I cannot believe this, but i've received an appointment to see the ortho surgeon about my knee for this Friday, like in two days. Amazeballs.

I am very nervous and I don't know what to expect. I've never had to see a surgeon/specialist before, except for Women Only issues. But I am so very grateful that I don't have to wait three months for an initial assessment!

In all the excitement of having the surgeon's office call me yesterday, I blinked and three hours went by. I did not even exercise! I swear I must have stared at the wall for an hour just thinking about this appointment on Friday.

So, I guess, another rest day.

Breakfast - mocha

Lunch - turkey sandwich

Dinner - pork ribs, brown rice, green beans

Exercise - 30 minutes walking at track

Snack - juice! skipped yesterday due to staring at wall for excessive amount of time

I'm so out of sync today; forgot to make oatmeal so missing some fibre and protein in my morning. Didn't make my usual lunch of salad and boiled egg. This means it might be a tough eating day for me because i'm not eating the things that keep me full longer. Maybe i'll make up for it and have oatmeal when I get home after work, if i'm not already starving for dinner!

Progress as of today: 14 lbs lost so far, only 11 lbs to go!

Hi everybody!

Friday - day off from exercise; good eats.

Saturday - birthday dinner at Grandma's; went overboard by about 400 calories because of the extra yummy birthday cake ;)

Got in a great Latin Groove dance workout in, and some resistance moves as well. Very satisfied with workouts today. Very easy on the knee.

Sunday - indoor golf all afternoon tired me right out! Eats were OK, not the best but no junk food either so that's good. Golfing was very easy on the knee, but managed to use muscles I haven't for awhile and was pretty sore Monday. And today, if i'm being honest.

Monday - was supposed to do a Just Dance workout, but workout buddy cancelled so I took the initiative and gave myself another rest day :) Eats were OK again; not enough vegetables. Story of my life.

Tuesday:

Breakfast - mocha

Lunch - oatmeal, pb, apple

Snack - yogurt, skinny b

Dinner - chicken, rice, tossed salad with celery, carrots, parsley

Exercise - supposed to be a 30 minute walk at the track, but unsure if this is going to happen so maybe another resistance workout. I have a resistance band from Grandma (when she had knee surgery - oh, look, common theme) so might try to incorporate that.

Snack - juice! day 183957485739867. LOL, I kid.

Tempted to continue to cry and complain about knee. Cried to Dad yesterday about the possibility of having to give up some sports, and he sympathized but said I shouldn't focus so much on the giving up part of things. So am looking forward to spring and the return of golf - something I know i'll be able to do - and outside walks. In the meantime, will continue to work on strengthening the muscles around my knee and... well... come what may. Patience is a virtue I have not yet learned, but today I am okay with slower paces and long wait times. Tomorrow I may be pissed off again.

I understand very well. Never thought I used my knee so much until I could not. lol Some things we take for granted until we can't use it anymore. Can you do the side movement with your knee in your golf swing. That is what I cannot do. Actually never thought I had a side movement in my swing til I could not do it anymore. lol So I swing with a straight leg. I have to concentrate so much on my leg that my swing is just ****ty. LOL. I hope you have a great day. A lot of other great things in life. Like our overall health. Take care and don't be so hard on yourself.

My knee problem was caused by the twist. I was painting my condo and I came down from the stepladder and instead of turning my body I turned my knee. Big mistake. Of course did not stop finished my work and made it worst. The last blow was when I picked up a box and did it again and I felt it snap that is when the meniscus was majorly damages. That was April 2012. I am 60 and was use to be very active and now I sit on my A-- and can't do too much.

Thanks everyone for your very concerned and well meaning comments on my last entry.

I am taking your advice. For the most part.

After realizing that my aerobics workout could do so much harm in one measly little half hour, i've tempered my workouts drastically. I would like to start lifting, but I don't have a membership to the gym and quite frankly, I don't know how to lift. So instead, i'm working on a routine using the resistance of my own body, and some free weights I have at home.

On Wednesday I walked for 30 minutes.

On Thursday I had an appointment for a massage, which was wonderful. My back feels so much better (knock on wood), and she even took a look at my knee and thinks it is a PCL tear. I then did an abdominal workout, and a bit of upper body resistance stuff. Tried to mostly stay off my legs and not jump around too much.

Since I work at a hospital with physiotherapy services, I am going to ask the therapist for exercises I can do to strengthen the muscles around my knee to give it more stability. I hear this is the thing to do for preventing future torn ligaments.

