(Healthy Eating and Exercise)
Weight: 164.4

Rode 12.8 miles last night.  My friend rode 8.6 miles!  I encouraged her to do two more loops on the little route we do together and she couldn't believe it.  Next week we are going to try the Shillito Park paved trail that is closed to traffic.  I will transport the bikes there instead of riding there and we'll see how she likes that.  I have another route picked out for her where we can do loops here in the neighborhood but there is one big uphill.   I think it will be worth it to her because there is more variety of where we can ride once she gets up that.  So she might just have to deal with it -Hahahahaha.  Right now the loop we are doing is pretty short and not too steep - just a couple of long inclined grades.

I'm gonna have to ride early on Saturday because I volunteered with the Humane Society Adoption program at the PetSmart store in my neighborhood.  It's a good cause.  Love seeing all the puppies.

More later folks.

B:  Iced Van coffee, 2 squares of dark chili chocolate

L:  Hot dog w. mustard, diet coke veggie straws (not the greatest, but...)

S:  2 squares of dark chili choc

D:  Will be Mexican Pot Roast, carrots and mexican slaw

Progress as of today: 13.6 lbs lost so far, only 14.4 lbs to go!

That's awesome that your friend is doing so well. Aww, you're going to have so much fun with the pups on Saturday, very cool!

sweetpea1977 on 05/17/2012:
Yay for your friend!! Good job on your biking too. :)

grannyannie on 05/17/2012:
Good job on the bike! I told my spin bike instructor that I intended to be able to pedal all the way up this very steep hill a few miles from our house. She thought that an impressive goal.

My hub likes the wild water in his kayak, I like calm. He has a whitewater kayak but I don't have a kayak - prefer sea kayaks - heavy, wide and stable. We do have a big canoe though which we haven't used in a long time. We can take it just across the road and put it in the loch, but it can get rough out there. Sometimes hub takes his kayak out.

V on 05/17/2012:
You are such a positive inspiration to your friend! That is so awesome Holly <3 I hope you have a good evening!

nunnermack on 05/17/2012:
So nice that you do the volunteer work for the animals. I love all creatures but it would be so hard for me emotionally. My house would be filled with orphaned pets if I worked there!! I applaud you!!

Reposting my ride post from last night:

5/15/2012 started keeping bona fide statistics tonight on a steno pad-

Out 6:38 p.m. Back 7:31 p.m. = 53 minutes

Odo Start: 224.8 Odo End: 239.3 = 14.5 Mi = 16.4 MPH

Ride Details - One Medium Long Traffic Stop Light, one stop to stretch shoulders, one stop for a runner with a dog that ran out in front of me - almost hit the dog, but runner pulled his leash in the nick of time. When I braked suddenly curled my toes and got cramps in both feet! All is well! I didn't subtract these stops out of the time - it's in there.

Was happy with the ride and did good on food choices.

B:  Two LF Whole Grain Wafles with jam and coffee

L:  Subway tuna sun chips and zero vit water

S:  almonds, 2 squares dark chili choc

D: 1 healthy deviled egg so far

Church tonight and bike ride with friend + my own ride to =  minimum 12 miles

UPDATE:

Rode 12.8 miles tonight - two nights to go at 12 miles and the the weekend 20!

Odo Start:  239.3 Odo End:  252.1

My friend rode 8.3 miles!  This was my recovey ride night so I didn't calculate mph.

Progress as of today: 13.6 lbs lost so far, only 14.4 lbs to go!

thenewMLE on 05/16/2012:
Awesome ride!!! I've only had to jump off my bike once for toe cramp in one foot, but my right foot always falls asleep around the 45 minute mark. Hubby tells me to wiggle my toes, but that's how the toe cramp started that time and I am afraid to wiggle my toes!!! I love to see the dogs on the route, but once we had one not on a leash biting at hubby's legs - that made me nervous. Do you have an iphone? We got an app that turns on the GPS and not only tracks time and route, but average speed and keeps monthly and weekly totals. I bought a phone holder that sits on my handlebars. It also starts my workout play list and I can hear my music without having to put in ear buds. Keep up your rides, I'm happy for you!

V on 05/16/2012:
Wheww thankfully the dog didn't cause a collision.. Great job on the ride Holly, stay safe out there <3

Umpqua on 05/16/2012:
I'm glad you avoided a collision. You are doing excellent work with your rides, so consistent!

Weight: 164.4

Goals this week: 80 miles on the bike!  12 miles Monday - Friday and 20 miles on Saturday or Sunday.  Eat reasonably well.

