(Healthy Eating and Exercise)
Weight: 164.4

Rode only about 5 miles last night.  Wound up working on the Mountain Bike my friend found for $100.  I may wind up with it.  See the details in yesterday's post below.  I will ride the trails tonight if I can get the bike to the shop to look into a humming noise coming from the back end that I believe may be the brake.  As I said below...it has been in an accident that may have maladjusted rear brakes.

Later......read up on humming noise from back end of the bike - may be something to do with the "hub" which is over MY head, so I definitely need someone else to look at it.  Probably a pretty easy fix, though!  Probably won't get to ride it tonight - so will hit the road with my Raleigh, anyway!

Ever Later....the peaches are here, the peaches are here.  The Market on the corner opened up this week and I picked up some South Carolina peaches today - they were GREAT.  Bought 8 and ate for dessert at lunch.  I also picked up 2 heirloom tomatoes - wonderful pink one and a purple and green....can't keep the names straight, but I know I like these two varieties.  Maria....it won't be long before the scuppernong grapes are ready!!  We usually get them at this market and only this one in August!  There's always something to look forward to.

Progress as of today: 13.6 lbs lost so far, only 14.4 lbs to go!

Good find on the mountain bike!

Thanks for your support. x

Congrats on your new find :) Hopefully you can tweak the brake issues so it will be riding smooth! Have a good day Holly :)

$100 for a mountain bike is a GREAT deal!! Hopefully the noise is an easy fix:) Have a great day!

Mmmm, fresh of the tree peaches!! Heirloom tomatoes, drool!

Congrats on the new bike!

Maria7 on 07/10/2012:
Hahahahaha!!! :-D I hear ya on those scuppernong grapes that you and I LOVE! They are usually here in SC in August, which to me I observe as the beginning of fall when the scuppernongs arrive! I bought 2 fresh peaches at the local farmers market last week and let them set in the fridge and had to throw them out today! :-( How did I do that??? Anyway...I baked a pineapple cake this evening and have been into that...I know...'naughty girl'... Good for you on sticking with your bike riding. I may get some in after the heat wave lets up...we've been having some really warm temps...we also had a severe thunderstorm recently that uprooted a gigantic (I'd guess about 100 ft tall) oak tree across the road from us. Thankfully the tree fell sideways from the home of the yard it was in instead of backwards or even frontwards (would have put it into the road if not over on our place some)...we have tree debris covering our yards from front to back and tree limbs down in our yard (there are many trees here)...But...thank the Lord for keeping us all safe! Hope you have a good evening...even though I haven't been posting often, I come on here often and read others' posts, including yours! :-D Take care, Hollybelle

Maria7 on 07/10/2012:
PS...Congrats on the mountain bike! :-D

Excitment all round holly:) We get our stone fruit at Christmas time!!! That's got you thinking I bet, all seems a bit strange doesn't it? Sounds like bikes are like cars, we only know so much before we hand off to a professional:)

(Healthy Eating and Exercise)
Weight: 164.4

Ended up eating ok yesterday.  Exercise wound up being brushing and washing the dogs.  The one dog is a real workout and I got her.  She has so much fur!  They are both very beautiful now, of course. We use a great self service pet wash place.  It's so much easier there.  Have to take them back to get their nails clipped.  The groomer doesn't work on Sunday.  They charge for this now - used to be free (although I tipped pretty well) $10 each.  I used to tip $10 for both.  The vet charges $10 each and is not as effecient.

Wish I didn't have to go back to work, but.....I do.  Glad to have a job!

Oh, and we are having temps only in the mid-80s this week - overcast with chance of scattered showers....fingers crossed!

