legcramps - Friday Nov 05, 2010

Weight: 168.5

Ah, Friday!  All in the same breath, it feels like this week has both flown by and crawled along.  So glad it's Friday and I have no plans for the weekend besides what i've chosen to do!  Yay!

I made it through the running workout last night!  It consisted of a 10 minute run, 3 minute walk, and 10 minute run.  This is the one I failed to complete on Tuesday, but after a day of rest my legs were better able to carry my weight on the treadmill :0 and I managed to finish without too much hassle.  At one point, I did feel like stopping; my left foot was losing feeling and my shins were starting to really hurt.  But I struggled through with the help of RB and sheer determination.  Tonight I think I will take the dog for a walk, do some yoga, and ice my shins!

Tomorrow morning RB and I will be attempting to complete a 25 minute run.  And on Sunday the strength training will begin.

Yesterday's Eats - oatmeal, ham sandwich with baked brussel sprouts, whole wheat pasta with lean ground beef and cheesy pasta sauce, mocha, water, hot chocolate during movie night with friends :)

A big calorie day, but i'm okay with that so long as it gives me the energy I require to continue to get those workouts in.

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

Have a GREAT DAY!!!! :)))

Have a great weekend. Hugs

moogy on 11/05/2010:
Oh well done, they could just carry me off in a coffin after all that. You will definitely need extra fuel for all the workouts.

just42day on 11/06/2010:
You're doing great with all your running. Hope the rest of the weekend is a good one for you! :)

great workout!

Weight: 168.5

After my insight into human behaviour on Tuesday ;) and after a couple of things happened at work yesterday (which I will have to tell you about another day), I feel like a lot of the weight of the world has been released from my shoulders.

I should have already learned that when in the midst of turmoil, we often don't even realize we are there until we are either pulled out of it, or forced to stand up to it.  I'm quite surprised that my shoulders haven't been lodging near my ears for the past few months.  Regardless, i've had to do some "standing up" lately, and since hindsight is 20/20 i've noticed that i'd been hanging onto some ideas and efforts that are not mine.  Mine, but not MINE.

Does that make sense?!  For example, my mother would have a great amount of influence in my life seeing as she raised me and all that.  Some of her values and motivations have become mine.  But they're not MINE.

I'm not saying i'm dropping everything and am going on a sabbatical to figure out what it is I want to do.  And i'm not saying it all has to do with my mother - she is simply an example.  Rather, i'd love to stop and think about the things that I do sometimes, and decipher whether i'm doing these things for me or for some other reason or purpose.  I like to make people happy.  That will never change.  But perhaps learning to have patience with my own journey in life will help me to be truly helpful in someone else's life.

I went for a long walk with the dog yesterday, then added 30 minutes of yoga afterwards.  I'll be running tonight at the gym - wish me luck with the last interval session of the program!!

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

2luvself on 11/04/2010:
Those are some wise words. Sometimes we have to go outside ourselves and look inwards to find out what is truly the right path for us. Good luck with your journey. Sometimes it can be hard and you might not like what you find some of the time but this journey is one that is always worth exploring in the end.

V on 11/04/2010:
Funny that Moogy and I were speaking about something very similar on her post last night! :) Good luck tonight! Not that you need it!

Maria7 on 11/04/2010:
Sounds like you're going through a time of introspection. That is always good and something everyone needs to do from time to time. :-D

moogy on 11/04/2010:
It is always a good thing to think about why we do the things we do. Motivation is always a key in how we live our lives. If you can work out where your's is coming from it will help you understand yourself and decide if you want to change your behaviour. Just because your mom did it one way doesn't mean that it works for you of course, it doesn't mean it is bad either. (I have to stick up for the mom's):)

nita51 on 11/05/2010:
Hi Legcramps, Your post was so insightful and really hit home for me as well. Take Care of yourself. You are a very special and loving person, Wishing you the desires of your heart, Take Care. :) :) :)

chidogs on 11/05/2010:
That is very true! And I never thought of it that way. Thank you for a eye opening message. You take care and good luck with your efforts.

