Weight: 158.5

Start: 189 (June 2001)
Low: 150 (Nov 2006)
Current BMI=27.2 My Realistic BMI Goal=22.8 (133)

For my activity:
Fri-Sat-Sun-Mon-Tues: Nothing

I'm up a half-pound on my Tuesday weigh-in. No measurements this week.

Despite having two >3000-cal days (the first in quite awhile--the 14th and 22nd) and the 15th day of no real exercise (for no good reason except sheer laziness), my big toe is still in the water:-)

I was looking for something else and ran across an article about The Biggest Loser the other day. Things I didn't know:
1) 250,000 people sent in videos to be considered for this latest show
2) the women eat from 1100-1500 cal/day
3) the contestants generally work out for 5 hrs/day
4) the producers admit that most of what happens in the course of a day is truly like watching paint dry
5) there's no magically mysterious thing happening--just intense isolated hard work with no frustrations of family life or work
6) the only reason it's still on is because people keep buying all the stuff it generates and watching it of course--it's now a multimillion $ venture
7) the contestants are closely monitored by a physician even after they go home (though it was pointed out that you or I would be hard pressed to find a dr who would recommend losing at the rate these people lose--one guy lost 30 pounds the first week in one season apparently).

I know alot of people like the show--I like Celebrity Fit Club for pretty much the same reasons, I imagine. I'd be interested, however, to know how many of the former BL contestants have had their gall bladders removed shortly after the show and how many of them have kept their weight down and are still eating right and exercising. (Rapid weight loss is a huge risk for gallstone formation.)

And now here's this "I'm gonna make you thin" guy. Well I looked him up and read a couple articles and he's essentially a hypnotist--a very rich one! He is a proponent of something called neuro-linguistic programming, which is quite controversial and of questionable benefit. Used to do comedy hypnosis stuff. He apparently helped Ellen Degeneres quit smoking recently.

Hell, I'd actually watch her show just to see her and all her smoking guests smoke--hell yeah I'd watch that! (There's just not enough smoking going on on TV these days--you'd think it was illegal or something;-)

Barack Obama could come back on and smoke instead of dance--so much for all the talk (at the time) that dancing on her show was going to hurt his political chances. Laura Bush and her daughters could come on and smoke. Rachael Ray could come on and chain smoke while making a 30-min meal--yummo! Paula Deen could eat butter AND smoke! (Those are all reported smokers--including at least one of the Bush daughters--don't know about the other one.) Ellen could teach others to smoke--like Oprah for instance. Hahahaha!

Anyway, I watched about 5 min of "I'm gonna make you thin" the other night where the guy (I liked his glasses:-) had the audience tapping body parts and humming. (It was just soooo condescending!) Yeah, DrPhil was going to get us all skinny and mentally healthy and DrOz was going to get us all skinny. And DrAtkins. (Seems that of the commercial diets, at least here on DDs at the moment, South Beach seems to be the one that sticks with people. Maybe I should try it:-)

The show reminded me of a 2-day corporate training course from a few years back. It was about training your memory. And I still have the tapes from it. The instructor was a somewhat charismatic guy who had us all do alot of stuff along with him. I used a couple of the techniques for a week or so, but I think it's one of those things you very much have to practice every day.

So I suppose this guy's tapping foolishness would work if you stayed with it. Maybe it's a good thing, I don't know. It reminds me of the behavior modification trend of the 1970s where you put a rubber band on your wrist and every time you had the urge to do whatever--smoke, pick your nose, pull your eyebrows out, eat a gallon of ice cream--whatever--you pull back the rubber band, let go and WHAP! The pain would remind you, "Don't do that, dammit!"

Anyway, I don't think I'd pad his bank account any more than it already is by purchasing his books. Go read the Wikipedia article--it's neutral. Where's the truth in advertising--tell us what's behind the curtain (like in The Wizard of Oz). If Paul McKenna is on something called "The Learning Channel--TLC," then tell all--don't make it look like an infomercial. That's what it looked like for those 5 min.

With all due respect for all of you from the UK--he's already done all this there, I understand. Isn't there still as big an obesity/overweight problem as there is here. Did he have ANY palpable impact on the problem in your country? (I wonder if you see people tapping themselves and humming in public--haha!)

But ya' know it's really all about money--he seemed so bored with the humming haha! I'm sure he'll soon be on Oprah's bandwagon and she'll be telling her viewers how she finally got down to a size 6 (or 4 or 2 or maybe even 0) with the help of this guy and he'll sell 3 trillion dollars worth of books. You know she must see herself in those pictures from yesteryear where she carts in a wheelbarrow of fat and wants that Oprah back! (And next year there'll be a DrPaul show since he has a PhD in something or other.)

