Hello everyone,

I bet you folks who know me had thought that I had disappeared again. However that is not the case :)   The past few weeks I have been busy  during the day with training and stuff for my new position at work, and I have been so tired at night that I have barely had the energy to go on the internet. Also I have had a little trip away with a pal, to Banbury (anyone heard the old nursery rhyme "Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross?? Well I've been there!) and also a day in Oxford going round the various college of the University.

Anyway tonight I have summoned up the energy to catch myself up on here. The really good news is that although I havent been formally 'dieting' as such I have managed to lose five pounds just by cutting back on sweet stuff for the past few weeks. The not so good news is that last week , whilst discussing the results of my most recent xray on my arthritic knee, my doctor has told me that I can expect to need a knee replacement within five years UNLESS I manage to lose enough weight to make a difference to the pressure I am currently putting on it.  As you can imagine this has been a bit of a wakeup call for me. I gave myself four days to organise myself, and from tomorrow I am seriously getting back into the swing of things and starting to write everything down again and counting calories. I know that is the only thing that works for me personally.

I'll finish now, as it is almost 11pm here and my bed is calling me. I will however just add a couple of photos I took in Oxford of the quads of a couple of the colleges there. The first one will be Worcester College, and the second will be St Johns College :) Have a good week folks :)

Ive just added one of me beside the canal in Oxford. Of course I have my eyes closed !! Ooooh I'll just add another of me inside St Johns College Chapel too. It is quite a lovely place.

Was so excited when I saw your post. Anne, I have gained lots of weight, too. I am highly motivated. I haven't been formally dieting either - but I haven't lost any weight. Sorry to hear about your knee, but you said it - a wakeup call! Me, too. I just don't want to be old and carrying around this extra 20 or so pounds! I am exercising, but the lbs are not budging. I have been doing OK on food and exercise for 3 weeks. But, I need to get more sincere about it. Plan to get going on that score starting today. I hate not keeping promises to myself - so you know I'm serious.

I am wondering if I am getting to the point with my back where you are with your knee. Believe it or not, your doctor is right. My former Exercise Buddy was a double knee replacement. The physical therapist said that she would be a repeat customer if she did not lose the weight. Believe me, she lost it! (I believe she was in a LOT of pain from the surgery when she was told this.) Keep working at it!

Hello everyone,

Its lovely to see some have my old friends have called by

I am making a valiant effort at cutting back on the sweet stuff. I have slipped up once or twice, but I have kept strong more often than not. I have been under a lot of strain at work this week. Not only has our staffing structure been changed, but our whole ground floor is being refurbished ( at the cost of more than a million pounds) so this week we have been watching the destruction of our old working area, at the same time as our old teams have been splitting up. It has been unsettling and upsetting. However I have refrained from comfort eating at work.

My own job has changed, and I am now part of a newly formed reception and information team. I will be answering student queries at our new welcome desk (once it is built) and it will be much easier on my knees than some of the other jobs I have carried out in the library.

Things are changing at home too. My youngest child, my daughter, is preparing to spread her wings. She is moving away in September to go to University. Conversely my middle child, a son, is returning home after sharing a house with friends for the last eighteen months. It worked out too expensive for him to afford. I am hoping all this will keep my mind away from thinking of food  Lol !

I am pressed for time during the week, but as so few of us are posting at the moment I hope to catch up with everyone at weekend.. Stay strong everyone :)

Hiya Anne,I keep telling myself that i am not buying anymore 'goodies' but then the girls invite their mates round for tea like tonight and there's chocolate swiss roll and choc ices in the freezer.I'm trying my best,want to impress the doc when i go next and show her i can do it.I've bought loads of salad stuffs so i hope the weather stays like this i don't mind eating it when the suns out, strange are'nt i!!!Take care Anne,hope the joints are better in this warm weather,Julie

Oh, I'm so glad you like the new job better. I know for some reason my job situation always affects my eating habits. I guess stree of any kind can, for that matter. Sounds like the library is/will be beautiful. Regarding the kids - my daughter (only child) just graduated from High School in May. Looks like she will defer on college for this year coming up her choice. She has a good job she loves (for now) and her Dad and I are resigned to the fact that she must make up her own mind.