Check out yesterday's update.  Food was OK -  I got my 12 miles on the bike in!  Yay!  It was like this:  6 miles as fast as I could to get back to my house to meet my biking friend and 6 miles with her at a more leisurely pace.  On the first fast 6 miles I mounted three (count 'em-3) BIG old LONG hills.  I notice that I am standing up alot more in general on my rides and it is empowering to do so.  I only averaged 12 mph on the first 6 miles, but that was probably because of the big long hills :-)  I am starting to ride more like those bikers I see that I envy!  And....I love my new Craft Bibs!

I "feel" more toned and the white burmuda shorts I put on today are the same ones I wore Sunday and they are definitely looser.  I was uncomfortable in them all day Sunday.  They aren't stretchy at all.  Trying to stay positive - I can do this - I can be in my size 10s comfortably again!

B:  Banana and SF Van iced coffee

L:  Tomato Basil soup and 2 helpings of oriental Chicken salad at Applebees with daughter

D:  Fruit and avocado smoothie - really didn't want more

Bike ride - started keeping bona fide statistics tonight on a steno pad-

Out 6:38 p.m. Back 7:31 p.m. = 53 minutes

Odo Start:  224.8  Odo End:  239.3 = 14.5 Mi = 16.4 MPH

Ride Details - One Medium Long Traffic Stop Light, one stop to stretch shoulders, one stop for a runner with a dog that ran out in front of me -  almost hit the dog, but runner pulled his leash in the nick of time.  When I braked suddenly curled my toes and got cramps in both feet!  All is well!  I didn't subtract these stops out of the time - it's in there.

thenewMLE on 05/15/2012:
GO GIRL!!!! Love those looser shorts! I love your biking plan! That's similar to what we did last week and are trying again for this week. I'm glad you like your bib. It doesn't make you too hot? I wish I could stand up, maybe one day I will. My legs are still recuperating from Saturday's spin class. Think of your split ride as some HIIT training. It's nice that your friend is enjoying riding with you. YOU CAN POSITIVELY DO THIS! (and I mean that both ways!)

sweetpea1977 on 05/15/2012:
Nice biking goal. I cant wait for the boys to be old enough for long bike rides! It was something my mom and dad loved doing with us when we were kids. :)

Congrats on the loose shorts!

thenewMLE on 05/15/2012:
I haven't been able to ride much faster than 13 mph, not that I have really pushed it to go much faster, but we have gone from riding an hour to an hour and a half after work so we are covering from 13 to 18 miles per night and I feel really good. That is after getting up at 5am to be at work for 6:45 and working until 4:30 and getting home for 5pm. We ride between 6 and 7:30. So for the 5 work days last week we put in 75 miles and on Sunday we did 22 more. So your goal is very achievable even more so because you are a seasoned rider! I read that if you ride at 13 mph for an hour I should get a productive caloric burn and that's what I was looking for! But I know I don't have to remind you to eat enough calories to support that kind of burn. Good Luck!!!

Umpqua on 05/15/2012:
You are kicking some serious booty! Seriously, I think you are doing great and I'm sure you're toning the lower bod big time. Oh and I haven't had time to get back to the wall project yet - trying to fit it in!

I am so proud of you holly, you are building up great muscles there. Oh! and by the way! I didn't know that you were riding IN TRAFFIC, now I am worried about you. I am a worrier:( You be careful young lady!!

moogy on 05/15/2012:
See! I knew there was reason to worry!!! LOL

selina on 05/15/2012:
12 miles on the bike is amazing! I haven't heard from the bike people, yet... they told me 1.5 to 2 weeks. tomorrow is going to be 2 weeks, so I'll be stopping by the shop before I hit the gym (bike shop is across the street from gym)

nunnermack on 05/15/2012:
Wow!! That is great!! I know what you mean about envying the bikers that you see. I do too. I really should start myself but I'm so afraid of getting hit by a car. Is it busy where you ride? I need someone like you to ride with. Hate to go by myself. : (

thinkpositive on 05/16/2012:
Whoa! Love hearing about your bike rides. I love to ride my bike but mine is a real old lady cruiser bike! But there is nothing like moving along on a bike trail. Great that you're feeling your clothes get looser.

