Hey DDers

Hope you are all doing well in your different ways :-)

Well I went to see the dietician on Tuesday and she seemed very good. She explained to me about low GI foods in a much clearer way than the practice nurse had done, so I understand it better now. She said that the advice she was giving me (to help me with my impaired glucose tolerance)  was the same advice that she gives to her diabetic clients.  She went over what I have been eating for the past few weeks, when I have been losing about 2lbs a week, and was quite impressed that I had already started trying to lose weight. Apparently lots of people wait until they actually see the dietician before they make any effort to lose weight, whereas I started to follow the guidelines for lowering my cholesterol with diet weeks ago, when I had the first blood test results back in early February. That was before I knew anything about my blood glucose problems!  In the end she said that I could actually afford to be eating a little more, so that I would only lose about 1 lb a week. She thinks that in the long run I will find it easier to sustain the changes I have made to my eating habits if i cut myself a little more slack. Consequently I have followed her advice and I will be interested to see if I have lost anything at all when I have my weekly weigh-in tomorrow.

I have really been enjoying my times on the treadmill this week. I am definately starting to feel like I have more stamina and energy. I have been doing a lot of thinking this week about the changes I have made to my lifestyle. It's strange but this time around I don't feel as if I am dieting as such. I just think that this is the way I must be for the rest of my life if I want my life to be a long and healthy one.  And I really do want my life to be a long and healthy one !!! .  I will be back tomorrow with the results of my weigh-in !!

Progress as of today: 30 lbs lost so far, only 47 lbs to go!

sweetpea1977 on 05/06/2011:
Sounds like you had a successful visit with your dietitian. I wish I could talk to her about my plateau/weight gain issues! Im so lost and impatient!! lol

Yay! Im so glad you are enjoying th treadmill and the benefits it is providing you. I also think its wonderful that you're viewing these food and exercise changes as a lifestyle change and not as a diet. I despise the word diet when it is used in the weightloss/becoming healthier context. It should be banned! :)

hollybelle on 05/06/2011:
Glad the dietitian was helpful! I'm interested to know how the calories for losing 1 lb per week differ from those to lose 2 lbs per week. How many more cals did she say you could eat per day? 500? I try to think of lifestyle instead of diet, too. I hate the D word. I just want to lose and KEEP it off. I do fine for YEARS at a time and then wham, bam - I find myself about 15-20 lbs overweight again and miserable, get up the gumption to lose again and the cycle begins again over the next 3 or so years. I'm sort of like a SLOW yo-yo!

So glad that your energy and stamina is building and that you have got a grip on the new low gi diet. My daughter is a diabetic and so I know that it can be difficult to balance carbs and proteins. Good luck with the weigh in tomorrow:)

biscottibody59 on 05/06/2011:
Wow--so much good news. Go greengirl!

Nice to hear you're getting something out of the dlife website--glad I mentioned it and more important that you can see the videos.

Your attitude is very inspiring. I've got to get on the ball!

Weight: 197.0

I'm a bit despondent today. My daughter has gone back to her University for the last few weeks of this semester. When she comes home in four weeks it will be until September. It is very hard to part with her. I couldn't even stand on the platform and watch her train pull out of the station because I was filling up and I didnt want her to see me crying !!  I'm hoping next time I see her I'll be 7 or 8 pounds lighter :-)

I went on the treadmill this morning and did about 35 minutes when my sister turned up to see Sarah before she went back. Sis came to give her some cash as a treat :-)  I managed two miles before sis turned up so I wasn't too annoyed that she disturbed my exercise AGAIN !!  I'm doing pretty good with the eating again, and when I get back to work It'll be easier. I love the long weekends off but there are more temptations at home than when I'm at work.

Yesterday, when I was walking back from doing the shopping my eldest son and his wife spotted me and stopped the car for a chat. I've seen my son a few times recently but it's the first time I've seen my D-in-L for five weeks and the first words out of her mouth were 'You've been on the treadmill. I can tell'  I love it when people start to notice that you are changing shape :-)

On Tuesday I have my appointment to see the dietician that comes to our doctor's surgery. I will let you know how I go on !!

