Well the test seemed to go OK but I have to see my own doctor for the results next week. i was quite pleased because my starting fasting  blood sugar level was only very slightly raised above the level they expect. They gave me the finger prick test first then took proper blood samples, then I had to drink the vilest tasting drink I've ever had. It was sweet but powdery and the nurse had mixed it with  warm water so it was tepid Yuk !! Also it left an aftertaste on my tongue. After that I had to sit in the general waiting room for two hours. They wouldnt even let me have a stroll round the hospital grounds in case I cheated by eating or drinking ! Then I had to go back to have a second lot of blood taken.

In the afternoon I went to meet my daughter off her train. She's home until the end of April now and then back to Uni for her exams. She then finishes her second year at the end of May, and goes back for her third year in September.

It has been a gloriously sunny day today. Apart from shopping I have spent the biggest part of the day sitting out in my little garden watching the washing blowing on the line and reading a historical romance novel. Bliss :-)

Progress as of today: 25 lbs lost so far, only 52 lbs to go!

Nice to know they trusted you. I could understand if you were a young girl (you know what I mean!) but for goodness sake!!!! I bet you are glad to have your daughter home for a couple of weeks. Your day does sounds like a little bit of heaven on earth. Perfect!

Hey people, hope you are all having a good week. I have been extremely good this week, keeping to all the foods that are good for low cholesterol. Tonight I had a baked potato with steamed mackerel. It's an oily fish which is good for your good cholesterol. I didn't eat meat or fish for ten years but my good cholesterol levels were too low and my doctor advised me to occasionally eat oily fish to help. I think it's probably the only think I have eaten this week that is not plant based.  I cannot eat anything tonight as I am now fasting for the glucose tolerance test I am having tomorrow morning. I have come upstairs for an early night to distract me from accidentally eating or drinking anything.

Tomorrow afternoon I will be meeting my daughter off the train when she comes home from Uni for the Easter vacation :-)  I really miss her when she's away. I'm away to bed then, hope you all enjoy the rest of your day

Progress as of today: 23 lbs lost so far, only 54 lbs to go!

Hey everyone. I'm feeling a bit more upbeat today. I got lots of flowers for Mother's Day here in the UK,   and some lovely cards. My eldest managed to call round to see me too which I wasn't expecting as he brought me a present and card a few days ago. Consequently I am much more cheerful . I have eaten a little bit more over the weekend than I normally do during the week but none of it has been unhealthy so I don't think I have done any damage to my progress. I am hoping that the few pounds I have lost and the cholesterol lowering diet I have been sticking to will help my overall health when I go to the hospital next Friday. No point stressing about it in advance, it will only make things worse.  I have been sorting through my wardrobe today and a few things that had been getting tight are starting to feel more comfortable. That's always a good sign :-)  Hope you have all had a good weekend. I'll catch up again tomorrow

Hello everyone

It's been a bit miserable here weather-wise which has made me feel a bit down too. I wasn't in work today, I booked a days hols so I could fit in an appointment at the hairdressers. My hair was getting to a silly length, too long to be tidy but too short to be able to tie it back. Now it's back to short and tidy :-) I'm feeling a bit restless and I think it's because I have the glucose tolerance test hanging over me, like the sword of Damocles. I take it next Friday morning. I will be relieved to find out where I stand, even if the news is bad.  I have dropped another couple of pounds this week and I am sleeping better than I have been for a while. I think this is because I am going to bed without a full stomach every night.

It is Mother's Day on Sunday here in the UK. I have already had a couple of early presents from my loving offspring. My eldest son brought flowers from him and his wife. My daughter-in-law will be working on Sunday (she's a mental health nurse in a hospital) so they were bringing their presents round early in case they didn't have time on Sunday. My daughter at University sent me chocolates and a card through the post. I havent told her that I have been having blood glucose problems, and have cut the sweet stuff out of my diet. I didn't like to worry her uneccessarily.  Hubby will have to eat the chocs for me before she comes home next weekend. I'm sure he'll be able to manage that !! I'm also getting a book for Mother's Day but it wasn't released until today so we are exepcting it any time soon from Amazon. Hubby has bought it on behalf of my second son who is flat broke !!!  I would rather just see the kids on Sunday than have any presents at all but that probably wont happen :-(

Enjoy your weekend ladies !

i've been a good girl today and sticking with my eating plan, but I nearly gave in to some comfort eating because I hate work at times, and today was one of those times. Grumpy bosses, grumpy students and colleagues under my feet all the time. I felt restless and awkward somehow.  I've booked Friday off as a days holiday to give myself a long weekend so I hope the weather improves. Today it was raining after quite a prolonged dry spell which was disappointing :-(  Perhaps that is what had everyone on edge ?  Anyway I hope you fellow DDers are all having a good week and keep up the good work

