I'd just like to thank HoP for making me laugh so hard yesterday that I blew chocolate milk out of my nose.  Even now I need to make an effort to stop myself from LOL'ing everytime I think of her comment :)

I was all prepared yesterday to throw in a movie and watch it while I worked out.  One of the treadmills at the gym is equipped with its own DVD player and tv screen - just plug in a set of ear bugs and away you go.  Except that some guy (a.k.a. Treadmill Dude) was already running on it.  You have no idea how hard I tried to magic Treadmill Dude into moving to another treadmill.  I was really looking forward to watching that movie, but no amount of magic in the world was going to get his butt off the thing.  I got my revenge on him by using the treadmill beside him and staring at him the whole time he was working out.  I betcha i'm getting some "she's crazy" comments around town right about 9 hours ago.  No wonder no one wants to date me.

Anyways, I blame Treadmill Dude for my workout.

I ran for 10 minutes and had to stop because my shins were starting to hurt.  During this 10 minute period, Treadmill Dude jogged, got off, gabbed to his buddies, jogged, got off, gabbed.  Obviously you can see that I was not focused on my own workout.  For the next 10 minutes, I played with the speed on the treadmill, adding in walking parts because the shins just were not letting me run it out.  Treadmill Dude and his buddies got into a heated discussion regarding "The Wife's" baking, The Sauna, and a plethora of conversations that I was really trying not to listen to, although it was very entertaining.  It was almost as if they came to the gym the way some people go out for coffee - just for the conversation.  It was pretty funny, regardless :)

I am heading out to a dinner theatre tonight, so will not be working out.  I might try to take the dog for a walk after work, but it's snowing pretty heavily out there so i'm not sure if that'll happen.

I've been super busy lately and I know I haven't been commenting as much on your entries - I will try harder!  Have a great day today everyone :)

I don't usually go out of my way to eavesdrop on people in public, but once you hear one thing, or notice one thing--it's kinda hard to not keep listening:-) I used to get "crosstalk" occasionally on the phone line a few years ago. (It was like a party line, but they didn't know anyone was listening to the conversation.) I swear one time it sounded like the people knew someone was listening and just made up a bunch of sh*t as they went along.

That was totally going off the subject--I hope your shins are getting better!

oh wow, I dont think I'd ever admit an accident like that. HoP is one brave chick! :-)

lol at your adventures with Treadmill Dude. I totlly believe that some people go to the gym just to socialize. Personally, it drives me nuts because I go there for working my butt off. Keeping up with a conversation while pumping iron totally ruins my breathing rhythm. Ugh! Anyway, I hope you get the dvd treadmill next time!

I love to read about a woman REALLY FOCUSED ON HER TRAINING, you funny woman. I think that there is a Treadmill Dude at every gym, selfish people. But you do know that most people at the gym only look at themselves and not at other people don't you? I think those nasty thoughts and looks where wasted, it's a shame, he deserved them.:)

I feel extra pudgy today.  It's probably all in my head, because I didn't end up doing any exercise yesterday.

When I got home from work I iced my shins and dreamt about eating sushi.  My shins were really hurting and I wasn't sure if going to the gym was a good idea after all.  I really just wanted to eat sushi and then go to bed :)

So I texted running buddy and cancelled on her :( It was spur of the moment and you can bet I regretted doing it almost as soon as I pressed "send".  As I prepared my sushi take-out menu and was ready to call it in, a friend called to ask would I come over for supper?  They were eating baked cod with lots and lots of veggies.  Fish?  Or fish?  LOL.  Twist my rubber arm.  And after that I watched some episodes of Charmed with friends.  I didn't get to bed until 11pm.

I think the moral of the story here is that I really didn't have a clue as to what I wanted yesterday.  I must've changed my mind a few dozen times about miscellaneous things throughout the course of the day.  I was so tired at the end of the workday, but yet I stayed awake until well past my usual bedtime.  Such a strange day.

Which means I don't have a workout recap to post - gosh, whatever will I talk about?!

