Good morning!

I just came back from delivering daughter to the bus stop and am so surprised at the odd high temperatures outdoors: 63 degrees at 6.30 am in January.  I wore my usual heavy coat over my pajamas and started getting sweaty...Crazy weather!

I made chili with ground turkey, yesterday, but just could not eat it.  I'll try it again today.  Husband loved it, though.   I ended up eating chicken noodle soup with added veggies (okra) which reminded me of childhood :) I found okra at the store and thought that it would taste good, and I was right.  I think I like bland foods now, which is odd because I'd always liked spicy and hot before.

Exercise went well with one hour of nordic track bike at home (worked up a sweat,) while reading a book on Andrew Wyeth.  Fascinating artist.

Overall, the day went very well with exercising and eating moderately.

Cheers to all!

Food yesterday: oatmeal with raisins, 2 coffees, 1/2 tuna fish sandwich, apple,  almonds, chicken noodle soup with veggies. lots of water

Progress as of today: 10 lbs lost so far, only 37 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 01/27/2012:
I just checked and it's supposed to be almost 50 up here today, crazy! All your foods sound great yesterday. I have some ground turkey I need to make over the weekend, maybe I'll see if my boys will eat chili :) Have a good one!

V on 01/27/2012:
Nice weather today Selina :) Maybe the weekend will be just as warm! Have a wonderful weekend.

sweetpea1977 on 01/27/2012:
Nice weather! Sounds like its warmer up there than it is down here. Its currently 45, dreary and windy. But its supposed to be sunny with a high of 56 by this afternoon. The weekend is supposed to be sunny as well.

Enjoy your weekend!

liza36 on 01/27/2012:
Today is crazy weather for sure. Turkey chili sounds so good, it's a shame you couldn't enjoy it. But you had a great alternative. Have a great day.

We are strange creatures, my daughter can no longer eat pork after the birth of the angel, she says it just turns her off. Hasn't turned her of bacon though, which is apparently from a different aniamal altogether:) LOL Maybe your taste buds will adjust and return to 'normal' after a while:) Glad you had a good day selina:)

Good morning!

The oatmeal that I cooked yesterday turned out pretty good, although I changed the recipe a bit due to lack of cherries - I used raisins, instead.  Also, I did not use the sweetener - I thought that the sweetness of the raisins was just enough for my palate.  I'm glad I tried the steel cut oatmeal - I like the taste and the crunchy texture when compared with the flattened oatmeal.

For dinner, I cooked pork (pan fried with a few drops of olive oil, garlic), steamed green beans, cucumber salad and baked yams.  The yams tasted divine, even without the added butter, and reminded me of my mother-in-law who baked yams for us around Christmas time when we came to visit... great memories!   By the way, if you want to save energy when baking yams, microwave them until almost done (about 10 minutes for big yams) before putting them in the oven for 10 more minutes.  It takes over one hour to cook if you don't microwave them first.

I cleaned the house, yesterday.  Not fun, but it's nice to have the house nice and clean even though we are not expecting guests....

At the gym, I found the stretcher equipment (I saw someone using it and had an aha moment)  and I find it really nice!  I shall use it again next time after I'm finished with the weights and exercise.  If I use it right, it's perfect for my frozen shoulder issues.  I worked so hard, yesterday that I need to take aleve today.

So, yesterday was a very good day eating moderately and exercising - I feel I'm slowly coming back to life.

Thank you all for your support!

Progress as of today: 10 lbs lost so far, only 37 lbs to go!

Good job on everything. Now, what is the stretcher equipment? I have an inversion table I use to stretch my back and it really helps.

I have never thought of this before but of course, the same method would apply to roasting potatoes as well!! Duh! Sometimes someone just has to turn on the light. Thank you selina:) That stretcher equipment sounds great, love a good stretch:)

Good morning!

I went to bed so late last night and had to get up early to walk daughter to the bus stop.   It's so dark outside at 6.30am and there was a notice from the school saying that a stranger tried to coax a girl into his car 1/2 a mile from our house.  I don't know how much of that is true, but I'm not taking chances - I walk with her to the bus stop every morning.

I spent 1 and 1/2 hrs at the gym yestrday doing the bike and weight machines.  My arms feel sore this morning but I feel I can mov e the bad arm a little more - I think.  Tonight, I will spend some time in the gym again.

I made seaweed and cucumber salad yesterday - it tasted bitter, but still good.  I ended up eating pasta - not bitter at all.  Is my body telling me something I don't know? Anyway, I'll try oatmeal today - I saw the recipe that Biscotti reposted (thank you!) from La femme loca and I happen to have most of the ingredients in my pantry.   It's cooking at this very moment on the stove top.  I got rid of my slow cooker, so I hope the stove top will do.

