't realize that shingles/side effects lasted that long :( I have been waiting to tell you and Maria that I have not had Starbucks in 3 months now...This was not something i was trying to do but after one of my HIIT classes, I had some and i seriously thought I was having a heart attack..After that I did not have any after my workouts so I guess my caffeine addicton was replaced with my super endorphine cardio ;) LOL I hope you continue to post, this site is just not the same without you for me :)

Tues: Walk 15 min
Wed: Walk 10 min
Thur: Walk 10 min

No weigh-in Tuesday.

So today is Day 22 of no coffee with milk first thing in the morning for me--that's my big change. I guess I have to explain: No coffee/No milk so I can get closer to the strictly plant-based McDougall/Esselstyn way of eating. I don't like black coffee (tried all the nut milks--not for me--I will try to make my own almond milk one of these days). I have had coffee drinks and a regular coffee with H&H during this time. Most of the coffee drinks were regular because I forgot to order decaf. Also I have not had much chocolate--was hard at first, but it has gotten easier.

The upshot of this change is that I have drastically cut my caffeine intake overall and it has had a drastic effect for the better on my sleep. I haven't slept less than 5 hours any night so far--I generally get a solid 6-8 hrs. And I don't wake up 3 or 4 hours after I went to bed. Sure I've had a couple of those--but the sleep disruptions are DRASTICALLY reduced. The bottom line is that I am not a slave to morning coffee anymore. I've replaced it with a cup of black tea with lemon--50 mg of caffeine as opposed to 150-200 with regular coffee.

What follows is complaining/whining/what have you. I generally don't complain about personal stuff on here, But . . . I have fu*king SHINGLES for crying out loud. It sucks the rag as much as you can imagine. From time to time my head feels like it's sunburned INSIDE. If you've ever had a really bad sunburn on your scalp--that's how it has felt from time to time. All my lymph nodes on one side from my clavicle up became tender just about a week ago and then on Saturday I got the rash--it's on my scalp and forehead and my eye is swollen nearly shut.

A couple days before that I noticed bumps on one half of my scalp. They were very tender like I had hit my head. (I had in fact hit my head and had a bump a couple days before that.) Thos bumps are now very tender sores some with scabs--I'm not paying that much attention to them. I guess it's a small consolation that it's not on a body part where I have to wear clothing.

I'm on an antiviral as of Monday. I saw the eye dr on Wednesday to make sure it wasn't affecting my cornea. At night my nose gets stuffed up and I feel either chills or feverish (for the last 6 nights). I discovered from a couple of my "Natural Healing" books that vitamin E might help for healing, etc. (There was an actual study from the 70s mentioned where a certain percentage of the participants benefited from E). So I tried it not thinking it would be a big deal. I took an E plus a C and it relieved the pain in my eye very quickly. The eye pain had started with a vengeance on Wednesday night. Ibuprofen wasn't helping. (I had a narcotic prescription that I didn't fill--the same medication didn't do anything for me when I had taken it previously for tooth pain after a wisdom tooth extraction.) So the vitamin E was a pleasant finding:-)

There is a vaccine for shingles--it's about $220 at Walgreen's (here in the US). You don't need a dr's order for it. I will be getting it once I get this session of misery far behind me--getting shingles doesn't impart immunity--you can get it again and again, though I'm not sure if it's that common to get it again and again ad infinitum. The vaccine is recommended for those over 60, and insurance may not cover it, but there may be a new recommendation for 50 and older. If you've had chickenpox at any time, you're susceptible to shingles. The big complication that gets worse with aging is post-herpetic neuralgia (nerve pain).

I don't know if cutting out coffee has had anything to do with this. I doubt it. Even if it has there's no going back on my change at least for the time being. Some thought and some research went into my decision to cut the a.m. coffee with milk. So maybe I'll make an entry just about that in case there's any interest.

I've been laying low at least hoping the swelling in my eye will go away. I don't know how long it will be. It's murder on many things. I've never had Poison Ivy/Oak or any kind of eye infection, but that's the upshot of this cosmetically speaking--a swollen eye and a rash on half of my forehead. Otherwise, it's a nerve infection essentially.

Chickenpox sits dormant on nerves, and shingles is the "awakening" of the virus years after having chickenpox. I'm about halfway through the dose of antiviral--it's crucial to get it within a certain period of time. I don't know if it's doing me any good. I hope so!

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh I totally hear you on the coffee w/ milk subject... OMG, how many times I tried to let that go! I had a few days, months, etc. without it, but then... it's impossible to live in Portugal without drinking coffee. It's somewhat part of the culture, people gather and drink coffee, wine, beer, etc. but coffee is the most important. People start w/ coffee at the workplace, discuss life's matters and only then start to work.. then, lunchtime goes an other coffee before getting back to work... then there's an other one around 5 PM (tea for the English, coffee for Latins)... Well, that health problem sounds serious... and the price of the vaccine also!!! Bahhh... it's so expensive to keep ourselves alive and well. If we want some quality life, we have to pay the price - LITERALLY... Disgusting! And then you have those ppl living in the amazonians, deserts, etc., enjoying life in its pure simplicity, no diets, fighting w/ exercising, etc... LOL... life is so colorful and painful sometimes.