legcramps - Wednesday Nov 03, 2010

Weight: 168.5

I had a breakthrough yesterday, but let me start at the beginning:

My mind was set on heading to the gym at 6pm yesterday evening to go for a run.  This run was to be the last interval run of the program.  From then on afterwards, I would be running consecutive minutes without any walk breaks.  RB (Running Buddy) texted me at 5, saying she wouldn't be able to make it to the gym as she had to work late.  I was very sorry she wouldn't be there, because a) it was our last interval run and something to be celebrated! and b) i'm never as motivated as when we're running together.  But I suited up and headed for the gym anyways, intent on getting this workout over with.

I felt heavy during the warm-up walk and started to doubt my abilities.  Three other girls were there, and they were running and running and running away and they intimidated me.  I started out strong anyways; I really wanted to increase my pace and with two easy 10 minute runs, I thought it would be no problem.

Problem:  My legs were beat.  b.e.a.t.  I had no issue whatsoever with my cardio - although I was sweating like there was no tomorrow, my breathing was regular and I doubt my heartrate went much over 165.  I just couldn't swing one foot in front of the other.

So I slowed down, and that didn't work.  So I sped up, and that didn't work.  I finally finished the first 10 minute run, and took my pace down to a walk for 3 minutes.  My legs did not recover.  When it came time to run again, I did so for 2 minutes, then had to stop.  Then a minute, then stopped.  Start.  Stop.  Over and over until I finally reached the end of the workout.  I hobbled out of the building with the shame of failure hanging onto my shirt tails.

Solution:  When I got home, I iced my shins for a long time.  I took a nice warm bath, and thought about my predicament.  Was it just an off day?  Do I need to add strength training?  Was it too much, too soon?  And here's where the breakthrough came to me.  I realized it wasn't always about having a great workout.  I figured out that it was okay to fail once in a while because that is what brings us closer to our goals - it's what motivates us and gives us determination to follow through.  I knew I could bounce back from this and move on, try again.

I've never been the type to be a positive influence in my own life.  I've berated myself constantly for not meeting my own expectations.  But I think the past year has taught me a very valuable lesson that I don't know I truly believed before:  I can do anything in the world I set my mind to.

I've set my mind to trying the run again on Thursday evening.  I will also be starting some strength training exercises.  If you know of any, please forward them to me.  And tonight, I will be doing some yoga.  Namaste my friends :)  Stay Strong.

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

loveray on 11/03/2010:
WOOO love breakthrough entries. this is the kind of self-awareness that is achieved by listening intently within and being loving enough toward yourself to accept anything that comes. So excited for you!

chidogs on 11/03/2010:
Wise words. Good for you. And thanks for sharing the insight.

Umpqua on 11/03/2010:
Very inspirational entry! But you knew that about yourself before, right? Your nick on here is legcramps, afterall, and you've been on here for years keeping up the good fight. I think you have always believed in your abilities but now you have the confidence that comes from within. I've been very emotional this week and you're making me weepy, in a good way. Have a wonderful evening!

moogy on 11/03/2010:
It is the striving that counts legcramps. You have done so well with your running, if only our bodies were machines we could be predictable everyday. But wouldn't that be boring. You are wonderful.

hopingforhealth on 11/03/2010:
That is an amazing a-ha moment! I'm so happy for you! It just matters that you keep trying, not that you are perfect and it is so hard to remember that. I struggle with being hard on myself too. Seriously, good for you!

V on 11/03/2010:
That was pretty deep legcramps! Alot of times we overlook our breakthrough moment(or chose not to see or hear it) happy that you didn't ignore it!!!! Well done :)

Weight: 168.5

I'm happy to report that I ran almost 28 miles last month!  I'm hoping to better this number for the month of November...

I made it to the gym last night for a run.  It was a lot harder than usual, i'm not sure if it's because I took two days off or because of my lack of water intake over the weekend.  I completed it though, so that's good.  Hopefully tonight's workout will be easier!

