Greetings.  It's been a couple of days since I've been on.......have been feeling kind of "punky" as grandmother used to say.  Took it easy for a couple of days on exercise, BUT did a pretty big ride yesterday - I'd say about and hour and a half.  It's hard to say how far because I don't have an odometer - my riding buddy has one so when I go with her we know how far.  I didin't push it - I couldn't go untill it was already pretty hot and boy was it hot!  So I just petaled at a reasonable pace.  If I were to guess it might have been 16-18 miles.  There were several long inclines but no killer hills.  Good training.  Eating OK except I made another peach pie.  It is great and almost gone.  Whew!  Plan to ride bike again today.

Progress as of today: 9.8 lbs lost so far, only 18.2 lbs to go!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 08/09/2009:
i love bike rides and i'm still so jealous. yesterday, i went to ride my bike but my knee has been hurting all week and bad. i could hardly ride. so i just rode to the gym (10 min) used weights for 15 min and came home. what i would have done for a good long bikeride.

catepillar on 08/09/2009:
UGH it is AFRICA hot here today, I've had just about enough of the heat lol. Great job on going out anyway! I am happy for you! Here is where you can find some online meetings for OAhttp://oa12step4coes.org/ On the main OA website they also have a place to look for telephone meetings as well as face to face meetings: http://www.oa.org/meetings/find-a-meeting.php

The online meetings do not have audio but they are very well organized.

Have a great day!

selina on 08/10/2009:
Yay! I love biking and you gave me a great idea of getting my bike dusted off and used today. Hope you are having a wonderful summer!

Wednesday was OK.  I didn't exercise because I didn't feel well.  I thnk it was because I ate a bunch of mixed nuts on an empty stomach so that I could take my poison ivey medication (prednisone).  Just was "off " all night.  Better this morning.

I'll plan a ride this afternoon.  At least 40 minutes, I think.  Weather is going to be hot and muggy this weekend - looks like the Summer Reprieve is over.  We haveing the 2nd coolest Summer on record here.  It has been a blessing for exercise outdoors.  Look like rides this weekend will need to be very early or very late.  That way it's do-able.

Have a successful day all!

Progress as of today: 9.8 lbs lost so far, only 18.2 lbs to go!

Donkey on 08/06/2009:
Ooo, that prednisone is a b-word. Steroids cause weight gain so do not be discouraged.

halley on 08/06/2009:
It's fine to take a rest day or two. The ride sounds nice!

Re: My 18 year old is busy baking these days. She started her homemade dog treat business 2 years ago and does really well with it. She's had an interest in cooking/baking since she was in grade school so her dad knew that her vocation would have something to do with food. Her business keeps her busy mainly from Wed-Sat. She sells her wares at the local farm market on Saturdays but also takes orders during the week. December is a busy time also, she sells lots of 'doggy bags' (dog gift baskets) for the holidays. Besides her doing her business she's a kind of a home body. She likes to shop and go to movies with friends but she also likes to spend time with her dad and I, she still likes sharing pizza and monopoly night with us. I hope that never stops. Take care hollybelle.

Encouraging Word

Wednesday 8/5/2009

The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him.

~ Lamentations 3:25, NLT

Yesterday was OK.  I rode bike about 40-45 minutes.  No accidents!  LOL!

Eating was OK - had a bowl of ice cream and choc syrup and almonds for a treat.

More later......

Progress as of today: 9.8 lbs lost so far, only 18.2 lbs to go!

halley on 08/05/2009:
No accidents - way to go! Do you have different routes? I really only have a couple of places I can ride, so it tends to be a lot of the same thing.

Re: Fixing different foods ~ I fix the REALLY good stuff for potlucks & the times we go to my parent's house (sometimes twice a week)... Right now between those, I give my all in cooking for others outside my household...My family loves it when I am fixing for other people (LOL).... I make everything from scratch...Cobblers,dinner rolls, casseroles, fried potatoes/onions... Basically fix like I know they like to eat.... If I did fix food at home like I was raised & bought all the bacon, sausage & oodles of other things along those lines..I would be a 300#+ person no doubt.... I am a people pleaser bottom line is the best I can describe... I love to make people happy & my cooking (southern I guess) is an enjoyment for me..Come from a long line of down-home cooks & that goes over BIG... I just need to make the nice chicken salads, etc for when there is a meal away from home like I did before....

RE: Bike riding ~ Not me.... I have a bike, but it needs the tubes/tires..Budget is spent on a whole host of other needs, so the bike waits..I never did ride it...It was the yard sale bike...

Have a wonderful day!

