UPDATE:  Hospice nurse came to evaluate dad.  I was so HAPPY she came right way!   She changed up his medication and upped the oxygen and he appeared to do a little better.  He ate 1/2 a pimento cheese sandwich and was breathing easier.  I was able to change the sheets on his bed, run the vaccum and dust and clean his bathroom a little bit, organize his clean clothes and take out the recycling and garbage cans for pick up.  Would have done more, but mom wanted me to leave, so I did.  Was there about 2.5 hours.  They are going to see about getting him in the hospital tomorrow to remove the fluid build up in his abdomen.  Once that is done he should feel better for awhile.  We will see.  They are going to hire a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to come at least a couple of half days to start with to help.  Mom wll work on that tomorrow.  I suggested they have  someone come something like noon to 4 or 5 to begin with and add more days later as needed.       

Spent 5 hours at Mom and Dad's yesterday.  Dad is going downhill.  So sad.  Sorry no great news here.  I am taking a break for everything and trying to figure out how to help them.  The Hospice people are really no help. They have 4 nurses for 300 patients.  Dad needs to evaluated, but they can't say when they will come over to do that.  M & D need home health but it's not been talked about and the doc has to write the order for it.  I don't really have an appetite right now.  Things need to change soon-for the better.

I am so sorry you are going through this, Holly. I lost my Dad at a young age (he was killed by a drunk driver) and I took care of my Mom for many years and ended up having to quit working (an outside regular job) to do so. Even at the nursing home where Mom is now, they are EXTREMELY shorthanded. I will pray for your parents and for you and your family as well. Love, Maria

I'm sorry you're going through a hard time right now. Care aides seem to be in short supply these days, with the numbers of residents in care homes rising. Don't wear yourself out, and you tell your Mom not to either. I've seen that far too often; the wife begins to go downhill faster than the ailing husband because she's dealing with the emotional aspects of it all. I hope things start to look up for you soon!

No walk last night - wrapped some of husband's work gifts - mostly books and wine and chilled on the couch.  Calories were up yesterday, too - probably around 2000.  I am going to do better today.

 I always say I will be mindful - and I am, but I am mindfully eating too much.  Not totally wack-o stuff, just too much.  I am having a difficult time because of the emotions involved in what is going on with my mom and dad, but I don't wan to use that as an excuse to just throw everything to the wind and not live a healthy life.  I'll figure it out.  I'm working on it.

This time of year is so easy to go overboard on the portions. I'm experiencing it myself. Holidays, stress, family issues all can play into it. It's good that you're mindful. That's really the first step. Have a great day!

I think you are doing a great job too Holly! As far as shifts, I am not scheduled inside ever but if i really need to make cash, I can pick up a shift inside with no problem(lots of unmotivated people) when the weather takes a turn..Have a good evening :)

Walked 3 miles with husband and dogs last night.  Can't believe we had 65 degree weather here yesterday - on December 14th!  It is raining today and this will bring our annual rain total to a RECORD BREAKING YEAR for rain.  The record was back in the late 1880's.  I believe it because the grass is still green in December.  It's been remarkable.

Calories yesterday were around 1800.

We still have semi-green grass, which is crazy for up here this time of year. I'm waiting patiently for the big snows to start :) Gotta get my skis sharpened! Great job on the exercise Holly!!

It has been unseasonably warm here too, last year at this time, i maybe worked 1 shift a week because it was too cold!

Spent several hours with Dad while Mom went to doc yesterday.  So happy for flexible Employer!

Last night husband and I ate at a West African restaurant - I had purchased $8 for $16 on Living Social because I had wanted to check it out.  It was so-so.  I will probably go back sometime, but not soon.  Husband didn't like his food at all.  Best bet was the meat and salad - not the other sides.  Wasn't a matter of not liking W African cuisine, quality wasn't there.  Nothing ventured nothing gain, though so it was worth a try.

Came home after that and walked 2 miles.  Slept pretty well.

Ate "OK" not great no terrible - probably 1800 calories.

Last night's party went OK.  I overate a bit, but as a result I am not tempted IN THE LEAST today.  My new khaki skirt which was too tight two weeks ago fits just fine (and I do mean JUST) today and I am optomistic I will be able to exercise tonight.  I am going to try very hard to have the energy!  We had baked chicken breasts - the same recipe that I make at home a couple of weeks ago for us and Mom and Dad and asparagus and a congealed salad and bread.  I skipped the salad and bread.  I did have a big piece of the coconut cake I brought and I tried some of the peanut brittle that the hostess' husband had made.   

