(paleo/zone diet/gluten-free)
Weight: 287.5

Hello friends! Been 4 years since I added an entry, and I'd like to return to the community. My weight has increased over 35 pounds since then, and without going into detail, my life has had many twists and turns.

But I'm excited to report that I feel overall this year has been one of the best years of growth for my mental health and I'm ready to really start keeping track of my progress in a variety of ways.

Looking back on how I was in 2009 and 2010 on here, I was making quick, simple, and smart food choices. Today, I'm working and traveling more than ever, have more responsibilities, and have a bigger budget for food. As a result, I've ate more at my conveninece and included more alcohol in my regular day to day drink choices.

I had the courage to get on the scale this morning and I'm really proud of where I am - 287.5. Its still about 20 pounds under my heaviest in 2005 of around 305. Yes, I'm 75 pounds heavier than my lowest in 2008 at 212, but I was starving myself then, and I didn't have a very good outlook on how to sustain the progress I had made.

Now in my 30s, I can see how small habits lead to big changes. Today I felt inspried to rejoin the community, and I look forward to following up with each day I make progress.

Thank you all for your support

Progress as of today: 17.5 lbs lost so far, only 76.5 lbs to go!

Weight: 255.0

Hello Diet Diaries!

Well im back today - been a while. Had an amazing summer touring around the world- manila, taiwan, NYC, the east coast, west coast, midwest, and finally home in LA.. Im wearing my travels in my waist line.

Sometimes I forget what It was like when I was over 300 pounds. Im back up to 255, and at one time I was below 220. Its hard to believe at my lowest weight I was the most critical of myself. It was easy to rebound.

Its so true that food is truly the fuel behind the momentum we can create through a weight loss program. We can workout all we want, sweat until our pores don't function, and yet, if we don't eat in a way which will allow the weight to drop, we'll stay the same.

Im commiting myself back to being on track today. I have had plenty of mistakes in the past, Ill have some more in the future, but the important part is that right now im commiting myself to the right choice for me. Im going to see my goal realized soon.

Thanks for everyone who in the past has cared about my thoughts on here, and I look forward to hearing your responses as always!

Food journal today:

Breakfast - coffee, yogurt w/strawberry/blueberry/granola (*S)

Lunch - Salad: Kale, arugula, spinich, strawberry, grapefruit, almond shavings, chicken, 2 strips of apple cured bacon, feta, and EVOO.

Snack- celery w/almond butter, flaxseed chips w/goat cheese.

Dinner - goin on a date tonight.. excited to have the challenge of choosing wisely at dinner!

-jS

Progress as of today: 50 lbs lost so far, only 44 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 09/16/2013:
That's quite the world tour, I'm jealous of your travels! I know how difficult it is to be consistent with eating on the road, particularly when you're changing time zones. Good for you for recommitting to a healthier lifestyle. I hope to see more posts from you.

Weight: 242.0

Tomorrow, it was 2,500 days ago I began my journey towards a healthier lifestyle. Frustrated weighing in at over 300 pounds, I decided to do something about my weight and learn about diet and exercise. This was after a particularly difficult day I had while trying to get new clothes for my senior year at USC. I had a major epiphany when I was about to eat dinner - I realized the choices I have made and the lifestyle I had lead up to that point, got me to this miserable place. I had to change, and I knew I would have to get help. What I didn't know on August 22 2005, is that this journey would truly be lifelong as here I am still counting the days all these years later.

On August 22, 2005, now 2,500 days ago, I began this blog and over the past 7 years I have been on an off blogging about my journey. So far there have been 6 phases to my journey, and today I'm entering the 7th which will be a period of huge growth for me:

Phase I: August 22, 2005-Jan 1, 2006: Learning about exercise, visiting the nutritionist, had a physical and learned about my current state of health, went from 310 to 265lbs. Started swimming to avoid joint pain. Began a food journal

Phase II: Jan 1, 2006-April 30, 2006: Reached my first goal, obtained 230 pounds. Started a swimming routine and weight routine. Learned about the Zone diet, and took a cooking class.

Phase III: Summer 2006-Summer 2007: The hardest part for me - my first year out of college, away from my support system, first period of yo-yo dieting went from 230-235-225-216-227-230 and across the spectrum with my weight. Worked out at the Long Beach YMCA, jogged on the beach. Traveled to Europe and reached again 230 pounds. Began drinking alcohol once a/week.