Later....

Progress as of today: 10 lbs lost so far, only 37 lbs to go!

supercheese on 01/25/2012:
Does seaweed taste good? Hm...ive only had some in sushi but i don't think it tasted too bad....Oatmeal is my #1 choice for breakfast so I hope you like it!

Great job at the gym! I love seaweed in sushi but I have not had any luck with it at home. I've always wanted to make my own veggie rolls and I have the roller, I just need to work up the courage to do it. Have a good one!

When I had my ovaries removed in 2007 I went into forced menopause, and yes..it does do weird things to the body. I CAN TOTALLY SYMPATHIZE!!! And don't worry..you'll say lots of things you can't believe you are saying to people LOL (((hug))) take care of yourself!

Hi Selina, sorry you are having issues not only with your greens but also protecting your daughter. I think I am going through menopause, no symptoms apart from I am unusually tired and of course no TOM for getting on for four months. I will get my hormones checked next time I am at the doctor's.:)

Hello all!

When I was a child, up to age 13, I disliked the taste of most vegetables.  I was a very slim child because my mom never allowed sweets and unhealthy foods in the house - she is the most health conscious mom that I know.   Once I hit puberty,  I started eating all kinds of vegetables and fruits - they tasted great and I never understood why I had disliked them so much.  More recently, I started to notice that I don't like eating the same foods that I disliked consuming as a child (green leafs, brocoli, everything green really) as they have a bitter taste and unpleasant flavor.  The aftertaste is even worse - the only reason I eat them, really, is because I know they are supposed to be good for me. And because I cook them for my family, I might as well have some.  So there, I hit menopause big time.  Be aware that menopause does weird things to your body.  Things like changing one's taste buds and shrinking one's ovaries.  And I kid you not - I was just told by the doctor that my ovaries are shrunk and that's to be expected of a person my age undergoing menopause.   I was so depressed having shrunken ovaries and did not even have the heart to tell my husband - how does one tell these things to one's husband? "Hi honey, the doctor told me that now that I'm old, I have shrunken ovaries!" ?   And I can't believe I'm telling you all!  Why the doctor told me that is beyond me - I can't see my ovaries, nobody can seee them.  Why does she bother telling me that?  Maybe she was just talking out loud when she was doing the ultrasound...  Anyway, I had never heard of that before, so it shocked me out of my socks!

I am going to the gym this evening when I drop off my daughter at dance.  I have been good at exercising.  My issue is with foods.  I think I'm going to start writing down my foods again - after I finish eating the biscotti that I bought yesterday at Whole Foods. The biscotti does not seem to taste bitter and does not seem to leave an awlful aftertaste in my mouth...

At least, now I know why I was such a picky eater when I was a kid.  TASTE BUDS CHANGE.

Cheers!

Progress as of today: 10 lbs lost so far, only 37 lbs to go!

supercheese on 01/24/2012:
oh yes taste buds change. I have noticed that when I was a kid I hated eating yogurt, spinach, tuna, and carrots. Now, I eat these foods plus foods I didn't like almost every single day. I find it kinda cool!

V on 01/24/2012:
Have fun at the gym today Selina <3

Umpqua on 01/24/2012:
So true about the taste buds, I feel like mine are constantly changing. And that gives me hope that my 3-year-old will continue adding new veggies to his list of approved foods haha. Your doctor could have been a little more tactful ;P Have a good one and hugs to you!

legcramps on 01/24/2012:
Have a good day!

grannyannie on 01/24/2012:
I didn't like many veggies until I was an adult. Agree, writing down everything you eat is a good idea. It keeps me on track. I never noticed that my taste buds changed with menopause, but then that was nearly 20 years ago! (I was only 40!)

hollybelle on 01/24/2012:
Oh, honey shrunken ovaries are the least of my troubles since menopause - it's not fun, but one does adjust. Did you doc say anything about being ready for hormones? I need to get some, I can tell you that! Maybe I'll make an appointment soon.

biscottibody59 on 01/24/2012:
Glad you made this entry--hang in there! Mustard greens (fresh) are my fave of the moment. They have to be well-cooked or they're a little bitter. It all goes away though with the cooking and then I add a splash or three of vinegar. Goooood eating!

