Weight: 177.0

Hello fellow DD buddies!  It's been awhile. My summer has been challenging and am still unable to walk without assistance. Next week I'll be getting an Injection under Fluoroscopy.  So, we'll see what happens.

I've been able to keep my calories under 850/day and have lost 2 more pounds.  Sure is slow coming off!

Here are some end of summer pictures I'd like to share.    Black-Eyed Susan, Pink Mum (Aster), Maple tree in our front yard.

Progress as of today: 15 lbs lost so far, only 52 lbs to go!

horn_of_plenty on 10/06/2017:
What absolutely beautiful photos :-)

Thank you for sharing and also educating me on the types...love the bright colors of that maple tree!

I hope you feel much better soon....keep up the good work on your diet. i hope you can eat lots of veg to fill you...like cabbage, vegetable soups, even omg a nice pork with cabbage (light on the pork of course, very light!)...i forget if you eat meat!

jabockov on 10/06/2017:
I hope the injection works too, so I can get back to walking again. The maple tree is said to be the prettiest tree on the block, especially during the fall. I love soup! I do eat meat, but don't really care for it. Chicken and fish are my favorites. I love vegetables and am always looking for new recipes. Just made Zucchini Boats, delicious! Thank you for all the positive vibes!

bearcountrygg on 10/06/2017:
Hi....You have such a green thumb...the pictures are beautiful. Will be thinking of you and hoping that your injection helps a lot!

jabockov on 10/06/2017:
Thank you for all the well wishes and I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures.

Horn_of_plenty on 10/06/2017:
zucchini boats sounds super goooood!

also, look how nice your weight chart looks, you've been losing and doing so well! you've lost a nice amount from when you started! that's a rockstar!

Donkey on 10/07/2017:
I too hope that the injection works. Are you frustrated? Or accepting and reconciled? I've been struggling with my own back problems and I'm still in the frustrated category.

Absolutely love your pictures!

Thanks for all the positive comments about the gardens.  The cream color house with the dark blue trim is my neighbor's house.  I'll have to dig through my pics to see if I can find a nice one of our house which is country blue with white trim.  I'm in the process of repainting all the deck railings.

On a positive note, I lost two pounds in the last month. I have had to reduce my calories to keep under 850 a day due to my inactivity.

My MRI results are finally back and show four bulging discs and some arthritic degeneration along the entire spine.  Looks like a life change is in the works.  Meanwhile, I get to take a lot of pain meds and do daily physical therapy.  I have heard that the McKenzie Method has shown good results. Anyone else have any good suggestions?  I saw that someone suggested Tiger Balm for back issues.   I'll have to see if I can find some and try that.

Meanwhile, I have a picture to share.  Fall is near when the climbing vine turns red.  The Pink Mum and Black-Eyed Susan are in full bloom.  I didn't notice until after I had taken the picture that the shovel handle got in there.  Oh well, it is a garden!

Progress as of today: 13 lbs lost so far, only 54 lbs to go!

bearcountrygg on 09/13/2017:
Beautiful Pic...I also have bulging discs, crumbling vertebre and spinal bone spurs....lots of pain for sure...I just ordered the tiers balm from amazon...but it hasn't arrived yet...Looking forward to using it.

jabockov on 09/14/2017:
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the pic. How long have you had back issues? Have you looked into North American Spine? Our insurance wouldn't cover them, so I've had to seek other ways to deal with it. I shop Amazon all the time. I'll add the Balm to my next order, thanks. Have a great day!

horn_of_plenty on 09/14/2017:
Hiiii Jabby!

You are so welcome about the comments on your gardens ! You put so much care into them and it shows. I’d love to see your house when you are done with the renovations.

Congrats on losing a pound. Even though you are inactive, remember that 1200 cals is also good for inactivity – but of course you know your body best and everyone is different so your count and your calories may work for you! And that is obviously a great thing – especially seeing you lost two pounds which is fabulous!

