June Challenge total Mo to Date - 124 minutes

Exercise yesterday was only 34 minutes of walking - to and from work. Once I got home I began work on dinner and still cleaning bedroom/bathroom/closet and drawers. Also, I don't think I have mentioned that this is Recital time at daughter's dance school and the recital lasts 4 nights. Rehearsals are this week and I am a VOLUNTEER. So I had some phone calls and work to do associated with that. Didn't sit on the couch AT ALL, though.

Calories yesterday weren't as good as I hoped. I didn't "add as I go" during the day and a cookie brough in by a vendor put me over the top. Total came in at 1635. Not terrible, but too high to lose, I think.

I'll do better today. The next week will be hard because during rehearsal and recital there is ALWAYS loads of food around backstage - not always the healthiest choices, either. I'll have to STAY CONSCIENCE of what I am eating and be faithful to working exercise in every chance I get.

Hang in there, dear buddies! Have a Blessed Day!

Progress as of today: 16.4 lbs lost so far, only 5.6 lbs to go!

maybe you can bring your own snacks for back stage? great job walking to work.

Bring a tin of Altoids to rehersal/recital. The mint will curb your appetite. Of course, drink plenty of water!!!

Hi,stick at it.At least you got some exercise in, so it was'nt too disasterous!!Julie

You are so close to ur ideal weight. Way to go. Im not sure if you are a coffee drinker but coffee helps me in curbing my appetite but i end up not eating as much i would do.

(Healthy Eating and Exercise)
Weight: 155.6

Good Morning! Exercise for yesterday - was ZERO so total will remain 1.5 hours for the YTD moth of June, but watch out tomorrow because I walked to work this morning and I will walked home this afternoon. PLUS I am going to do ET and other regular exercise tonight.

I needed to clean bedroom/bath and closet so I skipped the workout yesterday. Additionally, my muscles were a little "tired" - (not sore) from the resistance on the ET, I think, so I rested them a bit. Could/should have walked, but didn't. I hope to have a neat/clean bed/bathroom SOON! I really need to get rid of SO much.

Anyway, the calories were good yesterday - I kept them right about 1400. It was hard because daughter worked at the dance studio yesterday and wanted to "go to lunch" at O'Charley's. We both ordered the Fried Chicken Salad and those rolls of course. They have a reduced Fat Honey Mustard Dressing, though (if you didn't know). I ate two rolls - NO BUTTER and I could only eat 1/4 of my salad. She ate about 1/2 of hers so we brought the leftovers home for husband to eat last night. He loved it. Even 1/4 of that salad is a BUNCH of calories, though. Needless to say, I didn't eat tha much the rest of the day/night. But sometimes it's like that. I am glad I was able to do it without too much stress. I wound up eating a bowl of cereal - Raisin Nut Bran (YUM). I thought about mindless munching off and on the whole night, but I distracted myself with work or reading or something else everytime I caught myself daydreaming about food. I really WASN'T hungry.

I think that has been the BIGGEST improvement or change I have made since September 2006 - REALLY being honest with myself on whether I am TRULY hungry or not. I used to tell myself and others "I am so hungry" more out of habit and to justify eating a lot. I would encourage everyone to pay particular attention to this and if you find that you REALLY have trouble determining if you TRULY are hungry or not(if you find believe you are "hungry" all the time, etc.) then try to figure out why that is. It may sound funny to some, but we must train ourselves to recognize physical hunger, thirst vs emotional hunger, thirst. For me that was 1/2 the battle. Of course the next step is learning to eat only until full or learning how much is "enough" to satisfy ourselves. It does vary from day to day, of course, but I find that I am actually satisfied with much less than I used to eat out of habit.