To me menopause is a supreme BIT*H! I'll take 10 puberty phases--haha--to my one menopause phase:-) If I could have killed menopause I would have, and then none of us would have to go through it. But that's just me!

ps I haven't had a change in tastebuds, but I had some other food sensitivities that cropped up (had none before, ever). These have changed from time to time recently as well. I'm sure that menopause has contributed to the list of health issues I've had over the last 3 or so years. I had no complaints for years before that. Lucky or menopause--I don't really know how much of which it involves to be honest.

sweetpea1977 on 01/24/2012:
I agree, taste buds change! I cant wait for my boys' taste buds to catch up with mine. They have such a bland diet right now!

Enjoy your gym time!!

Maria7 on 01/24/2012:
Yep...definitely..as we age, our taste changes. When I was growing up, I disliked okra but after I got grown, I ate some that had been coated in flour and fried and LOVED it. :-D

Hello Everyone!

It's been dificult for me to get back to my normal routine of sleeping, eating and exercising - Husband is still home since the beginning of December (or was it mid-december?) after his surgery.  He now basically works from home, on the phone and online...   I guess I'm waiting for him to get back to work so that I can get on with my life....  The reason I can't get going with my life with him around the house is beyond me.  Is it because the TV is always on? (I hate those TV shows about the Alaskan Gold rush,  vintage car auctions, WWII back/white air battle footages) Or, is it the fact that I have to fix him breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus snacks, when normally when I'm home alone I barely spend time preparing food for me during the day?   Meanwhile, I've been putting on some weight - a few pounds.  The truth is, I have been exercising (twice/three times a week) but I don't have my heart in it.  However, if I miss my gym and physiotheraphy, my left arm starts freezing on me again and I have horrible pains.    Exercising my arm is painful, too, but I have to do it if I don't want to end up with a worthless arm.  So, basically, I feel bummed out and depressed.  Good news is that my mammogram came back negative to all things bad (yay)

On the work front, I suppose I can't complain too much, as I have been painting like there's no tomorrow.

I hope everyone is doing well.  Cheers!

Good morning and Happy New Year to all!  Thank you Maria and Biscotti for stoping by and for the good wishes for the New Year!

I've been doing rather well, despite Hubby's medical issues due to his skiing accidented leg - so much drama, ugh.   Finally he had a third surgery to have it fixed - this time he had a full hip replacement surgery in the beginning of December and is already walking rather well with the help of a crutch.   He was into his third week of recovery when Christmas came, and you know how busy one gets around Christmas time!  Anyway, it was WONDERFUL to have guests (relatives) for 2 nights over Christmas.   It was a nice change after some rather depressing times alone with hubby who was especially moody and in pain.  Anyway, all is well.  Right now he is walking rather normally, but still has a physical therapist who come to our house 3 times a week.  I think this is going to be the last week, though.

Daughter is doing great - she got straight As last quarter, as usual, and is loving her first year of high school.  She dances 3 times a week and is a happy child, always smilling.  I'm a lucky mommy, and I know it!

As for myself, my weight has been more or less unchanged.  Probably a little lower than what I have posted, we'll see.  I'm not ready yet to come back to posting on a regular basis but I'll get there.  However, I do realize that I need to get serious and more enthusiastic about weight loss...

I went to the doctor and he told me I needed surgery (bursitis) but when I went for a second opinion, I was told I have frozen shoulder, aka 50-year-old-shoulder,  and all I need is physiotheraphy.   Which is better than surgery, of course, but what a shock to learn that my shoulder is older than myself! LOL!  So, I have been going to theraphy for this dumb shoulder that decided to freeze on me. :(  I have been painting on a regular basis, though, which is good for my mental health.  This month,  one of my watercolors was chosen for our art league's juried exhibition, yay for me!

This year is going to be a busy one - this summer we are moving again, this time to the Am embassy in Tokyo.   This is great for hubby who is going to retire after our post there.   Great expectations!  It's sad to leave the area and my friends, though, for I have grown to love it here...

I hope you are all well, looking forward to a GREAT New Year!   Stay well and stay in touch! Selina

Progress as of today: 10 lbs lost so far, only 37 lbs to go!

Woman, you've been at it--or it's been at you is more like it;-) I kinda think it's prudent any more to get a second opinion. Too many medical horror stories--yikes!

Hi Selina, I was thinking about you on and off over the past couple of days:) I am glad that your husband sounds as if finally he is moving forward and has a solution to a bad year with his leg, daughter sounds as if she is enjoying life (always a joy!) Exciting news about the move but I would miss that lovely home and green spacious area you have to walk in. You will miss that I am sure. So lovely to hear from you:)

Maria7 on 01/07/2012:
Wow...lots going on with you...glad your Hubby is doing better and sorry to read that he had been going through so much...happy to read about your Daughter doing so well...sorry to hear about your shoulder...is it the one on the side of the hand you paint or do not paint with or do you hold your paints in one hand and paint with the other? (Curious.) I took my Mom some markers and a picture already drawn she can color when she feels like it, today. She has really been going through a very hard, painful time. Be glad when you are back on here often. Looking forward to Tokyo photos! :-D

Hello all!  I hope you are all doing well!