Hang in there. I have doctor appointment in a couple of months and I want the scale to register downward. So I feel pretty motivated! God bless.....Holly

Hi everyone. I hope you are all having a good day. I am making a good start in my efforts at healthy eating, by firstly cutting out the sweet stuff (that had crept in until I was eating some every day).  Luckily for me the tuckshop in the staffroom at work is closed at the moment, so that will be a big help !!  Just have to work on my hubby, so he stops buying it for me too. I will eat more fruit to give me the sweet taste  that I will be craving, no doubt.

I think that I have picked an ideal time to start this effort. A lot of my comrades at work are off for the whole of the summer until mid September. They work during term time only but I work all year round. I am hoping that by the time they come back in 13 weeks or so, I will have lost enough weight for it to be noticeable to them. Also, whilst most of my buddies are off work there are less temptations, such as lunch in the local pub !!!

Whilst my knees are feeling OK I will be resuming my early morning walk with the dogs. Unfortunately if my arthritis starts giving me a lot of pain I just can't manage the walks.  i was wondering if any of you , my fellow DD friends, have any suggestions as to what exercise would suit me at those times. Any suggestions will be gratefully received,

Whilst I am writing this it is teeming with rain outside. We have had some very unsettled weather here in the UK during the last few days and the small area of grass in my back garden is growing at a terrific rate. Until it is dry, I wont be able to get it cut. I think I will put a photo of the garden that I took a couple of weeks ago here with my posting. There are more flowers out now than there were then, and the grass is a bit greener now, but you will still get a feeling for it. It is small but we use it like an extra room during the summer months, mainly for relaxing and sometimes eating out there :)

But, if you can stand it, doing a few squats (no weights to start with and don't do a full squat) will strengthen your quadriceps muscles and possibly help your knees.

How about some pilates? Those are usually really good exercises and easy on the joints, but I would suggest you asked your doctor, they would know better whats best for you!

how about water walking... you wear a special jacket that keeps you up in the water.... we use it for some of our pupils who are afraid of water. its like walking in air great for our kids with dodgy joints, specially if the pool is warm. the weather up here in the north never quite makes it to summer although saying that the sun is shinning at the moment, but forcast says its got to thunder later.....good job ive got webbed feet! well done with your will power!

Hi folks,  long time , no post !

I'm afraid I have been awol for some while. I have had a truckload of medical problems to be dealing with. Wont bore you with all the gory details but its involved various scans, mri, xrays etc etc and waiting for what seemed like weeks on end for results (still waiting for some now).  As a result of this (as I'm sure you may have guessed :(   ) I have been comfort eating for months and have put on even more weight.

The good news is that apart from some osteoarthritis, and a severe case of pulsatile tinnitus I am getting back to my normal jovial self, and now more than ever (and especially for the sake of my poor knees) I need to lose the darn weight so here I go again.. I actually flirted with the idea of coming back calling myself "I_passed_this_way_before"  but decided in the end to face the music and return as ever, your obedient Greengirl  :)

Welcome back! Sorry to hear that you've been having health problems. I know that's hard. I pulled a tendon in my hip and have been struggling through physical therapy, and trying to still walk the dogs. Life's a challenge!

Glad to see you back me old matey,i thought you had gone for good this time.Sorry to hear about your ailments,i know how you feel about waiting for results as they say no news is good news.I have a couple of months before we head off to Llandudno with doggles in tow(i can feel the stress levels going up now even thinking about it).I would like to lose a couple of stone before i go.Since may 1st i have lost 19lbs,It was 24lbs but i've put some back.It's only this past week i have felt better after a really bad chest infection and it's a big chest!!!.Two courses of anti-biotics aswell which gave me the trotts.Anyway i hope you don't disappear again or else i will smack your bum!!!I'm back on Reductil which are helping,so i do have to watch how much fat i'm consuming or else more trotts!!!I'll be back soon Jules ***START TODAY***

Hiya. If you try the diet I posted, be aware that you can still have some cheeses. Lowfat cottage, ricotta, and mozzarella are OK, but counted as protein choices. I still have the occasional piece of cheese, or a little shredded cheese on a salad, etc, but those do have more saturated fat and salt, so use in small amounts only.

Also, if you find that you are feeling really hungry, my doc says to add a little more protein. A serving of protein is 3 to 6 ounces. Eat closer to the 6oz, if you feel like you need a bit more substance in your meals.