Yay!  I actually had a good weekend on Mother's Day weekend!  That may not sound like much to some of my fellow DDers, but believe me, it's a big deal. The main accomplishment is that my Mom and I had a nice 3.5-4 hours together.  We went to late lunch/early dinner and I made one of her favorite desserts (Hummingbird Cake-not to worry it went in husband's car as soon as I got home last night and it's gone to work with him today).  She is such a difficult person to be around, but she was OK yesterday and we had a nice time.  The food was good, which helped.  I think I have mentioned that she has lost a lot of weight since Dad died.  She needs new clothes but won't go shopping.  She has some smaller clothes that she can wear, but needs more.  I can see that she is making an effort to get along better lately.  It is encouraging.  I know this sounds strange to some of you who have better realtionships with your mothers - sorry - but this is the way it is for me.  Basically I do the best I can with what I have to work with.  But I am so grateful that at least yesterday was good.

I did eat whatever I wanted yesterday.  That didn't amount to that much-mostly a big piece of cake and some wonderful bread and butter.  It rained literally the whole day.  Sometimes it was just a hard fine mist, but all day.  So no bike ride on Sunday.  I plan to make up for it this week.  It is supposed to be mid 70s until then Sat and Sun then mid 80s!!!  So early weekend rides will be in order.

More later, people!  :o)

7 miles intense biking avg 14 mph and 6 miles slower steady pace  avg 6 mph with friend.  She is doing so well.  She told me she  has stopped going to McD's in the a.m. for her Large Coke.  She takes Milos unsweetened tea with her to work and has that with stevia.  She is grilling or otherwise cooking lots of chicken breast on the weekend and has those  and for vegetables instead of fast food for lunch.  Big changes.  I noticed today she had a new pair of knit shorts on.  Very cool.

My foods today:  Iced coffee in the a.m., 2 beef short ribs - left over from yesterday's lunch.  Banana, 12 almonds.......dinner in a minute - not sure what.....UPDATE - dinner was 1/2 sweet potato and a mango and 1/2 a pnb and honey, tea

Progress as of today: 13.6 lbs lost so far, only 14.4 lbs to go!

thenewMLE on 05/14/2012:
I'm so glad you had a great Mother's Day!!! Sometimes it is the simple pleasure of a drama free day that can be so rewarding. And maybe Mom sensed your joy and it could reinforce a good pattern of behavior for her. Enjoy your bike rides this week while it's still cool!

V on 05/14/2012:
Hey there Holly :) So happy to hear that you had a wonderful time with your Mom <3 Okay i have to ask, what's a hummingbird cake?? LOL

liza36 on 05/14/2012:
I'm glad you were able to spend some time with your mom and that it went well.

I should have brought my leftover dessert to work too. It's sitting in my fridge at home, which is dangerous!

Umpqua on 05/14/2012:
I'm glad you had a nice Mother's Day and you and your Mom were able to get along. I completely understand, my relationship with my own Mother is difficult and I'm trying my best to work out a way to have her in my life while also keeping her at arm's length for my own self preservation and the sanity of my family. Not easy ;) It helps that she's 3,000 miles away and we only speak once or twice a month. It's unfortunate that I've had to sacrifice a relationship with my Father as well since he has chosen to support her behavior at the cost of his siblings and me and my family. Anyway, it's nice to hear that you are able to keep things civil with your Mom and that encourages me that we can continue on this path and hopefully avoid future blow ups!

Hummingbird Cake is DELICIOUS, great work sending it away with your hubby haha!

supercheese on 05/14/2012:
oh zachs fine now lol. probably eating fried food and burgers as we speak lol. He needed to be under a certain weight for his promotion, but he got it :) so happy you had a lovely mothers day!!

grannyannie on 05/14/2012:
Glad your mother's day was nice and better than you expected. You're not the only person who has a difficult mother. I've know many with one.

Enjoy your week. Good job giving away the rest of the cake.

grannyannie on 05/14/2012:
And, yes, what is a hummingbird cake?

sweetpea1977 on 05/14/2012:
My relationship with my dad became very strained after my mom passed away so I can understand how having a good day with a difficult parent is a rare and beautiful moment.

Good work on sending off the hummingbird cake!!

grannyannie on 05/14/2012:
Yum, cake sounds delish! A cake I love is a very high fat carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Seriously high cal!

moogy on 05/14/2012:
When you get to our age Holly we have figured out that we need to just work around people that we HAVE to be around and just avoid those who we CAN avoid!!! RYC: I went back and read your comment, how lovely to give a little inspiration:) I would be an apple in a riding outfit!!!! LOL

nunnermack on 05/14/2012:
Glad to hear things went well on Mother's Day. I've heard of hummingbird cake but don't think I've ever had it. Sounds interesting.

