Hello again.
My posted weight is two pounds higher than the last time, but MUCH better than it was last week after a trip of 2 wks. during which I enjoyed the $5 special footlong at Subway at least 5 times plus indulged in McD's 99c hot fudge sundae an equal number of times.
Those are the indiscretions I allow myself while on vacation. And what a price to pay for it!
Well, that is OVER now! The scale rudely shocked me back to reality with a gain of a whopping 5lbs!!! 143? OH, NO! It won't be long before I see 170!!
So, I've really been careful and reduced my food intake considerably. At this point I'm just happy to be in the 130's.
Aside from subs and sundaes being off limits, all the little calorie savers that I had ignored have asumed new importance. Like NO mayo! No whole sandwich - only a half. No butter on veggies. Don't go over the one chocolate a day limit. Weigh and measure EVERYTHING. It makes a BIG difference.
My mindset has to be permanent weight loss.I can't handle maintenance. It's just so easy to abuse good habits.
My most recent low many months ago was 128.5, so close to my goal of 125. And then....it was gone in no time at all. I've always maintained that eternal vigilance is a necessity.
Here I go again.
Progress as of today - 27 lbs lost so far, only 13 lbs to go!
Thanks, friends, for your comments. I'm still plugging away. I'm down a pound without doing anything differently. Two more to get back to where I was.
The heat has let up a bit and along with the daily showers has cooled the temps a few crucial degrees. Maybe now I'll be able to get some much needed yard work done and some calories burned.
With my Latin market selling red peppers at 99 cents lb. I've been enjoying them stuffed and topped w/Velveeta. I like the new version which is white cheese w/spices.
Today I'm going to make a pot of split peas. I find it really weird that I've had such a taste for soups this summer and not salads.
Progress as of today - 29 lbs lost so far, only 11 lbs to go!
Hope you're doing all right there!
Hi everyone. I've made no progress since my last entry. Staying at 136 all last week made me feel hopeful and then today I see 139! I can't figure it out. Maybe too much salt.
I had stopped calorie counting and just listed the food I ate. Then, I stopped doing that and would just list my weight for the day. It's such a hassle to do the counting and I needed a break from it.
I'm still eating the same foods and thoroughlenjoying the fruits of summer. I found some tiny grapes at Whole Foods - Champagne Grapes that are delicious. I love to eat them with Brie and crackers.
Whole Foods is not known for low, economical prices, so I couldn"t believe my good fortune in finding a slice of domestic Brie, about 7-8 oz. in a gold foil covered slice for only $2.99! Unbelievable!
I've run out of time at the library. I'll be back.

We all need a break from time to time from the rigorous counting and tracking. As long as we get right back to it, no harm done.
Finally I'm back to 136. It's been 3 days. This has been some plateau! The eleven pounds separating me from my goal seem insurmountable. I know that complete lack of exercise in this heat is most likely the main reason. I'm really looking forward to cool weather and catching up on a lot of house and yard work.
I've reduced meat intake quite a bit and now "flavor" whatever I'm cooking w/maybe an ounce of beef or pork. Most days are strictly vegetarian which is fine with me.
Orlando son Jim is coming down for a few days on Wed. to visit before the school year starts which means the days he's here will be meat eating days. I'd be very surprised if he brought down a new supply of his bagels because I don't think he's have time to make them. It's a long, tedious process and takes hours. Boo hoo!
I gotta go now. See you Mon.

I saw the ophthalmologist this past week and there's nothing visible going on with the cornea, so it's wait and see--no pun intended:-) Plus there's probably still a little residual rebound effect from coming off the cortisone drops.
I do get some extremely minor pain around the bone on me eye, so I'm hoping this will continue to improve and the eye pain along with it.
I have to remind myself that it's only been a couple of months from the very first symptoms, so I still feel very lucky:-)
(Oops, I deleted a previous comment--you saw it already though, and responded to me.)
It's hot in Miami like it is everywhere else, but it sounds like it's a lot muggier and suffocating in north Georgia according to my daughter and son Jim, from Orlando who's up there working until school starts. He decided to go into teaching and officially reports on Aug. 15. With all the work and stress entailed in starting a new occupation, I won't have to worry about being tempted by his bagels. He won't have the time!
One nice change in the weather in Miami has been the afternoon showers for the past 4-5 days. It really cools down the temps and is bringing my dead yard back to life. Love the green!
The seafood medley and black rice (changed my mind about the wheat berries) were good. I might have the other half today. If not, chicken or steak.
Lunch was a small slice of pumpernickel w/Brie and strawberry jam. Mid-afternoon snack might be a bowl of either broccoli or bok choy.
That's it for now.

I'm down another half pound at 137.5. It is so easy to pack on the weight, but getting rid of it is another matter. Every now and then I splurge and eat foods that I normally don't (son's bagels, McD's fudge sundaes, holiday cheesecake and pumpkin pie, and the latest, salami.) The important thing is to get right back to the "regimen". Otherwise, those extra pounds become permanent.
This recent detour in the heat of summer has been very uncomfortable. Concentrating on fresh fruit, whole grains and cutting back on bread has helped a lot.
Instead of the chicken breast, I decided to finish off the split pea soup and added about 1/2 C leftover kamut. That was dinner. In the evening I had papaya w/NF yogurt and avery tasty red grapefruit. No second chocolate, another bad habit I had begun to establish.
Tonight I'm going to cook a bag of seafood medley in coconut milk and have it over wheat berries (looks, tastes, and chews like a whole grain rice). Same fruits: grapefruit, cherries and perhaps tostones (fried plantain). That's the only fried food I eat and seldom do. My green plantain is just starting to turn a pale yellow so today is the day. If not, I'll wait until it is extra ripe and then bake it.
See you all tomorrow.