Today is an off day for exercise, and tomorrow I think I will tweak a routine for resistance training. There may be a you tube video I can find that will cover this area for me. I'm thinking a butt load of pushups and/or planks will be my main focus.

Then Sunday I am golfing (indoors) in the afternoon. I think that will go well. And skipping another week of wallyball, per dd's/friends/family orders ;)

Well, after all that verbal vomit...

Breakfast - mocha x 2

Lunch - oatmeal

Snack - salad, yogurt, skinny b

Dinner - chicken, brown rice, cabbage roll x 2 (mom gave me her leftovers on Wednesday :) SCORE)

Exercise - Day off

Snack - juicing day holylordihavenoidea: almost done the veggies, need to pick up apples today after work or there won't be any juicing happening tonight.

Progress as of today: 14 lbs lost so far, only 11 lbs to go!

Glad you're going to take it easier on your knee. Hope you heal quickly. Re working out at home with free weights - you can find lots of youtube videos showing you the proper way to lift with lots of good tips. Good idea to strengthen the muscle around your knees.

hey cramps! lol, that sounds bad...so, hey leg! ugh...both sound bad! so, hi legcramps :-)

sounds like me & you both injured oursevles & we both don't wanna stop exercising completely to heal faster. i agree it's hard to just take a full day off, when i am not so active other than the exercise i deliberately do to change my lifestyle into a more active one. my leg is also still bothering me - 2 weeks now. but you know what, i am pretty sure it's nothing & that in time i will get better. for now, i run less (really only a lil bit in bootcamp) and walk on my own - no jogging/running at the moment for me.

ohh, good job with free weights. you can also buy resistance bands - i think that's the approach of the Curves women's gyms if you are familiar. you should utube exercies for both, like you said you would, and i am sure - definitely sure - you will find plenty. if i ever move into a 2-bed apt, i would set up a gym in the second room lol. but, i have you credit, right now i am not motivated to workout at home & i enjoy the atmosphere of the outdoors and the gym to pull me through. if you can exercise at home, it makes it that much easier for you to be active :-)

you asked me about time running out and why i feel that way. I turned 30 in September and I am starting to get a little depressed that my body - physically & mentally - will not as easily recover or act the way it did when i was 20. i know i get tired a lil easier and lack of sleep really kills me when i have to work so much. i just feel like it's a battle for me to chug through and i feel as though i must get into the January 2014 academy (which is looking like it may not happen and i may just have to wait till the July 2014 that follows!) and i am just so nervous that with all the sitting and lack of continuous exercise and well as lack of sleep - that something is going to happen to me - physically/mentally/stress-related that will hurt me in the end - even before the academy even starts.

I'm so glad that you have an alternative instead of just banging through the pain on your knee!! My daughter has "loose patellas" and very little tendon strength to keep her patellas in place. As a competitive swimmer she used to wear knee braces to keep it from popping out but then the rules disallowed that so she went to taping them. She got a lot of relief from the meniscal (sp?) tape and she is doing much better. She doesn't swim competitively anymore, but when she swims for exercise she says her knees feel much better. I guess the 15 years of pounding on them without any rest didn't let them strengthen. She hurt the worst while training for a triathlon for Luekemia. We told her that her knees were not capable of that kind of running, but she was determined and did it. Long story short, let that possible tear heal and do lower impact and maybe your knee will come back even stronger!! Have a great week!!

Well, is no news good news?

The x-ray of my knee came back normal, so my family doctor is going to refer me to a bone specialist in the city. He gave me the specialist's name, so I checked him out and the wait time to see him is three months.

Hopefully I won't have totally obliterated my knee by that time.

Bad news: I was a little upset about this yesterday, so I took it out on an aerobics workout instead of doing the planned 30 minute walk. And i'm paying for it today; my knee is very sore and it's painful to lift, cross, tuck, and turn my knee. I know, that was a stupid thing to do.

Good news! I am off the medications and lost the couple of pounds that i'd put on over the course of the prescription.

Bad news: Now i'm taking OTC for my knee. What a pill popper am I ;)

I made an appointment for a massage tomorrow and hopefully that will fix up whatever lower back issues are still simmering under the skin.

Breakfast: mocha, oatmeal, apple, peanut butter

Lunch: salad, celery, carrots, salad dressing

Snack: yogurt, skinny b

Dinner: chicken, brown rice, green beans

Exercise - walk 30 minutes at track

Snack: juicing day... what day am I on? Same juice as yesterday, until the veggies are used up!

Progress as of today: 14 lbs lost so far, only 11 lbs to go!