Well, I do rattle on this morning. Wishing you all a truly blessed day. Holly

weightlossyoyo on 06/05/2007:
That is sooo true, I say that out of habit as well. You are doing great! 1400 cal. is good, even better since you went out to eat. Very good disapline.

starfish on 06/05/2007:
good job distracting yourself from mindless munching. 1400 is great :)

mcwoo40 on 06/05/2007:
Hi,your doing well girl!!It is funny you say that about eating when you are really hungry and don't know when to stop.I don't know if you have heard of Paul McKenna he is an English hypnotist and has written a book called 'i can make you thin'.He says to estimate your hunger on a scale of 1-10.Only eat when you are feeling the physical side of hunger(rumble in the stomach)about a no3 on the scale.Stop eating when you are about a 7-8 don't fill yourself up to the brink of that you cannot move.Chew a mouthful of food 20times and put your knife and fork down every time you have put food in your mouth.I will have to get it out(it's in the attic)and read thorough it again,if you can get it where you are, or online, it is interesting. It has a section to overcome cravings.Hope i have'nt bored you.Catch up again,Julie

greengirl on 06/05/2007:
It's much harder to know when you are full because the body is slow sending you signals about it. Thats why we tend to eat more than we actually need. I tend to eat when I have the time rather than when I actually feel hungry, because my day is regimented by a timetable, because of work. I'm much more relaxed about it at weekend, when I can eat at my leisure. It's amazing how much being truthful with yourself helps you to lose the weight. I can see things a lot clearer now, and accept where I made mistakes that led to me putting weight on. Hope you have another good day tomorrow :o)

June Exercise Total: 90 minutes/1.5 hours/thru 6/3

Good morning. I will make this quick. Yesterday was an OK day. I ate between 1200 and 1400 calories - not bad! I don't know EXACTLY because I made homemade banana nut muffins and I am not sure how many calories. I looked them up on allrecipes and calorieking and averaged and educated quessed......close enough!

I exercised 45 minutes - part ET and part step aerobics and ab exercises. I am motivated this week to keep it up. I do think the challenge helps me stay faithful. I don't want many days to go by without some minutes logged, at least. I am not aiming to actually WIN the challenge, but I want to log some exercise time MOST days.....that's pretty realistic.

I know we have many new members and quite a few returning "old time" members and I would like to comment on all diaries, but our numbers are many right now. I may just post a "holly was here" like Scruffy used to do so that everyone knows I read it and didn't think I had anything to add to comments already made. Many times there anything I could say has already been said by others but I would like everyone to know I am out here reading and caring!

A blessed day to you all!

greengirl on 06/04/2007:
Hi Hollybell. I always think your comments are well thought out and relevant. I often think I have nothing to add because it's all been said before too. When you were asking about schools in the Uk, they are similar but not the same to grades in the US. Most children start nursery school at age 3 or 4, but not formal schooling until the autumn before their fifth birthday. They go into reception year, followed by years one to six in what we call primary school or infant/junior school. At age 11 they move on to five years of secondary education at high school (years 7 to 11). This is where my daughter is up to now. After that they either leave school or follow the academic route or technical route, going to sixth form or technical colleges for either two or three years. That leads on to University for some people where they take a degree course. This is known as higher education. Sarah needs good results to get into the sixth form of her choice. She applied, and has been accepted by three local colleges but the one that is the best one has asked for high results. We will keep our fingers crossed, and if she doesnt get them she will go to one of the others. Everything is about government league tables now, and the kids are under lots of pressure. I'm glad i'm not at school now!!!!

mcwoo40 on 06/04/2007:
Hi,you alway's make my mouth water when you talk about your food, especially banana nut muffins. When i used to do my cooking job to use the ripe bananas up i used to make a banana sponge and do a custard sauce for the old folks.I try and avoid making cakes these day's for obvious reasons!!Your not doing so bad yourself with the exercise.I'm just cramming it in before weigh day tomorrow, stick at it ,girl.Julie

Weight: 155.6

Good morning. Couldn't post yesterday as got too caught up in things around here. First of all my friend and I had agreed to meet at Panera Bread for breakfast and coffee. Then we decided to go shopping-something I never do - especially with a girlfriend. We really had some fun. I didn't buy too much, and I didn't find everything I was looking for, though. I can't remember the last time I just went out and spent the whole day wandering around with no schedule or agenda whatsoever. I bought some pajamas, a pair of white bermuda shorts,a workout type jacket with capri pants that match and a batik-looking top. Of course they were all good deals! I still need some basics - khaki shorts and pants and some tee-shirts that fit! I may hit the walmart for the tee-hirts. I only like v-neck ones with a little spandex in them so that they hold their shape. Picky-picky!

