Well I've decided to try plant- based diet with the regular exception of skimmed cows milk in beverages. I'm avoiding all oils too even vegetable oils.  I'm sure I'll have the occasional excursion into forbidden territory but I'll do the best I can. I'm not calorie counting but obviously I'll already be avoiding the worst offenders calorie-wise by sticking to the plant-based. I promise to give it my best shot :-). Watch this space.............

Progress as of today: 19 lbs lost so far, only 58 lbs to go!

You're off to a good start!

I will be watching and grabbing inspiration too! Have a good weekend--there's a little left!

Donkey on 03/19/2011:
I think that's a good idea. I would do that if I didn't live with such a carnivore.

hey folks, thanks for the comments and suggestions. I think I could easily stick to the non-meat aspect of the heart-attack proof diet, as I was vegetarian for ten years before starting to eat fish again. However the thing I find it hard to come to terms with is not using cows milk in my hot drinks. I have used soy milk (light) for years on my cereals but I have never been able to tolerate it in tea!! This weekend I am going to stock up on acceptable goodies and try to follow the plant based diet as close as possible but I will still be taking skimmed milk in my tea. I am coming to terms with the brown rice I have in my cupboard but I will be looking for a short grained one in the local health food shop asap. My supermarket only stocks the long grained :-(

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 60 lbs to go!

sweetpea1977 on 03/18/2011:
I think your plan sounds great. Only using skimmed milk for your tea seems acceptable to me.

Good luck finding the short grained rice!

biscottibody59 on 03/18/2011:
I hope you find that the short-grain is a little more appetizing. I've also heard of brown jasmine rice but have never eaten it.

So you already have the edge in changing your eating ways--excellent!

I know the book is hardcore, but if the changes you can tolerate get your cholesterol down then that would be wonderful!

i've been eating a lot healthier for the last few days but having started reading the book that biscottibody has been advocating about preventing heart disease by diet alone, I'm contemplating at least trying a must stricter regime. I don't know if I could stick to it  permanently but it's definately given me something to think about. Has anyone else tried it seriously , and if so , any ideas for packed lunches for taking to work??

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 60 lbs to go!

moogy on 03/16/2011:
She has given me plenty to think about as well, I haven't tried the heart disease 'diet'. I think a couple of people have given it a try. I eat lunch at home but you could try the ideas here http://www.taste.com.au/search-recipes/?q=lunch+boxes&publication= Good luck!!

Umpqua on 03/16/2011:
I've read the Esselstyn book and while I'm not following his diet, I've done well with cutting back on animal proteins and upping my plants and whole grains. I feel like even cutting out some animal proteins will help in the long run. As far as packed lunches, I do a lot of wraps. I do Joseph's Flax Seed Lavash Wraps since they are low carb as well. You could fill them up with veggies and beans or hummus. Good luck to you!

biscottibody59 on 03/16/2011:
I'm sorry you couldn't see "Chow Down"--I'll see if maybe somehow it's accessible elsewhere. Otherwise there are some lectures by Esselstyn and the others mentioned that you may be able to access on youtube for instance.

I did do the completely plant-based, no added fat thing for about 4 days early on after reading the book. I felt good. I do believe it's possible to lose the attraction to fat as it says in the book.

I think with a little imagination you can come up with something to suit you. It depends on what you have available grocery wise. For instance corn tortillas (very common around here) and some kind of beans or homemade no tahini hummus would be perfect. Then a container of some kind of cooked veggies or a salad. I've really grown to love brussels sprouts--I get frozen ones.

Or you could just do leftovers of whatever you have at home.

I think whatever you do--the key is to not feel deprived--as with any other diet change.

Hello, Greengirl...good to see you back on DD. :-D

Hey folks, thanks to old friends who called by my diary to say hello :-) and to new friends too.  I've had a good day today apart from the treadmill people haven't got back to me yet about the burnt out motor. I can't really afford to replace the treadmill altogether but if the price is reasonable to repair it I will do that.  I am eating well, plenty of vegetables and wholemeal food rather than white processed !!  I'm finding it tough to make the change to brown rice, from white or arborio.  It takes longer to cook and is still too "chewy" for me to enjoy. I've changed to porridge oats for breakfast instead of more processed cereals but will have to wait for the results of my blood tests to see if I have benefitted from the change of diet.

i wish my job wasn't so stressful at the moment but with the way things are and the jobs situation in the UK at present, I dont want to rock the boat at work. At least I've still got a job and whilst I've still got a daughter at university to maintain I want to keep my job as long as possible !!!