Hi everyone, weekend at last YAY !!!  We have had a mad week at work. I have been shattered every night. It is the first week of the spring semester and all the students have assignments to hand in. At our desk we can provide a binding service to smarten up the presentation of assignments so we get a lot of custom at this time.  I am getting just too old for this, but with the recession and everything it is unlikely that I will be able to give up work for some years

At last we have seen the last of all the goodies that we had in the house from Christmas and I can get down to some serious control in my eating behaviour. I have lost another pound since the last time I updated and from tomorrow I am actively going to count calories. I'm sure it will take me awhile to adjust to this again but I know it will result in better weight loss. I have been keeping up the amount of fruit and veggies and cutting down on sweet stuff, but I am eating some savoury food fairly unrestrained, and that's whats keeping the weight up. I might also list my food on sparkpeople so I can keep an eye on how much protein, carbs and fats I'm eating for the first few weeks. Will keep you abreast of any developments.

I have been taking the dogs for a walk at 7am every morning, despite rain, frost, snow or heavy winds. We walk for about 30 minutes, its all the time I can spare at that time of the day. I can't wait for the light mornings, the darkness can be a bit creepy even though there are lots of people about, on their way to work etc. I have honestly enjoyed the walking, and so have the dogs. If my hubby hasnt had them out in the afternoon, we have another short walk in the evenings.  At weekends we have a much longer walk, but if my husband comes with us we walk at a slower pace as he suffers from COPD and gets very breathless and exhausted. The weather is fairly awful at the moment, so I am likely to be on my own with the dogs tomorrow morning.

Hello friends at DD . Sorry I didnt update at weekend. I was sent home from work ill on Thursday and stayed off on Friday recuperating in bed (and surfing the net it must be said!) but I am almost back to normal now. There seem to be an inordinate amount of strange viruses doing the rounds this winter !!

Since I have been back on my feet I have been taking the dogs out for two long walks each day, even tho the weather here in England has taken a turn for the worse. By that I mean it is warmer, but unfortunately wetter too. I much prefer cold and dry

Together with my family, I have been ploughing my way through the last of the Christmas goodies, and when they are all gone there will be no more sweeties for me. I have also started to eat my five a day fruit and veggies and I have cut out all visits to the tuckshop at work. Even though I have still eaten a pile of xmas junk I managed to lose one pound last week. Not quite sure how I managed that, but it could be the extra exercise I had with the dogs. This week I have booked a few days off on holiday. The reason for this is because I work as part of a small team, and one of our girls is having a hysterectomy soon, and will be off work for a couple of months. During that time it is unlikely that I will be able to take any days off, so I am making hay while the sun shines (figuratively, not literally, as it is actually raining and not sunny!)

Hiya Anne,glad the power cuts did'nt effect you.The bp tabs that i am taking are Amlodopine 5mg (the 10mg made me feel really ill,kept burning up with them) also i am taking Doxazosin 4mg.Did you get bad headaches when your bp was high,i'm getting fed up with them now,hubby keeps telling me off for taking co-codamol.Enjoy your holiday this week,the weather a little crappy is'nt it.Are you doing anything special?Anyway keep at it,hopefully i will of lost some weight when i get weighed fingers crossed,catch up soon Julie

I definitely had a bad headache--nearly a sick headache for the first part of the day on Friday, which was the first day I only had the one cup of green tea. Then the headache was there Saturday, but very mild. Then it just faded to no headache at all. I sleep much longer than I did with multiple coffees or teas. All in all it hasn't been bad except for those two days. The other big change is that I'm not drinking milk, so I'm trying to supplement with calcium pills. I may add the milk back just to drink, though I'm not a milk drinker--only in coffee normally.

Hi everyone First day back at work and my first efforts in eating healthily. I'm not counting calories yet but I will be soon. I need a diary, and a good day at the shops to buy all my favourite healthy food. I've still got the post-Christmas feeling as if things aren't quite back to normal but nearly so.

At 7am I had the dogs out for a walk in the inch or so of snow that had fallen overnight, so I had some exercise. It was dark so I didnt go too far. The only people you see out and about at that time are early bird workers and other dog walkers. It is already dark when I get home from work too, but hubby had the dogs out in the late afternoon so I didnt have to go out again. I am glad as it is bitterly cold at the moment. As usual the heating for our building on campus was malfunctioning. The heating is not controlled from our building as it is a campus-wide system and it always takes about three days to kick in properly after the holidays. The university very generously let  us have a free cup of coffee to warm us !!! I am totally underwhelmed by their generosity !!

