legcramps - Tuesday Nov 29, 2011

Weight: 167.0

My walk last night didn't happen because I was too busy falling asleep on the couch. But oh my! I got myself a pretty decent amount of actual sleep last night and I feel tons better today, about everything. It feels like the cloud is lifting (knock on wood). In fact, just a few days ago I was tempted to take down all my Christmas decorations because... just because. Today, I feel much better about Christmas and much less like the Grinch who stole it ;)

My eating yesterday was superb as well and maybe that had something to do with being able to sleep better: coffee, oatmeal with apple, peanut butter and milk, cream of chicken and corn soup with a few slices of french bread (slathered with garlic), snack of cheese and crackers, snack of spinach smoothie.

It may still seem like a lot, but at least i'm heading in the direction of nutrition instead of junk.

Today i'm going to concentrate on keeping the kitchen clean, cleaning the bathroom and either doing some reading or watching an episode of something-or-other before bed.

Plan: coffee, chicken noodle dish, more soup and french bread (with garlic) for dinner, and snack of spinach smoothie. Stick to this legcramps! I want to sleep well again tonight.

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 12 lbs to go!

Glad to hear you are feeling better abouit Christmas... I too go through phases, ever since my father passed away, that I just don't want the holidays to happen, so I can totally relate... I think a little heavy on the healthy food is definitely the way to go in the direction of nutrition instead of junk... Its a definite improvement! have a great day!!

Glad you're feeling better. Good food plans. Thanks for comments, but you wouldn't want to see a photo now of where I live - it's all grey and dreary looking. But I'll take one for you tomorrow and post it!

Oh my Lord! I am swelling up like an air balloon! I need to stop this emotional eating! Now!

I've got to get a handle on what i'm eating - I went through too many periods on the weekend of eating until I could barely move. Today my plan is lots of water, soups, and some oatmeal for extra protein. I'm going to get some milk, cans of soup and bananas after work today and concentrate on getting the right nutrition in.

I went to visit Dad this weekend and got quite the scare. He has lost much more weight than I expected, and looks tepid, pale, and sickly. I wish I could give him some of my extra fat ;) goodness knows, he's the one that needs it, not me!

I am slightly overloaded at work, but I am happy that I was able to get some housework done yesterday. At least my house doesn't look like a total disaster zone anymore.

Thanks for all your comments lately! I know I haven't been commenting on your entries much lately, and i'm not totally concentrated on my own health right now - but i'm glad I can still come here and vent and not turn everyone away! It just means so much!

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 12 lbs to go!

So sorry to hear your Dad is having such a rough time. Good for you for stocking up on some healthy foods and staying on top of that during a difficult emotional time. I'm thinking of you!

I know you are going through so much right now. You can always vent here. Sending hugs your way!

~WI~ on 11/29/2011:
I am so sorry to hear about your dad. As all of us get older, we see our parents going through things we used to watch other people's parents go through. Now it is our parents going through it. Very, very difficult indeed. It is understandable that you are down and commendable that you are working through it by continuing on with the tasks of daily life and rituals. There is nothing wrong with that at all. I know this time of year is bad for S.A.D. and the doctor told me the other day to increase my vitamin D. I now take 2500 i.u.'s a day. Praying for you.

New plan, seeing as I could barely walk 12 minutes yesterday. I did a set of stairs, and I tell 'ya - the walk back up was so much EASIER on my calves! Unbelievable!

Eats: coffee, cream of chicken soup, turkey sandwich, brocccoli salad (it was delicious), bean burrito.

Today: mocha, broccoli salad, turkey sandwich, dinner TBD.

I couldn't stop the tears yesterday after work. I barely made it into the house before I just started sobbing. I am so emotional these days, and everything is really bothering me. People in loving relationships, families together for the holidays, good health. I'm having a hard time coping with the realities i'm being faced with. I know some people have had to face even more tragic circumstances, and i'm trying to keep that in mind. But right now i'm still very angry and inconsolable.

To bring the work day to a close, i've spent the last two hours putting up Christmas decorations. Yes, that's just the thing to bring my mood around. <sarcasm>

I took part of the morning off so that I could get some extra sleep in; it was a wonderful reprieve while it lasted and I was glad I had a mind to do it that way instead of taking the afternoon off to do nothing since I can't go in to see Dad today because of the freezing rain coming down.