Enough of that - on the exercise/eating fronts - I didn't exercise Friday, but my food intake was OK. I consumed about 1600 calories. A little more than average for the week, but not bad. On Saturday I did 25 minutes of ET (195 calories burned, 2.1 miles at an avg of 4.6 mph and 55 rpms at level 6). Pretty good. Then I did my abs and some stretches. Then we walked for about 6 hours while shopping. We really didn't sit down at all. My friend is a very meticulous shopper, she evidently leaves no hanger unturned! She bought more than I did! Anyway, it is a good thing I stayed on my feet all day because I really over did it with the calories. I counted them up even though I knew they would be way over (this is a big milestone for me-usually I don't face the music when I know I have goone way over!) 2053 was the total. Whew - oh well - today's another day.

I will get on the ET today and see if I can do a little more than I did yesterday. I don't want to increase too much at once, though since I am just getting back into the ET workouts again.

It wouldn't have been a bad day calorie-wise at all IF I hadn't treated myself to a milkshake from Sonic. That was 698 calories by itself! I hadn't had one in so long. I had no idea how many cals were in them, but it does make me stop and think - I used to drink one SEVERAL days a week PLUS eat anything else that presented itself to me in the meantime! LOL! No wonder I was upward of 173 pounds. I shudder to think where I was headed before I "came to my senses" during that doctor visit in September and decided enough was enough. Not that I eat perfectly all the time now (obviously), but I am on a much better track and that is something to be grateful for and to strive to improve day by day.

Have a great day. Recital rehearals start next week so I hope I will have time to post. I am helping back stage and will be really busy at work, too. Blessings to you all! Holly

WOW 698 in one milkshake?? What on earth do they put in them??? Thanks for your sympathetic comment on the whole 'chocky mountain' debacle!!! My daughter is 16, she is the baby of the family with my sons being 30 and 21. It was like having three only children!! The powers of contraception, I suppose!! She is a good girl, and right in the middle of important exams so we thought it would do her good to get out with the girls last Friday! Hope you have a good week this week, good luck with the rehearsals :o)

Your mini-vacation sounds wonderful! And so do all the clothes you bought for yourself! I really like those days when there is nothing else that is going to happen except what I want to have happen lol. I feel the same way as you with the tee's..I don't like how some t-shirts play themselves out after a couple of wearings/washings. That whole TOM thing is a royal pain, isn't it? UGH Especially when the cycles are shorter than a 21-day cycle. Oh well...I think we are both so much better off that we are watching what we eat, losing weight and exercising! That is the best thing we can do, and hopefully avoid surgery.

Have FUN with the hiking on your vacation and take LOTS of pictures! **hugs**

Yesterday was good. I wound up eating some vanilla wafers I found in the pantry late last night but it didn't make me over my calorie total. I wonder if I would have eaten them if it would have.....we'll never know will we - LOL! Total calories yesterday was 1135. That is the lowest I have had in many days! I exercised 40 minutes yesterday which brings my total for the May challenge to 12 hours and 40 minutes.

Tourguidebarbie - I would count the waitressing and babysitting as exercise. We didn't do badly - but I agree HOP beat us soundly. I don't feel like a loser, though. I have pepped up my exercise in these last few days and I think it is because of a little healthy competition. When I take my total MINUTES and divide by the number of days 760 Minutes divided by 18 days (I think) it comes to over 42 minutes per day. That ain't bad. Better than sitting around, anyway! I am going to keep it up.

