Another pound down!  Am finally able to fit into a "large" opposed to a "X-large" top :)  Have been under the weather the past couple days (with allergies & sinus problems)...I was tempted to use my "slightly" ailing health as an excuse to overeat.  But, I resisted the temptation; I'm finally starting to see results and don't want to undo ANY progress.

Slept through breakfast

LUNCH: Lean/boneless pork chop (120 cals), wheat hamburger bun (80 cals), wheat Sun Chips (130 cals) = 330 calories

DINNER: Boneless/skinless chicken breast (120 cals), Shake & Bake Coating (40 cals), Chicken flavored Rice A Roni (190 cals), peas (80 cals), Lite bread (70 cals) = 500 calories

SNACK: Fruit smoothie (200 cals), Low-fat chips (130)

TOTAL CALORIES FOR TODAY: 1160...

Progress as of today: 14 lbs lost so far, only 24 lbs to go!

Took a nice hot bath, cleaned house, worked on a couple of projects that were in progress, & managed to get out of the funk I was in.  Thanks for the encouraging comments ya'll (hugz)!  I ended up going to the gym; hit the treadmill before working on my upper body & abs.  Then I went to the movies with a friend.  Had a good food day as well :)

BREAKFAST: Mixed fruit (100 calories)

LUNCH: Spinich salad with grilled chicken (200 calories)

SNACK: Tangerine (35 calories)

DINNER: Tortilla Crusted Tilapia (250 calories), Garlic flavored potatoes (160 calories),  small tossed salad (50 calories) = 460

SNACK: 1 c. ice cream (260 calories), wheat snack crackers (150 calories), cookies (130)

TOTAL CALORIES FOR TODAY = 1335

Progress as of today: 13 lbs lost so far, only 25 lbs to go!

In 2000, I was the heaviest I had ever been (339 lbs).  I did manage to lose a few of those pounds by the time I created this diary (New Year's day of 2001).  At that time (2001), I was 312 pounds and felt overwhelmed & discouraged each time I considered how much weight I STILL needed to lose. 

Four years later, I found myself bouncing between 164-170 pounds and for the first time in my life, I felt good about the way I looked in my clothes.  I was finally able to shop at regular clothing stores rather than specialty shops such as Lane Bryant, Catherines, etc'. And, I no longer had to select garments that "covered up" rolls of fat, big hips, etc'. I had lots of energy and all of the health problems I had suffered most of my adult life, disappeared (Diabetes, high blood pressure, etc')..

Later, a series of tragedies began unfolding in my life.  I did all I could to cope but ultimately I resorted back to self-soothing with food. And, of course, I gained some of the weight back. When I hit 208 pounds, I cried and tried to muster the courage to get back to 170. 

Though I've lost 13 of the pounds I re-gained, some days I find myself feeling JUST as overwhelmed as I did back in 2001.  One would think, after losing 144 lbs, that I wouldn't feel so discouraged about this last 25...but for some reason, I do.  

That's just where I am right now :(

I would stop thinking about the things that are making you feel overwhelmed. Train yourself in positive thinking. When you catch yourself thinking "OMG I still have 25 to lose! How am I going to do this? I'm such a failure!", answer back "this is just one day, and I can do this for just one day". Positive affirmation can go a long way in giving you the determination you need to succeed.

Hey, Sister. That was the person you were. This who you are now. I don't have to tell you about lifestyle changes. You're living proof of that. But that's really who we are. We all change from time to time. And its not always a good change. Since I've been on here you've been one of the many people that really encourage me. And I don't want you to stop. I think we all feel a little of what you do. And we probably feel the same way sometimes. I just want you to know, that we are here for you. We're all on the same path. And we're gonna pick each other up if we stumble.

I've been reading articles on weight-loss and from what I can gather, it's important to find a way of eating, that doesn't result in my feeling deprived.  When I'm NOT trying to lose weight, I eat pizza, burgers, chili dogs, pastas, desserts, etc'.  However, in the past, when I've attempted to lose weight, I've resorted to eating things that I normally would not eat (tons of bland foods, too many salads, etc').  In time, I felt deprived and ended up over-indulging with foods I craved--yet, denied myself.  

That is what I am trying to do differently this time (find a way of eating that I'll be able to maintain for the rest of my life, without feeling as if I'm dieting).  I'm still eating many of the foods I ate, while gaining weight, except, I'm controlling portions and choosing healthier alternatives:

Chili Dogs:

  • Turkey Chili (no beans)
  • Oscar Meyer low-fat hotdogs
  • Lite Buns

Pizza (make these in the toaster oven)

  • Turkey Pepperoni
  • Bagel Thins or low calorie bread(s)
  • Low-fat mozerella cheese
  • Lite hotdog buns

Pasta

  • Prepackaged, one-serving portions of various pasta

Burgers

  • Laura's Lean pre-made hamburger patties
  • Lite hamburger buns
  • Low-fat swiss cheese
  • Honey BBQ sauce

Fries

  • I stick to portion sizes (can usually have 17 fries for about 160 calories)