Had a good day today eating all the good stuff :-)  I didn't want to get up this morning. I normally get up at about 6am but because the clocks went forward an hour yesterday I really felt as if I was getting up at five o'clock !! To make matters worse it was a bit of a grim morning weatherwise with a cold mist creeping around. On the bus to work I could feel the cold seeping in every time the driver opened the door to let someone on. It brightened up later thank goodness :-) I am going to ask my hubby to find my old step out of the garden shed and start the day with a bit of stepping  to music. Will have to be careful though not to put too much pressure on my arthritic knee.  Hope you all are having a great day

Hey folks, I've had a good weekend as regards food, sticking to the plant-based (almost!) diet. The weather has been nice too, for early spring. Our clocks were put forward an hour last night for the start of British Summer Time which means we lost an hour during the night. I had a bit of an early night to try and compensate. Today I had a walk to my sister's bungalow and we sat in her back garden in the sun, drinking tea and doing the crosswords in the newspapers. Really laid back :-)  In an hour or so I will start doing my ironing. I've set my board up in my daughter's bedroom where I can iron in peace whilst watching DVDs. Tonight I think I will watch some old CSI Miami :-) It makes the time go quicker. Next weekend said daughter  will be back from Uni for the Easter vacation period so I will have to move all the ironong stuff out of her room for the duration !!!  Enjoy what's left of your weekend and I will talk again soon :-)

Progress as of today: 21 lbs lost so far, only 56 lbs to go!

moogy on 03/27/2011:
Our clocks go forward an hour next Sunday for our Australian Winter Time, back to real time and an extra hour in bed! Yay! Your afternoon at your sister's sounds really nice. I remember how unusual it was to see bungalows in England as a child whereas here it is rare to see a double story house let alone a semi detached. I hope you have a good healthy week greengirl:)

biscottibody59 on 03/27/2011:
Sounds like a good way to spend a Sunday! Our time switched a couple weeks ago and it's better, but I'm not quite there with being used to it.

I used to watch "Are You Being Served?" when I ironed on Sunday nights:-)

Have a good week!

Hey everyone, hope you are all getting that Friday feeling and winding down at the end of the week :-)

Since I last posted I have had some good news and some bad news. the good news is that the company who made my treadmill can provide me with a new motor for it for a price ! They say it will cost £56 to replace. I believe that comes to about  $90 in US currency. That is if we fit it ourselves, which my hubby is prepared to do. I am going to order it on Monday so I should be up and running again soon YAY !!

The not so good news comcerns some blood tests I had a couple of weeks ago. They were repeat fasting tests for blood glucose. Usually , if there is a problem with blood tests you get a letter from the docs surgery within a few days. No letter, no problem. Well I didn't receive a letter so I thought I was good, but my daughter-in-law who is a nurse told me to phone the surgery to check. I phoned on Wednesday evening and a receptionist told me the results were fine. I was thrilled. Today when I got home there was a letter telling me I had a hospital appt for glucose tolerance tests. I was confused so I phoned my docs again only to be told that my blood test results had been too high for the last two lots of fasting bloods I'd had so I have to have further tests. I am annoyed that i was given the wrong onfo on Wednesday and now I'm disappointed that it's come to this.

I'm not going to let it bother me though, until I have the results of the glucose tolerance tests. Tomorrow I am going to work for four hours to help cover for colleagues who are on holiday so that might take my mind off it. It's years since I went to work on a Saturday :-)

Progress as of today: 21 lbs lost so far, only 56 lbs to go!

moogy on 03/25/2011:
Well it really is better to know what is going on with your bloods. That way you can take action if neccessary. I hope that your results are not so bad. I think I was a teenager last time I had to due a Saturday shift. I am glad you can get a replacement motor and that hubby is able to install it:) I see that you have lost two pounds since you last posted, did you think we wouldn't notice. Congratulations, that's terrific! Well done:)

biscottibody59 on 03/26/2011:
Best of luck for the testing.

I had a glucose tolerance test once. Horrible experience. I wonder if you have had a hemoglobin A1C--I think that's the gold standard for diabetes diagnosis here in the US.

At any rate, sounds like good news for your treadmill motor--have a good weekend!

mcwoo40 on 03/26/2011:
Hiya Greeny, just passing to say i am going to join you monday in doing this weightloss malarkey :/Have a good weekend, speak soon :)Jules

This link was on the forum page link (below): http://www.diabetes.org.uk/en/Guide-to-diabetes/Monitoring/Blood_Glucose/Glycated_haemoglobin_HbA1c_and_fructosamine/

http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/

Here's another site I found that might be of interest: http://www.labtestsonline.org.uk/understanding/analytes/a1c/test.html

We can get the A1C test (not sure how reliable they are to use on one's own) or inexpensive blood glucose meters over-the-counter here in the US. I've never used them. (I don't have diabetes in my family, but I get a fasting glucose at my dr's office about least once a year now.)

