(Clean eating - serious workouts)
Weight: 147.6

Hope everyone is doing well.

Not 100% yet, but getting there. Went back to the gym this morning. Hope to get back to my normal intensity next week.

Workout at gym:

  • 30 mins spin bike
  • 5 mins rowing machine
  • 4 x 12 on 4 resistance machines
  • 3 x 12 rope/pulley for triceps

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/dried fruit/cinnamon/almond milk
  • L:  glass noodle soup, 1/2 cheese sandwich, orange, yogurt
  • D:  chickpea & cauliflower curry & basmati rice, salad
  • tea w/soy milk, herbal teas, flavoured water, water, coffee w/almond milk

Cals:  1373

Had to buy a new food scale today.  I've worn out the button on the other one as I have to push it 3 or 4 times to zero it out.  Well, it was about 10 years old....

Progress as of today: 19.4 lbs lost so far, only 15.6 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 02/18/2015:
Yay for getting back to the gym. I'm thinking of getting a food scale for the bulk items we get through our co-op. I don't usually weigh out foods for myself but it would come in handy for measuring ingredients occasionally. The main thing is we often split 25 or 50 lb bags of rice, flour etc. from the co-op and the scale would be handy for dividing things up. Let me know if you have recommendations :)

grannyannie on 02/18/2015:
Digital is best. These have the option of grams/kg or lbs and goes up to 5kg but there are bigger ones. I never used one before moving here but everything here is calories per 100 grams and recipes are metric as well. So my oats for porridge are weighed in grams, nuts, dried fruit, my flour for baking, fruit, etc. It seems to be much more accurate than measuring things by cup (like grapes), or guessing what 'medium' sized means.

Umpqua on 02/18/2015:
Thanks Annie. I occasionally make recipes that have metric measurements so it would be useful for conversions. I think a regular sized one would work fine, we typically portion out bulk stuff into gallon ziplock bags and measure by 5 or 7 lbs. So something that goes up to 10 lbs would probably work. I'll have to start researching my options!

grannyannie on 02/18/2015:
Mines 5kg so is 12+lbs. But they probably come in 10lb size over there.

puddles on 02/18/2015:
Personally I have never used a scale but I can understand if you get stuff in bulk. The instruction on most of the stuff I use is on the box and usually gives cup size or tablespoon size and I figure if I am off it is not by too much. Wishing you a great day.

grannyannie on 02/18/2015:
In the UK measurements are all metric and calories are given as per 100g. So my porridge instructions say 40g plus 250ml liquid. No other way to measure.

thinnside40 on 02/18/2015:
Glad your feeling better :)

Weight: 147.6

Good morning!  About 80-90% well.

Didn't do my dumbbells yesterday as I got lazy.  So did them today as well as lower body.  I didn't want to overdo so did less of everything. Gym tomorrow.

The muesli kept calling my name and I didn't want to be rude   I just had to throw the rest of it in the bin.

A normal workout is 4 sets of everything, and I'm sure I'll be back to that next week.

Workout at home (upper):

  • dumbbells - 3 sets of 12 - 11 routines
  • push ups - 3 x 12
  • triceps dips - 3 x 12

Workout at home (lower):

  • side dips w/dumbbell - 2 x 10
  • squats with dumbbells - 2 x 10
  • lunges w/dumbbells using step - 2 x 10
  • lunges w/dumbbells - 2 x 10
  • side lunges w/dumbbells using step - 2 x 10
  • thighs/glutes with ankle weights - 3 x 12 - 3 routines (using the 2.5 lb ones instead of 2kg and will work my way back)
  • planks - full x 3
  • abs-4 routines x 3
  • bridge (for glutes, core, thighs) - 9 x 10 seconds
  • calf lifts w/dumbbell - 2 x 10

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/dried fruit/cinnamon/almond milk
  • L:  2 whole grain toast w/hummous, yogurt, large orange
  • D:  chickpea and cauliflower curry & basmati rice, salad
  • tea w/soy milk, herbal teas, flavoured water, water, coffee w/almond milk

Cals:  1378

Progress as of today: 19.4 lbs lost so far, only 15.6 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 02/17/2015:
Yay for feeling better and getting back to a normal routine! I didn't realize muesli was so high in calories - best to throw it out if it's a temptation.

grannyannie on 02/17/2015:
Thanks! Anxious to be back to 100%. The muesli I bought had dried fruit, hazelnuts, almonds, coconut, really delicious! And addictive. A small serving is 190 calories.

puddles on 02/17/2015:
I have often put things in the garbage bin before I could do myself anymore arm. Congrats on doing that. Your exercise is wonderful. Have a great day.

grannyannie on 02/17/2015:
Thanks. I baked chocolate chip brownies once to take to someone's house for a gift, and then couldn't visit. I ate a few and had to dump the rest. Brownies are a serious weakness of mine.

thinnside40 on 02/17/2015:
I just read something that was kinda funny, but also wise. "If you say "no" once in the store and don't bring it home. You'll not have to keep saying "no" if you would of bought it and took it home" :)

grannyannie on 02/17/2015:
That's what normally happens here - don't buy it, can't eat it. And husband isn't a junk or sugar eater so that helps a lot.

biscottibody59 on 02/17/2015:
Sad to throw it away, but sometimes it must be done--I'm sure it's not sitting in the bin crying:-) My weakness is wheat chex and I only buy it occasionally.