I too want my a** to look like it did in 7th grade. (I have no idea how much I weighed.) I have a full-length picture from then, and I looked average for that time, to the best of my knowledge. I never thought about my weight or tried to wear any size other than the one I wore. It just wasn't an issue. My weight really wasn't an issue for me for decades. Judging from my current behavior, regaining my 7th grade bottom isn't going to happen in this lifetime. Right now I'd just like to keep it from looking like it did in pics of when I weighed in the 180s. At least I'm no longer in denial like I was then. (Well I'm in denial, but not about that--haha!) I guess I'm very lucky as well.

At the end of the day I can only change myself and from the 5 min of that show I saw, I don't think tapping body parts and humming when I actually feel like eating is going to do it for me. I need to move forward, but I still thank pinkus/pinkuspettuty (a diarist here) for mentioning the book Overcoming Overeating all those years ago. Something in it stuck for me and despite my calorie intake lately, I don't overeat or even come close to doing what others classify as "binge eating." I am powerless around certain foods still, and I avoid them for the most part. The jury is out as to whether that will change--when I go overboard with cookies, cake, etc it's more a function of the food being around rather than some sort of emotional trigger.

I do have alot of room for improvement and I do feel like I'm strong enough physically and mentally to progress and sustain from here. I always feel like I will prevail in this! For me I think it takes perseverance and hard work and maintaining a realistic attitude and goals. As an aside, one of the titles written by the "I can make you thin" guy is Change Your Life In Seven Days. Really!

I'm appalled that this "I'm gonna make you thin" ISN'T an infomercial--being on TLC causes it to have some legitimacy when it's total crap! (My opinion of course!)

Change is hard--stay positive!

Howdy!...Perseverance, hard work, determination (reasons for that determination) and positive/realistic attitude are the best tools anybody can have...Just harder for some to find it ALL wrapped up in a nice package to make it work and come out on the winning end of the stick.....

Your very realistic and that is wonderful!...

thinnsidenotout on 03/27/2008:
Thank You biscotti!...... I re-read your entry again today...For some reason I bypassed the rubber band part yesterday... I had to say..You made me laugh...Some things just make sense and how obvious can some things be?... Easier said than done, as most of us know...but, at least we are ALL trying....Have to give the 110% though...

I must say the first 2-3 weeks here @ DD, I was'nt sure I was going to like you, but you have "grown" on me and I look very forward to reading your posts, when you do have an entry.... Keep up the good work and we can be proud of ourselves together...You much less further to go than I, but you had the head-start on me....

Have a wonderful day....

shadetree on 03/28/2008:
Wow - you had a lot to say! I love it when you get on a roll! You are right - my mother and I had a conversation about my losing weight, and how I did it, and she starting throwing out excuses as to why it wouldn't work for her. And I told her that it is simply a matter of hard work and self-discipline. She was a little stunned at that comment...

South Beach has worked with me, although I have found myself allowing a bit more unhealthy carbs than I should lately, so I need to refocus and get more veggies in. (Lately I've had jelly beans, more jelly beans, the cake from Easter, some chocolate here and there...problem with me is when I start eating the not-so-good, I can't stop eating them! As long as I don't start, I'm okay. Which is part of it - the cravings get triggered and it's a vicious cycle!) So I;m getting back to it, and will hopefully get these last ten pounds off!

Have a happy Friday!

I shall be plunging into something to further my exercise goals starting today!

I caught the first two eps of the latest Celebrity Fit Club--I wondered what happened to AJ Benza. He was the host of the E! show Mysteries and Scandals, which I sort of got hooked on late in its run. Of course it pretty much focused on people who were mostly long dead, stars from the 1930s-60s. Even though that was just about 10 years ago, that type of show would probably be on The History Channel these days.

Anyway "Joanie" from Happy Days is also on it--Erin Moran. She's my height, close to my age, but she weighs 127#--just my kind of role model--hahaha--doesn't seem like she needs to lose weight--but she's unfit and wants to improve! It might be interesting--I can at least follow her fitness quest. (I need to focus on mine instead of watching mindless TV, but I can't resist this one.)

If you hate "Biggest Loser," you'll probably like this show. You get to watch out of shape people knock themselves out and it's sort of no-nonsense. But, it's still typical reality TV so it always has some ridiculous drama going on.

Hi. I guess I'm a little confused about the vitamin C. Its one of the restrictions bc it irritates the bladder. I did however just read about supplements for it like allergy C and buffered C crystals that shouldnt irritate the bladder. I dont know I guess I'm just skeptical that vitamin C could replace damaged lining of the bladder. I mean, I tend to get a lot of vitamin C as it is, but I admit thats only with acidic beverages like orange juice that definitely make my bladder hurt. I am however at the point where I'll try anything even I dont have hope that it will actually work. for example L Arginine. My doctor told me to try that, but from what I've read its based on the theory that the body isnt getting rid of the ammonium properly. There are so many different ideas as to what could possible cause IC and this L-arginine theory is only 1 of hundreds. Plus, you can get that amino acid from many different foods and therefor its naturally already present in the body. Why buy it? Thats just one of many examples. But, I'll look into how much the vitamin C supplement costs. I really appreciate how much you've looked into this for me. After dealing with doctors who treat me like crap in my opinion, its so nice to see that there are people out there who do care and want to help.