Definitely do preventative measure and stretching and what is recommended as far as the meds and exercise is concerned. Take care of yourself so you can prevent it getting worse. I am sorry you have to deal with pain – I know how that feels and the addition of pain in a person’s life can be really, really a struggle I do know. Feel better…

Loving your photos…thank you for putting them up so that I can see something pretty during my workday!

It's cool looking with the dark red and in the center the bright pink and yellow. Almost looking like a wreath with a center of bright color. very beautiful!

jabockov on 09/14/2017:
Thanks for all the affirmations! If I were 5' 6", or taller, 1200 calories per day would be about right. But when you're only a little over 5' the need for calories is a lot less. So, I have to be very careful. I'm glad you're enjoying the pictures. I love to share them. Have a great day.

bearcountrygg on 09/14/2017:
To answer your question my back and neck problems started about 20 years ago....I have never looked into North American Spine...I just deal with it...Tylenol has become a good friend....so have heating pads and Blue Emu in the navy and yellow can. I'm looking forward to the Tiger Balm delivery. I also find that pillows make a difference...Mine need to have good neck support. I'm not suggesting this to anyone...but probably 15years ago or so.I slowly weaned myself off of all of my meds which were for ( low thyroid, blood pressure, high cholesterol and asthma inhalers...I keep an old rescue inhaler just for an emergency but found that coffee works well too)...which is funny because I was a medical secretary for a very large and busy medical office that was open 24 hours a day. I dealt with drug reps day in and day out...and I made a personal decision to eliminate all prescription drugs from my life...it took me 8 or 9 months to wean off all of them..and I have been just fine since...although lately the jury duty raised my blood pressure...and I am dealing with that with stress management, low salt diet and I've dropped the caffeine at least for now. But you sound like you may have more pain than I do...I have pain...but I guess I have become accustomed to it...and work around it without thinking about it too much...Hope you feel better.

jabockov on 09/14/2017:
I also worked in the medical/clerical field! We seem to be more and more alike. Are you sure you're not a long lost sibling? My back problems also started about 20 year ago. I suppose it had something to do with building my rock gardens and moving all the rocks by hand. I stopped my blood pressure meds because they made me so sick and decided to diet instead and it worked. I do take antihistamines every day, but I haven't had to use my inhaler for months. I just ordered some Tiger Balm but it won't be here until Oct. What is Blue Emu? I'll have to investigate. Have a great day.

bearcountrygg on 09/15/2017:
That is so funny.....we sound like twins...LOL...Blue emu is a spray for sore muscles...I had a bit of trouble finding it..and I can't remember now where I did get it...You just spray it on and rub in...it really does help me...I mainly use it at night if I am having pain that affects sleep. I will see if I can find the blue emu spray online....Take care

bearcountrygg on 09/15/2017:
I added a pic of the blue emu spray to my diary..I see that Walmart and walgreens sells it...I believe I paid about $9 for it...on amazon they are asking outrageous prices to as much as $55...and as low as $16........but the can I have is basically used occasionally for an easier nights sleep...and it's lasting very well...about 8 or 9 months so far for the can and sill going...and has worked amazingly well for me.

Donkey on 09/23/2017:
A "life-change"... I'm so sorry. :-(

(Eat Mindfully, Move My Body)
Weight: 181.0

It's been a few weeks, but here's an update.  I haven't been able to do very much lately due to sciatic nerve and back pain.  Maintaining my weight loss has been difficult since I'm not getting as much exercise.  Waiting for my MRI results to see if the issue can be resolved.

Peas and beans in the garden are pretty much done and the tomatoes are ripening on the vine, yum.  I miss having the fresh kale and spinach, but those are done also.

The flowers are still lovely, though.  Here's some............

Progress as of today: 11 lbs lost so far, only 56 lbs to go!

bearcountrygg on 08/30/2017:
Your flowers are beautiful!

horn_of_plenty on 08/30/2017:
I also love your house! It's so pretty with the pale yellow and pretty blue perimeter ! So cute!