Progress as of today: 30 lbs lost so far, only 47 lbs to go!

hollybelle on 05/01/2011:
Sorry you will miss your daugter so much, Anne. It's so peaceful since daughter has been gone with hr friends so much this weekend. But she is around alot trying to take over the house LOL! I just hope she is off studying for final exams which are this week. I like your goal of being 7-8 lbs lighter next time you see your daughter. Good goal. Also good work on the treadmill. What a nice DIL to notice! Will await hearing about the dietitian this week!

mcwoo40 on 05/02/2011:
Hiya Anne, can't imagine what it's like for you to have your nearest and dearest to go away for a long while. When older daughter went to France last year for 10days i really missed her and had a lump in my throat when i said goodbye.Last time my sister did my hair she said i looked as though i had lost weight in my face, gives you a little boost does'nt it.Fingers crossed for tues, hope they are not too strict with you, dietwise.Enjoy your day off,i have been in this morning, roll on sunday for my next day off,ta ta

biscottibody59 on 05/02/2011:
Down another pound--good going! Glad you got through the eating/celebrating--though sometimes it's good to test ourselves like that. (I usually OVERtest myself--haha!)

I caught all the high points of the wedding--but still have the long BBC show they put up on our public tv station--it's just so rich with all the tidbits I love:-) So that'll take me awhile to get through.

Enjoy your week despite your daughter's departure--hang in there!

Maria7 on 05/02/2011:
Thanks for your comment to me. Good going on the treadmill. I walk on mine sometimes, too and walk other places, too. Walking helps a lot. Hope you feel better. Take care. :-D

:( I know it is going to be a huge tear fest when I surprise my Mommie on Sunday :) I am trying not to think about leaving her a week later :( It gets tougher each visit, but I cherish out time together :)

Weight: 197.0

Hey people, I woke this morning still feeling sick and horrible and with a bloated belly !! I didn't even eat a massive amount yesterday but it was all the bad stuff. After weeks of eating healthily my tummy didn't appreciate the sugar, fat and alcohol (see photos of the evidence on the posting below) that I consumed in a wave of madness. My only excuse is that my sister had gone to a lot of trouble to prepare the food for us, and also I felt obliged to toast the happy royal couple as they got married.  To make me feel even worse this morning was my weekly weigh-in. I still managed to lose one pound but I feel sure it would have been two if I hadn't felt so bloated.

Never mind, it is onward and upward for me. I got straight back on the straight and narrow, healthy breakfast, 40 mins on the treadmill and I then walked the half mile or so to the nearest supermarket to do a little bit of food shopping.  I have been sat in the garden reading since I got back from shopping. The sun is shining but unfortunately it is accompanied by a brisk easterly wind which is keeping the temperatures down quite a bit. If it wasn't for the breeze I think it would be an absolute scorcher today. I'm not in work until Tuesday as we have a bank holiday on Monday so I'm going to have a relaxing rest of the weekend.

Hope you all have a great weekend too :-)

Progress as of today: 30 lbs lost so far, only 47 lbs to go!

hollybelle on 04/30/2011:
Good. yesterday behind us on to healthy foods and being good to us!

hollybelle on 04/30/2011:
Yes, Beatrice and her sister looked so tacky. Also Price Harry's gf - did not get good reviews here as she was deemed "too messy" looking-no polish. Also I thought Victoria Beckham REALLY missed the mark - One does not wear black to a wedding - ever. (I did hear of a Black and White wedding one time, though were every one of the guests was requested to wear black or white.) Vicki looked like she was attending a funeral instead of a wedding - she could have done much better. OK that's all I'll say about the wedding (probably)!

mcwoo40 on 04/30/2011:
Hiya Anne, how could you resist them lovely goodies because i could'nt.Like you said put it behind you.You know you have learnt a lesson not to overdo.Just come in from taking alfie, flippin wind, not too cold though, and i warm up when walking anyway.Enjoy the rest of your time off :)

moogy on 04/30/2011:
Onward and downward surely greengirl!! LOL Hey! one pound down is good, imagine if you had put one pound on!! Enjoy your extended weekend:)

god i feel horrible !!

Today started well. i got up at 8 oclock and had breakfast and then set up the treadmill so I could go on it and watch the preparations for the royal wedding on the TV. I did 30 minutes then went and had a shower and got ready to go to my sister's house where we daughter and myself were going to watch the wedding itself. I took a bottle of champagne that I had for a while (it was a gift) and my sister and niece had prepared a buffet lunch for tha ladies of our family. We had a great day but I gave in and ate a pile of stuff that I shouldnt have. Because I have been so careful for weeks about how much I have been eating I now feel stuffed and bloated and sick !! I will put up a photo of the main culprits !! I'll also add one of the silly photos of my family with masks on !!

Progress as of today: 29 lbs lost so far, only 48 lbs to go!

