Added monthly average weights graph to top of members public entries.  It is active by default.  If you'd like to remove it from showing on your entries, the option is in the section where you edit your "bio".  (Account Maintenance, edit bio).

To quickly go to your own entries, you can now click on your username above the "logout" in the upper right corner.  (Only works if you're logged-in of course.)

Changed color scheme to blue.  May or may not be final choice.  I did change the graphics at the top to blue also, but you might have to hold down your "Ctrl" button while clicking your "F5" key at the top of your keyboard to see them refreshed as blue.

Added a username search function to the directory.  If you enter a partial name it will return all usernames with the partial phrase in it.

New stuff I'm messing around with:

Changed the "Recent Diary Entries" over to the left side of the screen because I'm planning on reworking the page navigation on the right side just under the login / logout.

Added a pagination type layout to reading peoples diaries.  Before you had to mess around with last 7 days, 30 days, 90 days, or all entries.  If you chose all entries and the person had a lot, it would either load a very long page or "time out" because of trying to transfer too much data.  Now it just automatically loads the last 10 entries and gives page numbers at the bottom of the list so that you can jump around easier.

I've been working on streamlining files, combining files, and fixing some code.  You probably won't see much of this except some of the URL addresses containing different file names.  If you access the website via a bookmark that points to any page except the main homepage, you might start having problems as I make changes to filenames.  There's currently 170+ files in the main file directory that keep the website running and I'm hoping to get that down to less than 50 after I'm done cleaning things up and then deleting the old ones.  That should be easier for me to manage and to remember what each file does.

I plan on messing around with some more lists / searches for the member directory page.

panda22 on 01/15/2011:
Great changes =) I love the page numbers at the bottom...def makes loading entries a lot easier and also getting to certain ones nice and convenient instead of having to scroll forever to get to the date you want!

Thank you for getting us back up so quickly - we appreciate it!

biscottibody59 on 12/16/2010:
A couple things when you can get to them:

1. I can't get to my entire diary or anyone else's for that matter--and again it would be nice to read older diaries (that don't even show up in the list anymore). You had mentioned reminding you of the latter after you got the site back up. No rush, it would just be nice.

2. When uploading a pic, you can put text in that should show up when someone puts their cursor over the pic after the entry is complete. The pic shows up just fine, but the text doesn't.

Thanks, Happy Holidays!

ddwebmaster on 12/16/2010:
It's running into a timeout error on the users with hundreds of entries / years of entries. I'll probably have to institute a multi-page change so that it only loads a certain number of entries per page.

The older user entries can be accessed by going to the homepage, then clicking on the "Public Diaries" link at the top of the page. You'll then see "Click here to search for member diaries that haven't been updated within the past 90 days". It's loading thousands of users into the search box, so it moves pretty slow.

I believe the text that you're talking about entering in the picture upload application is actually an html alternative if someone is browsing with pictures turned off. I don't believe it's supposed to "pop up" when you hover over the picture. People don't do it much anymore, but a few years ago with slower internet speeds, some people would turn off auto picture loading, so the text was just a kind of placemark that would let them know what is was so that they could decide if they wanted to see it or not.

I'll be leaving for Christmas vacation soon and will try to get some updates completed when I get back in January.

I've got things up and running, although there may be some hiccups.  I am planning on switching IP addresses with an ISP next week, so there may be an hour's down time there also.

The new ColdFusion software messed with the bar graphs, so I had to remove them.

Please let me know if you notice anything not working correctly and I'll try to get it corrected as soon as possible.

KathyBlue on 02/21/2010:
Yeah, it still doesn't work for me. But check out my entry yesterday, I could insert a simple hyperlink there so it proves that the text is in plain text and I can do anything I want through HTML.

biscottibody59 on 08/12/2010:
Just noticed that when NOT logged in, the wt charts aren't accessible (on other people's diaries), but the Forum section is fully readable.

In light of some of the personal things on there--someone has put their email address on there (not something I would do) in relation to a planned DDs retreat for instance. So I wondered if it's possible to make the forums (like the wt charts) accessible only by those members who have logged in?

ddwebmaster on 08/12/2010:
This reply isn't directed towards you, biscottibody59, this is just general info. The forums are completely public to read, no login required. As with any public entry, please don't place any information in it that you don't want being available to the world. The weight chart graph not showing unless logged in is actually a bug. I've looked into it a couple times, but couldn't find where I was screwing up the code. It wasn't super important to me, so I just haven't corrected it yet. The graph (if enabled) is supposed to show up in any public posts without requiring a login. The reason for this is that each individual has control over their own personal diary. They can show or not show a graph, they can show or keep an entry private. In contrast, the forums are public only.