My God what a depressing entry! Feel free to let your eyes glaze over as you read ;)

hollybelle on 11/26/2011:
So sorry about your Dad. My Dad also has cancer. It's very hard seeing your parents go through serious illness. Husband and I always said after Thanksgiving dinners in the past how lucky we felt having all our parents still with us and in relatively good health. This year we talked about how hard it is to see how fragile they actually are. Dad is doing "ok" relatively speaking, but he's been through so much. The treatment your dad is getting sounds very aggressive. I hope for the best for him. If you ever need to talk - we are here don't worry so much about posting these hard feelings. It helps. (((((Hugs))))) to you.

I only got 17 minutes of walking in, was painful again. I think I will finish off my last 20 minute walk today and then take the rest of the week off and start again Monday walking 30 minutes three times a week for two weeks. See if that helps. Then start the running program if I can.

I had a long day yesterday, thinking about Dad in the hospital and not being able to be there. I had so much work to do and then an evening meeting that lasted much longer than usual. I nearly fell into bed as soon as I got home, but I managed to stay awake long enough to have a slice of lemon cake ;)

Eats yesterday: coffee, oatmeal, turkey sandwich, beef wrap, cream of chicken soup, brown rice, lemon slice.

Today's plan: coffee, lunch meeting (soup and sandwiches), apple, turkey sandwich and... ? a side dish of some sort. Broccoli salad sounds appetizing.

I have my runners at work again today, so I think I will head straight to the rink after work and get my walking done. If I could get some decent sleep I might not be feeling so overwhelmed about everything. It seems just when I fall asleep, two hours later I have to be up for work. All this tossing and turning for hours in bed is leaving me a little frustrated!

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 12 lbs to go!

grannyannie on 11/24/2011:
Hope the pain eases soon. Maybe avoid the walks for a few days? Food sounds healthy. Hope you are able to get some decent sleep soon!

Everything is frustrating me, everything! But I will be thankful that I got through my 20 minute walk yesterday even though there was pain. Strange pain. Strange, pulling pain. I may re-evaluate soon if this doesn't let up. Before I actually start running, I might want to do the walking over again, this time doing it three days a week instead of every day. Maybe every day was too ambitious of me.

I took a nap right after eating dinner, then Dad called to talk to me about his treatment schedule. Holy Busy Batman! My Lord, this is scary. Chemo once a week, radiation every day. I will have to pour Ensure down his throat every waking minute. I am so scared for him.

Eats yesterday: coffee, yogurt and granola, chicken and brown rice with red pepper, kitkat, turkey sandwich, lemon slice.

Eats today (plan): coffee, oatmeal, turkey sandwich with brown rice and red pepper, dinner meeting (soup and sandwiches).

I will try to get my 20 minute walk in at work before the meeting - brought my runners with me so it shouldn't be a problem as long as I remember to do it!

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 12 lbs to go!

Eats for Monday: coffee, yogurt and granola, chicken and brown rice, biscuits, chicken and brown rice, lemon slice.

I did my 20 minute walk last night, but it wasn't much fun. My left shin was feeling it pretty heavily and by the time I left I was limping slightly, favoring my right leg in order to get down the stairs. But I got it done and i'm still alive. Cool.

I went to bed early last night because i've been feeling tired since the weekend. Apparently I slept through my alarm this morning and woke up when I should have already been at work! I hate it when that happens; now I will be anxious for the rest of the day, thinking i'm forgetting to do things etc. I'm sure the alarm went off, I must have shut it off without realizing and gone back to sleep. There are all these things running through my brain lately; I imagine my brain and my body were both telling me that they needed an extra hour of sleep ;)

Today's eats will be: coffee, yogurt and granola, chicken and brown rice with red pepper, lemon slice. A friend gave me the lemon slice and since you can't freeze it, guess i'll just have to measure it out and have a little each day until it's gone. Poor me. I'm sure i'll also fit in an afternoon snack, but I didn't bring anything so i'm unsure as to what that will be.

Another 20 minute walk on the schedule for today!

biscottibody59 on 11/22/2011:
I know I've mentioned this before, but for me any kind of leg/joint pain means I need new shoes. I remember you and I had the same Mizuno model awhile back. They really turned out to be a dud for me. They fit my gait (fairly neutral/supinator), but they just didn't stand up in the end. I did end up getting one more pair because they were about 20 dollars off the original price. Each pair lasted me only about 2-3 months for walking on asphalt nearly daily.

Ignore me if I'm repeating myself on the shoes:-) I hope you get your shin issue solved--no fun when you expect exercise to make you feel good!