Woo-Hoo - Paydirt!  I found a mountain bike for $100!!  My bike riding friend had a friend that wanted to sell it to her, but she didn't think it was good for her ( and she is right  since she wants to ride on the street and this bike would be very uncomfortable on the street even if she changed out the tires, etc. ).  So I said I'd take it either as trade for my old street bike that she has been riding or I'd buy it for $100 outright from her friend.  She is going to think about what to do.  Either way - I get the BMX!  I can't wait to try it out on the trails in our park tomorrow!  It's a Giant Boulder SE, I have no idea about the year-I am going to take it to the bike shop tomorrow at noon and let them take a look at it.  It doesn't look like it has been ridden much, but it has been in a small wreck.  It has a bad hum in the back - may need brakes adjusted and it has a couple of minor scrathes and a very tiny rip on the side of the seat.  I can totally work with that, though.  It got really good reviews on the biking websites.  It is an entry level bike and probably was only around $300 new, but I won't be riding those trails very aggresively so it should work for me - the little old lady from Veteran's Park BMX Trails.  I can't wait to see all the young men that ride up there get a load of me!  Hahahahaha!

legcramps on 07/09/2012:
LOL, washing big dogs is always fun! The city over from us just got a pet wash service; too late for me as I had to wash my big dog myself a few years ago. It was a big chore, but he made it fun LOL. Nail clipping fees are the same here ($10 each); seems crazy for a clip job, but what can you do when it needs to be done?

Have a great day today!

thenewMLE on 07/09/2012:
Hey Girl! Glad your temps are cooling down! We actually cooled down to 90 on Friday and have remained overcast with scattered showers and then the sun comes out enough to make steam come up off the ground. We are back in the mid 90's but horribly humid. RYC my parents are 77, both still drive and believe it or not, they live across the street from me! That has been a God-send, as when they have had bouts of serious illnesses, I have been there for them quicker than any ambulance. I know that the big dog washes are really a workout and I think $10 to clip nails isn't bad. I pay $10 for a manicure, and at least the girl know I'm not going to bite her!!! hahaha! Have a great week!

sweetpea1977 on 07/09/2012:
I have a golden retriever mix and always get exhausted after the Furminator bath and deshedding I put her through. Its worth it though since it costs so much to get it professionally done. I wonder why they charge so much to clip nails?? $10 is a lot!

moogy on 07/09/2012:

BBQ was OK.  it was really hot, but it rained - amazingly and cooled down a lot, but remained very humid!  Got home at 12:30 midnight and it hadn't rained a single drop here.  Today is going to be only 97 and this week is supposed to be mid 80s - which will seems like a cold snap!

The food at the picnic was not that good and I wasn't tempted to overeat.  I understand that people have different attitudes toward food and not everyone is a cook, or has time to cook on certain days, but really, to only bring something you picked up at the grocery store on the way to the BBQ seems a little lazy.  Nevertheless, I didn't overeat so....this morning I made delicious homemade blueberry pancakes with the best blueberries I've had all year.  Husband ate 4 big ones!

Gonna get some exercise in today - don't know if it will be cycling or ET and dvds.

UPDATE:  Exercise wound up being washing and brushing our two big dogs  I did Elle, the collie/shepherd mix with all the hair.  Husband did the big black lab.  I brushed both of them.  Have to take them back Tuesday to have nails clipped.  The groomer wasn't in on Sunday and I just cannot do it.  The groomer can do it in about a minute and a half.  They used to provide this free at the self-service dog wash and I always paid the lady $10 for both of them.  They told us today that nails were $10 each now, not free.  I guess inflation is hitting everything-LOL.  The vet charges $10 and isn't as effecient.

Progress as of today: 13.6 lbs lost so far, only 14.4 lbs to go!

Rode 20 miles yesterday.  Had my hair cut.  It's too short-it will grow but I'm kind of disappointed for how it will look at the reunion since I asked her not to cut it too short.

Going to husband's family 4th of July cookout today - it's going to be 103 degrees so I won't be looking forward to it that much.  The house is small and everyone won't fit in.  Our strategy will be to go later in the day and come home sooner than later.  I don't think they can have the fireworks this year because there is a ban due to drought conditions.

I am taking a homemade banana pudding and squash casserole.  YUM.

Will get in a little exercise before we go.  Have a good Saturday, everyone.  Later.