Flowers look beautiful! Do you have indoor herbs?

Donkey on 09/02/2017:
Beautiful flowers! Your yard is a work of art. I'm so sorry about your back pain though. I hope it CAN be resolved. I have had bad bouts of sciatica when the L4-5 disc decides it wants to bulge out a bit. The bulge is so small it's hard to see on the scans, but WOW is it bothersome, painful, and inconvenient.

Hang in there!!!

Weight: 181.0

Been up and down with my weight for the past few weeks.  I seem to be retaining water, pitting edema in my legs, so it's hard to tell if weight is coming off.  I'm keeping my calories around 900 per day, which seems to be ok for my 5' frame.  Gardening and painting the deck railings are keeping me busy.

I love how tall my green beans have grown!

Progress as of today: 11 lbs lost so far, only 56 lbs to go!

Horn_of_plenty on 08/07/2017:
how did you get the edema? is that from lack of physical activity (i doubt it since you are always gardening and that is not inactive, that's for sure!).

Your garden looks beautiful! It shows you've spent time and dedication with it. Your love shines thru and the plants look wonderful!

jabockov on 08/08/2017:
My heart has some damage, so occasionally I'll get edema. I'm glad you like the garden. It's my passion.

happy-1 on 08/08/2017:
Gorgeous garden!

jabockov on 08/08/2017:
Thanks! I love how every few weeks it changes as the perennials' bloom cycles rotate.

Horn_of_plenty on 08/09/2017:
I am sorry you have to battle with edema. I'm sure it's not very comfortable.

happy-1 on 08/15/2017:
How are you feeling? Still having edema issues? Been a few days since your last post.

After six weeks on the dreaded weight loss plateau, finally the weight is dropping.  That's four weeks of losing 2 pounds a week, then six weeks staying the same.  Taking away 200 calories per day and increasing activity/exercise a little was the answer.  I'd like to share a picture of a planter of Superstar Petunias.  There's only three plants in the planter!

Progress as of today: 10 lbs lost so far, only 57 lbs to go!

happy-1 on 07/03/2017:
Yay! Congrats!

jabockov on 07/05/2017:
Thanks!

jayhawkjen on 07/04/2017:
Wow, gorgeous!

jabockov on 07/05/2017:
Petunias are my favorite summer flower. Glad you enjoyed the pic.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 07/05/2017:
Those are definitely little superstars! You did a great job with planting them & providing the right amount of water & sun :-)

Congrats on figuring out the mathematical formula for a loss....that's how i do it also. My weight is totally by math. When i go a little over and start to gain, I know it's time to be a little more careful with my weekly calorie averages! Math is the perfect way for me to maintain weight.

jabockov on 07/05/2017:
You're right about the math. Counting and recording the calories is so important. When I stop writing them down, I start eating more without realizing it. Using the BMR formula has been really helpful for figuring out where I am and where I need to be to attain my goal.

Good Morning All!

No weight loss again this week!  Was averaging 1,132 calories per day and getting in an average of 3,382 steps per day, then the weight loss stopped.  So, I decreased my calories by 100 per day, but am having leg problems so haven't been able to manage more than an average of 2,630 steps per day.  I have, however, added upper body exercises daily.  The end of the week should tell if this new strategy is working.

Garden update - So delightful to see the iris blooming.  They survived the winter, the squirrels (who like to dig them up and eat the bulbs), and the deer (they're planted in the front unprotected garden).

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 59 lbs to go!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 06/08/2017:
One tip - increase your veggies...then you can feel full more often and not increase calories. another tip is drink more water....maybe you have some fluid retention.

Also, muscle burns more fat so i am in LOVE with your upper body weight training technique.

Lastly, your "hatched bulbs" are sooooo pretty. love that purple hue!

jabockov on 06/15/2017:
You know, you may be right about the muscle. Building muscle adds some weight. It could be that I am still losing fat, while gaining muscle. I'll stick with it and eat more veggies. Thanks! I love the Iris, too, and can't wait to see them multiply next season.