Quote of the Day

"We have to fight them daily, like fleas, those many small worries about the morrow, for they sap our energies."
– Etty Hillesum

About Etty Hillesum

Etty Hillesum, less famous than her contemporary, Anne Frank, lived a short life of great courage. She was born in 1914 in the Netherlands to a Dutch father and a Russian mother. She studied law, Slavic languages, and psychology. Hungry for knowledge, she cut down on food in order to buy books. She went voluntarily to the Westerbork camp to help fellow Jews interned by the Nazis. Her letters detail her experiences; her more meditative diary focuses on issues of faith. She died at Auschwitz in 1943.

Yesterday was a good day.  Exercise was 40 minute walk with dogs.  Was tired and didn't go for bike ride.  Will go tonight!   P.S.  I just want to go on record to say that if I have typos or misspellings in either my posts or my comments to anyone - please excuse.  I don't have time to make them perfect.   One of the reasons I quit posting was because it took so long.  But I decided I'd post anyway - imperfect as it is.  Wonder why there isn't a spellcheck on the toolbar here???

Progress as of today: 9.8 lbs lost so far, only 18.2 lbs to go!

h82bfat on 08/04/2009:
Glad you had a good day. Don't worry about the missed bike ride, we're all entittled to a day off - plus I think our bodies actually NEED a day off every now and then.

Don't worry about the typos - Between husbands, boyfriends, bosses & children - everyone here should be quite fluent in gibberish! :c)

biscottibody59 on 08/04/2009:
Have a good day and keep up the good work!

Donkey on 08/04/2009:
I agree about the Spellcheck issue. It's about time someone has spoken up about it. Don't worry so much about typos and stuff. It's the message that counts! :-)

WE NEED SPELLCHECK!!!

halley on 08/04/2009:
Good point about spell check - but I don't think that anyone really cares! Glad you got aout there and walked. Sounds like fun.

Quote of the Day

"Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: you don't give up."
– Anne Lamott

About Anne Lamott

American author Anne Lamott is best known for Bird by Bird, her book on writing, and Operating Instructions, about her first year as a single mother, but she has also written several strongly autobiographical novels. She was born in San Francisco in 1954 and has written about her dysfunctional family life, her recovery from alcoholism, and her Christian faith. She lives in Northern California with her son and writes a column for Salon.

Well, yesterday was most wonderful on tthe exercise.  Lots of hills and the new route was great in that I didn't get bored because it was the same route I/we have been taking.  We didn't quite make ti to 23 miles, it was 20, mostly because the route my friend mapped out was not as long as she thought.  That's OK we added to it by taking some side streets and circling around a few times, but we just couldn't find 3 more miles.  I am not as sore as I thought I'd be.  My shoulders are a bit tight.  We almost had a bad accident.  NOT on the road, though.  It was actually on the sidewalk.  There are a couple of places that we had to get on the sidewalk for a small stretch to cut through to the next street because the traffic is so heav y and this one place acutally is a small concrete bridge that crosses a creek.  It is closed on the right by a high chain-link fence (thank goodness), anyway there was a really high ledge going ON to the bridge.  I hit it going pretty fast and my back tire came up past my head.  I thought I was a "gonner" for sure.  I let go of the handlebars and grabbed on to the chain-link fnece with both hands and my bike just plopped down to the ground between my legs!  My friend came up behind and to the side of me and had to stop really fast, but didn't actually run into me hard.  The bikes were OK, my friend wasn't hurt and I didn't get a scratch on me except a small contusion on my left wrist.  We really lucked out.  And I thought the dangers of biking riding were on the road!!

Well, onward and upward, dear DD buddies!  God bless!

Progress as of today: 9.8 lbs lost so far, only 18.2 lbs to go!

halley on 08/03/2009:
Wow - that sounds like a close call. Roads are dangerous for bikers, I wish it was a little safer.

h82bfat on 08/03/2009:
Glad to hear you are ok. It's getting to where it's pretty precarious to ride a bike around town. Even the designated bike paths around here have issues (broken glass & piles of trash, dog crap, pot holes, pedestrians that block your way and force you into the grass, which can contain all of the aforementioned. Don't know why they put them in if they aren't going to maintain them). Sorry to hear the new route wasn't all you'd hoped it to be - you'll find one, seems like you've got a pretty dedicated, determined group of riders so you will find something.

glycrina on 08/03/2009:
I thought exercising was supposed to be good for your health. HAHAHA.

Donkey on 08/03/2009:
Yowza! Glad you're ok! (Had to laugh at glycrina's comment though.)

Quote of the Day

"People usually fail when they are on the verge of success. So give as much care to the end as to the beginning."
– Lao-Tzu

About Lao-Tzu

The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu is believed to have lived in the 4th century B.C. Little is known about him, but it is likely that he wrote the Tao te Ching

I liked this quote.  Is this the same as saying - Don't give up?  Maybe.....