You must be clocking at least 100 miles a week. Sorry about your hair. Enjoy the party even though it's sweltering. Your food sounds yummy. RYC: I don't like the effect of artificial sweeteners and I'm sure they make me hungry. Highland midges are the worst. They are tiny and swarm and bite. And ITCH. They are in the same family as what are called no-see-ums in the US, but have a worse bite. As with all of this type of insect they adore me. :(

Got up and rode just about 20 miles this morning!  Very hot and I was impatient sometimes, boring terrain, mostly.  Same route I rode Wednesday - except cut off the last 10 miles and only rode the 20.

Been getting the bids for replacing ac units and a big plumbing job we need to have done, too - exciting stuff.  We have not had a water spicket out front for YEARS have to drag the hose from around back and it's a pain.  The spicket has been broken and several plumbers have been stumped by it - one actualy cut a hole in our drywall in the "weight room" in the basement and just threw up his hands and left.  So I hope someone will know how to fix that fairly simply and inexpensively - hahahaha - fat chance, I think!

Anyway - hairdresser cancelled on me yesterday - family emergency - I was almost there and she called.  I was pretty OK with it since I've had to cancel on her before.  Can't wait to have hair cut though - it's so unruly and LONG.  Odd shaped!  Since I was out yesterday and had the time I went shopping for an outfit for my 40th High School Reunion on the 14th - I wasn't going to go, but a few people have contacted me and said they were going and wanted to see me so I changed my mind.  I didn't see a single outfit that I liked.  At any price - went to Dillards, Macy's Ann Taylor, JC Penney's.  I may try Steinmart and Burlington.  I have a couple of things I could wear but would like to have something a little "snazzy".  It's a BBQ and VERY casual, but I'd like to look nice.

sweetpea1977 on 07/06/2012:
Yay, a morning bike ride. 20 miles is awesome!

Good luck on your reunion outfit search!

grannyannie on 07/06/2012:
Good job on the 20 miles! You must be getting legs of steel! I looked all over the a nice dress to wear to a wedding in Michigan and found what I wanted at Parisian. Don't know if you have that chain?

TheMother on 07/06/2012:
I can relate to the haircut situation. I cannot stand when my hair needs a trim and I can't get there for whatever reason. Since my hair is short, I usually have it cut every 4-5 weeks. This last go round, I had it cut at Great Clips, didn't like how it came out and two weeks later, had it cut at my usual salon. Now it looks the way I like it. Hope you find an outfit for your upcoming reunion.

V on 07/06/2012:

Yesterday is updated.  Rode 30 miles in the heat and felt good about it.  Taking a break today.  I babysat for 4 little kids age 3-7 during Rachel's fitness class today.  Her babsitter failed to show so I stepped in.  We are working on getting someone else to come in the morning and have a couple of leads.

We are in the process of getting quotes to replace the air conditioning - yikes - not cheap!  We'll see what happens.

grannyannie on 07/05/2012:
Well done! And babysitting for 4 kids counts as a workout! Hope you get the AC replaced soon and it's not a fortune. Still 100+?

grannyannie on 07/05/2012:
I was really lucky that it didn't get this hot while I was visiting Michigan. They are also 100+. I think we hit 90 a couple of days, but otherwise lower.

supercheese on 07/05/2012:
So yesterday on the bike I rode 10 mins and I dont know how you do it....my legs were done after that!

Nice of you to do the babysitting! Good luck with you A/C quotes.

sweetpea1977 on 07/05/2012:
Wow, great job on the bike ride. I agree, babysitting young kids counts as exercise too. :)

Good luck with your air conditioner hunt!

thenewMLE on 07/05/2012:
Look at you handling the heat!!! I'm taking a break today too, but not for the heat but stupid hormones. As the day has progressed, the miserable symptoms of TOM has a nasty grasp on my emotions and overall feeling. I just want to get on the sofa and veg... I think you can safely count babysitting 4 little ones as more than enough mental and physical exercise for one day!!! Good luck with the A/C!