Ice Cream

  • Luckily, there are many lite ice creams on the market with a variety of delicious flavors (control my portion size)

Chips

  • There are lots of chips that are low in calories; I can pretty much eat any brand or flavor provided I control my portions

So far, this is working well for me.  I do not feel as if I'm dieting & I'm losing weight.  Yesterday was a good food day: 

BREAKFAST: 3 slices turkey bacon (75 cals), 2 slices Lite wheat toast (70 cals), 1 cup sliced strawberries (53 cals), & 2 Tbsp low-fat whipped topping (20 cals) = 218

SNACK: Fig newtons (180 cals)

LUNCH: 1 serving ham (110 cals), Lite hamburger bun (80 cals), chips (140) = 330

SNACK: 2 tangerines (70 cals)

DINNER: Hormel Chicken & Noodles (240 cals)

SNACKS: 1 tangerine (35 cals), 1/2 c. ice cream (120 cals), bell pepper & onion dip (60 cals) = 215

Total caloric intake for today = 1253

Progress as of today: 13 lbs lost so far, only 25 lbs to go!

Glad you're finding satisfying substitutions. I'm a serious mayo person (actually Miracle Whip) but I've found that I can use mostly non-fat plain yogurt and add just a small amount of Miracle Whip and it gives the tang I like. Hope you have another great food day today!

Love your strategy and I'm with you on the short term goals! It's conscious decision making that makes the difference. For me, I eat the pizza, but I am doing whole wheat or multi grain crust. And I never was a pasta craver, but when I have it I use multi grain there too. I had to give up the sugar-that has been the root of my problems. I gave in and ate small amounts (just a bite of cake, never a piece) but I had something sweet every day for 2 weeks. It made it so hard to quit again, but as of yesterday I WILL stay away from it. I shouldn't feel deprived because I have developed a bunch of sugar-free desserts, I just have to be prepared and have them on hand. Good Luck and you WILL reach your goal with good decision making!!

Thanks for the encouragement and support. While I am almost 1/2 way to my mini-goal, it is, unfortunately, a real 'mini'. Will need to achieve many, many, many more mini-goals after that. But thankfully it is going in the right direction. Have a good one.

The past year or so, I've repeatedly experienced the frustration of pulling garments from my closet only to discover-when I attempt to get dressed--that the blouse or pants (or both) are too small.   I can easily spend 30 minutes or more, each day, trying to find clothes that both fit & match. 

Today I went through my closets & removed all clothing that did NOT fit & stored them in plastic tubs.  I was shocked to discover I had outgrown every pair of (size 14) pants I own (except the STRETCHY ones purchased in plus-size stores).  I fit comfortably in size 16 (sigh).  I honestly thought I was a size 14 and that there were only a few pairs that were too snug.  But, that clearly isn't the case!! Wake up call, hello?????????

Initially, this discouraged me but the the more I thought about it, I realized this is only temporary.  If I continue to stay on track, I'll be into those 14s in a couple of months.  It really isn't the end of the world.  Therefore, I'm going to suck up my disappointment and use it to motivate me! At least I'll have an entire wardrobe when I lose another 10 lbs or so :)

I just needed to share that with someone!

I've attempted to get dressed and then realized that the outfit is too tight, it's frustrating. you're not the only one who has spent extra minutes rummaging through the closet trying to find an outfit that fits perfectly. I like your positive outlook.

you can eat a ton and lose weight...i am commenting based on your comment to me! :-) i eat way too many veggies usually, and end up with a side affect of too much bloating and gas...but i guess it's worth it, because i can be full and satisfiend and still lose weight. and lately, i don't eat boring vegetables, they are cooked, sauteed, and seasoned. olive oil is good for you. i even had a parmesean crusted cauliflower on the weekend. (parmesean cheese and olive oil...) veggies are amazing! i eat a ton of them (well, when i'm not overindulging in unhealthy protein bars! LOL)

Was rainy today but the temperate was 58; I threw on a jacket & took a long walk in the rain.  Succeeded in controlling my calories and portions, again today.  Now that I am weighing and measuring food, I'm amazed how many portions I had been consuming this past couple years.  No wonder I gained weight.  

Breakfast ...slept late, wasn't hungry.

Snack...tangerine (35 cals)

Lunch: Lean hamburger (160 cals), Lite hamburger bun (80 cals), 1 slice low-fat Swiss cheese (30 cals), 1 Tbsp honey bbq sauce (25 cals), lettuce & tomato (3), 1 serving of garlic-flavored fries (160) = 458

Snack...Smart One frozen dessert = 150

Dinner...Hormel chicken Alfredo (330), 1 tsp grated Ramono cheese (25) = 355

Snack...4 low-fat fudge cookies (150)

Total calories for the day = 1148

Had a good food day and managed to get at least a little walking in. 