KathyBlue on 04/29/2011:
lol, fancy cakes! How was the wedding? We were struck by an ice storm and it's all over the news, instead of the wedding.

hollybelle on 04/29/2011:
Well, I must say those pastries look wonderful. Get back on the program tomorrow and move forward past the weddng festivities I thought it was wonderful-the wedding, that is. THE dress was fabulous! I loved it. I knew Katherine would wear something exquisite. She has such wonderful taste. I am watching the best and worst dressed guests now. David Beckham got top honors and I must say I agree!! The Queen mum looked wonderful and the beautiful love knot broche was great. Our TV named the worst dressed as Eugenie and Ann and another lady whose name I didn't catch (she had a sort of sculptured headdress in beige on) and I personally thought Camilla could have done much better - the hat was too big for my taste, Of course you know this is all tongue in cheek and my opinion. Really cute pic above. I'm so happy you got to celebrate with family and had the girls party. Very festive.

~Moody~ on 04/29/2011:
LOLOL, how cute is the family picture!! I watched the wedding too~thought it was beautiful~

Sorry your tummy is so upset..in one way it's a good thing, simply because it's a testiment to how your body isn't used to foods like that anymore..Hang in there and hope you feel better very soon!

h82bfat on 04/30/2011:
It's kind of a good thing that your tummy is upset. Means it can't take all that "crap" anymore! Which means PROGRESS!! Hey, don't dwell on it (for too long). Shake it off & start a new day (which is where I currently find myself too - thank you very much!!!). ~ love the family photo! They make such a nice couple, Diana would be so proud wouldn't she?!

I've had a lovely holiday weekend off, and the weather has been wonderful for the time of year but now I am back to work tomorrow and the big grey clouds are rolling in. I definately think we are going to have rain !!  I have been on my treadmill every morning, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Unfortunately on Saturday morning and this morning too my sister called round unexpectedly so I curtailed the length of time I was on the treadmill. On Saturday I only did 30mins and this morning I managed 40 mins before she turned up. I love her dearly but I must admit to rolling my eyes when she did it the second time this morning!! I was well into the swing of it too having walked  two miles in exactly 35 minutes, and thinking I might do three today!! I finished up on 3.68 kilometers which is about 2.3 miles, It really bugs me that the treadmill readings are in km when I think in miles. It means I have to keep using a converter to know how far I go ! I have been very good this weekend with the food I have eaten, especially when you consider how much chocolate has been around. I haven't eaten any at all !!

I have three days back in work now and then I am off for another four day weekend. I am hoping to get on the treadmill everyday again but I think I will try for an earlier time to try and avoid more interruptions from my sister.

Have a great week everyone and I'll catch up with you all again soon :-)

Thanks for your support--it's another opportunity to capitalize on things if nothing else!

Hope you enjoy the wedding watching if you're doing that--it's pretty crazy how the media outlets are all following it as if it's the biggest thing EVER. It's sort of shoved in front of anyone on nearly any channel here at some point. I guess they know it's going to sell tons of whatever--fairy tale.

biscottibody59 on 04/28/2011:
I'm getting sucked in--I think I'm going to watch the wedding coverage:-) I hope you're deep in slumber at this hour . . .

Yay the scale shows I am under 200lbs for the first time in a long while. I was absolutely thrilled to see the reading this morning. In fact I stepped on and off the scale a couple of times just to make sure. I have had lots of temptations which I have managed to resist this week because of  Easter treats. When my boss brought in a small hatbox full of easter goodies and everyone was scoffing them down at the desk I nearly gave in but in the end I decided to take a small egg and a chocolate chick home for my daughter. I'm off until Tuesday now for the Easter break, and then I am only in three days and then off for another long weekend. We have a royal wedding next Friday which has been made a bank holiday, and the following Monday is also a bank holiday for Mayday. I love it because it means I have lots more time and energy to get on my treadmill. the weather has been glorious here in the UK so I have also been getting lots of fresh air. Great week all round really :-)

Hope you all have a great Easter and don't overdo the chocolate eggs !!

hollybelle on 04/24/2011:
You are 2 lbs below, too! Kind of made the not endulging in the goodies worth it, didn't it. I have had a few eggs leading up to now, that Easter is here I don't really want anymore. We are going out to eat this year with my parents. So not cooking and I should be able to keep it under control. Sounds like you have a few work holidays coming up. THE wedding is all the news here. How do folks in the UK really view the event? I must say they are a beautiful couple. They seem much warmer and real than Chas and Di. But looking in from afar - who can say......it will be a big day there and we will be watching on tv.