I'll keep it short and sweet today and wish you all a good night :-)

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 60 lbs to go!

moogy on 03/14/2011:
I love porridge but have never been able to come to terms with brown rice. Glad to see that you are eating lots of vegies, they are my go to food. I hope you manage to find a way to deal with the stress at work, it is all a matter of perception you know? If we look at things in a different way sometimes it changes our responses to the situation. Good luck.

hollybelle on 03/14/2011:
Greenie! So good to "see" you on here again! Zumba is Latin dance aerobics more or less. You can google it. I'm very surprised you don't have some classes nearby. Here they hold them in schools, churches etc. I'll catch up on Your posts and write more later. My d is in universit now, too. How much longer does your have to go?

biscottibody59 on 03/14/2011:
I have completely abandoned long-grain brown rice--I just never could get the right kind or something. So I found some short-grain that a store nearby finally carries consistently, though it is pricey. It makes all the difference to me. I buy several bags and keep them in the freezer to keep them longer. Also you may seek out some ground flax seed--that can aid in lowering cholesterol.

Glad you got something out of the other diary--the book includes quite a few recipes as well. The movie "Chow Down" mentioned in the first entry is worth watching if you get the chance. It has commercials placed every so often, but it's free:-)

legcramps on 03/15/2011:
I like to add things to my brown rice. Maybe it covers the flavor or texture; mostly veggies. Haha, sometimes ketchup.

sweetpea1977 on 03/15/2011:
Good job on the food changes. It took me a while to get used to brown rice, but I eventually got used to it. Now I prefer it over white rice (unless its Chinese fried rice, lol). Im sure you see some lower cholesterol numbers from the higher fiber changes you have been able to accept. Just cut back on the white rice and enjoy it as a treat every now and then. :)

I hope you are able to get your treadmill fixed!

Unfortunately  my first day back on here didn't go so well.  I have been using my treadmill (gently) for the last couple of weeks but just when I decide to get serious about exercise the motor decides to overheat and burn out. Annoyingly it's only a month out of it's warranty !! Just my luck !  I have had my poor husband taking all the rubbish out of his garden shed to reach my old gravity strider from where it was stashed right at the back of everything LOL.  Poor hubby! while he was in there he decided to get the power washer out to clean  the patio paving of moss. Can you believe it, it was broken too !?! They say things come in threes so I'm just waiting for something else to break down now.

I ate healthily today. I'm not counting calories but I'm following guidelines for lowering my high cholesterol and high blood glucose, both of which i am struggling with at the moment. The upshot of that is that my calorie levels are very reasonable and likely to result in some weight loss. I just want to feel well, which is something that's not been happening lately. Will let you know if I lose weight. I think I will weigh myself once a week and make Saturday my weighing in day :-)

I did 20 minutes on the gravity glider today but tomorrow I intend to go for a long walk, weather permitting. I don't usually enjoy walking in the street but it's far too muddy in the river valley to make walking at anything more than a stroll a viable option.

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 60 lbs to go!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 03/12/2011:
welcome back greeny! i took a break too, partially because i didn't have a computer for several months. then last month, i finally purchased one and i've been making more regular entries.

we all take breaks, our lives get busier, we don't want to always be at the computer. the important thing is to do what you need for yourself. then, do the extras. i find myself coming on here most days, just to write for myself - to be accountable to myself. i'd like to comment more on everyone else's entries but that usually means going to bed even later...which is not always a good idea to do. so, what i'm rambling about is: take your own health and happiness in regard first. and do the rest later!

welcome back to you!

moogy on 03/12/2011:
Hello, We haven't met before, welcome back. Good for you for not letting things get in the way of your determination (even if it was your husband who did the heavy lifting!). Where about's in England do you live, I was born in Birmingham and emigrated to Australia when I was 12.

Runforfun on 03/12/2011:
It seems like everything always breaks at the same time! Awesome job on staying on track with eating healthy!

biscottibody59 on 03/13/2011:
Good going on the food choices! Hope you can get your treadmill fixed, but having the glider is a good back-up. You've got good incentives to keep going!

My cholesterol/triglycerides were high last November, but more importantly I didn't feel good. I stumbled upon a book, 'Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease' by Caldwell Esselstyn and then I started a separate diary on here, ModerationKills (http://www.dietdiaries.com/blogs.cfm?theNickname=ModerationKills) in case you're interested--it only has a few entries. Seems like every one of us at some time will have to lower cholesterol.

I guess at the time I was shooting in the dark for something. I had gotten to the point where I couldn't exercise much without getting wigged out (I was diagnosed with some heart arrhythmias and had a bunch of tests back in late '09 and early '10). The big thing is that I found out I had sleep apnea. I'll spare you the long story:-)

I write this not to toot about myself. I just want you to know that you can do this!