Oh, how fun!

It's My Birthday--Again!

Oh well, I started my circuit all those days ago--did about three-quarters of my pushups and then had to switch gears and do something else. I moved furniture while doing some spring cleaning (and regular cleaning). Actually alot of it. It's all good!

Not doing myself any favors by not doing my wt trng or other stuff. I did take a short bike ride the other day and also picked up some tree limbs. Did alot of driving.

I screwed up my weigh-in yesterday--not on an empty stomach, so I was up--adjusting for the the coffee--1.5#, so kinda unofficial after a completely unproductive fitness week. I'll actually count the weigh-in next week.

I had been contemplating going and buying another pair, just for many reasons...I told my friend yesterday that I probably would go get another, cause I am in "LOVE" with these shoes!... I never have been a tennis shoe person (usually barefoot or Birki's/Sandals/Slip-Ons) and very picky about how a shoe looks on my foot....These ARE the ones I will wear constantly, so best to have 2 pair....I never used to wear socks either and my heels were so cracked, now that I have been wearing real shoes, my heels are healed and no cracks...YEA!!!!!

Yes, I will have one less puppy mouth to feed, but she's only 1.5#....Does'nt eat much..but I will get $350 for her, so I can go get another pair of shoes and a 40# bag of dog food I think...It takes all 4 of our little doggies 1 & 1/2 months to go through 40# of food.... I wish I could eat that cheap!!! I guess, if I ate dog food huh?.....NEVER!

Thanks for your encouragement...I really do appreciate all your genuine comments, You tell it like it is and that is how it should be....

Hey, good job on the running deficit. I did that for a while, but it was really tough to keep it positive, and after a while it got out of control and eventually it was just too depressing to keep track of it any more.

Thanks for your comment. It reminded me of something I used to do to help me make decisions in the past: I would ask myself which of the two options I would be most likely to regret NOT taking. Because I guess I tend to regret things I didn't do more than things I did. And by that logic I guess I would take the job in Versailles, because I can just imagine myself going to that website afterwards and thinking about how I could have been running it, whereas I doubt I'd ever give that other job a second thought. Hmm...

I know I will get there and it has been with you people here at DD that has been the tremendous help this time 'round and I give a big protion of my so-far success to just being able to "air" my feelings.... Again...THANK YOU!

Much success to you in whatever it is that you set forth to accomplish this month... :}

It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop. --Confucius

For my activity:
Mon: NordicTrack 51 min/5.5 mi
Tues-Thur: Nothing
Fri: DogJog 12 min/Walk 15 min

My Tuesday weigh-in is what it is--I'm up 1.5 pounds. On my measurements I'm up nearly 3 inches overall--yikes! I noticed that I haven't had a calorie count of 3000 or above since Jan 17th, so I'm learning something;-)

Sadly, the snow fizzled out--I was looking forward to a winter wonderland, at least from the looks:-) Then we were supposed to get a few inches Thursday--it didn't happen!

I kinda fizzled out too. I think I'll be able to get all my activity in today. Nevertheless, I did a 12-min test for my jog yesterday, and I can say that it was the same result (.9 mile) as the last two (from last year). So that's a good thing, but as always there's room for improvement owing to--at the very least--future weight loss!

Sun: NordicTrack 61 min/6.9 mi; Circ Aer Wkt using Airdyne (18 min/3.7 mi)

Well, I didn't start Saturday. I had good intentions--then I just said to myself, "Screw it!" I'm finding more and more that if I don't get the majority of my planned exercise in early, my attitude deteriorates. I can get it done, but it's a push!

I did get a few bits of housework done Saturday that I'd been putting off. Thus, I was productive.

It was about 78F on Saturday--we're supposed to have a small accumulation of snow tonight--the first since last fall.

I too have troubles when it comes to waiting to the end of the day for any exercise/walking.... If I can only go a bit (at least 2 miles) in the a.m. that gives me hope for the rest of the day...

Hang in there....your a "smart one" and know what you need to do....DO IT!

Have a great week!

This weather is crazy! You know what to do, but don't be hard on yourself, you're doing great and being consistent!