I think I've finally completed the rewrite of the forums pages.  I'm sure I'll find more things to tweak, but let me know if you see anything not functioning correctly in the forums section.

Also, if you click on anything on the site that takes you back to the older site design, please let me know which page you were on and what you clicked so that I can try to correct it.

biscottibody59 on 11/22/2008:
Two things--are you supposed to be at least 18 to post here? I can't remember.

Also, it looks like I should be able to put a web address into the image (URL box) editor of the new thingy to create a link. All I get is an X and no link.

ps this applies to both "my diary" and forums.

Thanks!

ddwebmaster on 11/22/2008:
If someone is below legal age (18 in US, but other countries may differ), they need to have their parent's/guardian's permission and supervision. There are technically younger ages where you can be of legal age in the US (emancipated minor) and I have no clue as to other countries specific rules. In general, if I see someone that posts that they are 15 or younger I always try leave them a message reiterating that they need to have parental supervision.

As for the URL box, it is for pictures/images. If you put a url of an image in it, it will load that image into your entry and then you can resize/adjust it. If you find an image on the internet you'd like to include in an entry, the easier way is just to copy and paste the image right into the new entry window. If you're trying to setup a hyperlink to a different site that won't work, you'll just have to post the regular text of the URL address. The reason for no hyperlinks to other sites is so to try to cut down on the possibility of malicious code and / or redirects.

oh. thanks.

biscottibody59 on 02/20/2009:
I don't know about you, but I did a little google check on blogs and I couldn't find a single one identified as a 13 y/o. I've been here a long time and I don't understand why you're continuing to allow a 13 y/o (she wrote a comment to "thinnside40" that she was 13) to post publicly.

Is your policy simply to believe she has permission from her parents just because she says so?

Just wondering. Personally it bothers me because she's dangerously obese for a 13 y/o, logs her food and doesn't eat enough. Others, who are adults are congratulating her for pounds lost when they have no clue what a 13 y/o should be eating.

Alot there, but I wondered where the line was. Would you allow someone who was 10/12/14/15 and stated that they had permission? I ask because there were some 16 y/olds awhile back and I guess you let them be.

Signed, far from 13 or 30!

Thanks! I appreciate the site and your efforts!

ddwebmaster on 02/20/2009:
I'll try to answer in general. I don't read most entries and replies so I don't know who you're specifically talking about. I did load the last 90 days of entries for Thinnside40 and used the browser search function, but didn't come across "13" or "thirteen" (other than dates and one entry by you on 2/13/09).

I guess the main problem is that I don't have a clue how old anyone actually is. Someone may say they're a certain age and in the same breath say that they have parental supervision. The problem is that I don't know if either are true. You seem to imply in your comment that you believe her age, but don't believe her about parental permission.

I guess I don't know of any way to substantiate someone's claims. If I ask for the parent to click a button on the website, who's to say the parent was the one that actually clicked it? If I require written documentation faxed or mailed, who's to say that any of the information (including signatures) are legitimate? If we just don't allow anyone under a certain age on the site, wouldn't they just lie about their age or not even mention it? If we were to require photocopies of drivers licenses or something, they could easily just send a photocopy of an adults license. I guess I'm just at a loss on how to police the site when it comes to age / parental permission.

Due to this, I've just kind of chosen to believe what I'm told unless I see things that would indicate otherwise. My personal desire for underage users would be to have their parents sitting by them watching their every move. The reality may or may not match that, but know there are thousands of worse sites for unsupervised kids to end up on.

I'm not sure I understand what you were meaning by your comment on a google search for blogs by 13 year olds. If you mean you think that most sites only allow adults to post, you'd be incorrect. I did a quick search for age group breakdowns of different internet usages and came across a study at: http://www.pewinternet.org/pdfs/PIP_Generations_Memo.pdf It lists online teens (12-17 years old) as 38% of them reading blogs and 19% of them creating blogs. The only higher usage percentage group than them is the 18-28 year olds. My age group (29-40) only has listed 30% read blogs and 9% create them. If I misunderstood your comment, please forgive me.