Well, husband and I have made our vacation plans. It's going to be a mini-vacation - that is all we decided we could do time-wise right now. Maybe next summer we will plan for a trip to a more exotic place. This year we are going to go to North Carolina Mountains and stay in a log cabin. Dog will go with us. We can hike a lot - YAY - we wanted to go somewhere we could stay really active. This place has a private waterfall and screened porch with bed on it for sleeping (there's a bed inside, too - of course). It has it's own gazebo and is cute as can be in the pictures. We found it on vrbo.com (vacation rentals by owner) if you haven't tried this site you may want to check it out for your next vacation. It has properties all over the world not just US. The cabin is near Cashiers, NC.

Well, off to work. Everyone have a blessed weekend. Holly

Good job on the calories and exercise.

Your log cabin vacation sounds awesome - that is one of my favorite things to do in the fall. I have yet to experience the mountains in the spring/summertime so you'll have to fill me in all about it. From what you've said so far, it sounds like you will have an amazing time!!

Woo-Hoo - it's the last day of school!

I did pretty well yesterday - with food and exercise both. I exercised for 40 minutes-total-20 minutes on ET for 161 Cals burned, 1.3 miles and an average of 4.2 nmph. Target heartrate where I wanted it to be between 138-148. I did 20 minutes additional of step and abs. Almost the same as the day before and the same as this a.m. exactly - what are the odds of that happening! I may go for an additional 20 minutes on the ET and some more step and abs tonight since we are having leftovers for supper. We'll see - I have a lot of work to do on the computer tonight, too.

Daughter is off to a graduation party after rehearsals - one of her dance chums. I think she is beginning to realize that will be her (graduating, that is) in only 2 more years.

Yesterday and the day before I estimate my calories at about 1440. Today is not over so can't tell - but, LOL, I feel pretty strong about being able to keep in my limit. I am keeping count, but only writing initials and calories down, I don't have time to post memus like I used to. That's too bad because I love reading what everyone else has to eat. I get good ideas that way and I like to go back and review my own menus in case I forget what a 1200 cal day looks like-HA!

Anyway, I will edit this entry if I do more exercise - Tourguidebarbie - we will need to post our total exercise time tomorrow and decide if we want to do it week by week for the next month, etc. Did anyone else join us in our exercise challenge? it helped me a little, I believe. You are getting more exercise since you are working at the restaurant, I'll bet. If so, if I were you, I'd count some of that somehow. I think it would be perfectly legitimate.

Blessings to you all!

Hi Hollybelle, another good day for you I see. you are setting a good example for the rest of us!! The reason I hate the weights, I think, is because it was always my hubbys hobby, when he was younger and fitter. We always had a weight bench, or multigym somewhere in the house and I used to hate the noises he made, and the amount of time he spent lifting them. Its just a prejudice on my part. Dont get me wrong, I have always had a set of dumbells of my own, but somehow I never enjoyed them like Pete did. However, I certainly will be using them in the coming months and hopefully they will help me defy time!!! And turn back the clock LOL!! Will keep you posted with my progress :o)

Hey! My total *At the Gym* work out hours are 7hrs and 25 mins. If you count the waitressing and my babysitting *lol* and running around at the local state park i think i have done about 10 hour total. No where near where i wanted to be... BUT there is always next month *or actually this month since it's the 1st of June today!* I have you down for 11hours and 20 mins which means you beat me but HOrn_of_Plenty joined and had 18 hrs and 10 mins... leaving us both in the dust! (Healthy Eating and Exercise)
Weight: 155.6

Good morning! Thanks for the words of encouragement on the last couple of posts. It has been really hard for me to get and stay motivated on exercise mostly because of energy level due to those pesky female issues, I think. But....that is behind me (once again) and right now I am feeling fairly energetic (again). It's really kind of baffleing because I have NEVER had energy problem until last couple of years. I know I am getting older (SIGH-aren't we all), but I have NEVER believed that age had anything to do with anything much at all. I don't believe in a stero-typical 30 year old or 40 year old or 50 year old. I say - defy the odds!