Glad you're finally recovering from the cold, etc!

Oh, and keep up the good work:-)

grannyannie on 02/18/2015:
Hiya Biscotti! There wasn't really that much left when I dumped it. It had to go!!

Feeling about the same as yesterday but do have some energy. Cleaned the bathrooms, doing some organising with husband's massive collection of t-shirts!  And will do some of my upper body dumbbell routines. Don't know if I'll do my usual amount.

Stuck to menu yesterday although too many calories, except that I forgot about the popsicles I had and had the last two.  So cooling on my throat.

Menu:

  • B:  muesli w/almond milk, toast, tea w/o soy milk
  • S:  yogurt
  • L:  2 whole grain toast w/hummous, orange, flavoured water
  • D:  red curry and basmati rice, salad, flavoured water
  • Lots of water, herbal teas, latte w/almond milk

Calories:  1476

Thanks for your good wishes!

Seemed like I coughed all night on Friday but last night was much, much better.  I've just been doing the minimum housework - keeping the kitchen clean, doing laundry, and keeping things tidy.  So today I dusted and hoovered the living room, washed the kitchen floor, and cleaned up the laundry room.  That was enough.  Bathrooms and bedrooms tomorrow.

I hope to get to the gym on Wednesday.  Will try doing my upper body strength workout tomorrow at home.

Menu which I intended to stick to but husband brought me a bottle of ale for a treat.

  • B:  muesli, banana, toast, soy milk, tea w/milk
  • L:  2 whole grain toast w/hummous, yogurt, grapes, flavoured water
  • D:  Veggie red curry & rice with asparagus, salad, flavoured water
  • Lots of water, herbal teas, latte w/almond milk

Calories:  1511    + One bottle of ale - calories unknown

I've been missing the muesli I ate every morning in Thailand, so I stupidly bought some while buyiing groceries last week.  It is soooo good but soooo high in calories.  I measured out a serving size which is 45g and is a tiny amount.  I probably ate 4 times that amount in Thailand almost every morning.  So it wasn't just the beer, cocktails, and ice cream that put the weight on me! I've added my gram scale to the packing list for next trip to Thailand.

Progress as of today: 19.4 lbs lost so far, only 15.6 lbs to go!

nenak on 02/15/2015:

grannyannie on 02/16/2015:
Slowly but surely. :)

puddles on 02/15/2015:
Yes I love those also. That is on the no no list for my house and actually any cereal of any kind I use them as snacks. Have a great day.

grannyannie on 02/16/2015:
Same here - cereal is a tempting snack. I eat porridge for breakfast, and hubby eats toast. But hot porridge wasn't appealing in Thailand where it was 80 degrees by breakfast.

thinnside40 on 02/15/2015:
Good. On the road of getting better :)

grannyannie on 02/16/2015:
Very very slowly but heading in the right direction. :)

Awww I hope you feel better soon. I came down with something too, nothing major, probably a small strain of the flu - so dr gave me flu medicine. I seem to be getting better quickly...and even exercised yesterday...hence the reason my progress has slowed yet again with this bug!

grannyannie on 02/14/2015:
Thanks! I think I overdid it at the beginning of this cold.

Good morning!

Still coughing a lot.  Didn't have to blow my nose too often yesterday but woke up with it totally blocked.  Arghhh.  I snacked yesterday so went over calories, but none was junk as there is no junk in the house.  My weakness is oatcakes (Scottish oatcakes - made with oats, oil, salt and 36 calories each). Healthy, but high cal if you eat too many.

Had to grocery shop today and did not buy any oatcakes.  Got some ice lollies/popsicles as they sound nice for my throat.  Also got some huge oranges as well as all the other fruit and veg.

Phoned the dentist to cancel my teeth cleaning appt. tomorrow.

Not making a menu plan today.  I've stuck to calories every other day since being sick.  So I'm just not counting today as it stresses me out to go over.  Not going to be a pig either.

It's very foggy today although temps are mild so I'll cheer myself up with a Thailand photo. Me in the pool at a mere 7 or 8 pounds overweight before serious indulgences.

I love how the women wear bikinis no matter what their shape or size.  And it actually is more comfortable not to have the wet material of a one piece around your middle.