I have resisted the temptations of the tuck box at work and stayed with my healthy packed lunch.

Will catch up with you all soon :)

Hiya Anne is'nt it bloomin' freezin.We've not had snow yet but slippery ice, not good for walkin' in.Thought i would make a start in the healthy eating dept as i am seeing the dietician fri.There are still tempting foods around in the freezer inc hollands meat and potato pies so the non healthy eaters can have those tonight.I told them last night "when all the goodies have gone we are all going to healthy eat" you should of seen there faces.Keep warm and speak to you soon,Julie

You be careful out in that ice/snow with your dogs...... I slipped a couple times yesterday, but recovered before craching in the ditch... The fresh snow atop the ice helped it not be so slick... Sun will be melting some away today and as always, it will mean icey conditions come nightfall.... Hope to go walking a bit this evening again... Need to buy some of those shoe cleet slip on thingy's.... You seen them?

Hello to you all on this lovely New Years Day. This morning I weighed myself for the first time in weeks. I have been comfort eating for several weeks, because I was upset by the restructuring at work, and then came Christmas (another excuse to indulge myself) and this morning I was upset and disgusted to find myself back in the 200s. Only 18 months ago I was celebrating in the 160s.  I now find myself only 20lb lighter than I was when I joined DD in July 2006.  I am nowhere near as fit as I had become with the weightloss, but I have a new determination to face my eating problems head-on and overcome them once and for all.  To this end I took my sweet dogs out for a celebratory walk. We took our usual route, but it was looking especially bright unnder a sharp frost so I took a few pics with my mobile phone camera and have decided to upload a few for you. I dont know how the picture loader works with text so I will just describe the pics as I upload them. The  black dog wearing a coat is my 17week old lurcher puppy, Jasper. He is a bit dopey !!

The little white dog blending in with the frost is 7 year old Kali. She's an absolute gem of a dog and I love her to bits :)

This is where part of our route takes us. This is the Rive Tame (not to be confused with the Thames in London), at one time highly polluted by industry but now cleaning up it's act. This is mainly because of the massive decline in local manufacturing industry. It's hard to believe from the pics but I live in what used to be the industrial heartlands of the north of England. this walk in the valley is about five minutes from my house.

This is the path through the trees looking particularly pretty because of the frost.

Lastly a photo of me with my daughter taken last Saturday at the house party we had to celebrate her 18th birthday. The baby on my knee is Yasmine, my one year old great-niece who is my daughter's goddaughter. We had a great time at the family party, then she let her hair down the following night when she celebrated again with her friends !!

Anyway, that is my update for the New Year. I hope you all had a good one

Anne - First of all - thanks for the posts lately! Very cute pic above - you look very pretty and I see your daughter takes after you. My d will be 18 in July! Boy - Last year of high school - I can'at believe it. The other pics are so pretty, too. Your weather looks about like ours here in Kentucky, USA. We also have some woods and green-space by our house - it's great for walking dogs and we have two, too!

I haven't been able to get on as much as I want to due to second job and other issues, too, but I really appreciate your posts to me and am very glad you are back posting. I will have to catch up with your info on your job restructure, etc. No comfort, if you aren't happy about changes at work, but it happens EVERYWHERE! I am looking for full-time work now so I can havae adequate income fro one source and more regular schedule. I am skilled, have lots of experience, a good reputation in my industry in my town and still can't find a job easily. I was offered one in April '08 that I am wondering if I should have taken, after all! Oh, well, can't look back now - only ahead! And....I guess that is what we should say about any weight gains, etc. I know I am looking at the new year to get back on track going forward. I've gained, too. So, that said, greenie, my girl - let's resolve to get on with good health, no matter what else is going on in our lives in 2009, shall we?

That looks like a beautiful place to walk, and your puppers look happy to be out and about, too. :) I had to cut back on the walks with our dogs, due to some injuries, but am now (tentatively) back at it again.

Hey Hey Merry Happy New Year!..... Those photos are so nice & you look good, even though you aren't all that happy with your current status of #'s...... Have to start right from where we are at and go with it downwards... All we can do and not look back at any regretful thoughts.... No sense in it.. Doesn't change anything... Hard pill to swallow (GULP)

Good to see that you're back! I know it's tough to get started again, but I think it'll get easier for you. And you seemed to get into a groove before--whether you get into the same one or a new one--you can do this!