biscottibody59 on 04/24/2011:

Weight: 200.0

Hey everyone. I feel as if I have had a good day today. I slept well but woke earlyish for a weekend. I got up about 7.30 am and did a few chores before hubby and daughter got up. i was ready for my exercise on the treadmill by about 9.30 and got a little carried away. I intended doing 30 minutes again but because I was talking to my daughter I missed the 30 min mark and by the time I looked at my readings I had done 2 miles in 38 minutes. I thought I may as well carry on until 45 mins as I was really enjoying it so ended up doing 3.8 kilometres (about 2.4 miles). I still felt fresh when I got off the treadmill. Later me and hubby went food shopping so we walked another mile or so in the round trip to the supermarket. After lunch i sat in the garden for a while (in between putting washloads on the line to dry) and made the most of the spring sunshine. But later in the afternoon I went and  lay on my bed and watched the latest Harry Potter DVD whilst my husband watched the football (soccer) on the TV.

I forgot to mention that yesterday I had an appointment to see the practice nurse at my doctors surgery to discuss the implications of my impaired glucose tolerance. I am confused about the best diet for this. The nurse told me that , for example, fried egg and chips (fries) would be considered an acceptable meal for a diabetic or someone with glucose intolerance as it has a lower GI than a lot of carbohydrates because of the fat !!  I don't think I want to start eating a load of fat to help slow down the uptake of glucose in my blood or understand how that would help me to lose the weight I have been advised to . i think that for now I will carry on as I have with the diet to reduce high cholesterol and wait until I see the dietician to get my head around what I should be eating to reduce the glucose in my blood !!!  The nurse also told me that baked potatoes are not the best way to eat potatoes, which is a shame because I really enjoy them. She said that boiled new potatoes in their skins are a much better option. This again is because they have a lower GI.  This is all too complicated for me !!

Tomorrow I plan to have another early start, get on the treadmill and do my chores in the morning. In the afternoon I am going to visit my sister and take some easter treats for her grandchildren:-)  I hope you all have a great weekend  and be good !!

Progress as of today: 27 lbs lost so far, only 50 lbs to go!

carlyfatty on 04/16/2011:
I too plan to start my fitness early 2moro! Im also going to try to get all my chores rite out of the way in the morning! I know its a sunday but as im on maternity leave all the days feel the same to me! Good luck 4 2moro! I dont think I would understand all that stuff either its very complicated. Poor you :-) keep us updated x

carlyfatty on 04/16/2011:
Oh and congrats on the 2lb loss. Feels so great doesnt it! We're at a similar weight (not sure about your height im 5ft 6 and a half) and im starting to find now that I can feel the slightest difference in my body with every few pounds I lose now. X

biscottibody59 on 04/17/2011:
Congrats on another 2# down:-) Great progress!

I'd suggest sweet potatoes (some people call them yams here, but what I get in the store isn't a yam). They're easy to microwave.

Also, think about jumping right in with some wt trng--muscle mass helps regulate blood sugar from what I understand. Maybe you're already doing this. I don't know if you can access it from where you are, but there's weekly show here called dLife (dedicated to diabetes--both types) and the website is dlife.com--it is a wealth of information if you can access it.

Have a good evening!

moogy on 04/17/2011:
Sounds like you will need to do a bit more reading. My daughter is diabetic and it is true that if a food contains fat it slows down the absorption of the sugar. Weird but true. She is just happy that chocolate is only 50 on the GI index!!!!! Just stick with eating healthy and balanced meals and low gi snacks in between and you will be find. A GI index book will be essential. Good going with all that walking, and talking at the same time, excellent work!!

biscottibody59 on 04/18/2011:
I hope you can access the videos from the website (dLife.com). I'll look up the specific one I'm thinking of and get back to you. It's been awhile ago, but the guy who started the wt trng and kept up with it, really had a turnaround in blood sugar control as I remember.

mcwoo40 on 04/18/2011:
Look at you with your weightloss :)Bought Harry Potter for hubby for easter(he's had too much chocci!!)Can't believe i have easter eggs in the wardrobe and i have'nt been tempted to eat them.Bought them with mugs so if i did pinch them all, which i have done in the past and had to replace them, they will be wondering where all the new mugs had come from, and my secret will be out, looking forward to the time off at easter :)Jules

sweetpea1977 on 04/18/2011:
Congrats on the 2 lbs gone. Looks like you are doing great with both food and exercise!