Buying Genoa salami 5 days ago was a HUGE mistake! I made the situation worse by buying some hearth bread w/asiagio cheese at Whole Foods. It looked so good I couldn't resist.
Ohhh, did I pay the price for that delicious sandwich! The next morning I was up FIVE pounds! I've held onto this uncomfortable weight because I continued eating Genoa w/Swiss on Asiago cheese bread. The bread is almost gone. I'm down to 3 slices so this treat won't last much longer. Somehow I'm down 3 lbs. this morning, but that's still 2 lbs.more than last week.
I stocked up on Bing cherries which were only $1.99lb this week. They are SOOOO tasty!
I've been snacking on red peppers dipped in hummus and working on split pea soup for 3 days now. Maybe I'll defrost a chicken breast for dinner tonight.
And so it goes.

I didn't disappear again. I've been skimming thru a few diaries. There doesn't seem to be enough time to do all that I want to in the hour and twenty minutes the library allots. It's been ages since my last entry. I'm sad to say there is no progress to report. I'm still hovering at 136-37. It is so hot and humid I've become practically motionless! No way could I consider exercise! Despite the drought, the mosquitoes haven't been affected. They made a big comeback after a few days of rain. I'm attacked every time I go outside, so that's out of the question. I'll just have to wait until the fall and cooler weather.
I've been eating sensibly with lots of fruit and vegetarian days. Meat is not very appealing in the heat. I'm still eating about 4 fruits a day and thoroughly enjoyed the mangoes.
Now, the avocadoes are coming into season. I have one that is ready to eat which I'll have when I get home. I'm going to make a roast beef and provolone sandwich on pumpernickal with avocado slices. Can't wait!
Dinner will be a big bowl of homemade chicken barley soup, the remains from the pot I made yesterday. Was it good!

I'm hitting the fruit hard as well~
Wishing you a great day!
Just wanted to leave you a link to check out in case you hadn't heard of using l-lysine for h. simplex.

My dr told me that her office doesn't keep it and it sounded like this big ordeal to get it through her office. That article is alarming not because of just the price and the hassle, but that so many of the comments were from people who had it multiple times and were also under 50.
There's a nutritional ref book (that many health food stores keep--I happened to see the latest edition at half-price books) that had a category on shingles and one thing I didn't know is that humans are the only species that get shingles, so it hasn't been studied very much.
Also, something else is that it's a live vaccine and with a little more effort/$$$ they could make a vaccine that would be non-live and easier to keep. Cheaper too, I suppose.
At first it just looked like another site to sell stuff, but I found this page with some articles and even the NYT article was in the list. Here's one of the articles: http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/index.php/shingles-vaccine-zostavax-confirmed-safe/
I asked the pharmacist (when I went to pick up a prescription when this all started) and he insisted you can't get it from the shot. So if you get it it's unrelated--you would have gotten it anyway (so the spiel goes).
Here's another: http://www.cdc.gov/shingles/vaccination.html
And to your question, I haven't run across any info so far that relates severity of chicken pox to eventual shingles.
Kathy - I think all fruits go well with either sour cream or cottage cheese.
The weirdest combination I ever heard of when I was in middle school was a peanut butter sandwich w/mayonnaise and cucumber slices. I tried it and loved it! Every time I mention it, people think I'm crazy.
The Chia seeds I mentioned yesterday are the same as those used in Chia Pets. Son Billy got the info about them from my daughter yesterday and promptly went to Whole Foods and came home with a big container of them. I haven't tried them yet. I'll probaby sprinkle them on my cereal. The thought of mixing one part seeds w/9 parts water, letting it set for a bit and then sipping the gelatinous liquid makes me gag.
I followed my plan again yesterday. A combo of lunch and dinner mid-afternoon works well for me, but today I was hungry I couldn't do it. At noon I had some leftover eggplant lasagna. I have no idea what to have for dinner. For sure I'' have red pepper slices w/hummus and a mango. If I get around to cutting up the papaya, I'll have a cup w/sour cream. I should make a salad. With so much stuff to cut up I usually run out of steam, the only reason I haven't had one this week.
See you tomorrow.

Good for you cutting back on the coffee--sounds like it's been a good thing for you! The half-life of caffeine is 6 hrs--meaning 6 hrs after consuming it there is still half the amount in your system--6hrs after that half of that, and so on. This is a rule of thumb and it can be different (shorter or longer half-life) for each person depending on their physical circumstances.
I definitely feel after this experiment in cutting back that I have some residual effects many hours later than I should even with the 6-hr half-life rule--so in my case I'm chalking it up to one more perimenopause/menopause thing.
I think of myself as a coffee drinker--I used to drink several pots/day in my 20s and thought nothing of it. It was just part of my day. Decaf is okay, but I wouldn't go out of my way to drink much of it these days.
Have a good week!
Down another 'surprise' pound and feeling better. It usually takes 3-4 days to lose the bloat.
My food plan yesterday worked very well. Lunch/dinner at 4 was filling and satisfying. The only addition to the plan was pineapple w/sour cream. I had forgotten I had it, but it was still okay.I had the celery and hummus at 9:30 and the luscious mango near midnight.
I had one more ripe and ready plantain so I'll have the same foods as yesterday. Hopefully I'll be back to 136 by tomorrow.
I've drifted sofar away from 130 it feels as if I'll never get back, but I'll keep trying.
During my absence on DD's, was the topic of Chia seeds brought up? My daughter called this morning to tell me about them and thatt essentially it's the new "miracle' food: high in omega 3's and an all around wonder food; esp. good for runners who swear by them. And so on. If anyone is interested I'll post the info.
