Hello everyone! It's time to get back here, starting posting and get busy paying attention to my health. I'm settled and happy to be back in Japan, although it's temporary. I'm guessing my husband will retire after this post... Anyway, during something stressful like a move, I always gain weight and this time it was not any different. The good thing was that I lost most of the weight gained and then some, however the bad thing was that I put some back again. Right now I'm about 170lbs which is a shock for me because I've been going to the gym on a regular basis... I have to go back watching my food intake, I'm slacking there...

Tomorrow I'm going to turn 50!!!!!! I just can't believe it!

Life is good, daughter is happy at her new school and husband seems to be enjoying his job, too. As for myself I'm doing fantastic! I hope everyone is doing great too!

Progress as of today: 12 lbs lost so far, only 20 lbs to go!

I'm down another .5 lb, yay!

My week has been pretty busy, lots of social events.  Today I have a luncheon at our ladies club and dinner with hubby's work related people.  It's been like this for a while, but I've been able to stay on my "diet" by only eating when hungry and keeping up with gym work.  BTW, I'm back to the gym, several days in a row.  Nowadays, I go in the evenings because that's what seems viable.  I like morning workouts but recently I'be been so busy in the mornings, so I go in the evenings or at night...   I have also been working: teaching and painting on a regular basis.  Next week, I'm going to set up a booth at the embassy to sell my paintings and notecards. Life is good.

Last week my facebook friend who I have known for the past 3 years died of leukemia.  So sad.  She found me through my blog and we started up a correspondence friendship for we lad a lot in common.  She grew up in Switzerland, to American parents, just around the corner from where I lived (in Switzerland), frequented the same restaurant around the corner, went to the same international school that my daughter was attending, etc.  We enjoyed each other's accounts on life in general.  Last year, she fell ill and found out she had cancer of the blood, so sad.  It was a tough year for her and her family, she suffered a lot of blood transfusions (more than 100,) bone marrow transplant, had to have fundraisers although she and her husband HAD insurance (enough said!) She was so beautiful (inside and out) but succumbed to the cancer last weekend.  She was so young, a lot to live for, and I feel so sad for her children and parents.  

I hope everyone is doing well, LIVE LIFE!

So sorry to hear about your friend. Congrats on getting to sell your paintings. I like to paint but I never can sell anything because I just see my mistakes and feel guilty selling. I am sure yours are much better though. Take care and give yourself a hug.

RYC: as for the weight, it's just about eating a lot lately:-) I'm sure with that there's a little water, but really I think it's just calories.

I'm two pounds lighter this morning!  I was in doubt, so I weighed myself twice and shook hard the scale between the two weigh-ins, just to make sure.   I'm not quite sure why I've been loosing weight but I assume it's the walking (we walk a lot in this place, just to go from one place to another) and eating only when hungry.  Also, I'm surrounded with skinny people: men and women are so fit here!  Very rarely one sees an overweight person on the street.  So anyway, I hope this weight loss will continue until I reach my goal weight. Which I changed to 150lbs.  Stay well everyone!

It sounds like you have found your healthy lifestyle!! My biggest detriment to my weight loss is my sedentary work environment. I sit in front of a computer 10 hours a day. When I started this journey one of the little things I did was getting up and walking for things. And purposely only getting one thing at a time so I had a reason to get up and walk again. I know it sounds stupid but just adding and then doubling my steps aided in my mental approach to weight loss. And walking to get from one place to another is such a natural activity that we have all bypassed with technology. My daughter facetimed or skyped or whatever it is they do with a friend in Australia yesterday. Becky talked to my daughter (who could see her) as she walked to work. The scenery was beautiful and it was about a 15 minute walk. She move from Louisiana to Australia to be with a boyfriend she met, so she is over there with no car. But she is loving the experience! YOu hit the key of only eating when you are hungry. So many times we eat out of boredom or to make ourselves feel better. I'm so happy for you!! Have a great day!

I weighed myself this morning and I'm a little lighter than yesterday, yay!

Plans for today: visiting an art show in yokohama (a 40 min subway ride) to see the exhibit of an artist with whom I've been corresponding on facebook for a couple of years.  After that, I'm going to see another show (another 30 min subway ride) of another artist i've been in touch for that long.  I know both of them on facebook since the time i lived in geneva, so it's actually pretty exciting to meet them personally and see their exhibit and their awesome work in person.

Happy October! 

I found my scale hidden in a duffle bag along with daughter's skiing gear and her emotiocon shower curtain - go figure.  I think it's the last thing I unpacked, lol!  So I weighed myself and I'm 168lbs.  Yay!  I had gained so much before the move but lost it all after we arrived here.  The struggle fun of weight loss continues....

I didn't go to the gym at all last week but I compensated with working in the house, putting things away, hanging paintings on the walls, etc  Pretty heavy stuff.

The movers came and went: the house is pretty messy with stuff everywhere to be put away, but that's the way it is.   At least, this time around I only chose the things that I like most, so the "stuff" is pretty nice.  The moving crew was excellent!!!! They even helped me hang the clothes in the closets, they unpacked everything (while I quickly put the stuff away to make more room on the beds, tabletops, countertops) they took all the boxes and packing material away except for a few boxes that I wanted to do myself (things from bedroom drawers, lol).  The house is large and there's a LOT of storage space, so I'm all set.  Just give me a couple of days and I'll be in business again!