Not giving up here.  I overate a bit yesterday - everything was so tasty and I made a fresh peach pie and had 2 pieces. But back on track today.  One day won't hurt.  I'll make good choices today.  I don't have to fear a downward spiral.  I am the one making the choices.  I'm not at someone elses mercy, after all!!

I have noticed that sometimes when I go on a pattern of bad food choices I seem to have a mind set that I don't have a choice - or that the bad choice is what I must choose.  This is something that is unconscience (until now).  Does anyone else do that?  I mean it's almost like I believe I "can't" make the choice to do well by myself.  Well, I know that's a lie.

We have a fruit/Veg stand in our neighborhood and they have some great stuff in the summer.  The scuppermong grapes from the Carolinas have come in and I think I've eaten about 2 lbs of those in the last 2-3 days.  They are great.  They're healthy, though.  I ate healthy other than the pie, I guess.,  No exercise yesterday except brushing, bathing and drying two big old dogs.  That was enough.  I strained my back a litttle out of "whack" pushing and pulling those two into position. So I got on the inversion stand and lined my vertebrae back up.  That helps so much!  The dogs smell so nice and are so silky now.  Grilled boneless pork chops last night. and had corn on the cob.

Having Vanilla Iced coffee now and going to run the vaccum, exciting stuff-  then walk with the dogs and go for a bike ride with friend later - about 3 p.m.  It is not supposed to be too hot today.  the 23 mile bike ride is scheduled for today - wish me luck.  I'll need it.  Seriously - I think I can do it.  I'll report back on how it goes.

Progress as of today: 9.8 lbs lost so far, only 18.2 lbs to go!

catepillar on 08/02/2009:
A nice long bike ride sounds so adventurous and exciting! Good for you!

Yes, I know what you mean about believing that I can't make the choice by myself. I lean so heavy on my HP during my moments where I feel helpless and like "oh well, I'll do better tomorrow" because I am totally craving the desire to us my food as a substitute for some hole in my life that I am not content to wait until it is filled.

Dogs are awesome! And giving them a bath IS exercise, in my opinion LOL

Good luck with your bike ride! I bet you will be so proud of yourself when you finish!

h82bfat on 08/02/2009:
Are you keeping an actual food journal? When I first started, I was making really bad choices - both content & frequency - but by physically writing down everything I ate - FROM THE MOMENT I EVEN CONTEMPLATED EATING IT - I began questioning whether I REALLY needed it. Now, I don't reach for much junk (I still have an occasional moment though) and I reach out in general, less frequently..........

Hope you enjoyed your bike ride. 23 miles - IMPRESSIVE!

Scales reported a 2.6 loss from my beginning weight!  That's more like it!  I was beginning to think they would never move, but this week I see some progress.  And I have to say I haven't starved, either.  I have stepped up the exercise, though.  It's been slow going, but that's the way I like it!

Gonna exercise tonight on the bike if weather permits.  More later.........

UPDATE 12:15 a.m.  Up late took a nap earlier but waiting for daughter to get home......went for a bike ride for 45 minutes tonight.  Took a new route in the neighborhoods,  It was a bit more flat than the usual one.  Thanks goodness!  I am improving my effeciency on changing gears and it's getting easier.  i read about how to do it on line.  It's not an exact science like I thought..  It's more about learning your bike and the perception of how the effort feels to you at the different speeds. All this time I just changed between about 7 gears and they weren't even the best 7 gears!  What do you know!!!!   Guess an old dog CAN learn new tricks.  Hey I have enough gray hair to osay that - trust me!

Progress as of today: 9.8 lbs lost so far, only 18.2 lbs to go!

CUDOS for the weight loss AND the bike riding. Maybe someday I'll hop back on mine......when I think my butt can take it! Only 15 min on the elliptical trainer yesterday and none so far today.  But that's OK.  I may need a rest.  Will go for a good bike ride tomorrow night if weather permits.  Rained here tonight and didn't get home until now (8:30) so hard to work in a ride.  Have eaten OK today and yesterday.  Thanks for comments, everyone.

Not so bad on the eating Sun or Mon.  went for only 30 minute bike ride - all up hill!! on Sunday.

Monday back was a bit tight so did elliptical trainer (for the first time in AGES) for only 15 minutes and lifted weights for upper body (mid back) to hold shoulders back for a few minutes.  Also had Mango Cosmo - a rare thing for me to drink alcohol.  I'm sure it was loaded with sugar.  I checked calories and best I can calculate it was about 200-250.  No nutrition, though.  Oh, well.

Today - who knows.....I would like to bike, but rain predicted about 6:00 p.m.  If it rains I'll do ET again.

Everyone have a good day!  God bless.