I am the same way..if I don't get it in when I know is best for me..either I won't or it is really difficult. Have a great evening!

starlight on 03/03/2008:
I am the same way with everything in life. I have to just get it done and over with, otherwise it usually doesnt get done at all. Actually, I remember when I was about 7 years old, I wanted to play with my barbie set that came with a pool. Well, I thought to myself, "I'll play with it in a little while." Then I thought "no, I better play with it now, bc I know I wont want to play with it later." I tell this story only because I think its funny that I knew that about myself as early as the age of 7. I procrastinate with everything so much that a lot of things just don't get done. I think that's a big part of why it is so hard for me to exercise every day. I tell myself, I'll do it later, but then by the time I remember, I just say screw it. Exercise isn't something I can procrastinate with bc its something that HAS to get done daily. uhg... its hard I really admire your ability to keep at it the way you do.

kyrin on 03/04/2008:
Yup! I know all about the "do it early or forget it mentality." My schedule has been rearranged so that I have no excuses. Just do it!

I know you can do it, Biscotti! I know you can!

yaz on 03/04/2008:
sounds like your the (wo)man with the plan! I've learned when you plan it out it happens! best of luck!

thinnsidenotout on 03/05/2008:
Re: "Walking Fret".... I have thought that my thinking process of "not getting the walk in" was probably the fear of a set-back after the progress I have made... I know that I wo'nt gain all the 16# back, by just missing "a walk", but I am the type that if I have a routine down and miss one, just makes it easier the next day to miss too.... I will balance out and be alright, just over-process scenarios sometimes and have to slap some sense into myself (figuratively speaking of course).

Have a great Evening! AND Thank You!

Beth201P on 03/05/2008:
I know the feeling I have a hard time getting exercise in. You are doing great so don't be hard on yourself. Thank you for the comment. Your suppor is so greatly appreciated. I am so happy I am back. I missed this place. Have a great day. I look forward to hearing about your days. Beth :)

Good habits are as addictive as bad habits, and a lot more rewarding. --Harvey MacKay

For my activity:
Wed: Walk 10 min
Thurs: Nothing

I'm not a genius but I can see where my current behavior is taking me.

So here are my goals: Water 80 oz, count calories, etc and maintain at least a 1000 cal/day deficit. No particulars for activity except to get back to the scheduled Circuit Workouts starting tomorrow. Go for a week--too difficult timewise, whatever--reassess! ***Commit to these goals starting tomorrow.***

I can take being right where I am, but not moving forward means that Mother Nature is going to take advantage of my standing still and push me over the cliff--haha! (It's not really that funny.)

I looked back at 2005 and I missed posting for more than a month. So I looked at my little notebook to see if I was writing down my food or anything--I was. I didn't want to repeat that pattern this time. Also I'm going back to weigh-ins on Tuesdays for now.

My "Circuit Streak" has ended at 19 days, which is excellent. I've been taking a complete break from planned exercise--which is good for me to do from time to time.

Thanks for the comment. The IC stands for interstitial cystitis. Its where the lining that protects your bladder from the toxins in the urine has been damaged somehow, so the toxins penetrate the bladder wall causing inflammation and hemorrhaging. Thus its painful and causes you to feel like you have to pee to get the urine out that is "burning" your bladder. Its not incontinance BUT the only medication that has worked for me has actually been vesicare, used for incontinence bc it has an antispasmotic in it. Vesicare is very expensive though and there is no generic for it.

mmuraro on 02/29/2008:
Yea, it's good to change your exercise routine every now and then. I love your quote, it's something to think about. Thanks!

Thank you so much for doing some searching online. I've been to the first website, but I don't think I've heard of the second. I'll definitely search there. So again, I really appreciate it. Have a good day :)

desichick on 03/01/2008:
Hey thanks for you recommendation on the scale, and I really like the quote in this post.

borntocry on 03/02/2008:
Hi biscotti! So, how do you calculate your deficit? What do you estimate your daily calorie intake would be to maintain your weight? I tried going the calorie deficit route once but decided against it because I was worried it would encourage me to think of food as a reward and exercise as punishment. But I might try it again - I quite like the mathematical nature of it.

Thanks for your comments on my diary! No, I didn't have any trouble running with someone else's entry. It isn't allowed, but they can't very well ask 23,000 people to show their ID on race day. They check your ID when you pick up your bib, but the girl who sold me hers went and picked it up for me herself. Though some sellers said that they couldn't do that and that they would send photocopies of their ID cards to the buyers - don't see how that would work, but my husband's co-worker is a runner and she says you can just say you're picking it up for a friend.

I did see some people get turned away right at the finish line 'cause they didn't have bibs at all. That must really suck! Those people are known as "bandits".

Oh, I forgot to ask you, was that a David Bowie quote in your comment the other day? "Turn and face the strange... ch-ch-changes!"

mmuraro on 03/02/2008:
I love your quotes and love Bowie! Have a great day.