Phase IV: Fall 2007-Spring 2009: Weight remained in the 220s, left the gym and walked/ran around echo park, weight fluctuated into the 220s, depression became a factor in my eating habits, became leaner into the fall/winter 2008, after my first breakup at the beginning of 2009 I reached my lowest number: 212lbs. I remember feeling 'weak' and lacking in muscle at this point. Financially had struggles, so I ate a grain-based diet at home. Moved to Playa Del Rey, and worked out on the beach. Joined the YMCA in the summer of 2009. Began regularly jogging again on the beach.

Phase V: Fall 2009-fall 2010: Joined Crossfit LA and learned about pushing my body to the extreme. Entered cross fit at 228 pounds, reached 222 while at the gym, became leaner and more muscular. Did my first round of pull-ups ever on my own, learned about olympic weightlifting, gluten-free dieting and the paleo diet. Waist got down to nearly 41". Crossfit Ended at in Nov 2010, as financially I couldn't swing it in school. Entered CalArts. Got 'dunked' (hydrostatic body composition test) in the spring of 2010 and I had 19% body fat. Began attending OA meetings.

Phase VI: Fall 2010-June 23,2012: Completed my Master's Degree at CalARts. During this time I drove 28,000 miles a year, ate out regularly, snacked out of vending machines, exercise consisted of light walking/running, toured regularly, ate most processed foods, began drinking coffee, and alcohol intake increased to several times a week at school and at gigs. My weight went from the upper 220s to the 240s where I am now. In March of 2012, I got to 229 again. April and May were two of the hardest months in my life for me - both emotionally and for my career, and I ballooned up to 244. I have lost 2 pounds this week after working out daily, 3 days of weights, and 6 days of cardio. Im back on a plant-based diet and I have began my food journal again.

Phase VII: July 1, 2012-August 12, 2012: 6 weeks of plant-based dieting: avoid breads, processed foods, sugar, soda, coffee, and alcohol. Eat lean protein, complex carbohydrates, and frequent meals. Cardio (elliptical, walking, jogging, sprinting, swimming, jumprope) 6 days a week and weight training (upper/lower body routine) 3 xs a week. I just joined LA fitness down the street at a steal - $19.95 a month!. My goal is to get as close to 230 in these 6 weeks.

Beyond phase 7, Im hoping to again aim to get to 190 in the long term- however, the immediate goal for the rest of the year will be to get to 211 - one pound under my lightest so far. My ultimate goal is to get my waist at or below 36".

I have began my food journal and workout journal so Ill be posting my daily results on here. The 4th of July holiday is wednesday, and ill plan ahead to have a fun holiday which still meets my goals of activity and food choice.

Other factors which have been challenging to reach my health goals: career projects (touring), stress with developing/finding work, driving to gigs/teaching, success/failure in finding a companion to help me on my journey, family hardship, and struggling with dating women in LA.

Any support is greatly appreciated, this has been a long, hard journey I've been on. This is a life-long struggle and I realize this. Granted, I've been the one that has put myself through my eating and health habits. There have been many other people with much higher goals than what I originally have set who have obtained their goals within the time which I have been concentrating this effort. However, I know that everything happens for a reason, and after figuring out that tomorrow marks my 2500th day, I know that this truly is a new day for my lifestyle goals. I can do this and thanks for all your help and courage.

WOW!!!! This is an impressive and detailed account of your past 2499 days in seeking a healthier way of eating and living. It sounds like you have a good game plan in place and recognize the obstacles along the way. Concentrating on one day at a time will make the journey a little easier to travel since this is a lifelong process (at least for me it is). You've got good motivational skills to be successful in reaching your ultimate goal (you've already come a long way). Continued good luck to you. I'll be interested in following your progress.

Hey Everyone! Hope all has been well

I've been traveling - San Fran, Montreal, NYC, Berlin, Boston - all we're amazing. So was the food. Some of the highlights were the Pizza in NYC and Berlin, the french onion soup in Montreal, the Falafel and Doner Sandwiches in Berlin, and the Clam Chowder in Boston.

I think the pizza in NYC was amazing, and just about did me in for this weight loss stuff. . . haha

I did well, working out most days we weren't traveling, but all in all, the road took its toll on me, glad to be back home.

I've been running every day, glad to report I maintained my weight during the travel time. Now back on the horse - although, I've been saying that all along.

Before leaving I put down a deposit on some personal training for when I return in October. Im here in LA all of August, but ill be on the road all of September - San Fran, Portland, Seattle, Boise, Salt Lake, Vegas, Pheonix, Albequerque, etc. . . that will be an easier tour to work out on, ill not have to sit in planes and trains for hours and hours - just the car. . . Stoked to work with a trainer for a few months. At least that should get me some progress. Looking forward to 09.