Umpqua on 07/05/2012:
I'm sure babysitting those little ones was a good workout for you! We have around 10 kids in that age range in play group and things get a little hectic ;P RYC we're going to the the beach/boardwalk at Wildwood, NJ. It's in southern NJ, almost into Delaware/PA. We went last summer and had a great time!

supercheese on 07/05/2012:
Whoops! I meant 10 miles. Its a straight handle mountain bike....I'm gonna try to go again tomorrow in the morning before it gets to hot!

V on 07/05/2012:
I would have loved to play with the little ones for ya :) I'm a big kid and I don't wanna grow up ;) LOL I am hoping that you will get a fair price out of all of the quotes. I hope you are enjoying your time off Holly <3

moogy on 07/05/2012:
I would sell my body (not sure there would be many takers!!!LOL) to get my airconditioning! Bit of an exaggeration, but you know what I mean!! I am planning to stay cool for the rest of my life whenever possible, had enough sweating for one life I figure! So impressed with you riding through this heat holly! Hope you settle on an A/C soon:)

The AC didn't stay fixed. It's not too hot in the house right now.  Going to to 98 today, Thurs and Fri  and 103 Saturday.  No rain or cool-off in sight.  We are going to try and get through today, get some estimates tomorrow and get through until whatever company that wins the bid can get it fixed!  Big expense, but it's been a long time coming.  17 years old and they say around 15 years is when they give out.  We have been having at least one service call the last 3 years.  Ours is a Rheem.   I don't know if we will go with that same brand or another brand.

Riding bikes with friend at 8:30 this morning!!

UPDATE:  30 miles.  Rode in the shady neighborhood at first then wound up downtown in the middle of the festival.  Had a hotdog and a bottle of water and stayed about 30 minutes and headed back home.  I don't think I was in the shade at all from then on!  The last two miles were not pretty, but I go the ride in.

Our ac is only out on the main floor.  We still have it (knock wood) upstairs and our basement is not too uncomfortable.  We will make it.  We have ceiling fan on the first floor so as long as the upstairs ac keeps working we'll be ok.  THANKS for your concern everyone!.

Progress as of today: 13.6 lbs lost so far, only 14.4 lbs to go!

thenewmle on 07/04/2012:
Hope you get your AC fixed soon! This is too hot to be with out it! We rode this morning too and I decided even though I feel pumped and ready for the day, I like evening riding better because you know it can only get cooler! In the morning when you start out, that's the best it can be and only get hotter. I am still dripping as I am writing this...(from the girl who never sweat before last month! Enjoy your 4th and try to stay cool!

nunnermack on 07/04/2012:
Oh...that is HORRIBLE!!! What has the humidity been like back there for you??? Do you get any relief at night? Good luck to you!!

grannyannie on 07/04/2012:
Sorry your AC is breaking down just at the wrong time. Hope you get it fixed/replaced soon so you don't swelter in the awful heat. You are really rocking those bike rides. Good job! It's warm enough here for one, but too much drizzle. Itching to go for a bike ride.

moogy on 07/04/2012:
Sounds like it's upstairs for the foreseeable time holly:) I lived the first 30 years in Australia without an airconditioner. My parents asked us kids if we wanted a pool or airconditioning when we moved here and of course we said POOL!! Coming from England we had no idea what the heat was going to be like. Many a day after work I would flop in that pool fully clothed after coming home on an unairconditioned bus!! When I got married we lived in Married Quarters with the Air Force with no airconditioning and couldn't afford one until daughter was about 8, we sat around it like worshippers at a shrine!!! LOL

V on 07/04/2012:
Thank goodness I thought the entire house was without A/C

V on 07/04/2012:
Oh BTW I do not plan to attend one of the various fireworks display in my area..From my place, I can see the ones the beach as well as downtown.. After working in the public for so long, outside to boot, all I want to do is chillax and not have to deal with crowds..I guess I would but I also have to work in the morning..