Last night I did 45 minutes of exercise - 21 minutes on the Eliptical Trainer, 14 minutes on step aerobics and 10 minutes on abs. When I was done I realized that I had worked up at good sweat - and - I felt wonderful. When I walk (my usual exercise choice) I hardly perspire at all unless it's really hot and humid outside. It's just not that strenuous even though I walk fast. The ET is a bigger challenge for me. I had not been using it much at all because husband had moved it parallel to the TV and it hurt my neck to watch TV while on it. But I got on it anyway - it's getting humid here and I hate to walk outside if it is too nasty. It made me think - exercise may be the "key" but sweat may take it beyond that....to success. I just felt so much better than after a walk and I think I got a better workout in less time. It had just been so long since I'd been on the ET, I had fogotten. I think I am getting fired up again to exercise on the thing. We'll see. The 21 minutes was worth 170 calories burned, 1.5 miles and an average of 4.3 mph. YAY!

Tomorrow is last day of shool. SAT test is Saturday. Next week rehearsals start for dance recital. I will be monitoring snack counter at the theatre during rehearsals. Other than that I won't have to do too much carting of daughter around. Recital is always hectic. It is only 4 shows this year, though. Also - as far as I can tell - daughter isn't in that many numbers - maybe 5-6, but I'm not sure. Then June 17th -July 7 (3 weeks) daughter will be at the University in the dance program that she was selected for. After that we will have National Dance competitions in Tennessee and then there will be about 4 weeks left of summer before school starts again. Daughter will get her driving permit in July - (if she has time to study for the written test - LOL) and will be eligible to test for license in January. Within the next year she won't need me so much to drive her everywhere - mixed emotions!

Have a wonderful blessed day EVERYONE!

Hello and thank you for the comments and the welcome!

You asked how I got into law enforcement, it's an odd kind of story as I did not grow up wanting to be a police officer,I wanted to be a vet!

At the time that I transitioned over to working for the City I was actually working in a medical office as an insurance processor and I was teaching at our local community collage's continuing education course for medical office assisting. I enjoyed my job, but was unhappy in the office I was in. As I was looking for a new job, the position for animal control officer within the city opened up and I applied. I got that job and maintained it for 4 years, which was the administrative position I referred to.

I applied to go to the police academy in October of 2005 and was accepted and started the academy in January, graduating March 25 of 2006. My position in my department is Community Partnership, which basically means I act as a liaison between the department and the public and I am in charge of educational programs and crime prevention. :-) I love working with the kids and people I come in contact with, for the most part,it's nice being in my position as people are generally happy to see me unlike my patrol officer counterparts.

Hello. I was not able to post all weekend - the 3 - day weekend for Memorial Day Holiday was good, but I had TOM (AGAIN). Wasn't too bad, but didn't feel all that well. Exercise was sparce. Eating was a little over the top, but not too bad.

Walking for 1 hour on Friday and other exercise, I will count another hour on Sunday so 2 more hours to long on to the May challenge with TourguideBarbie (Renee). That brings my challenge total time to 10 Hours and 35 minutes. That's isn't as much as I hoped for. But.....I have today and two more days to go so I will do as much as I can with the time I have left.

We had wonderful food at our house on Sunday - Mark's family came over and I ate everything I wanted, but I really didn't want as much as I could have, I guess. Then Monday I was back on the usual plan. We had hamburgers and sausages on the grill. Then we had corn on the cob, fruit salad, cole slaw, baked beans, green beans, macaroni and cheese, key lime pie, strawberry cake, blackberry pie, prune cake, I can't remember anything else, you get the idea........

Well, I am hoping this week will be a good week diet wise. Wishing everyone a blessed day.