Eats for yesterday:  Oatmeal, coffee, water, chili, ham sandwich, and then I was a snackaholic during a movie I watched with a friend.  We also experimented with two different types of slushie drinks - one with orange juice and one with coffee.  Both were very good!

P.S. - Ham Sandwiches.  Yum.  Especially when you haven't eaten bread in. like. forever.

P.S.S. - Ham Sandwiches - flax bread, pressed garlic and caesar dressing, mustard, spinach leaves, roast ham.  Yum.

Do you know what i'm eating for lunch today?  Here's a hint:  Yum.

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

Great job w/your running! :)

KathyBlue on 11/02/2010:
wow, great! 28 miles, a lot! :) I think exercise is sometimes harder, I notice the same at tennis. It just has to do with something I haven't been able to figure out/identify yet!

loveray on 11/02/2010:
good work on the running!! its awesome to start that habit. have a wonderful day!!:) love your PS:)

sweetpea1977 on 11/02/2010:
hahaha, YUM! That ham sandwich does sound delicious and more exciting that the typical (boring) ham sandwich.

Great job on the running! You ran over a marathon in one month. Thats incredible!!

Loveray posted a bunch of green smoothie recipes in the forums. I actually came up with a bunch while the site was down. I'll post my concoctions in the comments section of loveray's recipe post. Anyway, let me know what you think of the smoothies. They are an easy way to get your fruits and a veggie in for the day!

legcramps - Monday Nov 01, 2010

Weight: 168.5

So I bit the bullet and weighed myself on the 31st, Sunday morning.  I know that i've toned down a bit since the beginning of October, so some of this 'new' weight must be related to muscle gain from all the running.  That's what i'm telling myself, anyways ;-)

Friday night was my last run, and it was 20 minutes straight of running.  I slowed down a bit in order to finish the whole 20 minutes, but I don't think I needed to because I still had lots of gas left in the tank and even ran another 3 minutes afterwards!  It felt great to accomplish this, and only three more weeks of the program and i'll be running 30 minutes, three times a week!

I felt really good on Friday too.  I walked for 5 minutes to warm up, then got off the treadmill and did some leg stretches and I really think that helped a lot.  I felt no pain throughout the entire run.

On Saturday I drove into the city to watch the broadway musical "Mama Mia!" with my mom.  There was a lot of sitting that day, and I stiffened up a LOT.  My right hip was hurting so much that it was physically uncomfortable to sit and I had to sit for over 10 hours on Saturday!  Otherwise it was a good day and the musical was really awesome.  When I got home I had an advil and went to sleep; I was fine on Sunday.

Well that's about it!  I am planning on running tonight at the gym - total of 18 minutes.

Have a great day!

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 11/01/2010:
I hate sitting for that long too, I get the restless legs syndrome. I bet you have built some muscle and that accounts for the weight shift. You are doing great with the running, don't worry about it!

getmebackto150 on 11/01/2010:
you are doing awesome with your running!!! Congrats on 23 minutes that is such a good accomplishment!

sweetpea1977 on 11/01/2010:
Yea, Im betting you gained some serious leg muscles from all that running you do. :)

As for the pancakes, its pretty simple. I started by following a regular pancake recipe on the "healthy heart" bisquick box. I cut back on the milk (I think it called for 1.25 cups and I added a cup), used eggbeaters instead of an egg, and added about a cup of canned pumpkin puree and a hefty sprinkle (probably about a tsp) of pumpkin pie spice. They were thick and fluffy and super delish with a tiny splash of real maple syrup!

loveray on 11/01/2010:
congrats on gaining muscle!!! thats always a good thing. happy november:)

V on 11/01/2010:
Congrats to you my friend :) Great job!!! Yes sometimes you have to pay homage to the "Party Gods" now and again!LOL I am so happy i don't feel like crap!!!! have a great day!

tangalyn on 11/01/2010:
ur doing great, keep it up :D

hollybelle on 11/01/2010:
I don't sit well for longn either - but I'll bet the play was good!

hopingforhealth on 11/01/2010:
Way to go with the running! That's a long time (at least to me!)