Umpqua on 11/22/2011:
Great job with the walking, I hope you are completely pain free very soon!

You must have needed the extra sleep, but I know what you mean, I hate when that happens too. Hope you feel well rested.

biscottibody59 on 11/22/2011:
I hope it's not a stress fracture. Hang in there!

I didn't get this thing diagnosed, but I had started up jogging (after a little break--a month or something) a few years ago and I think I did too much too quickly. My shins weren't hurting at all, but one night I got into the car for a quick trip (I have a standard shift, thus a clutch) and on that leg, after I got out of the car, it felt like my shin was going to explode--but just in one small spot. I started icing it right after. I definitely quit jogging and maybe even walking (for exercise anyway). I think it was pretty inflamed for even walking any distance for about a week or two afterward. At any rate, I have luckily not felt that since.

I just wanted to relate my experience.

As for me and caffeine, as the years have passed the pros of quitting it (on a regular basis, if that's possible for me even--so far not so good) outweigh the cons.

Up next are the 20 and 30 minute walks. So far, I am at 4 NO PAIN walks!

Friday I used up my 15 minutes shovelling in the backyard. I had to shovel once in the morning before work, and once again after work. I was tired after that and had no time to walk, and I figured the shovelling would make up for it. I went to a dinner theatre that evening and it was hilarious! Loved the show, and the food was good too: roast beef, perogies, tossed salad and a broccoli salad that was so good I raved about it almost the entire night.

Saturday morning I was up early and headed to church for breakfast: coffee, 2 saskatoon berry pancakes, real canadian bacon, 1 slice rye toast and some fruit. Not much selection, but it sure was good! Then I went into the city with some friends to do some shopping. I count my 15 minute walk during this time. I found all my christmas gifts except for my brother and my grandma. Wow! So early this year! I also found some things for myself: socks, cardigan, sweaters and a new pair of boots to trudge through all the snow on my way to work. Eats for the rest of the day: beef burger with sweet potato fries, popcorn, a handful of mixed snacks and a few too many whiskeys ;)

Sunday was rough. I was tired, I had an argument with Mom on Saturday evening and it rolled through my mind all night. I started the day with coffee and a toasted bagel with cream cheese.  After some more shopping (and my 20 minute walk), we went for lunch: grilled chicken, mozza cheese, regular fries. I should have gotten something other than fries but by this point I wasn't feeling good emotionally and only wanted to eat my way into a better mood. Finally made it back home, sifted through my purchases, made myself a dinner of chicken and brown rice, called Mom back and rectified that situation (for now). Then I called Dad, heard about his upcoming doctor's appointments for chemo and radiation treatments and discussed what I could do to help him out when he goes for treatments. Two more phone calls and then I collapsed on the couch with a book.

I'm tired this morning, but it's manageable. I think I will take a nap after work and then decide what to have for dinner and go for my 20 minute walk.

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 12 lbs to go!

Kati on 11/21/2011:

Ah, that massage yesterday was the cat's meow. My shoulder was very tender, but she managed to work out a lot of the strain and I feel much better today.

Went for my walk yesterday and completed 15 minutes with absolutely NO shin or calf pain!

PAIN - 2               NO PAIN - 1

I walked incredibly slowly. It was more of a stroll, really. Now I just have to work on slowly getting my speed back to where it was, which really wasn't all that fast to begin with. I have 12 more walks to work on that before I start running again. 12 more days!

It's snowing here; started yesterday afternoon and kept going into the night and this morning. I shovelled when I got home last night and got some of the snow off the roof. This morning I was back out there clearing my paths once again. I imagine after work today i'll be doing more shovelling and roof raking. Winter is going to be painfully slow :(

My eating wasn't good yesterday. A co-worker bought me poppyseed cake with cream cheese icing for dessert after lunch. I don't know how to say no once it's already been gifted. Then in the afternoon I swapped my biscuits with cheesies. But my lunch was wonderful - cream of potato soup! Warmed me right up. And dinner was good as well, turkey sandwich loaded with spinach and red pepper, with some spicy fries (the last of them) and NO SNACKING! That's two days in a row, give me a medal!

Today i'm having yogurt with granola for breakfast, spinach salad and a bean burrito for lunch, snack of biscuits and dinner will be out with friends at a dinner theatre. I imagine they'll serve things like roast beef, salad, maybe perogies or potatoes of some kind. I'll go heavy on the salad ;)

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 12 lbs to go!