 

Breakfast: (Bob Evans) Turkey sausage link, egg beaters, wheat toast/Jelly, & fresh fruit = 400 calories

Lunch: Toasted 4 slices of low calorie bread (45 cals each) & spread pizza sauce (30 cals), turkey pepperoni (35 cals) & low-fat mozerella cheese (80 cals) on them.  Popped them in the toaster oven until cheese was melted (yum!) = 350 calories

Snacks: 2 tangerines (35 cals each), Weight Watchers Strawberry ice cream bar (60 cals) = 130

Dinner: 2 Oscar Meyer low-fat hotdogs (40 cals each), 2 lite hotdog buns (60 cals each), 1/4 cup canned chili w/o beans (55 cals), and chips (120 cals) = 375 calories

Snacks: 3 low cal cookies (140 cals)

total calorie count for today = 1290

 My goal is to be comfortably into a size 12 by mid-spring; I barely fit into a 14 now.  I've only been a size 12 once in my life; that lasted for about a year and then I began gaining weight.  I don't want to spend another summer covering up my stomach, hips, and thick thighs with jeans, clam diggers, and long dresses.  Since spring is three months away, I'm hoping I'll at least be close to my goal weight by then.

Had a really good food & exercise day yesterday.  Since the weather was beautiful (for a change), I decided not to go to the gym but to take the dogs on a very LONG walk, instead.  We walked for about an hour and a half; the dogs loved it and I enjoyed being out in the sunshine!  The maximum amount of calories I eat is around 1700; yesterday, I consumed a total of 1330. 

I went to a bowling alley with friends last night.  Usually, when I go there, I eat pizza or a burger.  Last night, someone in our group had a birthday so there was cake, brownies, and pizza all around.  I didn't touch any of it but went to the snack bar and bought a diet Coke & a bag of mini pretzels.  I didn't feel deprived because I had ate a nutricious dinner before leaving the house (so I wasn't hungry) and I nibbled on the pretzels while there.  

Today I'm meeting a friend for a late breakfast at Bob Evans.  I was nervous, at first, trying to figure out what I could order that wouldn't be high in calories.  Then I remembered, Bob Evans has a low-cal breakfast of fruit, Egg Beaters, & Yogurt.  :)

It's nice to be below 200 lbs again...I am motivated to keep those numbers moving lower and lower on the scales :)

It's been over a year since I've been on this site.  I have spent the past 21 months self-soothing with food and battling depression since my husband died.  The past couple of months, however, I've been more upbeat and am starting to become comfortable with my situation. 

I started going to the gym again and have been trying to eat healthier.  I threw all the unhealthy food out of my kitchen and bought fruits, veggies, lean-meats, and healthy snacks.  I think I'm ready to get back on track!

Yesterday:

Breakfast....wasn't hungry so didn't eat

* Lunch...Fish (102 cals), potatoes (50 cals), & peas (60 cals) = 212 calories

* Dinner...Pizza burger...lean hamburger (160 cals), 1 slice of low-fat swiss cheese (30 cals), 1 lite bun (80 cals), 1 Tbsp pizza sauce (20 cals), 1 serving of low-fat Pringles (70 cals) = 360

* Snacks...Strawberries w/Splenda (100 cals), 3 Newton Fruit Thin Cookies (140 cals), and Smart One frozen desert (150 cals) = 390

Today's total calorie intake = 962

I've allotted myself 1700 calories per day.  However, I did not consume that amount yesterday because I wasn't very hungry.  I try to eat low-calorie meals so I can snack throughout the day

I was able to stay motivated today and closely monitored everything I ate.  I had a late, but healthy, breakfast  (310 calories).  Later, while visiting with my son, I enjoyed a small bag of popcorn and a individual bag of M&Ms w/pretzels (310 calories). Tonight I went to the store and bought three pair of sweats, t-shirts, and exercise shoes.  I also needed to grocery shop but this time, instead of just grabbing any food and sticking it in the cart, I read labels.  

I came home, unloaded my bags, put everything away, changed clothes & headed to the gym before I invented an excuse to procrastinate.  I worked out on several machines and burned a total of 240 calories; I also worked out in the weight room (which I seriously enjoy doing)!

For dinner I had a piece of baked fish, potatoes, and peas w/corn mixed in (400 calories).

breakfast  (310 calories) + lunch (310 calories) + dinner (400 calories) = 1020 calories...When I subtract the 240 calories burned at the gym, my total count for the day was 780 calories.  My limit is 1800 per day therefore, I still have a generous amount of calories left, which affords me snacks (I LOVE to snack). 

One of the hardest adjustments I've had to make since my husband died is cooking for "one" and eating alone.  I've cooked for a family, or at least one other person, my entire adult life. It's been a struggle to cook one serving of anything. Tonight I found individual-size portions of veggies, fruits, entrees, flavored rice, cookies, chips, and other foods at the store. I selected the healthiest ones I could. Perhaps I should quit trying to cook homemade each day, like I did before, and just relax & enjoy the convenience of these pre-measured portions.  I suppose I could save homemade cooking for when company comes.  

It feels like all this is at least a step in the right direction.  Thanks for the nice comments some of you left.  I'll try to read some of your blogs when things slow down at work tomorrow.  Have a great night.