Donkey on 06/10/2017:
Has your new strategy worked? Adding the upper body exercises, that is... I agree, vegetables and water... Not very exciting but I believe that is what has mainly worked for me.

jabockov on 06/15/2017:
Haven't lost anything, but haven't gained, either. MY clothes fit better, though. Thanks for the advice about the veggies and water. I'll give that a try and let you know.

Horn_of_plenty on 06/12/2017:
I had never heard of self watering pots! :)

jabockov on 06/15/2017:
They have a water reservoir that will hold up to 3 gallons of water, so plants will uptake from the roots, which is better for them anyway. I bought four of them from Gardeners Supply (online) for about $35 each. I LOVE THEM!

jabockov - Sunday May 28, 2017
(Eat Mindfully, Move My Body)
Weight: 184.0

Just as predicted, no weight loss this week, but at least I didn't gain!  Goals have been re-evaluated and I am going to try to decrease my calories per day by100, so the new goal is to stay under 1100 calories per day.  My hip pain is less, so I'll try to get in at least 3,500 steps per day.  Yard and garden work will give me that extra boost, I hope.

Next picture to share is the back yard "Neighbor Gate" that I built the summer before last, so my neighbor could get to the back garden and pick some tomatoes for herself.  I used some left-over cedar fence posts that my son had given me.  I screwed cedar branches in between the posts and cross-members for the vines to grow on.

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 59 lbs to go!

Horn_of_plenty on 05/30/2017:
Wow....so pretty! So creative on your neighbor gate! I love it! Seriously, wonderful work, Jabby!

jabockov on 05/30/2017:
Thank you so much, I'm glad you like it. It was fun making it. I saw something like it on the internet and it didn't seem too difficult, got the simple eye-bolt hinges and slide latch on Amazon, and raided the garage for tools, then used my "trial and error" method for putting it together.

Horn_of_plenty on 05/30/2017:
You are so artsy! What inspired you to be so creative? Were your parents this way too? You much so much heart and love into your work and that is def an inspiration to me. I like to see how people use their spare time to create wonder and beauty...not just sit around all the time ;) My time usually goes to the gym / fitness activities but more and more i'm trying to get off the couch more to do other activities that inspire me. But not gardening (i live on the 9th floor in an apt building in the city)

jabockov on 05/30/2017:
You can garden, even in the city on the 9th floor. Put a pot on a table in front of a window, and vwa-laa!Herbs are a great place to start and are fun to cook with.

Horn_of_plenty on 05/31/2017:
i used to have some herbs that required watering every other day and i forgot and killed them! lol. I had cilantro and stevia plants!

jabockov on 05/31/2017:
With self-watering pots, you seldom have to water! You could forget them for up to 2 weeks. Also, if you plant in a bigger pot it conserves the water better.

Donkey on 06/03/2017:
This is so beautiful! Thank you for sharing!

jabockov on 06/03/2017:
Thank you, but not as beautiful as your reaching your goal!

jabockov - Wednesday May 24, 2017
(Eat Mindfully, Move My Body)
Weight: 184.0

I keep going back to others' diary entries to look for inspiration.  The dreaded plateau has hit and I am emotionally devastated. Yesterday the scale read two pounds heavier and my legs have "kankles".  The last thing I wanted to do was go back on medication for edema.  I'll cut my salt intake and hope it resolves.

It did seem a little better this morning and my weight came back down to 184, but I don't think I'm going to lose any weight, at all, this week. Is it worth it? Please tell me it's worth it!

I'll share a greenhouse picture.  The flowers and seedlings make me feel better.  I'm doing something different this year and planting greens in the railing planters along with the flowers.  If it works, I'll be able to just step out onto the deck to pick salad greens, Swiss chard, and kale.

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 59 lbs to go!