Progress as of today: 19.4 lbs lost so far, only 15.6 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 02/11/2015:
Annie, you look fantastic! I love your bikini too, very pretty. It sounds like you are slowly recovering, I hope you continue to feel at least a little better.

grannyannie on 02/11/2015:
Thanks! I'll be fine it's just taking too long! I'll be working out hard when I get back to it.

museumgirl on 02/11/2015:
Ahh that looks lovely. Thanks for sharing! Have a good day and hope you feel better. I think a little extra snacking when you are ill may be a good thing...

grannyannie on 02/11/2015:
It was lovely and warm. Miss it! Yes, at least I'm not eating rubbish food.

puddles on 02/11/2015:
You do look relaxed in that picture. Great to look back on those days. Keep warm and hope you feel better soon. Have a great day.

grannyannie on 02/11/2015:
Very relaxed. I just loved floating in the pool or the sea as both were so warm. Had to do it early morning or late afternoon as the sun is too strong.

thinnside40 on 02/11/2015:
Hope your better soon..You and that water both look terrific!

Yep, still sick and going stir crazy!  Hubby is worse with his whining about being stuck inside. Don't want to drive into town to shop so husband is getting the leftover chili and curry and I'm having a Quorn pie.  I'll have to go shopping tomorrow though.

Menu:
  • B:  porridge/dried fruit/cinnamon/almond milk
  • L:  2 wheat wraps w/low fat cheddar, yogurt, clementine
  • D:  Quorn veggie steak pie, salad w/slivered almonds and walnuts
  • tea w/soy milk, herbal teas, flavoured water, water, coffee w/almond milk

Cals:  1291

I'll see how I feel this afternoon and might do my upper body strength training with dumbbells.

Another Thailand photo: Buddha statues and images everywhere.

Progress as of today: 19.4 lbs lost so far, only 15.6 lbs to go!

museumgirl on 02/10/2015:
Aww, love the Buddha with his kitten! Hope both you and the husband feel better soon.

grannyannie on 02/10/2015:
Thanks! Isn't the kitten cute. Protected by the Buddha.

puddles on 02/10/2015:
Hope things are going to start looking up for you and your husband. Wishing you a better day.

Thanks. Really going stir crazy here!

Umpqua on 02/10/2015:
That's an adorable picture. Feel better soon, darn it!

grannyannie on 02/10/2015:
Thanks, I'm really tired of this. And I need some snacking today that I shouldn't have. No junk in the house so that helps some.

HOpe you feel better soon!

grannyannie on 02/11/2015:
Thanks. Me too!

grannyannie on 02/11/2015:
Aye, just have to deal with it.

thinnside40 on 02/10/2015:
Letting sickness have it's way with ya is hard. Sorry about it.

Uh oh.  Sick, bored and needing comfort I did overeat yesterday.  Since there is no junk food in the house it was mainly oatcakes, low fat cheese, 2 small glasses of my hubby's home brewed beer.

MUST resist today!

Still resting today but strictly sticking to the menu.  Hope to start working out again sometime later this week.

Menu:
  • B:  porridge/dried fruit/cinnamon/almond milk
  • L:  fried egg sandwich on whole grain, yogurt, clementine, apple

Ack.  Feel worse again. It's in my lungs and has moved back into my nose.  The sore throat which came back yesterday afternoon is better this morning though. I'm sure we've got more than one strain of a virus (googled and see it's quite common).

Resting.  Reading. Internet, of course.

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/dried fruit/cinnamon/almond milk
  • S:  whole grain toast w/spread and jam (craved some toast which seems to be comforting when I'm ill).
  • L:  glass noodle soup w/few prawns, 2 oatcakes w/low fat cheddar
  • S:  raspberries, clementine
  • D:  veggie chili (hubby makes giant pots of chili or curry which we eat for several days) & basmati rice, salad
  • tea w/soy milk, herbal teas, flavoured water, water, coffee w/almond milk

Hope everyone has a good and healthy Sunday!

Ugh, feel better! Your food sounds really good :) That picture is beautiful. Do you take these photographs? They could be in a book...

grannyannie on 02/08/2015:
Thanks! Yes, the photos are mine. I've had a few on the cover of an academic journal - just credit for it, no money, but that's okay. This one was taken the first time we discovered this amazing restaurant - I kept jumping up from dinner to get shots of it.

Resting.  Husband is much worse than me with every symptom. I'm coughing with a slightly runny nose.

Scale went down nearly 5 pounds so I'm guessing it was fluid retention then loss. Maybe I didn't gain as much as I thought. Will see.

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/dried fruit/cinnamon/almond milk
  • L:  grilled cheese on whole grain w/low fat cheddar, yogurt
  • S:  cherries, strawberries
  • D:  veg chili & basmati rice, salad
  • S:  low fat cottage cheese
  • tea w/soy milk, herbal teas, flavoured water, water, coffee w/almond milk
Cals:  1398 (too high for a non-workout day, but then I didn't eat the cottage cheese last night that I had on my menu yesterday).