It's frustrating to admit, but I don't know where the line is and I don't know how to verify any age / permission claims. I of course don't want anyone harmed or hurt by the use of this site and am open to any suggestions on how to better police things. Also, if there are specific instances I should be aware of, please let me know dates / usernames and I'll look into it.

biscottibody59 on 02/22/2009:
No, I don't think anyone is being harmed, except by her own ignorance and probably neglect by her parents (she's 13 years old and 260-ish#). That sounds a little heavy-handed I'm sure. But you perhaps have chldren yourself.

I'm not saying that children don't and shouldn't blog, I just think it's a little creepy to think that some advice (good or ill) is coming through to them from here. Information they ideally should be getting at home, which just may not be an option for her. I think teens should have a place specifically for teens, which I know is available on some sites. (And most teens probably wouldn't want to write or write to adults.)

One site a couple years ago that I used was probably "policed" by self reporting of age. For instance, if a teen was actually 14 and they signed on that they were 18 they would be directed to the adult section.

haha_love2laugh is her DDs name. I'm going to assume that many are mothers themselves and so they would probably not like to have their child blogging on the sly (or with their permission) and getting help from other adults (obviously total strangers) who may or may not know what's the best advice for a 13 y/o. I don't know:-) That's assuming alot on my part and I guess I should mind my own business--haha!

I completely understand where you're coming from not wanting to turn anyone away. Perhaps for the future you could do a "TeenDietDiaries." Again, I'm probably the only one who would even write you about any of this knowing that most teens (just as most of us, except old die-hards like me) will probably come and go here anyway. I still appreciate the site, but wish that more people were here, it's a little thin (no pun intended) right now--I'm sure you do as well. Oh well!

Yeah, I don't believe she has permission, but that isn't my problem. I guess all things considered, I'd rather see one misguided person (adult or child) get through and possibly eventually get the info she/he needs to be healthy over the long-run than to turn a whole group of people away for WHATEVER reason!

Also, it's not lost on me that we all sometimes give opinions on others food choices, etc though as far as I know NONE of us are professionals. It just seems that a 13 y/o above all deserves the very best information! The others of us as adults aren't as vulnerable.

Thanks for your time!

ddwebmaster on 11/12/2008:
To answer someone's previous question:

The new format with the side margin areas is part of the new design. The way the site's been written since the beginning (1999) has meant that each and every page has to be edited to make changes to the site design. It was also written using tables for layout which was normal back then.

I took over maintenance, upkeep, hosting of the site a few years ago and have had to learn how to use some of the backend software (Coldfusion, MS SQL, others). Since I didn't write the original site pages, I've spent time editing someone else's code which was in various states of a rewrite when I took over. Unfortunately this meant that the style and approach used on some pages was quite different from those used on other pages.

Recently I've been trying to rewrite things using divs and css so that changes can be made easier. I've also been trying to standardize the looks of pages more. I haven't started on the forums section yet, because it's actually written differently than the rest of the site, kind of in cfc modules. The problem with the old layout was having to edit every page, which could each have hundreds of lines of code. Then after each change having to view it in 4 or 5 different browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari).

When the new layout is finished and fully implemented, I'll be able to just change a couple things in one CSS file that will affect all of the pages instantly. Changing the layout from using tables to using CSS divs is cutting down the lines of code on some pages by 20%-30%. It'll probably be awhile before everything gets totally rewritten, but I think it'll end up looking a lot nicer when everything displays properly in the current versions of all of the major browsers. It'll also look nicer when each of the sections looks and behaves more like each other, as opposed to the differences currently seen when accessing the public diaries portion versus using the forums section. It'll also be easier to edit the pages when something needs to change or a new feature needs to be added.

biscottibody59 on 11/12/2008:
Thanks for the comment.

I'm using Explorer 7 (7.05730.11) and there isn't any response when I hover over the button--no color change--it's as if it isn't there. I'm not having trouble other than that.

Well, if you can't change the format for the Public diaries, how about making the right side so that you can close it like a box to increase the amount of space to actually have the actual diary? It's just something I hardly ever use. I guess because it used to be on the home page only. Just seems a little redundant. Just a suggestion. I completely understand the new format may also create new limitations, but I thought I'd ask anyway:-)

I sooo appreciate all you do and are doing and if it makes your life easier I'm all for it!!! I'll just have to get used to it.