Sorry to hear about the shingles Biscotti !! A colleague of mine was on sick leave with them recently. He had them for a few days before he went to the docs and had them diagnosed then he was absent from work for three weeks or so, but to be honest he came back to work still feeling poorly. I hope yours don't hang about for long. Good news about the sleeping though. Well done on curbing your caffeine intake :-) Hope you are feeling better soon !

hollybelle on 06/24/2011:
I'm so sorry to hear this - I know shingles are very painful! You have good medicines, though. Hope they help and you dont have this problem again! Good work on everything you have been doing. I'm very impressed that you walked every single day! And some days did even more - even with the shingles!

V on 06/24/2011:
Hey girl!! Welcome back!! Sorry about the flippin shingles :( I hope this will resolve soon...Have a good one!!

Umpqua on 06/25/2011:
I'm so sorry to hear about the shingles, I've heard about how painful and uncomfortable it is. I hope the medicine works for you soon. Congrats on ditching the coffee, I don't think I can attempt that until the boys are much older!

mcwoo40 on 06/25/2011:
Jeeze that's nasty, supposed to be very painful too, hope the meds kick in soon :)I am a big tea drinker, and i know i should drink more water.Feel better soon, keep in touch :)

geevee on 06/25/2011:
OMG! You poor dear. I never heard of shingles on the scalp and forehead. What misery you're going through. I am SO sorry. I'm glad you told us about the vaccine. That sounds like something I need to do since I do suffer from a poor cousin of shingles, herpes simplex. They're both related to chicken pox. Even tho herpes attacks are mild, sometimes I get feverish from them. The physical problems are so uncomfortable, yet compared to what you're going thru, are next to nothing.

I, too, recently cut down on coffee, from two to one cup and found it easy to do. I don't want to rush it, but in a few weeks, I'll cut back to half a cup and see how that goes.

My main reason for doing this was sleep. Even tho I don't drink it during the day, only first thing in the morning, I thought maybe it was too much for my system and that it might be affecting my sleep.

I'm still having sleep problems, but I do note a slight difference. Not so many nights of insomnia until 5am, and getting somewhat more sleep per night. Maybe caffeine is part of my problem.

How you can get in so much walking and exercise is remarkable! Esp. w/shignles. Good going!

Forgot to thank you for your note a few weeks ago..

liza36 on 06/27/2011:
I'm so sorry to hear about the shingles. That's terrible! I hope it resolves itself soon, and you feel better.

Good for you for cutting out coffee. That can be difficult. Do you think at some point you'll cut out the tea? My only caffeine consumption was diet coke, and I quit that cold turkey about 6 weeks ago. So far so good, and no negative side affects like headaches, etc. For you, it's wonderful that sleep has improved. I haven't noticed that effect on me, but I also was not drinking tons that might affect sleep. Any way, good job!

selina on 06/27/2011:
I'm so sorry to hear about the shingles, I've heard from other sources how painful it is... I feel for you and I hope your medical attention to it will solve the problem. Take care.... I also drink coffee black nowadays - I can't believe it that I can do that, after so many decades of half-half. I started several months ago, and I don't miss it anymore. Take care....

(A Few Gradual Changes)
Weight: 159.0

Body Fat: 33.8%::3.8; 34.0%::4.20; 35.5%::6.7

There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. --Edith Wharton

For my activity lately:
Sat: Walk 25 min
Sun: Walk 35 min; Bike Ride 33 min/5.4 mi
Mon: Walk 35 min
Tues: Walk 45 min; Bike Ride 21 min/3.2 mi

I'm still rolling on with one particular change. Not going to reveal it until I'm completely dug in. My focus is good, but I need time to see just how committed I am. It's going better than I ever thought it might. (I realize that means little to nothing to anyone reading this.)

For my weigh-in yesterday, I'm not at 156.5#, but I changed it on here since I seem to have resolved my scale fiasco. I ended up getting a replacement for the replacement scale--so now I have two !!!FREE!!! scales.

My BF% above was taken with my handheld Omron gadget. I didn't care for the scale with the BF thingy and it wasn't the proper replacement, so they sent me another one. Very generous of them. At any rate, I'd love to see how I'll feel with a BF of 30% and then I'll shoot for 25%.

My BMI is still in the overweight category, 140.5# would put it in the normal category. Seems easy, but I've been here for all these years--and it's not easy. However, all the time I've been on here has served me well to keep me from gaining too much from my lowest weight--I know that for certain.

Still using my CPAP religiously and still grateful I found out I have sleep apnea.

Gotta go!

I definitely am cured, it was a mental disorder, not eating! I am a Leo, therefore a real drama queen as my man says! ;-) Your comment made me sober at once, and helped me getting out from this emotional ditch ... coz it's all phsicological, an imagination! I've been eating correctly for 3 days now! Getting back to normal, one day at a time! :-) xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo lotsa love!