Maria7 on 11/01/2010:
Probably is a lot of muscle weight. You are VERY active! :-)

selina on 11/02/2010:
Oh, I LOVE Mama Mia!!! You are doing great with the exercise, wow! Have a great day!

legcramps - Thursday Oct 28, 2010

Weight: 163.5

If anyone was wondering why I haven't been updating my weight, it's because I haven't been weighing myself obsessively for the last few weeks.  My plan is to weigh myself at the end of the month, and I will update the above weight then.  I have a feeling it will be higher, but we'll see.

Went running yesterday on the treadmill at the gym, 1.6 miles in 21 minutes again but this time I added an extra minute of running (16 minutes) :-)

The first 8 minute run went by pretty quickly, no issues.  I slowed my speed down a bit so that I would be sure to finish, and that helped a lot.  The second 8 minute run was a little more difficult, but I was able to finish without too much hassle.

Eats for yesterday - coffee, oatmeal, pasta with breaded chicken, 3 litres of water, two glasses iced tea and I can't think of anything else.  no wonder I still felt hungry last night...

I've requested the day off work tomorrow because I need to prepare for a trip to the city on Saturday, and there are a few other things I should probably get done as well (a few? that's an understatement).  I've been noticing that I have unspent energy on the days I don't get in a workout, so I might go to the gym tonight and repeat the workout I did yesterday.  I can't use this energy doing something around the house because it's more of an anxiously energetic feeling and I can only get rid of it if I do a hard a$$ workout.  I guess it's my own darn fault - I asked the Lord to give me more energy but wasn't specific enough ;-)

Have a great day today!

Progress as of today: 11.5 lbs lost so far, only 8.5 lbs to go!

sweetpea1977 on 10/28/2010:
Good for you on not getting obsessed with the scale. There is no need to let a number dictate your mood every single day!

I hope you enjoy your intense workout tonight!

just42day on 10/28/2010:
Great job w/your running! :)

KathyBlue on 10/28/2010:
I think this is the correct way of seeing the weight issue. I don't weigh myself every single day either. There are people who do it, like just42day, but I think I wouldn't be able to bear the feeling of seeing ups and downs. I just want to see, like once a week, or once in every two weeks, a LOSS. Great job w the exercise, I'm proud of you!!! :)

loveray on 10/28/2010:
i havent been weighing myself either - i cant deal with seeing the # every day - as soon as i get more kettlebells workouts under my belt, im hoping ill feel good enough to weigh. good luck and much love!

moogy on 10/28/2010:
Yes, you do have to be careful what you pray for. I used to pray for strength and got challenges to strengthen me!!!! Our God has a sense of humour I think. Now I only ask for grace and gratitute and haven't got into too much trouble with those. I am so impressed with your running, I am so proud of you, I can't imagine how fabulous you must be feeling about your success. Well done.

hopingforhealth on 10/28/2010:
Way to go with the running! I have been doing a lot more aerobic, but I doubt I could run that long yet. Enjoy your hard a$$ workout :P

V on 10/28/2010:
Just so you know I happen to love tending to the yard and garden! You don't even have to feed me much either!!! LOL

biscottibody59 on 10/28/2010:
Nice pic there!

Gah, we haven't even had a light frost yet, though it is supposed to be in the low 40sF (4C) tomorrow night--no big deal in your neck of the woods I imagine--and I was already thinking of putting my heated mattress pad on the bed for the season:-)

Keep up the good work with the running--it's sooo worth the effort!

selina on 10/29/2010:

legcramps - Wednesday Oct 27, 2010

Weight: 163.5

Above pic is me wearing my new outfit I bought for a friend's wedding a few weeks ago.

Wow, so... Holy Snow.  Due to the high winds, some yards have up to 3 feet of snow blocking their driveways; it's definitely been chaotic for the last two days.  We've had cars in the ditches, closed highways, weather warnings, you name it.  My stupid sump pump stopped working again, so I need to remember to fix that later so that I don't get any water in the basement if all this snow decides to melt.  Which, by the way, would be fine with me because I still have CARROTS and POTATOES in my garden and my BBQ is still sitting out on the deck!!!  Yikes!  Talk about not being prepared!