Thanks again!

ddwebmaster on 11/12/2008:
Biscottibody59,

I'm not sure what's going on with the forums buttons not working for you. I just checked my Internet Explorer version and it's 7.05730.13, so it's almost exactly the same version. Those buttons don't change when I hover over them, but it does change the look of them when I click (and hold) on them. It might be something to do with your browser security settings. Do you have Diet Diaries listed as a "trusted site"? (tools, internet options, security, trusted sites, sites, unclick require https:, add http://www.dietdiaries.com)

I wish that I could setup column divs to collapse and reopen based on user preferences, but there's no one standard implementation that I'm aware of that would work correctly for all the browsers. Usually features like that only tend to work on 1 type browser. If it were coded to work on Internet Explorer, it'd probably be messed up on the other browsers. Per the site logs only about 70% of the users are using Internet Explorer, so the other 30% would probably have display issues. It'd be nice if all of the browsers displayed things the same way. Most of the display problems encountered with the last layout were only on certain browsers. I'd spend a bunch of time editing a page and have it looking correct on a browser. Then I'd call it quits for the day and just pull up another browser or two to make sure it looked correct, only to find out that it was being displayed differently.

I know the new layout won't be everyone's favorite, some will think it's better, some worse. The main thing is that I think it will be more consistent between browsers, thereby allowing a larger number of people to use the site with everything functioning properly.

ddwebmaster on 11/12/2008:
I'm hoping to be able to rewrite the forums section over the next couple of weeks, so that'll probably take care of anyone's forum button problems.

biscottibody59 on 11/12/2008:
I changed the settings to add DDs--it makes no difference. It seems to have something to do with it being at the bottom of the page. I can click "Edit" on one forum subject I did last week, but not another one that is at the bottom of the page.

ddwebmaster on 11/12/2008:
I was able to duplicate it by making my browser really small. I changed a padding setting and it seemed to fix it on mine, let me know if it's now working on yours.

kzirkle on 11/12/2008:
Thanks for the heads up.

uni4sept2008 on 11/12/2008:
I can't get my graphics to appear in my entries anymore. The old format was a lot more user friendly.

ddwebmaster on 11/12/2008:
Unisept2008,

You can still show those ticker images using the new html interface. Click the image button icon and it'll popup a small window where you paste the web address URL. (The tab on the right is what you use to upload images from your computer.) For example to get the 3fatchicks ticker you have listed in your entry to show you'd paste "http://www.3fatchicks.net/img/bar091/slider-happy/lb/326.5/245/260/.png" into the URL space, without the quotation marks of course.

The reason for having to do it this way is mainly security issues. As you can see from the displayed code in your entry, there's a link in addition to the call to show the picture. The typical user would only see the picture and then when they clicked on it, it would take them wherever the link pointed. That would be fine as long as the link pointed to a safe location (which the 2 in your post do). The problem is that most people just copy and paste code without verifying what exactly the code does. Viruses, malicious sites, spoofed sites, etc can all be linked to and the typical person would only see a nice picture until they'd already clicked on the link. There's also many other things that can cause problems with active links. I won't go into detail, but this site had numerous SQL injection attacks that kept messing up a certain portion of the database that I had to keep correcting. The SQL injection kept inserting spam links in 8000+ records in our "bio" database table portion, which was why the bio section wasn't working properly for a few weeks this fall. I finally traced the problem down to some code that was pasted in someone's diary entry. It was hidden in some style changing stuff that someone was using and I'm sure the person had no idea that they were harming the site just by pasting it in their entry.

Sorry for the long comment, but just thought I'd better try to explain the rationale for some changes.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 11/12/2008:

Hey there--hope you're having a good day!

There's yet another forum that's just selling something--suddenly slim/first fitness is the subject. Thanks!

ddwebmaster on 02/06/2008:
I saw the post and looked into the authors accounts. There's no direct links or web addresses to selling anything, so I'll just leave it for now. I've bee thinking about limiting the public forums to people that have been registered a few days and / or have a few posts in their own diary pages. That might cut down on the number of spammers coming in, but it would also deter new members from jumping in the first few days when their motivation is at its highest.

biscottibody59 on 11/12/2008:
I can't use the forums at all. Can't click on "Add Reply" or even start a new forum message. (They're fully visible now, but disabled for my browser apparently.)

Also, is the public diary "look" the final--the sides are obtrusive in my opinion. I'd rather see banner ads all over the place rather than less space to read other people entries.

I haven't had a chance to use the new thing to make an entry for myself--maybe later today.

Thanks!