(Healthy Eating and Exercise)

18 miles last night, although the last 4 were slow as rode with my friend.  She has increased her distance.  She says it makes her happy which makes me feel the same way!  On the first 14 miles I averaged around 14 mph (maybe a little better as there were two really really long stop lights at major intersections).  I can tell I am buildnig muscle all over.  Not really gettng smaller anywhere though - but I'll take what I get.  I will trust my body to do what it needs to do.

While I was riding I was put in mind of a comment Moogy made to me the other day.  She said she bet my core was getting a good work out riding my bike.  As I was riding yesterday I thought yes, it certainly is - especially when I hold it in really really hard while crossing intersections in front of drivers in cars, etc.  Kind of like a guy with a big belly on the beach when a pretty girl walks by!  LOL  Thanks for the inspiration, Moogy!  I must say I think I rather resemble a sausage in my riding gear, but it's all good.  I got my new Craft bibs and they are FANTASTIC!  Worth every penny.  I need one more shirt.  I want a sleeveless one (not a tank - too bare) so I can get sun on the upper arms.  I am getting a "farmer" tan. I tried to even it out with the self-tanning stuff called Sublime.  It works really well and i've used it for years.  I don't want to tan too much at all since I had skin cancer two years ago.  I also got some really nice 85% sun block that is a spray mist, no scent, drys really quickly and feels CLEAN!  Happy about that because most sun block lotions make me feel "icky".

Well, I'm off to get ready to go to Cincinnati.  More later this weekend guys.

Progress as of today: 13.6 lbs lost so far, only 14.4 lbs to go!

grannyannie on 05/12/2012:
Good job on the bike rides. Enjoyable as well. If you can feel that you are building muscle that's great.

What is the brand of sunblock you use that has no scent? I need to get some when we come over to visit and I'm allergic to anything perfumey.

nunnermack on 05/12/2012:
Ha, ha! Loved your post. I know about the bike riding gear...the only way I would wear those bike shorts would be if I were allowed to wear control panty hose and Spanx underneath!! I don't think I will ever feel comfortable in them!! I wore them when I was 135 and I thought I was fat!! (I was SO silly!!)

That's so great that you are inspiring your friend to bike with you. Also, that's great on the body muscle!!!

Enjoy your day!

Rode about 10 miles on the bike last night - stayed within healthy eating guidelines.  I don't understand why I am not losing weight.  If anything I swear my middle is getting thicker!

Sigh.....

Tonight - more bike ride and some flower planting if it's not raining.

Ordered new cycling bib shorts.  I like to ones I have, but I need a second pair for then they are in the wash.  The chamois in the spare pair of cycling shorts is totally SHOT - no cushion left at all.  Happy Mother's Day to me!

Oh, and the altril is working pretty well.  I have slept more in the last 5 days than not slept and at appropriate time (bedtime/nighttime!!).  This is not a minor miracle.

Ethan is doing well! He is currently flying around the house as Batman (his favorite superhero). :) Yay for good sleep!!!

How many calories have you been taking in? Is it possible that you're not getting enough? You've been doing lots of long bike rides lately, which burns a lot of calories. Try using this calculator to see an estimate of your daily calorie burn as well as advice to determine your intake goal: http://calorieneedscalculator.com/

I checked mine and compared it to my armband's calculations and both have similar budgets for me: 2100calories/day for me to lose weight.

moogy on 05/08/2012:
I was thinking that you use your core quite a lot during riding and you may well be building muscle around your middle! Is your current weight within your ideal weight range? Sweetpea has a point as well:)

Monday!!!!  It's going up to 84 today - on May 7th!  Unbelieveable!

Check out the post about my bike ride yesterday - not much else to report all weekend, except housework and laundry and some weeding at Mom's house.

Later.....

My friend came to ride again tonight.  I am impressed she is sticking with it.  She said she was in the middle of a yard project and told her husband she was going to come over and ride the bike and he said what?  Right in the middle of this project and she said it is non-negotiable.  Her knee is feeling better an she enjoys it!  She rode 3.5 miles and I rode about 7 more and came home.