Yesterday after work I spent about 20 minutes outside shoveling.  Froze my butt off in the cold wind, and really didn't feel like I accomplished anything.  I also bought myself a gym membership, so I was able to get my run in on the treadmill which was actually a lot harder than I thought it would be.  Everyone says that running outside is much more difficult than running on a treadmill, but that wasn't so for me yesterday.  As soon as I stepped on the thing, my shin splints started acting up and it was quite painful for the rest of the workout.  I iced my shins as soon as I got back home, and that seems to have helped a lot.  I did the required 21 minutes with 15 of it running and went around 1.7 miles.  After only one workout on the treadmill, I have decided that i'd rather run outdoors.  This means I must move somewhere much warmer.

Eats for yesterday - bagel with PB, mocha, coffee, water, pasta with breaded chicken, one serving low sodium chips with spinach dip.

Today's run calls for two 8 minute runs with a 5 minute walk in between.  Go me!

Progress as of today: 11.5 lbs lost so far, only 8.5 lbs to go!

loveray on 10/27/2010:
I hear there is snow all across the country - down south it is still unseasonably warm and just gross all around - plus monsoon type rains! sending lots of healing your way.

sweetpea1977 on 10/27/2010:
3 feet of snow, yikes! I hope it melts so you can gain access to your garden and grill.

I don't have much experience on treadmills, but I can imagine it hurting my shins as well. I rather run outside! The only exception is maybe using an indoor running track.

selina on 10/27/2010:
Snow!!!! wow! Take care and stay safe! So, you are also a gardener - I love gardening, but I mainly do flowers. I've no idea how to grow potatoes and carrots, although that sounds FUN!

hollybelle on 10/27/2010:
Burrrrr! I feel better about my weather here! Stay warm and make sure your outside hoses don't freeze! Good run on the treadmill! That's the spirit!

moogy on 10/27/2010:
I can remember digging my step father out of our downward angled driveway at 4.30am in the morning with snow banked up to 8 foot in my pj's when I was a child in England so I know what it is like. However, isn't this all a bit early in the season?? You have my sympathy for now, I will probably envy you in a couple of months when I am sweating like a you know what!! I hope you can get out and clear up a little before the next blast hits!!

legcramps - Tuesday Oct 26, 2010

Weight: 163.5

Feels good to be back!

I've been doing a lot of running since Oct 13th.  I ran eight times since then, in fact.  My last run was on Saturday, where I tried to beat my previous 5k time of 39:27.  I came in at 37:20, so I shaved two minutes off my time in one month!  I'm going to try this again towards the end of November and see if I can do it in under 36 minutes.

I was scheduled to run yesterday after work, but due to either a) an allergic reaction to the vast amounts of dairy i've been eating for the last week, or b) the stomach flu, I was unable to motivate myself to get the running in.  I am feeling loads better today, so i'm hoping to get the missed run in after work.

It is snowing here! Yuck!  I guess that means I will have to buy myself a gym key and get most of my runs in on the treadmill from now on.

In other news, my friends set me up with A.  It wasn't a date - we just sort of hung out with another couple; supper and a movie kind of thing.  I think it went well, I had fun flirting and goofing around.  It was just nice to feel like I was back in the game, LOL!

Progress as of today: 11.5 lbs lost so far, only 8.5 lbs to go!

hollybelle on 10/26/2010:
Great job on running! Yay for having fun and feeling like you're back in the game.

Well, thank the Lord that i'm feeling better than I was yesterday.  That Grump was a major pain in the butt!

I didn't have a good day at work yesterday.  I kept wanting to put my jacket on and leave, I was just so frustrated with everything and everyone.  I talked to my boss for a few minutes though, and that helped a bit.  I am grateful for my job, I just don't like it sometimes.