Tonight I am scheduled to run 28 minutes.  Wowzers.  It seems impossible, but for some reason it makes me smile :)

those days of feeling really unsure about making plans are ALWAYS the most challenging for me - feeling off base is not one of my strong suits. last week, it was 5 minutes until my kettlebells class and i almost considered not going, until my friend called me and begged me to come...sometimes it's so hard to stay with our commitments because its so easy to cancel on ourselves and others. also important is to allow ourselves some down-time as it were and just be with the non-doing. i hope you enjoyed food and time with friends!!

awww, feel better chica! i have had those days where i have felt just like you! today is sorta that way, i didn't exercise yesterday and just feel slow today. slow and and tired. but, i'm invigorated still - to exercise today! i miss it - the cardio and weights. especially weights since yesterday was the day i wanted to to them. however, today is a new day with extra time in it for exercise. so i know it can be a success.

congrats on your new upcoming job, too!

i just read how you had to stop running a few times...reminds me a recent day, when i had to poop so bad while i was taking a walk...i was far from my house, had eaten to much fiber one and fatty coconut milk...and this combo, along with everything else i had inhaled that day (a ton!) just would not calm down and my body couldn't hold it all in! the unthinkable happened! first time in who knows! first time in decades! yes, i totally pooped mid-walk! how terribe huh!? now i laugh, and realize the importance, perahps, of not overeating!? or, not overeating fiber one and coconut milk! HAHAHA.

I don't think it does you any harm to have a day off. The fact that you didn't know whether you were coming or going is an indication that you just needed to chill out. I am glad you didn't push yourself. Have fun!!

Good luck on your run tonight! I think it's ok that you didn't run last night. I was recently told by a friend who teaches at the gym as a side job that it's really good to take a day off for your body to rest every week.

I slept in this morning for work and had to call in and let everyone know.  How embarassing ;)

I went to the gym last night and did a 25 minute run.  Although, I had to stop three times while running.  The first time was after i'd already run 1 mile.  My ankles were starting to get really sore and I was having trouble lifting my feet up in order to run.  I took a short, one minute break and then continued running.  Then I stopped at miles 1.25 and 1.5 for the same type of break.  It wasn't the best workout, but you know what - I ran out the 25 minutes, went almost 2 miles, and that's pretty cool for not doing much for the last two days :)

Gym tonight is for either a strength or an ab workout.  Haven't decided which yet.

Eats for yesterday - oatmeal, chilli on a multi-grain thin x 2, chocolate in the afternoon, coffee, water, green monster after working out.

It feels like the days and weeks are just flying by.  That's ok with me - fly away until spring!

legcramps - Monday Nov 15, 2010

So I had some news the other day that I didn't have time to share with you ladies, but it's official - I'll be in a new job position at the end of the year!  I'm looking forward to the change; hoping it will mean a decrease in workload which I desperately need, and a bit of a change in daily activity as i'll have my own office and won't be stuck in the centre of everything.  That gets old after awhile!

Even though I am looking forward to this change, I know that it will come with some growing pains.  It will be a tough, busy, and sometimes frustrating few months so I thought i'd warn you if I seem to be grumpy or nasty on any particular day - that's probably the cause of it :)

I had a relatively quiet weekend, but managed to get into far too much junk food and didn't do any exercising.  My legs really needed the rest; yesterday my thigh muscles hurt so much that I took an extra warm bath to try and relieve some of the tension.  I feel much better today, so i'm going to take on a gym workout tonight and see how it goes.

What else?  I don't know - I have a silly grin pasted on my face and it's only Monday :)

I can remember that it is not fun to live in a place where it snows. However, I prefer to snuggle up in front of a fire than sweat under an aircondiioner anyday. Plus, is there anything more beautiful than waking up to fresh snowfall.

Beautiful! Apparently we had snow and ice while I was on vacation in Florida. We'll have our long, snowy season soon and I wouldn't trade it. I love the drastic seasons we have here in New England and I ski, so that's a bonus. Enjoy the white stuff!

Wow, that is so pretty. Being a SoCal native, I drool over scenes of real weather. :) I know living in it can be annoying at times, but it is still soooooo pretty! And I agree with Moogy, I'd rather bundle up than sweat 24/7.

I'm still feeling proud today :)

It's amazing that only a few days ago I was really having a rough time with my workouts and just... life in general.  Nothing seemed to be going my way.  My usual course of action when this happens, and the piece of advice I like to give when other people are emotionally drained and distressed - is when you're going to spiral downwards, if you ride it out eventually you'll come out of it.  This would normally take me a week or longer, but because of running buddy and the simple WILL to survive, I knocked that mood out of me within 12 hours by being PROUD of the fact that I was still moving, even when that age-old monster was trying to run me down. 