15 miles yesterday.  See updates from yesterday regarding air conditioner breakdown and quick FIX!  YAY!

Last day of work this week.  Going to be nice to be off work 5 days!

The drought is really taking it's toll.  We have not had rain to speak of in so long.  All the trees are turning brown (just like the grass) and I have three hostas in my front  yard that have dried up.  My dwarf Japanese Maple has many dried leaves on it.  Even though I've watered them every day the flowers in my pots are dying.  I am going to spend some time watering.  My mom's neighborhood has even more damage to trees from no water.  This is SO unreal since last year everything stayed green through to Spring, etc.  We had an extremely mild summer and winter - it was actually perfect.  This is depressing!  Possible rain next TUESDAY!

UPDATE:  Well, the AC fix didn't last.  We are back to scratch.  Hope we can make it through tomorrow - the holiday - and get 3 companies out to give us quotes and get new AC installed before the weekend!  Phooey!  And husband is in a BAD mood (unusual for him).

Progress as of today: 13.6 lbs lost so far, only 14.4 lbs to go!

thenewMLE on 07/03/2012:
Girl, we are dry too! Lots of work calls because as the water table drops, the pier and beam homes start to sink. So it's good for work, but all my garden has died. RYC, funny story about the clips. As you know I am very new to the biking world and you were the one that introduced me to the padded riding pants (of which I am eternally grateful!) but I was not aware that clips existed until my SIL tried to kill me at that spin class and SHE had special shoes that clipped into the pedals! She asked me about my biking shoes and clips and I told her I ride in my tennis shoes on real pedals! hahaha My feet have never slipped off the pedals and my new thing is every third revolution I press my heels down for 2 revolutions and stretch my ham strings. I have always had tight ham strings and this seems to be stretching them somewhat. What is the purpose of the clips? Is it for when you do hills or stand?

TheMother on 07/03/2012:
So sorry to hear about the drought. I can imagine how frustrating it is to water the plants and they are not responding. Maybe they need a little fertilizer to help perk them up. I hope you get rain soon. Enjoy your time off from work.

grannyannie on 07/03/2012:
Doing great on your bike! Enjoy your 5 days off. I'll try to send you our constant drizzle/showers. Enjoy your 4th.

thenewMLE on 07/03/2012:
Oh, my!! Your story gave me quite a visual!! I think my fear would be not being able to get my feet out quick enough if I needed to stop. I have trouble at the red lights when I have to put my foot out and get back up AND take off. I don't multi task real well... Also, I am 5'8" but my legs are very long so my seat height is very high and it is more than a tow touch to the ground for me. If I balance on the very tip of my toes on the ground I get an immediate foot cramp!! So I think the cages or clips would give me more anxiety than benefit! But that's probably just MY problem!!!

liza36 on 07/03/2012:
Yay for 5 days off!

I love Japanese maples and I'm sorry the lack of water is affecting so much. Pray for rain or do the rain dance possibly? Enjoy the 4th.

Umpqua on 07/03/2012:
Wow, I didn't think hostas could dry up, that's terrible! I have a dwarf Japanese maple that I transplanted from front to back yard and it has done so well for me in its new location. I never water it now but of course we've been getting plenty of showers. I hope you get some rain soon!

V on 07/03/2012:
Enjoy your 5 days off(as if I had to tell you) LOL Oh RYC the article also says that too flat or fluffy pillows can hinder/compromise a neutral spine. It is a really interesting read and if Rach has M&F Hers July/August issue the article is there...I hope you had a easy last day of work <3

Em17 on 07/03/2012:
Sorry the a/c broke girly. Ours broke the other day but we got it fixed that day. I hear ya on the drought. We haven't had rain in about 3ish or more weeks and finally this morning we got LOTS and LOTS of rain. Hopefully it will send your way soon!

Yay - I actually got on the Elliptical Trainer today - 30 minutes this morning before work.  It's not going to be below 97 this week all week so I HAVE to do something.  My body was screaming for exercise!  It felt good.  Very sweaty!

