Thursday - 1680 calories

The last day of Indecision 2006 almost ended in a 2000+ calorie day. Dreamer son had NO idea I had waited so many hours to hear from him the night before. The new plan for the last day was that a friend of his brother's would bring him to my house between 11-12.

At 2pm he called to say that his Dad was on his way over. What that meant was not explained. I pressed him for a clear picture saying I was starving. "Go ahead and eat. Don't wait for me."

Being a bit discouraged that we couldn't have one last meal together, I ordered a stromboli, picked it up and had taken just one bit of it when my Ex called me to say they were on their way over and if I'd like to join them for lunch at the barbecue place! I agreed and put the stromboli in the fridge for later.

At the restaurant I ate the meat and cole slaw, saving the sweet potato for the doggie bag. I also had one beer.

It was a very nice lunch and we had a good time.

In the evening I ate the stromboli and one truffle.

I'm sure the one pound gain this morning is due to the salt restaurants pour over their food, because I had fewer calories yesterday than I had had for the three previous days.

Today has been an excellent eating day: 1 C cantalope, shredded wheat w/flaxmeal & whole milk, vegetable soup. Later will be a big salad, pineapple and maybe another bowl of vegetable soup.

If anyone watched the ice skating competition last night, the Canadian who won the bronze is almost an identical twin to my Dreamer son. Honestly, his hair style and color, smile, features, slim, athletic build and flexibility. It was unbelievable!

Hi geevee,

Wow - your Dreamer son is a cutie!! That must make it easier to put up with his unpredictability somewhat. At least now you can get back to your regular eating habits.

Thanks for the comment you left me. Canned lentils are available here (not black beans, which are unknown to the French and only available in Indian or American stores) but I feel like the dry ones taste better. It's probably just my imagination, I'm sure. In any case, I've been trying to make my soup in such small amounts that I wouldn't be able to use up a whole can at a time, so I'm better off just using them dry.

As for sambar, there are many different variations of it, but I actually wanted to stick to the "regular" soup vegetables, at least for now. I used half a cup of yellow split peas, a cup of cauliflower, half of a small potato, half a carrot, some peas, a tomato, and a little onion and garlic. There were a few other ingredients which are specific to sambar, like tamarind paste (to make it sour) and of course some typical Indian spices like turmeric, cumin, and dried red chilies. But the best part is the topping, which is a feature of many South Indian dishes. It involves toasting a teaspoon of dry split peas, some cumin seeds, and a couple of chopped cashews in a little bit of oil and then stirring it into the finished soup. It gives the whole thing a lovely flavour and adds a little crunch!

I am planning to try a more unusual soup this weekend though - it's a Lentil Soup, but with plantains! I've actually been putting this off for a while now because of all the calories, but I bought the plantain a while back and it's turned pretty black so I should probably use it soon.