So I was perfectly willing to go running right after work yesterday, to burn off some of that negative energy.  My running buddy is under the weather, so I leashed the dog, started up the couch 2 5k program on my phone, and was on my way.  Week 2, day 1 went well.  My calves were burning a little throughout the workout, but probably because I didn't stretch beforehand.  At certain times it felt like I might explode from effort, but I was always fully recovered before having to start a run section.  And the dog had a blast!  9 minutes running, total workout took me over 40 minutes because I walked to the park and back home, which takes about 15 minutes.  I think close to 3 miles.  Just under.

Changed and had something to eat, then went to the theatre with some girlfriends to watch "Eat, Pray, Love".  Slightly slow-moving, but I thought the plot was right up my alley.  Loved it!

This morning I ate overnight oats for breakfast.  Yum.  1/3 cup rolled oats; 1/3 cup milk; 1 tblspn peanut butter.  Let stand overnight.  Then I added honey granola to it.  BAM!  You can add whatever you want to it - bananas, strawberries, bran, flax seed, pumpkin, whatever!  It's very filling as well.  I couldn't even finish it all.

Yesterday Eats - turkey, potatoes, carrots, stuffing, pumpkin pie, water, iced tea.

I don't know what i'm going to do for exercise today.  I'd like to run, so we'll see how my legs are feeling later today.

Progress as of today: 11.5 lbs lost so far, only 8.5 lbs to go!

legcramps - Tuesday Oct 12, 2010

Weight: 163.5

I think someone peed in my cornflakes this morning. (it's just a phrase to explain the fact that i'm feeling extremely grumpy and on edge today).

In many ways, this past weekend really sucked.  Friday night was fun - I watched a movie at a friend's place and then we did some Wii Fit activities (all the boxing made my arms hurt for days afterwards), but I also munched on too much junk food.  Saturday I did a little cleaning, then my Dad and my Aunt showed up for a visit, then I went to a friend's for a wiener roast.  "A" did not show up; said he had family committments.  I did okay on food Saturday, but horribly on liquids!  Not enough water and far too much alcohol!  It wasn't a fun night, partly because I was discouraged that "A" didn't come, and partly because the people that DID eventually show up were... let's just say I did NOT appreciate being hit on by a man twice my age that was looped all the way to his toes.  Sunday was spent on the couch because of the late night on Saturday.  I also managed to eat my fridge on Sunday.  On Monday mom had thanksgiving dinner and... that's it.  I ate a lot, and didn't run any of it off.

Some eats from the weekend:  mashed potatoes, baked salmon, chips and dip, cheesies, mushroom burger with salad, hot dog, a few marshmallows, chips again, walnut and chocolate-chip pancakes with syrup, turkey, stuffing, beans, carrots, blah, blah, blah, etc.

And today, I feel totally sorry for myself and I can't get out of this funk!  It's because of all the turkey, i'm sure of it.  And I even brought leftovers home!

Ok, well, I didn't run yesterday and I should have.  Oh well.  I still did three days of running last week, and that's OK.  It's OK.  And I can do three days of running this week.  And that will be OK too.  Whew.

Sometimes it's really difficult to tell yourself to let go of the past.

I downloaded the Couch to 5k program onto my blackberry, so will try that out tonight - I think i'll start at week 2.

Progress as of today: 11.5 lbs lost so far, only 8.5 lbs to go!

KathyBlue on 10/12/2010:
AHHHH Ok! :) In Hungary we say at the end of the watermelon season that the watermelons aren't that good anymore because St. Peter (I think it's him or some other St., sorry if I offended you St. Peter..) peed into the watermelons... Well, he must drink a lot ;)

Wow your walnut chocolate pancakes (yum!) and turkey and dressing sounded especially delicious! Hope you are having good day today and feel better. :-)

Umpqua on 10/12/2010:
Hey, it was a holiday weekend, you did OK and enjoyed some great foods. And turkey can be a downer, it's been chemically proven :) I love the disclaimer about your cornflakes - LMAO! Hope you have a good one.

moogy on 10/12/2010:
I hope that you are feeling a little more like your normal self soon. I am not even going to ask about the walnut chocolate pancakes, they sound deadly but delicious. I hope that today is a good day for you.