Because I was so exhausted with the movers, I didn't go to the gym and will not go today, either.  I already have lots of energy consuming activities while I put stuff away, anyway.  I haven't seen my scale, yet.  I wonder if I put it in storage??????  That would be a bummer....

Glad to read that your movers did a nice job! It's stressful enough to be moving so makes things a bit better when it goes well. You seem to be doing well with your transition. Oh, I just saw a great movie, Jiro Dreams of Sushi. I thought of not because your living in Japan but the quote that you posted about doing a job with all of your heart. it's a great movie if you haven't seen it.

I can't believe I haven't posted here since Wed, time just slipped away! I hope everyone is doing well!

I had a pretty busy week, I suppose.  I've been working a couple of hours a day (teaching), I have been painting every chance I get and I have been going to the gym faithfully.  I even exercised over the weekend, Sat and Sun.  Not too many people using the facilities, but I can always find a good TV station that will keep me entertained for 40 min on the eliptical and 20 minutes doing weights.  I've also been doing the exercises that I learned from my physiotherapist in VA because my shoulder is not yet 100% well.  I'd say, it's about 70% on a good day.  I still can't take off tight clothes over my shoulders, but I do have help for that around the house (either my daughter or husband.)  I'll get there!

We had a couple of parties to attend last week.  We also hosted one for about 50 people (work related party, mostly the people in hubby's office did all the job), the good thing was that it was all catered, I didn't have to do anything except socialize.  So, I ate leftover catered food all weekend because there was a lot of it!  Good thing was that I didn't have to cook.  Bad thing was that it was high in calories, not the sort of thing I'd cook....

My sea freight is going to be delivered this morning.  It arrived last Tue but it took a week to clear customs.  The moving crew is probably going to take the whole day helpind me out with the unpacking.  I'll let you know how this company crew compares with the crew in the US when we moved back from Geneva 2 years ago.  I remember how unhelpful they were, I had to call the company after they left...  they were sent right back on the same evening and the whole crew worked for another couple of hours.... very awkward moment.    I'm almost certain that this crew is going to win in the comparison.  Hopefully.

Good job on the working out! Isn't it fun to host and not always be the chef too? I love to cater for parties when I'm not expected to socialize and I love to socialize when I don't have to serve! Glad your stuff is finally arriving. It amazes me how long that process takes. RYC I only wear the same size in cycling pants because they are mostly spandex and I like the tight compression on my legs. In real slacks I am probably still 3 sizes away...I carry a lot of my weight in my hips and thighs. In fact daughter took a pic that I might post later. Have a great day or night whatever time it may be for you!

The above is my new motto in life in general, not only for my health/dieting purposes.  It's a very special quote written on a small rock by my sister-in-law and given to my nephew, several years ago as a memento.  He picks up the rock, feels it and reads it every morning, before going to work.  It's a way of being close to his mom who passed away a few years ago.   It so happens that he has become very sucessful in his business/career - I'm a very proud aunt.

 

I'm done with today's exercise: 35 min eliptical and 25 min weights and streching.  Done!  It's rainy around here: I'm going to paint indoors all day.  Cheers to all!

Yesterday was a holiday here, so hubby stayed home all day.  I went to the gym and worked out early in the morning for 1 hr at the eliptical and 30 min weights.  Actually, I was ready to quit the eliptical after 30 min but had to stay on because richard gere was on "the view" and i had to keep watching, haha.  So thanks to richard gere, i worked out 600 calories on the eliptical.  I went to an art exhibit by a facebook friend at a very posh place in the ginza district of tokyo.  I didn't meet the artist but I spoke with her on the phone when i got there.  She is coming to visit me one of these days.  Yay!

Today I went to the gym for one hour at 7am.  I really like going exercising early in the mornings!  I started painting late morning and kept at it all day, so  I'm almost done -  it's night time already.  It's my first oil painting after the move (I bought blank canvas last Sunday at a very nice art supply store not to far from my house, just a few subway stations away).  Last Sunday, I also went to a flea market and bought a couple of antique japanese obi (silk brocade kimono sash) which I'll use to make sofa pillows. 

I just found out that my sea shipment is due to arrive today.  They need about a week to clear customs, so it means that I'll have my stuff sooner than later.  I'm excited about seeing my shoes again - I forgot to pack enough shoes, so I keep wearing the same thing over and over again.   

I have 3 jeans that I can wear now - they were a little too tight and uncomfortable before, but now they are very comfy and I need to wear a belt.   I hope I'll get to buy smaller jeans soon.

The party last night was fabulous!  Even my daughter enjoyed it (she saw her friends there too!)  The food was not the best (finger foods) but the company was great.  I got to meet many, many new people!   On the way home from the party, hubby and I decided to stop for a beer and yakitori at an old establishment where he used to go 10 to 15 years ago.   The food was good and the beer was excellent.  I guess I didn't need the extra food, but the ambiance of the place and the experience was very nostalgic.  I didn't go the gym but I did a lot of walking yesterday.  I'll go to the gym this afternoon.

BTW, my tummy felt much better after the zantac.  Thank you all for the good wishes.