Donkey on 05/24/2017:
Your greenhouse is so delightful! I think I'd bring a comfy chair and read while surrounded by my beloved plants :-)

It IS worth it. Keep trying! Don't give up! These are not platitudes -- I mean this! Don't let that plateau get you down -- now is the time to dig deep, make a change, switch it up. You can do it!

jabockov on 05/25/2017:
See that little space on the floor, right in the middle? That's where I sit when I'm feeling down. I pull the squash plant close to me and play "Bumble Bee" with the flowers. It helps me get over that "give up" feeling. Thanks for your insights.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 05/25/2017:
I love your greenhouse photo also! Such beautiful plants and hard work and LOVE went into it! It's so great to be eating fresh herbs!!! absolutely awesome.! If i lived by you, i'd be begging to taste some!

Also, yes it's worth it to stick with it. I love Donkey's line about "platitudes!" Plateau, i agree, means you have to think of making another change - and then you'll be able to lose weight....or if you are content, stay as what you are doing. but never stop or give up!

jabockov on 05/25/2017:
It's not work when you love it, and I love watching plants grow. ....a seed, it breaks ground and becomes a tiny seedling, then gets bigger and bigger, and blossoms, and fruits.....AMAZING! I'll stick with it, maybe cut a few calories, try some yard work, the railings need paint....hmmmmm

jabockov on 05/25/2017:
Oh, HOP, you wouldn't have to beg, I'd share!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 05/25/2017:
thanks for sharing sweet lady!!! i'd be devouring everything you share with me xoxo...enjoy your night, lady.

Staying the course.  Tried a new recipe: Sesame Shirataki.  The whole recipe only has 320 calories, makes more than 3 cups, and tastes really good. The noodles have no flavor on their own, so cooking them along with other flavorful things is the trick.  The bonus is that they have zero calories!

My hip feels a little better this week, so I am going to try to increase my steps to 4,000 a day.  I also added a light PiYo workout that I will try to incorporate each day.

Here's another picture of my gardens.  This one is in the back yard terracing the hill (another area no longer needing mowing, yahhhh).  The pile of rocks at the bottom shows that it's a work in progress.

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 59 lbs to go!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 05/22/2017:
loving the "stones in progress" in your garden as it also symbolizes our lives and diets and lifestyles always a "work in progress." I feel the photo is a symbolism of the whole meaning of life!

Keep up the great work - i have tried those noodles and do like them -but feel they bloat me and cause constipation which is not good for me while i work! so i don't buy them because they don't work with me going to work...and on weekends lately i'm out and about more than home - so the noodles are no good for my lifestyle now....but i do agree they are an awesome product. if you can flavor them. did you get to liking them in your dish? i hope so...they are pretty darn awesome.

jabockov on 05/22/2017:
I did get the noodles to take on the flavor of the dish so they tasted pretty good, but, you're right, the bloating and gas was definitely a problem. Wow, "...the photo is a symbolism of the whole meaning of life", you're so insightful! I see that picture in a whole new way.

happy-1 on 05/23/2017:
I just started with the shiritaki noodles. Yum!

jabockov on 05/24/2017:
Do you have any recipes to share? I'm having trouble with the gas and bloating that the Shiritaki noodles cause. I'll try "Beano" and see if it helps. Do you have any recommendations?

happy-1 on 05/24/2017:
I haven't had that yet... but I do wash them really well first then nuke them for a minute. I have just been combining them with frozen stuff from Trader Joes to feel like it is a full meal... which also means I'm only eating 1/2 or 1/3 of the package... maybe I am not eating enough to be a gas factory!

Here's a picture showing the kind of gardening and landscaping that I have done. I will try to post a new picture each time I blog.  I got tired of mowing the front hill so I landscaped it with rock and perennials.  There's a rock bench at the sidewalk edge.  I've only seen one passer-by try it out.  My little poodle, Zoe, used to sit there all the time. The sun would warm it up and make it quite nice on a cool day.

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 59 lbs to go!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 05/19/2017:
I absolutely love your landscaping and plantings! So beautiful!

I love that you shared it with us too, it's a nice diversion from excel forms to see some color and beauty in the world too. ;-)