Damn that knee! I know what you mean about not knowing or something not showing up. But 3 months for an appointment? I don't want to tell you to baby that knee, but extra use might be an aggravation for a situation that you don't know exists. (Does that make any sense?) My co-worker bought a juicer a couple of years ago and he was using it here because he lives alone and most of his time is spent in the office. Well, he liked his juices but it made a MAJOR mess. And he wan't real good at cleaning it up. I think he got tired of the clean up before he got tired of the juices. He also went through a heck of a lot of stuff to extract a little juice. What kind of juicer did you get and is it easy to use and clean? I don't know if I could do it seeing that I struggle to drink water or any liquid for that matter, but I would like to let him know that maybe there is a better machine than he had. ugghh, sorry you still don't have any answers about your knee! I had horrible lower back pain last week and had a massage on Saturday-my lower back pain has vanished this week, so hopefully yours will do the same! Menu looks great!!

I guess it is a good thing about the x-ray being in your favor but as far as your knee well maybe try super low impact cardio with weight training(not sure how you feel about lifting) Sorry to quote Tony Horton but he says to work the opposing muscle group during injury..Don't make it worse girl, you have to live with your knees forever <3 Hope it feels better soon!

Does your knee hurt internally in the joint, or does it seem to be the ligaments on the inside or outside of your knee or does it hurt behind? 3 months to wait for a dr. visit is nuts. Do you have to have a referral or can you go to another doc you can get to see sooner? On the other hand if you wait the 3 months and it's something that will resolve itself due to a strain, etc.......I know that is so frustrating. Do you have swelling?

RYC: today could have been a bikini day--if I was that skinny--haha! the old bottom will be dropping out of these nice days so that it'll be back to winter. Our coldest weather is practically tropical compared to what you contend with of course!

I was reminiscing yesterday with my coworkers about when we were kids. I have an older brother, so they got to hear lots of stories about how I would do anything he told me to do, and how many bruises and scrapes I would get because of listening to him.

For example, he'd call out "run at me as fast as you can!" and, of course, I would.

BAM. CLOTHESLINED.

"stand here in the middle of this hockey net"

POOF. RUBBER PUCK IN THE FACE.

"stand on this skateboard and i'll tie it to my bike and pull you around"

WHACK. FACE FIRST INTO THE CEMENT.

I cannot believe I haven't broken any bones yet. Knock on wood.

Breakfast: mocha, oatmeal

Lunch: salad

Snack: yogurt, skinny b

Dinner: chicken, brown rice

Exercise: walk 30 minutes at track, Zumba if there's time

Snack: juicing day 13: 1 beet, celery, 2 carrots, 1 apple, some parsley

Just Dance workout last night was THE BOMB. Loved it, so high energy except that my workout friend ended it after 30 minutes and I was ready to freakin dance the whole night through. Need to borrow this fascinating thing called Wii and Just Dance 3.

P.S. - I get to hear the results of the x-ray on my knee this afternoon.... dum dum dum dum...

Good luck with your results. I also was the youngest and a girls. The boys certainly had me doing a lot of stupid stuff. Cowboys and Indian guess who was the indian getting killed. Goal keeper in hockey. Back catcher in baseball. LOL Brothers you have to love them because if not you would kill them. LOL. Have a great day. You brought me good memories.

I have been researching it also and in order to loose body fat it is what I thought it was

Fats 20 to 30 grams daily Carbs 70 gram daily

Now that would be for 1200 calories daily intake which is what I am on.

LOL sounds like my siblings! There are 6 of us all within 4 years of age difference so you can imagine LOL. OH and the lunch time yoga is here at work! We have a large conference room that gets used. I really like it!

legcramps - Monday Feb 04, 2013

I played it smart over the weekend and avoided having to converse with other people. This gave me an opportunity to 'get over' my bleariness without saying something I might regret later.

I am happy to report that by Sunday afternoon, I was dancing to a Zumba workout in my living room. Good times.

Eats: omellettes, toast, chicken on Saturday and salmon on Sunday. Sunday is turning into fish day; that's two weeks in a row where i've had fish on Sunday.

My knee is not better, but my back certainly is a lot better than it was last week. Today is the last day of the anti-infammatory (thank God) and I stopped taking the painkillers during the day; only one right before bed.

Breakfast - mocha, oatmeal

Lunch - chef salad

Snack - yogurt, skinny b

Dinner - chicken, rice, green beans

Exercise - Just Dance workout

Snack - juicing day 12:  my juicer seems to be struggling with juicing carrots, beets, anything with a tougher consistency. still got my juice last night though - carrots, apple, celery, parsley, and a beet. same thing on tap for tonight!