Walked 2 miles with husband and doggies.

Hey congrats on the skirt fitting! That's exciting to be able to see those kinds of changes and progress! I wanted to thank you for the links you sent for the food allergies for my daughter- I hadn't seen them in my web "travels", and the cookingallergyfree.com is RAD! I can save all her allergies and it customizes the recipe search so it filters those out recipes with ingredients she's allergic to. This site is going to be GREAT for her, and I'm SO excited that you told me about it!! THANKS!

Yesterday I wound up doing other things around the house and NOT getting on the ET!  Is anyone surprised?  I have been doing that a lot lately!  I must make a a priority and keep an "appointment" with myself......I'll try that.  

I did fine with food yesterday - no sweets, except for a granola bar and no snacking at all - no overeating.  I feel much more in control and not like I'm going off the deep end.

Today is a diet challenge (another one) - I have Christmas Dinner with the "Wednesday Night Church Ladies" group.  My plan is to eat lightly the rest of the day - without being too hungry and have a small snack before I go.  I am taking the dessert - it's not as bad as it could be, I suppose - I make a cake and the icing is made of LIGHT sour cream and LIGHT Cool Whip and sugar and coconut.  I will have a small piece tonight, bring a piece for husband and send the rest home with others.  

I don't know if I told you all or not, but husband and I applied for new life insurance policy - our old policy rate had gone up very high and we had to have blood work as a part of the application process.  The company sent the result of the lab work to us - Husband's BP was a bit high - this has been the case for about 3-4 years - borderline - no medications   My lab work was all fine, though - cholestrol was a little higher than it's been before but on the LOWER side of the normal range.  I was very happy about that, at least.  We got a rate that is $110 less than we are paying NOW, much less lower than the new premium the current carrier was offering - so needless to say we will be moving to the new company.

Awesome news on the life insurance! I know what you mean about the exercise, with working from home it's especially tough for me. There are always chores and other things that need doing to distract me. I have to set a mental appointment to get it done and sometimes I will even set an alarm on my laptop. Have a good one!

re: hidrocycle @all you can eat restaurant. You should see the badminton guys, all above 50+ and they go to the "Rodízio" (brasilian all-you-can-eat meats) and eat only the fattest, dripping fat literally!, unhealthiest stuff. And during the training they would eat whole bars of chocolates, as I witnessed. And they are all thin as a rake, lol...

Hi guys.  I did "OK" yesterday as I endulged in a little bit of unhealthy food in the middle of the day, but only ate a granola bar for dinner.  It evened out - I walked for almost 6 hours straight......at the mall (yuck).  I really don't like shopping all that much.  I did purchase three gifts - small ones and I bought a sweater vest and coordinating top for myself at 65% off at Macy's.  Now I need new jewelry to go with it!  Ha-ha! It's sunny and cold here - I am going to put up the wrapping paper and go downstairs and get on the ET.  I am afraid to walk outside right now as I have had an ear ache for last several days.....slight sinus infection.

Going shopping with my girlfriend at 8:30 this morning. 

True confessions - I had "cookie binge" yesterday.  Ate about 15 cookies!  Yup, I did.  Heres the strange thing - someone had given our agency a cookie jar for Christmas (Insurance Companies do this kind of thing) and it had good cookies in it - I only had one in a whole week of the good, gifted cookies.  When they were all gone someone asked me to get some cookies to put in the jar to have on hand when I went out to run some errands.  I thought - OK I'll get some cookies I don't like so I won't be tempted.  So I got some I didn't like, but I tried one anyway.  Well, it snow balled from there.   Now, I don't usually have a problem with binges, I have to watch out really carefully with sweets and I have what I will call mini-binges once in a while on certain things, but never like this.  Not sure why.  Anxiety and frustration, discontent - can you say emotional eating???  I do know why that's why, but no excuse.  I have better control than this and I want to do better for myself than this - for goodness sake!  So today I am starting with my old reliable oatmeal, 1/2 banana, almonds and a  little brown sugar.  Good stuff the rest of the day and for the next week.  More exercise, too.

I did well on food last night.  I didn't eat that much for dinner - about 1/4 of a left over chop and a dab of asian salad - husband gobbled it all up - hee-hee - no one told him the whole container was 3.5 servings!  There was about 1/4 C left over for me.

Yay for cleaning! You should find the chocolate grahams next to the regular ones. I actually have them in the house for cheesecake and pie crusts :P It hadn't occurred to me that they'd make a great snack.