Anyway. It's worth looking into if you can avoid the GTT--glucose tol test.

biscottibody59 on 03/26/2011:
I looked this up on wikipedia too, in case you're interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose_tolerance_test

Good evening everyone, hope you are all having a successful day. Since my fall from grace on Saturday I have been  really good, sticking to a cross between the advice given to me by my doctor's surgery in order to lower cholesterol and the tougher regime advocated by Caldwell Esselstyn.  At the moment I am being strong and sticking to it quite rigidly but it will be harder when my daughter comes home from her university for the Easter vacation. I will need all the support  I can get then !!!  I don't usually give my daily menu but I will tell you what I have eaten today so you can see the sort of stuff  I'm eating. By the way I am not counting calories at all !!

Breakfast   2 small wholemeal toast with 1/2 can low salt/low sugar baked beans in tomato sauce. Some days I have porridge instead made with half water/half light soy milk and adding a small banana sliced

Packed lunch at work  2 small wholemeal slices of bread with quorn slices as filling (vegetarian substitute for meat, made from mycoprotein ie mushrooms)

1 pear and 1 apple

Evening meal Risotto made with organic brown rice, onion, tinned tomatoes, celery and soya mince , seasoned with black pepper and dried ginger. I use a vegetarian stock to cook it in.  It depends what I have in the fridge but sometimes I might put bell peppers in it or mixed beans

This is a typical weekday menu. At weekend when I have more time to cook I usually have a more traditional dinner with several different vegs, and meat substitute like quorn fillets (pretend chicken fillets, very low fat)

The only real breakaway from the plant-based eating is that I will have a few cups of tea every day with skimmed cows milk

Progress as of today: 19 lbs lost so far, only 58 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 03/23/2011:
Your menu sounds great. I like the Quorn products. My boys were asking for chicken nuggets and the packaged ones are just so horrible and I don't have time to make homemade for them to take to preschool. So I've been giving them Quorn nuggets for weeks now and they love them, don't know the difference!

moogy on 03/23/2011:
Very impressive!! This diet has to help your health, I am sending lots of good thoughts and hope you can maintain your regime.:)

greengirl - Monday Mar 21, 2011

Well all my good intentions went to pot on the very first day. An impromptu day trip with my son and daughter-in-law saw me going on a surprise visit to my youngest daughter at University. This led to us all sharing an evening meal in a pub where nothing on the menu was low fat or fully plant-based !! I opted for a vegetarian broccoli and potato bake but it was cooked in such a rich cheese sauce that I dread to think of the amount of fat in it. All I can say in it's (and my own) defence is that it tasted heavenly.  Having put this behind me I am now moving onward and upward and I'm back on the straight and narrow :-)

My daughter is at University in a small town in Wales called Bangor. It is just across the Menai Straits from Anglesey which is a fascinating place. It is a welsh island with many ancient monuments and standing stones, and is the last true bastion of the druid religion in the UK. i will post a photograph of my daughter with Anglesey in the background.

I took this at dusk on Saturday. Unfortunately the tide was out or the whole of the space behind her would have been filled with water as far as the island in the background. As it is there was only a very narrow channel of water to be seen. It was the lowest tide for several years because of  the special position of the full moon on Saturday. Exposed mudflats don't really show it off to the best advantage. It's really quite a beautiful area of the UK.

Progress as of today: 19 lbs lost so far, only 58 lbs to go!

moogy on 03/21/2011:
Ooops an unexpected activity is really hard when it comes to food choices. I say just enjoy the company and do the best you can. I am glad you had such a lovely time and enjoyed the food. My parent had a permanent caravan at Aberystwyth when I was a child and when went several times a year. I loved it, exploring the rock pools when the tide was out, climbing the hills behind the site. Good memories, I love Wales.

Umpqua on 03/21/2011:
That location is just stunning! I'm sure it's filled with all sorts of fun sites to visit. I don't think you did too bad with your choice at the pub, you made a decent decision given your options. And now you can focus on going fully plant-based when you're at home and can control your foods. Even if you don't do it 100 percent of the time, it will still make a difference. I hope you have a great week!

biscottibody59 on 03/23/2011:
A great picture at a unique time--cool! Sounds like a place with a wealth of history and endless fascination--thanks for this!

Hope you're doing well today!