I might be physically drained this week because i've been to the gym every single day, but i'm far from mentally drained.  Every day, I keep begging myself to 'just try', just go a little further, just one more step.  I am tired, but i'm too happy to even acknowledge it :)

So yesterday was another strength training day - it went well; we breezed through the exercises and even had some time leftover to do a few silly stretches - thankfully the gym was empty so we weren't making fools of ourselves (not overly, anyways. i think they have cameras set up in there.).  Tonight is supposed to be a 25 minute run, but of course I will ice my shins and do only as much as I can do, and finish out the minutes on the stationary bike.

I suggest that if you're feeling down today, WILL yourself to do some sweating.  Let it out.  Vent.  Be angry, disappointed, bitter, and anything else that's going on.  Exhaust your body so that it can begin to rejuvenate again.

Good job. I'm glad you are powering through it. I don't listen to a ton of it, but there's a country music song (and I'm gonna butcher it) that says "if you're going through hell, just keep going, don't slow down...You might get out before the devil even knows you're there" and I like it, because sometimes when times are tough, you just have power through it. Way to not get discouraged and keep on working out!

I'm literally gushing with pride for myself today :)

I went back to the gym yesterday and running buddy and I decided that I would start the 25 minute run and when my shins started acting up again i'd get off the treadmill and finish it out on the stationary bike.  I made sure to ice my shins again beforehand.

I switched the display on the treadmill so that I couldn't see how many minutes had gone by, but I could see how far I was going in terms of distance.  I willed myself to look straight ahead at the wall, or outside the window, and I counted each song that blared through the large room.  Around song #4 I was starting to feel pretty winded, but my legs were good.  I was surprised that my lungs caught up to me before my shins did!  I toughed it out, and made it to song #6 before I took a look at where I was.  I had already run almost 1.5 miles!  I knew that I had only 1/2 a mile left to run, and I felt great!

I was able to finish out the run, and I even increased my pace for the last minute or so.  Just a shade under 2 miles in 25 minutes :)

Came home and iced my shins even though they weren't hurting.  I'm not taking any chances!!!

Today we're going to do some strength training, so should be running another mile or so and doing those wickedly evil leg exercises again.  Sounds like fun!

P.S. - I received a compliment the other day from someone I hadn't seen in about a month.  She said it looked like I was getting skinnier :)

Wow! Awesome work go!! Perhaps all that shin pain was pyschological...kidding of course! I think the way you used the treadmill display was a great idea as it kept you focused on the journey and not on the time for you to get to the finish line. :)

I'm going to be in meetings all day today, so I thought i'd run here and post real quick about what I did yesterday...

I went straight home after work and crafted two ice packs for my shins.  Then I sat on the couch, elevated my legs, and applied ice while I played on facebook.  Then it was time to go to the gym.  I had decided I would workout on the stationary bike instead of running, but running buddy thought we should do a strength workout so that's what we did.  Which means, I did a whole lot yesterday and I really hurt good today :)

In Summary:

1 mile run - 11 minutes, leg squats and presses and lunges, ball bends, step ups, and three wierd gym machine thingys.  We were there for almost an hour and didn't even finish the whole workout.  Whew.  The running was split into 5 minutes, then 3 minutes twice - so it didn't feel like I was doing too much.

Got back home and iced my shins again and did some laundry.  I went to bed at a reasonable hour, but boy am I tired this morning!  And sore!

I'm feeling slightly disappointed in my performance at the gym yesterday.  I've mostly gotten over it, but there's a bit of negativity still lingering around me today so I need to re-evaluate my goals and figure out what course of action is best for me.

Let me explain:  I went to the gym with running buddy to do our 25 minute run.  I walked on the treadmill for a few minutes, then got off and stretched.  Started running at 4.7mph.  I had to stop after 10 minutes because my shins were HUR.TING.  It was awful.  They were burning and tingling and my ankles were sore.  I got off the treadmill and walked around a bit, did a few more stretches and got back on to start running again.  Stopped after just a few minutes.  I just couldn't do it.  My body was telling me to stop.  I was SO disappointed!  I walked out the 25 minutes until running buddy was finished her run, then left the gym and went home for half an hour before heading to a meeting.  By the time the half an hour was over, I felt fine and that disappointed me even more!  That I could feel so much better within half an hour of feeling that kind of pain!  You've no idea how badly I wanted to return to that gym and finish that run.  Of course, I knew that if I did, the pain would simply return and what I needed to do was let my legs recover.