Looking forward to slow-cooked chicken tonight for dinner :)

At least your back is progressing! I'm sure once you get off the pain meds your thoughts will be a little more clear. I hope you find relief for your knee soon. RYC, yes, I am a little overwhelmed right now, but riding and eating right do make me feel better. My friend should be OK, it just hit a little close to home! Do you like the ZUmba? I bought a xbox kinect Zumba at the beginning of the summer, but I never opened it...I guess I should give it a try! Hope you have a nice day!

My knee problem is I damaged the meniscus further damage to it would be final for me. The told me it would at least take a year of being extremely careful. Would not know if I am damaging it until I do something and I make it worst. That is why I am staying away from any standing exercises or sit up or push ups.

Great alternative for a workout since you knee is still troubling you :( RYC Yep only one jello shot, they were hella strong,you know it's bad when you can't taste the jello..hahahaha I guess it was for the best, I am sure I would have downed an entire tray had they been a little weaker.. Catching up with your posts. Sorry for the pains in knee and back. I will tell you I had awful knee problems out of the clear blue about a year and a half ago. I had to really baby it and skip some types of exercise and rest it. That is actually one of the reasons I began cycling again-so blessing in disguise?? But I see you are not resting it. Did doc say to rest it? I really didn't think my knee would EVER be the same - it was so unstable - period. But it came back....at least so far! LOL. Hope things work out. Thank you for your kind comments. I know you have been through similar stuff as we are with MIL. It's especially hard since we lost dad a year ago. Nothing much to do for her at this time. Feels so wrong.

legcramps - Friday Feb 01, 2013

I think these meds are taking a toll on me... I just want to be done with them. They're making me feel crappy. And hungry. Yesterday was a bad day. I ate my way through a box of chocolates and stubbornly ate two peanut butter sandwiches because I was feeling sorry for myself.

And really, all this bloatedness is just bringing me down, man. I'm so depressed I could write a song.

I am so going to head to bed when I get home from work today.

Breakfast - mocha, yogurt

Lunch - blerg, who cares

Snack - yogurt, skinny b

Dinner - chicken and something else, maybe oven cooked fries. maybe more chocolate

Exercise - day off

Snack - juicing day 9: I skipped juicing yesterday once again. No excuse for it; I was angry and down on myself and ate two peanut butter sandwiches and a box of chocolates instead. But you already heard about that, so I won't reiterate. Much.

I can try to pull myself out of this well i'm stuck in, but I really think the only thing to do is take the darn meds and wait it out. I'll be done by Tuesday. I hope.

But it's dark in here and I don't have a lantern. And the zombies may get me.

legcramps - Thursday Jan 31, 2013

Definitely feeling a little blah this morning. I got at least eight hours of sleep, but I think i'm getting groggy from the painkillers.

There is a windchill warning out today; it is - 48 degrees celcius with the windchill this morning. That's akin to freezing bare skin in under three minutes. Awesomesauce.

Good thing it only takes me 2 minutes and 45 seconds to walk from my car to the entrance to where I work. Now if only I had remembered to put a toque on. And warmer gloves. Brrr.

Anyways, I saw a slight gain on the scale this morning and not sure what it's from since i've been eating really well and getting exercise in. I could be retaining fluids because of the meds though, so i'm not going to freak out about it. Let it be.

Breakfast: mocha, oatmeal (apple, pb)

Lunch: soup or salad

Snack: yogurt, skinny b

Dinner: chicken, rice

Exercise: 30 day shred (not all of it, so don't freak out on me, just a few of the moves that i'm comfortable doing)

Juicing day 8 was a wash; I was groggy and tired and too lazy to make myself juice. Will try again tonight.

Knee pain again last night. Geez, this is happening more and more often; kind of takes my breath away.

Wow on that windchill, be careful! The pain meds can definitely mess with your system so I wouldn't worry about the gain. Have a good one!

Doc actually showed a little bit of concern yesterday when I went to see him. Not with my back, he figures I just pulled a muscle in my back, but with my knee. He gave me a prescription for anti-inflammatories and a painkiller (told you so!).

One painkiller before bed and I haven't slept that well in years.

Doc also asked me to get a better brace for my knee, so I went shopping after my appointment, while I was waiting to fill my prescription. I found a much better, more stable brace. Still don't know how i'm going to wear it while playing wallyball though. Skip the knee pad on that side I guess.