I "could" have gone for a bike ride, but by the time I woke up it was so late that I was afraid if I got on the bike to go for 30 minutes, I would not have come back in time for work!  I am working only Mon and Tue this week so I may be able to ride some mornings, but I don't know it's already hot and humid early in the a.m.  so we'll see.

More later.....Hope everyone had a great weekend.

LATER UPDATE:  Woo Hoo just got back from a bike ride!  It was around 95 when I started and had dropped to high 80s when I returned in little less than an hour.  Rode 6:30-7:30ish.  Right at 15 miles and stopped at the grocery store to use their bathroom.  So good speed and went one of the routes with a lot of hills - it also has some pretty good shade as it's an established neighborhood with mature trees.  So the ride + the ET session this morning means I am on my way!  (I'm not sure where, but I'm going-LOL)

It's not all good news, though.  Our air conditioner has gone on the fritz.  We have been nursing it along for about 3 years with a service call or two and a part here and there.  Compresser replaced about 6 years ago and just putting off getting new units - but it may be finally time.  It's not too bad in the house as the sun is down and we have a couple of ceiling fans and we can always go to the basement which  is cool most of the time.  We practically lived down there when we had the tree disaster 3 years ago (some of you all will remember that).  So we'll be ok for a few days, mostly!

THIRD UPDATE:  Air conditioner FIXED!  A friend recommended a guy who moonlights and he was able to come right over and fix it.  Very reasonable and we will use him again and will .  Units were frozen and needed Freeon.

Progress as of today: 13.6 lbs lost so far, only 14.4 lbs to go!

Good job on getting the workout in before it gets too hot. Have a good day Holly!

Great work on the elliptical, it's too hot to be working out outdoors... Stay well!

liza36 on 07/02/2012:
Good for you for getting it done before work. Feels great to get it out of the way, especially in hot temps.

Umpqua on 07/02/2012:
Yay, great work getting on the eliptical!

grannyannie on 07/02/2012:
Good job on an early workout. I know what you mean about heat (not that we get much of it!) and not being able to exercise.

supercheese on 07/02/2012:
Yay for early morning workout! I give you credit waking up early lol.

Thank God you got your AC fixed! Mine was hanging in there a couple years ago, and it was a financial strain when I finally had to replace it. I'm glad you find someone who would come out when you needed him AND not kill you with the charges. Didn't that evening ride feel good as the temps dropped? We only had that happen once and it was with a pending storm, but to lose 5 degrees while you are riding is so refreshing! We don't have ANY trees on our rides as it is the open levee. What I wouldn't give for a little shade!!! We were 98 degrees yesterday with 15 MPH winds that we rode into. I think I am getting used to it though because I was ready to go yesterday when hubby said "It's time!" The last couple of weeks I have just grunted at him and wasn't happy until I actually got up on the levee. I don't want to wish summer away, but I just wish it was 20 degrees cooler!! Have a great day!

Thank goodness you got the AC fixed. Not a good time to be without!

(Healthy Eating and Exercise)
Weight: 164.4

Temps above 100 here still.  103 index = 106!  Just too hot.  Lifted weights yesterday - today nothing.  Our Trader Joe's opened Friday and I went for the first time yesterday on my way home from the Animal Shelter.  The Open House at the AS was nice.  Lots of people - free hot dogs and chips and shaved ice. I had fritos and shaved ice.  Considering how hot it was the turn out was pretty good.  Some of the dogs got applications taken on them - so hopefully they will be finding a forever home soon.  There is one full-blooded bloodhound there - female about a year old.  She is so sweet.

We are having dinner with friends tonight.  I am having ginger sesame salmon, squash casserole, brussel sprouts and mushrooms and corn on the cob.

Big eating tonight - back to the routine tomorrow.

I must exercise some other way if I cannot cycle!  My body is calling for it.

Progress as of today: 13.6 lbs lost so far, only 14.4 lbs to go!