I've always been confused by the GI system. Hopefully the dietitian will spell it out for you so that you can gain a better understanding of it. :)

Sounds like a good plan to talk to the dietician. :-)

Weight: 202.0

Hey everyone, I have stopped feeling sorry for myself and found that I actually feel pretty good at the moment. I weigh less than I did a few weeks ago, I am sleeping better too and I have an opportunity to help myself to better health in general.

I had an interesting day at work which is always a good thing as it stops me thinking about food !! this morning I took part in a course on Cultural Awareness. At the University where I work we have about 30,000 students of which over 9000 are students from overseas (from about 150 different countries). We also have some 1600 staff members from different countries too.  The course I went to was to help library staff not to offend people from different cultures inadvertantly.  It was really interesting and made me think  more about how I deal with people at the reception desk.  In the afternoon I spent an hour shadowing the electronic resources team. This is the team that provide our students and academics with access to journals and databases online, and it's something that has fascinated me for a while. I know I can be such a nerd at times

I ate well all day and did another 30mins on the treadmill. Today I managed a mile and a half in 28 mins 30 secs and felt pretty good at the end of it. If I do that 5 times a week thats seven and a half miles more walking than I have done in a long time

Progress as of today: 25 lbs lost so far, only 52 lbs to go!

hollybelle on 04/14/2011:
Glad you feel better. I relate to the feeling sorry for myself part! Great workout on the treadmill! Keep it up!

Though I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis, you have a plan in place and your head is really in the game. Good going with the exercise--it's only going to get better for you I'm sure!

So glad you had such a great day too! xo

I related to your comments on my page about the adults. Although we REALLY LIKE the bf - he's ALWAYS THERE, too. He's quite nice, but whew! Kind of ready to have some time ALONE with husband again. biscottibody59 on 04/16/2011:
Thanks for your comments--it's hard when you're in the throes of chaos to think you're going to make it out the other side! It makes me feel better to know you did! (This subject doesn't get a lot of discussion around here:-) Have a good weekend!

Hey everyone, I'm a little bit down again this evening. I phoned my doctors for the results of my glucose tolerance test and unfortunately I have impaired glucose tolerance (AKA pre-diabetes).  Of course this could be worse, I could have gone straight to full-blown diabetes !  I now have more appointments at my doctors surgery. I have to see our practice nurse on Friday morning, and I have to see the dietician in the first week in May. Apparently the dietician only visits the surgery once a month and I've just missed this month's visit. I suppose this is the real wake-up call I have stupidly been waiting for. This time I really need to lose weight to improve my health and to stop it getting much worse.

On a brighter note I have started using my old treadmill and I have really enjoyed it. Tonight when I got in from work my husband had it all set up ready for me and I did one and a half miles in thirty minutes. I used to be able to do two miles in thirty minutes but believe me I will be doing it again soon. Watch this space :-)

Hiya Greeny,At least you are doing something about it before it could get worse. That's why i am really trying harder this time as there is diabetes in the family. My nan had it but was treated just by diet, and my older brother has it and has injections its scary aint it and that could be me a few years down the line.I have been watching some old supersized superkinny programmes, they are an eye opener too. You've got your hubby well trained!!!,that's all i am doing just building myself up to a speed that i feel comfy at.Your doing brill so stick at it,Jules

I know you will do what you can to get to a healthier weight. You've done it before. Didn't you get down to about 164 or so? Good on the treadmill, too. :-D

Sorry about the diagnosis. Life always seems to be throwing things at us, huh?! Have a wonderful day today ;)

Sounds like time to get serious. Good news about the treadmill though. Good for you. The more you do the stronger you will get and your stamina will increase so you go girl!!

hollybelle on 04/13/2011:
Ah, Anne, don't be so hard on yourself-just get going and start doing what you know you need to do. You have already started-using the treadmill and eating better. You can get that glucose reading down. Keep up the good work and give up the negative thoughts about the past - only the future ahead and it can be bright.

At least you know that you NEED to be healthy now!

Good work on the treadmill!

it's been another glorious day here in Manchester, UK today so another day spent for the most part in the garden. There's a lot of tidying up needing to be done but it was too nice a day to be spent working. When I am back at work tomorrow hubby might start to tidy up properly, although the weather forecast predicts light rain. I have taken some photos of the dogs today so I will upload a couple for you to see :-)  By the way I finally managed to get back on a treadmill today. My son brought back my old treadmill because the motor has blown in my newer one, and currently the company who made it have no replacement motors in stock !!

Here are the photos of the dogs. The black one is Jasper and the white one is Kali :-)