Then I went to the hospital so they could x-ray my knee. I won't know the results of this until my follow-up appointment next week. Doc says if the x-ray doesn't show anything, he's going to send me to a specialist.

Breakfast - mocha, oatmeal

Lunch - soup or salad

Snack - I forgot to bring one... this might end up being scary.

Dinner - chicken, rice, green beans

Exercise - walk 30 minutes at track

Snack - juicing day 8: 1 beet, 3 stalks celery, 3 large carrots, parsley, and 1 apple.

Happy Hump Day!

Progress as of today: 14 lbs lost so far, only 11 lbs to go!

Glad you got a good night sleep and nothing too serious with your back. Take care of that knee! RYC, you hit the nail on the head - I am feeling guilty and normally I wouldn't let it bother me, but I am picking up on strained vibes from him and I don't know if it is directed at me or just that we are in a financial pinch at the moment. And it doesn't help that he is my younger brother...AHHHH I need to talk to him now, but he is in a really deep thought process for a project right now and I am afraid disturbing him will only complicate my issues. I WILL TELL HIM - Thanks! I needed that!

Remember that anti-inflammatories use on regular basis will cause fluid retention..Yes, they are great for muscle inflammation, but cause swelling...Go figure! If/when they work, it is a great relief to be rid of the pain no matter. I hope your x-rays turn out that you don't have any major issues and it can be fixed with medicine and the right brace....

Sorry you're having so much trouble with aches and pains. I swear by deadlifts for low back and squats to keep my quads/knees healthier (than if I don't do them). I don't know how old you are, but past 35ish it takes somewhat regular wt trng (at least for me) to avoid pain/keep the muscles built up. I'd think with the wallyball and other organized sports you do, that would probably help out a lot.

I just recently found out that my BP is fairly sensitive to ibuprofen--it goes up, so I have to be careful. If I were a normal weight I wonder if this would be such an issue. I guess time will tell:-)

I hope you find out there's nothing serious going on, you can fully recover and resume your normal activities!

I am happy that you got your knee checked out..I hope everything is resolved soon girl..I have knee issues as well and have to wear a brace on the right knee(it is all jacked up) when I workout..Hoping that your tests are in your favor <3

I had an extremely angry day yesterday when the thought occurred to me that I might have to give up playing wallyball for now. It makes me angry just typing it out.

I made a doctor's appointment for this afternoon, since this morning my lower back is still in some pain, and my knee was also burning and quite sore to move around. Enough.

My birthday is coming up on Feb 10th and i'll be damned if i'm going to miss out on the afternoon of indoor golfing I planned. So, here we go. Let's hope there's an easy fix.

Day 7 of juicing: I feel like I may be getting too much fibre in my daily diet. Maybe TMI but the BMs are not going well. My weekly review of juicing leaves me wanting to limit them to one a day instead of two. Might try that for a week and see what happens. Otherwise, i'm very happy with the results of the juicing so far. Definitely feeling more energetic! This is such an awesome way to get in the vegetables that I so obviously ignore in my diet.


Breakfast: mocha, juice (+ extra cup of black coffee) (250)

Lunch: salad or soup (400)

Snack: yogurt (100)

Dinner: chicken, rice, green beans (400)

Exercise: walk 30 minutes at track (don't think for a second i'm going to stop doing everything)

Snack: peanut butter sandwich (350)

Hopefully the doc can suggest some good alternatives for my knee; i'm thinking an actual brace or wrap that will better support my sporting activities. And I guess some painkillers for my back, because what else can we do?

Not sure what all your aches and pain issues are, but we have started taking some supplement called Flex-a-min by Nature's Bounty. It sure has helped my husband's knees and my lower back issues....Took about a week or two to reaaly start noticing..Beats shoveling down the ibuprofen!

Oh no! That's a shame that you might have to give up wallyball for a while, but hopefully the doc can patch you up. I'm sure you'll be able to return to it in no time.

Hopefully this is a "temporary" condition that can be resolved with a little self-care and, perhaps, medication. I admire your motivation! I also need more veggies incorporated into my meal plan; I tried the juicer but haven't found combinations that are low cal AND taste good...yet! Still experimenting with this :)

I hurt my knee last year just stepping down from my Step Ladder. Turned the knee instead of the body. Ended up with six months sitting down with ice and leg up and pack on quite a few pounds - so hello I am here. I made it worst because I wanted to finish my painting job - had I stopped I would not be here right now. So take care and have a good day

Knees are my weakness too, they are always going out on me. I try to do more squat exercises and walking to strengthen them up.