That is : I let emotional things stand in my way of exercise and eating right and I have the power NOT to do that. Sounds simple, right? It is and it isn't! I think it is a lot about what my "will" is. And by that I don't mean "willpower". I mean it all comes down to if it is my "will" to do what I need to do to reach my goals. What I want as far as my health goes, what we all want with regard to health, is something that for most people takes deliberate, intentional action. So I am vowing to make very deliberate decisions again AND to follow through with action to back those actions up. I am proud of how far I have come -don't get me wrong - I have lost about 20 lbs (my weight tracker isn't updated)and I think I do better than "most" people my age, etc., but what I want is "better than average" - not perfection - but better than "most" for my health. I am talking about health here, too - not appearance. The fact is I am just tired most days and I think the only thing that will cure that is more exercise and healthy eating (along with my daughter growing up LOL). So.....with that, here I go with another committment to myself to be intentional in my decisions regarding exercise and eating choices.

Exercise for yesterday was 4 miles of walking - 65 minutes. I timed myself. Usually I don't know how far I walk because I walk in the woods and the distance is not marked. I take different routes everyday so I just time myself without knowing the distance, but, after the discussion earlier in the week about approx how long it would take to walk a mile, I decided to run an experiment. I walked between a 15 minute mile and a 17 minute mile for an average of 16 minutes per mile. Pretty good! That is walking pretty fast, but not killing myself (or the dog).

Menus for yesterday were:

B: Cereal, Coffee

L: Salmon Cake, bite of Salad (it wasn't good) 1/2 a no bake cookie

S: 100 Calorie Pk and Edy's Fruit Bar

D: Fazoli's Kid's Ravioli and 1 1/2 breadsticks

Husband wasn't home for dinner last night so daughter and I were on our own. She wanted Fazioli's. The kid's meal is plenty for me I could have done without the whole breadstick, but it tasted good to me. I usually don't like their bread. Calories came to aroumd 1400.

I will be home most of the weekend so should be able to post this weekend. We are having husband's family over for cookout on Sunday. We refer to this as the "cousin's cookout" he grew up with about 4 male cousins and one female and this is the weekend they have a little reunion at our house. They are a diverse group!

Have a blessed day everyone. God is good.

Progress as of today: 16.4 lbs lost so far, only 5.6 lbs to go!

Yay for a good eating and exercise day! You are SO close to goal, and I know how difficult it gets the closer you are. I wish I was at least in the ballpark ;) I hope you have a great weekend!

(Healthy Eating and Exercise)
Weight: 155.6

Thank you to all who wrote encouraging words to me during my "mood" yesterday. I am somewhat better today. IT all boils down to - I am tired to being THE parent in my household! I'll let it go at that.

Yesterday eating and exercise - wise was alright. I did write down my menus:

B: Forgot to eat any!

Snack: Granola Bar

Lunch: BBQ sandwich, Cheetos and Diet Coke

Dinner: 1/2 Grilled chicken Breast, Grilled Asparagus, Grilled Peppers, Corn on the Cob with Butter 1/2 roll

Snack: Cereal

I think the total is about 1250-1400. Pretty good. I didn't exercise except for 30 minutes walking. This brings my total hours exercising since 5/14 to 8.5 hours. At this rate I don't think I will be hard to beat this month. I am planning on a long walk tonight with doggie. She is my best companion these days!

Progress as of today: 16.4 lbs lost so far, only 5.6 lbs to go!

Im glad you are in better spirits today.

Way to go on your calories! Oh and 30 minutes of exercise is better than none at all. I hope you and your doggie pal enjoy your walk tonight! :o)

Have a great weekend!

Hi,Don't worry, i am alway's in a mood i think it is hormonal with me.Although since i have lost some weight i am a little better. One reason was that,I used to get mad with myself for eating too much, then take it out on the people nearest to me ie hubby.Exercise definately makes me feel better,i take all the stress and anger out on the machines!!Keep up the good work,Julie

I sometimes think my dog is the only one in the house who really loves me!!! And thats only because I am the one who feeds her!!! I only think that when I'm in a bad mood tho :o)

In 10 days, 8.5 hours of walking sounds like a LOT to me! Good calories total, too! I really liked your dinner menu!
