Day 15: Calorie goal no--water goal no!

I had one miserable day yesterday. I COULD NOT GET RELIEF as my back spasms were worse (the worst since the first day they returned a few weeks ago) and, did I tell you, "I couldn't get any relief!" I didn't sleep much the night before, so late in the afternoon and early in the evening I stole a total of about 2 hours.

The back, etc is better today. I tried an OTC sleep prep--generic Unisom--doxylamine succinate--I took half of one and it did kind of calm things down for me overnight. I still didn't sleep as much as I wanted, but woke up refreshed. I didn't notice any residual "hangover" effect. If I get to bed at a decent time tonight I may take a whole one. I read a couple of reviews about it--I'm not a pill taker--and they were mostly what I experienced.

I'll take my chances with getting some exercise today while my back spasms seem to be in a lull. Not that I'm expecting to have another really bad day tomorrow, but you never know. I may only be able to expect one to two good days and one bad day for the next few weeks. I really think alot of it is an accumulation of stress and things I've left undone as much as just a physical response.

Also, akaSandra mentioned her urine being bright yellow and thinking it's detoxing or something--but she also mentioned she had taken a vitamin B complex. To whom it may concern: Vitamin B12 will cause your urine to become bright yellow temporarily. It may give a warm fuzzy feeling to do all this detoxing and thinking you have worms that have to be killed and stuff. But I'm of the opinion that if you have parasites you'll know it. I wouldn't have a colonic if you paid me. I have my morning "saving grace" EVERY MORNING. And if I don't, I'm in trouble. If you've traveled to a country where intestinal parasites are a problem, then by all means get a check-up, but most of this stuff is simply meant to separate you from your $$$ in my not so humble opinion;-)

There's an interesting take on this alternative med/possible quackery/outright quackery on quackwatch.com if you're interested. It's not completely definitive or the FDA or anything, but it does in some cases cite legitimate scientific journal articles. It is another perspective and is informative to me. My take: if you're eating enough fiber--fresh fruit/veg and getting plenty of exercise--at least 30 min aerobic exercise daily--drinking plenty of water--and getting a good night's sleep, these gimmicks are only going to make the charlatans a little richer.

To be fair, I certainly can understand why people turn away from traditional western medicine and embrace alternatives--no matter how wacky it may sound to others. There are some things that may make you feel better simply because of a placebo effect or because it gets your mind off of what's really bothering you. Or you feel better because of "fill in the blank." I can understand. But (a big but), most of it is completely unfounded scientifically. (There are still people who believe the earth is flat for crying out loud!) Alot of alternative medicine is completely unregulated, just as vitamins and herbs don't have to be tested for efficacy by the FDA, as do prescription drugs. In most states (if not all) the local nail salon has to be licensed--a colonic service may not even be required to be inspected AT ALL!

I found this website where a guy did three different enemas at home--Coffee, Red Bull and Schlitz beer. It was hilarious! It was a little like the site from a few years ago where a guy gets his two friends (a woman and a man) to gain 30 pounds in 30 days--if I remember correctly. Seems like they then proceed to lose it in the next phase. In another "experiment" he also made himself acquire a nasty case of athlete's foot--not so funny towards the end. He seemed to have overdone it a little--he gets a horrible infection. He truly was scared!

I'm so behind in housework, so I'll probably do a little "timer time" to get me motivated there. Setting it to 20 min and then just going for it usually works to get me started.

Plan for today: NTrack, Bike Ride, Walk

Hope you get some good exercise today!

"saving grace"?? - LOL! That sounds so much better than Daily Donkey Dump. I'm with you, if it doesn't happen in the morning, there will be problems for the next couple of days.

I'm sorry to hear about your back. That sounds just awful. I hope you get some rest. Lack of sleep can cause a temporary weight gain (a couple of pounds, just fluid, unless prolonged).

Horn_Of_Plenty on 09/20/2007:
haha. interesting, well written entry. you really back up your opinion with good points!

its true, there are a lot of people out there that want our money. food and medicine...so costly.

Congratulations to your new plan to and getting to 164. Yes, like you, I came back from a much higher weight and thought that 164 was SMALL...but once we know what it is to be smaller, our attitudes sometimes change, I guess. My Hubby PREFERRS me to be a little larger than I preferr!

For my activity: NordicTrack 22 min/2.4 mi; Walk 10 min

Day 13: Calorie goal yes--water goal yes!

I'm down a pound on my weigh-in and on measurements up 5/8ths inch--typical. Assuming I continue on an even keel, I'm going to start weighing in on Saturdays as well.

Really I was lucky to get the little activity I did get done yesterday, so same plan as yesterday--I don't know what I'll get done. My back is a ton better today!

I remember being at 164 the first time around after a high weight of 189--I felt downright skinny--haha! I don't feel that bad about myself right now--I can wear 12s consistently and some 10s. And I obviously just feel better:-) Now that I'm here again for the 5th or 6th or whatever'th time, I don't want to be here again. I'd like to lose 1-2 pounds/week, stay healthy and pain-free and not have to see 164 again ever.