It went so badly that I seriously considered scrapping the whole idea of running.  I don't feel that way today though.  I feel even more determined to figure out why i'm hitting that proverbial wall and find a way to break through it.  It might mean i'll have to regress and move backwards in the program a week or two.  I don't know.  I need to evaluate this and figure it out.

So, all in all, not the best day of my life yesterday :(

I am struggling today with the way I feel about myself, trying to take care of myself so that I can reach my goals.  It's patience that I need right now.  Patience and determination.  I know I can do it!

Sorry about your running disappointment. Don't be so hard on yourself; if you hurt, you hurt. Your body's talking to you. Perhaps you can find some other exercise in the meantime. No need to make yourself miserable when you're trying to do something good for yourself. Hang in there! :0)

Shoes--that's usually been the culprit when I've had shin issues. They're either worn out or the heel portion isn't high enough in relation to the toe portion. Don't know if you've ever been fitted in a running shoe specialty store, but it's worth the time/effort/price if you want to be a healthy runner.

Others may disagree, but I don't think pain and running/jogging EVER go hand in hand. EVER! It means you're doing too much, you're out of shape cardio- or strength-wise or your shoes are shot or don't fit your gait.

Sorry about the running problem. I agree with biscottibody, if there is pain then there is something going on. You can't force that. Hopefully it will take care of itself, but better not to force the issue. Take care.

I am thinking that maybe your legs are just not cut out for running, how about speed walking, I wonder if that would help. It is almost running but not quite. Or maybe just power walking. Please don't feel you have failed, you haven't, your legs just seem to be giving you a message and it's not the kind of thing you can ignore. Chin up, you are doing well.

Yikes, that sounds frustrating! I agree with biscottibody that shoes could be an issue. I'm not much of a runner, but I have friends who have had issues with that. Maybe you should try taking a day off between runs more often? You can still workout, but maybe try something different, like a walk, or dancing or aerobics? I hope the "legcramps" settle themselves out ok!

It was a really nice weekend, beautiful weather - almost all our snow melted away!

On Saturday morning, running buddy and I did our 25 minute run.  It was really difficult and I felt like quitting a lot.  But I didn't, and once it was over I felt really good about accomplishing it!  So, we're officially up to 25 minute runs now!  For me, that's about 2 miles, give or take.  Mostly take :)

We were going to do strength training on Sunday, but my body was beat from Saturday's workout and I just needed a day off.  Ironically enough, once it was decided to take a rest day, I got my butt off the couch and did 2 hours of much needed yardwork.  It was actually sort of fun, and I broke a sweat too :)  I still have more to do before the snow flies again, so hopefully i'll be able to fit it in this week sometime.

Tonight is another 25 minute run, so i'm trying hard to psyche myself up for it.  I will continue at the same pace in hopes that perhaps tonight it will feel a little easier.

I can't believe I can't even taste the spinach in those green smoothies.  What a great way to get the veggies in.  I had a big serving of smoothie for supper last night :)

Great job with all your running and the yardwork certainly counts as exercise too! :)

i can see where you are coming from with your thoughts on that quote...i didn't even think of it that way. i definitely don't interpret it that way though...when i heard it, it meant to me, that the gross, processed fast food would not taste as good as it would feel if i were to not eat it...in my mind set that is... i definitely did not mean to offend anyone though and i apologize that people may think of it that way... :)

i know! i wish it was for a week...i am trying to convince our meditation instructor for do it for a longer period of time soon. awesome job on the running - and SO glad you love the green smoothies:) they are magic!

I always love reading your posts because you are so descriptive about your runs...I am not supposed to run anymore because knee, gymnastics did a number on them :( That was by far my favorite form of exercise

25 minutes is awesome! I find your running seriously inspirational. Even during times in my life where I have been pretty "fit," I've been a rotten runner. Seeing you improve with all your hard work makes me feel like one day (though not today) I could be one too :)