Thanks for all the comments and support, I appreciate it and looking forward to hearing about all your progress as well!

Progress as of today: 85 lbs lost so far, only 45 lbs to go!

Hi Jazz! It's hard to be on trck with dieting when one travels so much and is exposed to some much good food! I'd love to try that Boston clam chowder, though, and the onion soup in Montreal! What's Doner sandwiches? Falafel is superb! Ok, now enough of this wonderful food talk. I have to start thinking thin.... Have a great day!

Hey everyone, its been a few days, and I've had some progress, managed to have mom visit me here in town for memorial day, and still keep the weight down. We ate well when she was here, but we kept excersizing and I really only had one meal that was over the top - we went to a great brazilian restaurant called Fogo De Chao, a sorta place where they just keep bringing meats out to your table and you eat and eat and eat. . . . .yeah, Im not gonna lie, it was pretty killin. And the turtle cheesecake and gelato for dessert was amazing.

Okay, back on the horse. I've been doing well. Yesterday was soo good. . .

Breakfast: oatmeal, and water. snack - almonds. lunch - 1/4 chicken w/1 cup fruit and 1 cup broccoli pasta, and water. Dinner: falafel and hummus pita w/lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, peppers, feta cheese, and some sweet cucumber sauce, but I had them put it on just a bit.

Man, that was great, so good. . .only downside, it was all a bit expensive, i probably spent $20 on food yesterday, so Ill find other creative ways.

Okay, so as I go into the weekend, Ill need to watch it. . . but Im excited to be back into the 2-teens. . . really want to get back down to 210-214 before I go on tour in a few weeks. We'll be going to Montreal, New York, and Berlin. You know ill be drinking some beer out there. . . ... . .gotta get ready. . .. haha

Progress as of today: 86 lbs lost so far, only 29 lbs to go!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 05/29/2008:
haha! I've been to a restaurant in NYC called Churascaria. I might have spelled it wrong. It's a brazilian BBQ and they do the same thing with the meat, until you let them know you are done! :)

Beth201P on 05/29/2008:
That sounds like a very nice place to eat. Wow...you are going to some nice places. Have a safe trip if I don't see you you back on before you leave.

Weight: 220.0

Stepped on the scale, still 220, so officially Im down 5 pounds from about 10 days ago. . . happy to report! Im so close I can taste it! and we all know how much we like to taste stuff! haha

Exercise: jog around echo park lake this morning - hot outside, at 7:30 it was already 75. . .

Diet: could have been better, but still I managed to portion out my food, avoid breads, and avoid getting hungry! key when you're trying to lose. Breakfast: oatmeal and water. Snack: apple and watter. Lunch: Chili w/soy corn dog (total 20g protein). snack: a couple of small cookies, celery, and another apple. Dinner: chicken breast, thigh, wings, and later a small chicken sandwich w/grilled chicken, whole wheat bun, lettuce, tomato, and guacamole. Water, water, water, water. For dinner I had 2 diet cokes (8oz)

Tomorrow, ill have the usual breakfast, Ill be going to a barbeque at a friends in the afternoon, Ill fix a snack w/ probably bananas, almonds, and yogurt, and then I have a dinner meeting at a fine italian restaurant, so I know my main concern will be portions. Its important I get a good workout in the morning since I won't be doing my usual 5K at night on the beach tomorrow.

190 or bust! here I come

Progress as of today: 85 lbs lost so far, only 30 lbs to go!

RE: Dried Fruits~ Thanks for the info.....Saturday was the first time in a couple weeks I have had any of the dried cranberries... I was eating them almost every day before... The ones I get aren't the Ocean Spray sugar laden bits/pieces.... I order them from a place online (nutsonline.com)..They are whole and outweigh raisins (which I totally love in oatmeal) in their nutritional value.... I put "8" in the oatmeal at the most at any time.

You are doing good...Keep up the good work!

Hey! Thanks for your post. What is "flexetarian" -- am I really stupid to ask? Is it an LA thing that us Jersey folk wouldn't understand? Hee hee.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 05/19/2008:
congrats on being so close to your goal! :)

I have a tip on not getting hungry or giving in to temptation. The tip is to keep yourself as relaxed as possible, to tell yourself that there is nothing to be nervous/anxious about. I personally am an emotional eater that eats due to stress - either after it, during it, or before it! Basically, I think happy thoughts, haha easier said than done, and I am able to forgo bad eating (at least for the next few months while stress is very low.)