I took my brother-in-law and his wife to the airport early this afternoon, which means that from now on, I'll have more time to do my own thing, my paintings, my exercising, my dieting.  However, I did enjoy their company and I already miss them...

This morning, I went to the gym  and did 10 min eliptical and 1 hr  yoga.   I'm also done  with the dentist (a new crown) and should be ok in that department for the next year, I hope.

Last night, when I was already in bed, my husband saw a racoon in our back yard.  He said that he looked cute, came up to the window/door and looked in the house.  He said the racoon looked like a bandit, wearing a mask.  I hope he comes back again tonight, I'm considering staying up late and leaving some cat food outside - I want to see his face :)

Good morning!

I've been doing very well this week: went to yoga once and cardio/weights workout twice.  Slowly but surely.

I've been reading this series of books by Stieg Larsson, a Sweedish author.  I think he's brilliant!

My brother in law and his wife are coming to visit this weekend, from Oregon.  We are excited about it in anticipation.

Have a good day, everyone!

Good morning!

I had the best weekend ever!  It started earlier on Friday when my brother-in-law, who was in town for work, came over for dinner and stayed for the weekend.  On Saturday, the rest of the clan came to join us (sister-in-law, nephew, nephew's wife and their baby daughter) and in the evening I had even more guests for dinner (my friends who were here last week.)  Our townhome was full of noise and laughter and we all had a terrific time!  We cooked and ate together and I had a lot of help from everyone:  everyone loves cooking (except for my hubby, who only knows how to boil water) and I just went along with everyone. Fortunately, although  I didn't take photos (I always forget) my daughter was having fun with her cousin's fancy camera and took the following.  I was wishing she had taken more of the yummy food.....

Don't you just love sleeping in with the windows wide open, listening to the sound of the rain!  The weather is perfect around my part of the country: rain and temps in the 60's.  Getting up before 5 am, for two days in a row has been hard, especially when the weather is this nice...   The good thing is that I can always go back to bed after seeing my daughter off to school.  By the way, she loves high school and is so enthusiastic about it!  I wasn't worried about it, however, it's always a bonus to find her so positive and upbeat about her  new school...

So, I did go back to the gym yesterday after dropping daughter off at her 1 and 1/2 hr ballet class. I did 40 min of elliptical, 20 minutes of weight machines and 30 minutes of treadmill.  Yay for me!  It's nice to be back to the gym and feel the sweat coming down one's back....  it felt really nice and healthy.   Also, my friend (the one in yesterday's entry) re-started physical therapy yesterday, in this country.  They are still living in a hotel while they get their house ready to move in - so much needs to be adapted for her and that will take months!  Eventually, they will live only 10 minutes away from my house.

Eating went perfectly well all day but it went badly at dinner time, when we returned from gym.  I was famished and tired...

Plans for today include healthy eating and more gym.   I'm getting my mind trained for yoga tomorrow...

Progress as of today: 10 lbs lost so far, only 37 lbs to go!

Ohhh, I hear you on that, I love the sound of the rain, too. I even like to work when it's raining outside! I hated rain because of my cancelled tennis trainings though. This year it will be different, the pool is covered. LOL...

That's great that your daughter is enjoying her new school. We're having similar weather here and it's a welcome change from the heat and humidity. Great job with the exercise!

Indeed yay for you, good going selina. Getting back in a routine will really help (she says who has no routine at all at the moment!). I am glad your daughter has fitted into her new school. It is always a worry! Strange how plans fly out the window when we are really hungry and must eat NOW!!! I hope you have a good day and I am like you just love lying in bed listening to the rain!!:)

I'm back at the gym myself & it does feel good- for me I can't do it every day- maybe 3-4 days a week to keep me liking it. Glad to hear that your daughter likes her new school .

Good on the gym...however, that's the thing about exercise...it usually does increase appetite...but it is still worth it. :-)

Yes, rain--we've had a little over an inch all summer--not good! Glad you're enjoying the cool weather so!

Good to see you're back at the gym--good job! I'm all for changing shoes every 3-6 months depending on how much you've worn them. It's the mid-sole that goes before you can even see much wear on the outer sole (unless you're running many miles per week). It's a shame they don't last for the price, but it's the one thing I've learned that (for me) it doesn't pay me physically to go "cheap" on!

Have a good weekend!