It's a slow process for me, but I think I've resigned myself to it!

Plan for today: Circuit Workout; Bike Ride; Walk

Hope you get some good exercise today!

Hey, good job on the exercise and the pound lost!! And I'm glad your back is doing better. So's mine! So I will attempt exercise tomorrow. It's funny, I weighed 160.4 on Monday but I could never squeeze into a size 10 right now. Our bodies are so different, I guess. In fact, my 14's are still tight. Maybe they shrunk, haha! Keep up the good work!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 09/19/2007:
yes, too much time = binging. also, i've realized i binge when i'm LONELY. I was talking to a guy last night online..he used to live by me in NY, but now in another state. I have found that talking to him actually has recently helped me deal with eating. I don't talk to him about it at all. however, by having a good friendship and someone to count on to talk to...i'm less lonely. and i realized that is sometimes why i go to food! if only he lived here! lol.

For my activity lately:
Thurs: Circ Aer Wkt using NordicTrack (23 min/2.3 mi); Walk 10 min
Fri: Nothing
Sat: Weedeat abt 1 hr; Mow 2.5 hrs; Cleanup 30 min
Sun: Nothing

Day 9: Calorie goal no (1933)--water goal yes!
Day 10: Calorie goal no (1844)--water goal yes!
Day 11: Calorie goal no (2814)--water goal no (56 oz)!
Day 12: Calorie goal yes--water goal no!

Tentative plan for the circuit today, because I had a flare-up with my back. It was before the yardwork. It seemed to have started as soreness from the circuit, because I can mostly stand up straight. It didn't bother me while I was weedeating/mowing, etc. At any rate it's 10 times better than it was at its worst a couple weeks ago. So I should at least do the upper body portion--we'll see!

It's much better today than Sunday. I just can't stop doing something for 4 or more days--inactivity is worse than anything! And I figure that if I can do a bigass bunch of yardwork, I should be able to do anything else. So I'm going to go full speed ahead, and if I have some major consequence as a result, I'll just deal with it. I'm remembering back to the original situation about 15 years ago and my first reaction is to sit around and baby it. That's not what I did then (after finding out what it was) and I'm not going to do so now. Pain will be my guide!

Despite the calories consumed, I have an average deficit of over 500 calories for the last 6 days!

Plan for today: Circuit Workout; Bike Ride; Walk

Hope you get some good exercise today!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 09/17/2007:
i agree with donkey...and you're calories weren't so bad, despite not meeting the goal.

i certainly find days with less of a plan to be difficult eating wise. lol, its like free time = free reign over food all day. maybe that's why sunday was difficult? i think i may look for a low stress, weekend part time job. i'm going to see about opportunities at the hospital by me.

Soon2BThin on 09/17/2007:
Hey, I'm right there with you on the back pain. The doc said all I can do for it is physical therapy. At that time it seemed better but today it's hurting pretty bad on the left side, lower part. Just twinges. I may have to see her again soon. And I can't do the upper body work because of my left shoulder, tendonitis. I'm a mess, haha! Oh, to be 10 years younger again! I did do half an hour of treading water in the pool yesterday, maybe that's why my back hurts, although it didn't hurt at the time. Oh, well, we do what we can do, right? Good luck!

greengirl on 09/18/2007:

For my activity: Nothing

Day 7: Calorie goal yes--water goal no! Actually on my measurements I was DOWN 1/8th inch--big woop--but it's DOWN instead of UP!

I needed to do no activity yesterday. My back is surprisingly not an issue--there's a bit of deep soreness when I do a certain stretch--but I couldn't do that stretch even a week ago. I'm surprised at how quickly I was able to get better!

I'm dusting off an old running schedule--don't know how it will go. All I know is I'll just take it one step at a time, no rushing for me.

Plan for today: NTrack; Jog/Walk

For my activity: Circ Aer Wkt using Airdyne (25 min/5.5 mi); Walk 10 min

Day 6: I made the calorie goal--not the water goal. I'm up two pounds on my weigh-in. I'm up overall from my last measurements, by 1/8th inch. However, I'm down or unchanged on all measurements except two--bust & abdomen, so once again it's a mixed bag.

I don't mind taking back the two pounds this week because I've had a pretty good week (one day left) regarding food. And an excellent week re: exercise. I've done all I expected to and, since I was still recovering from the back trouble, I'd call it a rousingly successful exercise week:-)

I just need to get on the stick for more than a day or a week, possibly tie a couple of weeks together and then see where I am.

Plan for today: Walk

I do apologize if I disagree with your assessment of ad-vitam's diet. Perhaps I have missed something, because nowhere did I see that it was super low in calories.

I think if someone is indulging in bad habits and then quickly jumps into a healthy lifestyle that they will lose a lot of weight quickly. Don't you think so? Or, is this not applicable to that situation? This is why I think I must have missed something there.

Please do not refrain from commenting on my diary at least. I do value your frank opinions and encouragement.

I left off the leg work except for the calf raises and deadlifts, the latter of which is good for my lower back. Speaking of, it's still doing okay--holding it's own haha!