At any rate, since you mentioned lowering cholesterol I thought I'd let you know about the other diary.

Have a good evening!

moogy on 03/13/2011:
I am glad your results were good. Yes we would have lived close to each other sort of!! I have watched Coronation Street since I was a child and we get it here as well. My evenings are started off with Corrie and Eastenders, love it!! I am glad that you are good to go with gentle exercise now that your tests are all negative. Glad to have you here!!

sweetpea1977 on 03/14/2011:
Greeny!! Im so glad to see you posting again! Im also happy that you are improving your lifestyle to improve your health. Test results always become great motivators for health improvement.

Wow I've been away so long but I think I'm back for good this time. I've had a few health scares recently and I need to get myself fit and active once again. I'd like to say hello to any old friends who are still out there. It's nice to still  recognise names in the recent diary entries. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since i was last here and I hope to catch up with you all soon

biscottibody59 on 03/11/2011:
Greenie--you're back--do stay awhile!

Thanks for your comments, if I can inspire you or anyone, I'm glad.

My current entry is very deceiving. Although it looks like I'm at 100%, I'm really not. If you had been here from about Apr-Nov of last year, you would not have been impressed. I was going through some health challenges myself. I kept trying to do what I usually do with staying active, but I felt like I was spinning my wheels and wondered if it was time to ask, "Is this as good as it gets?"

I wish you all the best getting back in the swing of things. You're here, so I know I can at least cheer you on:-)

Hey y'all. Hope you are all having a good day. I have had a pretty good one. I 've eaten just over 1400 cals - made myself a tasty mushroom risotto for my evening meal after work so I am still feeling satisfied now (it's 11pm here).

My daughter is preparing to go back to her university at the weekend so I have booked a days holiday for tomorrow so we can have a girlie day out together in town. We are going to do all the touristy stuff we wouldn't normally bother with, ie local art gallery, local museum and a trip on the big wheel that is in the city centre. If I remember I will take my camera and post any decent photos I take. I work near the city centre , so I travel into town 5  days a wek, and to be honest I don't really see it anymore !! Sometimes you have to open your eyes and actually take notice of things, so that is what we are doing tomorrow :-)

Also I will make the effort to find healthy food options whilst we are out and about !!!

Progress as of today: 33.5 lbs lost so far, only 43.5 lbs to go!

sweetpea1977 on 04/07/2010:
mmm...mushroom risotto sounds so delicious!!!

Your girlie day sounds like lots of fun! Enjoy the sites and take tons of photos. Be sure to get a few of you and your daughter together as well. :) Oh, and you can always take some healthy non-refrigerated snacks with you. My favorite is homemade trail mix made of equal parts of unsalted (and raw, if possible) cashews, almonds, and raisins (I use 1/8 cup of each for a single serving) and fresh apples. I also take my own water to stay properly hydrated. Anyway, enjoy your time with your daughter!

Umpqua on 04/08/2010:

Thank you to everyone for your support :-)  I am feeling very motivated at the moment, and I have just booked a mini break away with a friend, for mid-June, which has given me a little added incentive. It is eleven weeks away and I am going to do my best to get as close as I can to 180lbs by then.

I have managed to spend some time on my treadmill on four out of the last five days, but may not get on it again until the end of the week. I have really enjoyed it, too. I find that after about 35-40 minutes I get my second wind and feel as if I could go on for ever. I do restrain myself though for the sake of my arthritic knees !!

I have been very restrained with my eating over the Easter weekend , having tasted chocolate only once !! It was hardest on Sunday when I spent time with my sister and her family. There was lots of temptation - cakes and biscuits galore, but apart from a few choclate crumbs I kept faith with myself !! Yay for me. I will leave you with one of my favourite pictures from the day ! It is of my two great-nieces Amelia, and Yasmine on a mini-easter egg hunt in the garden !!

Progress as of today: 33.5 lbs lost so far, only 43.5 lbs to go!

sweetpea1977 on 04/05/2010:
I have a couple of trips coming up soon (end of April and end of May), which has kept me motivated. Not sure of how much I can lose by the end of month but Im hopeful for 169-170 by end of May.

Anyway, sounds like you did pretty well yesterday. Good job greenie!

Love the photo. Its so colorful and your grand-nieces are adorable! Oh, you asked about my family. We're all doing great. My son turned 27 months old yesterday. Unbelievable!!

hollybelle on 04/06/2010:
Good for you resisting chocolate. Chocolate is a great treat, but it really serves no nutritional purpose. How did that sound? Convincing? Ha! Keep up the good work. Love that you are taking a get away with a friend - good incentive! Cute pics such cute pink sweaters!