Progress as of today: 13.6 lbs lost so far, only 14.4 lbs to go!

thenewMLE on 05/07/2012:
WOW! That's a great ride!!! I am averaging only 13 MPH but we keep extending our distance. The zoo ride of 22 miles is still my farthest but we have done it 5 times now and it gets easier every time. I'm glad you finally got your saddle troubles solved. Did you get that one that we talked about that came on my Trek bike or did you find something else? I'm excited about my riding skirt. Back in February when you told me to find the padded biking pants, I found a "skort" at the bike shop and they were 50% off. Long story short, they only had one extra large and the colors were gross and the legs didn't have much compression so I wanted to get a large. They didn't have any on sale so my hubby hands me a medium! I've NEVER been a medium anything in my life. He told me that the legs should have enough compression and they are spandex so just try it. Well it was a battle to get them on. My back fat hung over the top and the skirt was at the very end of the strap that hooks it but he said get it and as you work out, it will fit better. I can't ever walk away from a bargain so I took the medium skirt that I have worn on every ride. Now there is no back fat to hang over and the skirt strap hangs much looser and I about ready to tighten it a little!! But the point is, that investment in the padded bike skort I think saved my butt because I have not had any saddle soreness at all. I'm glad you are feeling better and shooting for those longer rides. I wish you lived closer....

Good job on the bike riding!! And, glad to hear you aren't having any saddle problems. I know sometimes when I get off the bike the private parts are...well...very numb. Gheesh. Keep up the good work!!!!

The swimsuits were a nightmare but I know I could have found some dresses that fit nicely. I just hated the colours and patterns. Yuck! (or the pricetag).

RE the Brazil classes, you probably already know that there are different programs/schedules based on your butt goals haha. I'm doing the shape and lift for flat or square butts :P but there are several different variations depending on your goals. Yesterday's class was no joke, it gets the job done!

No time to post or update last entry, but want to stop by to say hello and that I got in a 18+ mile ride today.  I rode the first 16 miles in right at an hour and 5 minutes with three LONG stop light stops so I'd say I was averaging 16 mph easy.  I took the last two miles slower to chill on the way home.  No saddle troubles.  It was really HOT!  No doubt I could not keep up the 16 mph pace over 32 miles, but I KNOW I could ride 32 miles if I was pacing myself!  Want to ride the dirt trails tonight for about 45 min, but Im still working on laundry.

I also pulled weeds at mother's house for about an hour.  She wont pay the yard people to do it (although she can absolutely afford it), she'll come around, I think.  She is just having a hard time adjusting to the fact that dad isn't there to do it anymore.  She has a hugh yard.

More this week.......

Progress as of today: 13.6 lbs lost so far, only 14.4 lbs to go!

Updated yesterday - junk food day!  Didn't get home until 8 p.m. and tired so no exercise.

Took 2 Ateril again last night and slept through the night until husband started SNORING around 3:00  as usual. Kinid of went back to sleep through some of it for a couple of hours went to the couch at around 5:15 - too early to get up all the way and slept fairly well there.  I still got approximately 7 hours of semi sound sleep which is better than usual.

After reading your entries of bike rides, I decided to take my old bike in for reconditioning - it's going to be ready in one week! I'm changing the tires (they were cracking), the seat is going to be an extra wide one, with gel (yay for high comfort technology) and the "clunk" noise that I heard each time I pedaled is gone as the guy fixed the loose chain. I've had the bike for nearly 25 years, used it a lot in Japan for commuting to the university and used it a lot for recreation in Switzerland. I love my bike!

Have a great day and weekend! I hope your hubby can do something about his snoring... IMO, having separate bedrooms is a great idea. You can always have rendezvous whenever and as often as you please and aside from that, have a good sleep, too. Just an idea ;)

I will ask my dad if he can fix it. I'll have to pay for parts so it will be at least another week. That's when I get paid.

I was pretty happy with the hard seat that came with my bike when I bought it, but it broke and fell apart when I was trying to move the seat up/down. As I was looking for a replacement at the bike shop, I just chose the best quality available (it cost me 50+ dollars) and I hope it will last me a looooong time. I don't plan to go off bike paths and asphalt, so the tires are also for that purpose. It's a Japanese made bike, it cost me a small fortune when I first bought it here in the US about 25 years ago (one of the first bikes with over 20 gears) and I still like it - I can go up any hill while still sitting. I'll probably use is to go plein aire painting when I move this summer, so I should buy those bags that go on the back/sides.

Sorry your hubby woke you out of a decent slumber, he must have been pretty loud unless you are a light sleeper like me.. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

thenewmle on 05/05/2012:
Glad the Ateril is helping!! I can relate to the snoring waking you, except with us, it's the dog!! Neither my husband nor me snore, but the boxer snores LOUdlY!! And if you shove on her, she gets louder!! Glad your riding buddy is enjoying the rides. Have a great weekend!!!