Kati on 11/18/2011:
Poppyseed is healthy! :) It's good to eat that from time to time. The cream soup must have been delicious indeed :). Snow, and cold weather scream for hot teas (GOOD!), hot soups (YUMMY!) and mulled wine (humm humm... :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulled_wine )! Great progress on no pain while walking. You're going to get there... we have to take our baby steps, extra patience, preservance. I do the same with my back. It has better days, such as worse ones but... one day I'll be 100% again. Or at least 99,9%.

Kati on 11/18/2011:
I just read an interesting article on wikipedia about restrictive diets. It says: "food restrictions in general may lead to hunger, cravings, food obsessions, social disruptions and social isolation" This is very true! I had/have all these synthoms and you know I've lost 130+ pounds since January 2010. One has to be careful.

~WI~ on 11/18/2011:
CONGRATULATIONS ON NO SNACKING!! And so happy to read no pain! Sorry about the snow, I am NOT looking forward to it here! Have a beautiful weekend!

Umpqua on 11/18/2011:
All your foods sound wonderful, and congrats on no snacking! That is awesome news that you aren't having pain, not so great on the snow - I know you have an even longer snowy season than we do here. I hope you have a nice weekend!

I didn't actually complete the whole 15 minutes of walking yesterday. My legs started hurting about 7 minutes into it, and I ended up quitting at 10 minutes and 0.5 miles in. Doesn't seem like it's getting better, does it?

I even walked inside, on a nice, spongy track. Stretched beforehand but was so discouraged afterwards that I forgot to stretch after I was done walking.

When I got home I lay on the couch reading and pulled a muscle in my shoulder. God Loves Me.

I dreamt about a whole slew of people last night; they were all in the same dream together which was seriously wierd. My Grandpa was one of them, and he sat beside me at a fancy supper and told people off LOL. Perhaps that mirrors exactly what I feel like doing these days ;)

I didn't even snack last night, just had a glass of diet coke with lots of crushed ice.

Today's plan: coffee, biscuits, spicy fries, possible bowl of soup from cafeteria, apple crumble, chicken and rice. A lot of this is leftovers that I need to finish up before the weekend.

I have a massage after work and then I will do my walking. This time, i'm going to slow down and see if that helps.

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 12 lbs to go!

Kati on 11/17/2011:
ahh, bad luck with legs and shoulder! Well, life has it ups and downs. You'll get better! :) xoxo

Hantty on 11/17/2011:
Sorry, I din't make it myself I bought it from the canteen but it looks pretty simple to me :) I reckon if you get some chicken breast, sweet chili sauce (which you can buy in a squeezey bottle thing like ketchup comes in), and a tortilla wrap (it was a flour wrap not a corn one though it probably doesn't matter) and then mix the chicken with the sauce, place it in the wrap and fold it like you would a normal tortilla or fajita. If you don't know how to fold it then just ask but I wont put that here 'cos this is already a very long message. Sorry if this doesn't help at all but I hope it does :)

When I got home from work, I changed quickly and did about 10 minutes of stretching. Then I went for my walk outside and boy was it cold out! Urgh, I hate winter! Beyond that misery, I also had some shin pain. Some? Well, almost the entire walk. But I persevered and made it 0.8 miles in 15 minutes. Another 10 minutes of stretching after that didn't help me one bit.

Then I made myself chicken and potatoes for supper and had a snack of cheese and crackers later on while reading yet another V.C. Andrews book. Boy, those books sure are strange. Anyways.

I guess i'll bring out my compression socks at some point and see if that helps the shin pain. Today i'll head to the multiplex to walk inside; maybe that will help as well. I know I know i'm being a negative old coot right now!

Yesterday I had plain coffee, tea biscuits, salad and potato casserole, chicken and potatoes, cheese and crackers. Go CARBS!

Today plan is plain coffee, tea biscuits (I still have many left!), 1/2 turkey wrap and butternut squash soup, big tossed salad for dinner. No cheese left in the house, so my snack is undetermined but you can bet i'll find something to eat ;)

Progress as of today: 8 lbs lost so far, only 12 lbs to go!

Thanks for comment! There are many beautiful places to hike in Scotland. Hope your shin pain goes away soon. Pain can really screw up our workouts!

Hope you feel better. Your chicken and potatoes sounds delicious! (Also the cheese and crackers. :-D) Take good care of yourself and stay warm.
