I saw my doctor this morning and he had the results of my blood tests that I had done a couple of week ago.  It's just horrible - my colesterol is really high and sugar level is not doing too well either.  He suggested that I should start taking medicine to lower my colesterol and go on a diet to lose weight.  So, what have I been doing all this time if not watching my weight?  By the way, my weight at the doctor's says that I'm heavier than I though I was... all in all, it was a not-so-good-morning for me.

I did go to yoga yesterday but skipped cardio and weights.  My body felt a bit too tired...

My cat Inky is sick and has been throwing up.  She hasn't eaten in a couple of days, so she has nothing but bile to throw up.  I'm so worried about her, poor thing.  I'll take her to the vet if she doesn't improve soon.

Sorry for the not-so-positive entry.  I'll go to the gym now for my cardio exercises... whatever.

UPDATE: Inky is feeling better as she drank some water and took three licks off the top of her wet food.  I'm SO GLAD....

Progress as of today - 12 lbs lost so far, only 35 lbs to go!

waydesmommy on 02/10/2011:
I think you should take your cat to the vet now. Not eating and throwing up is serious. Don't wait do it now. It always seems as tho the scales at the dr. office want you to weigh more lol. Plus they usually don't let you take off your shoes and they add at least 2 lbs by themself. And prolly another 1 or 2 lbs for your clothes.

V on 02/10/2011:
Oh No Selina! :( You were doing so well with the healthy eating so I hope you can get over this little hump in the road...I am hoping that your dr's scale is wrong! This entry is how you are feeling so no apologies for that! That is why we post right? Love you

KathyBlue on 02/10/2011:
See, I have the same problem. Healthy eating, and even then my Cholesterol is higher than ever... It's weird. I start to believe in the articles saying that cholesterol is not a bad thing, how can it be if I'm doing everything right? My blood sugar is OK though... FOR NOW... I wouldn't take a pill if I were you. We cannot give in so easily... Depending on pills sucks!!! Sorry about Inky... I hope she gets better, be sure the vet sees her before it's too late. Beijinhos!

KathyBlue on 02/10/2011:
Yup, I had my exams done last Monday and it revealed high cholesterol levels. Back in May I had NORMAL cholesterol values, so... I don't know! My mother-in-law gave me feijoada the day before (Sunday), but it only had supposedly low-fat meat and beans, with the usual "caldeirada" ... so it might have been because of that. I refuse to take pills. When I was morbid obese (how cool to say I WAS) the doctor gave me pills to take for my heart. I asked him: is it necessary, at twenty-something, to take pills everyday? And he, of course, said yes, but that I've been doing that to myself, by having that much weight. True! Lesson learned! Now, about cholesterol, I am unable to understand the reason!!!

About blood sugar: just give a bit more attention of the fruits you eat. You eat lots of fruit, varieties which is very good but you may want to reconsider some because of their sugar levels. You can read about it on NITA's recent entries, in the comments people left some useful info on fruits vs. diabetes/blood sugar triggers.

Maria7 on 02/10/2011:
I sent you a comment today to your yesterday's entry below. Hope everything gets much better for you and hope the cat, Inky is soom much better, too.

moogy on 02/10/2011:
Boo! for the blood tests.!! Good grief, does the doctor know that you have been working hard for months and I mean it not as if you are huge is it? On a lighter note, I was so glad to read about your sister, you must be so excited to see her and vice versa. I was getting excited for you just reading about you not seeing her for a year. I hope you have a wonderful visit, I wonder if she realizes how much your daughter looks like her??

Good morning everyone!

Today is going to be another awesome day!  I'm so excited for I just got the news that my sister and her family are coming to visit us in the beginning of March, for a whole week, yay!  She already made hotel reservations for their stay in a hotel near our house and is booking a huge car for all of us to travel together.  Normally, I have guests stay with us - my sister usually stays in our small guest room when they don't bring the kids - but our town home is so small and their family is large - she has 3 boys in their teens!   I can't wait to see them again!

Exercising and eating went very well, yesterday.   I'm planning to go to yoga this morning.  Have a great day, everyone!

Progress as of today - 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

sweetpea1977 on 02/09/2011:
How exciting!! Good idea on them getting a hotel. That would be a lot of people in a townhouse. :)

Glad you had a healthy day yesterday! Enjoy your yoga session!

What lovely news!! Even better they are not staying in your house, I find that even guests you love lose there loveliness after three days.LOL I bet she will be looking forward to seeing you, has she seen you since you returned? If not, it will be wonderful, well, it will be wonderful anyway!! Have a good day Selina.:)

Good morning all!

Yesterday, I had a great day eating healthily/consciously and low cal, and I was able to take two trips to the gym - in the a.m. for yoga class and in the evening for cardio, after I dropped off daughter at the tap dancing school.  I won't be able to go to yoga today - art gallery appointment is at the same time as yoga class - but I will go to the gym after dropping off daughter at ballet class.  So, there's my plan and I'm sticking to it.

Have a great day everyone!

Great job on the exercise! I'm such a dork, everything is in MY car and I'm at a complete loss without it. I think this makes a strong case for picking up a 2nd yoga mat ;) Have a good one!

Umpqua on 02/08/2011:
Wow, that's crazy - yoga drama! I don't have any blocks or straps for this class, and I keep my blanket and other stuff near me while practicing. My current mat is cheap and thin, I bought it for pilates originally. Loveray made some great suggestions for extra thick mats, and I'm planning to invest in one as soon as I get my first paycheck from freelance work (hopefully any day now!) I'm looking at spending about 100, but it will be worth it to have the extra padding.

nita51 on 02/08/2011:
Your day seems well planned. So happy everything seems to be under control. Thanks for the your nice comment. Kudos to you for your great exercise routines. Awesome job. :) :)

Good morning!

I hope you all had a great weekend and are ready for a fresh new week!  I had a pretty busy one, running around doing errands and never had a chance to come online.  I took hubby to the airport yesterday afternoon as he has another 2 weeks in Europe - I felt so bad for him to have to travel so soon after his surgery...  I still think that he needs his crutches, but he decided not to take them and will get new ones in Geneva, from his original doctor who operated on him when he first got hurt, if he really needs those crutches.  We miss him already, but I know time will fly as it always does when he is gone... or when he is around, for that matter.

My week promises to be busy with my artwork, as well.   I shall be working on a carnival themed painting which I plan to submit for a show next month.

I plan to go back to my yoga class today as I feel so much better.  In fact, Friday night I felt energized enough to go to the gym while my daughter was at her dance class.  It felt great to be back after a couple of days of feeling miserable due to the anesthesia I had to take on Wed.  All is well now, except that my stomach does not feel too much better with the meds the doctor prescribed me.  I had the worst tummy ache on Saturday evening and Sunday, most of the day.   I shall be calling the doctor this morning for a better medicine.

As the quarter ended, my daughter was chosen for the "student of the quarter award" at her middle school and I've been invited to the award ceremony!  She is a wonderful girl and  I'm a lucky mom to have her around!

I hope you'll have a great day!

Progress as of today - 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

KathyBlue on 02/07/2011:
lol, I like your phrase about time flying :) it's so true... I go to Hungary in May and I'll be missing my man but time will fly, here, there, everywhere, we get busy and then we get back together again... the most important for me, day by day, is to NEVER leave the house without giving a kiss to him, a hug or something. And I NEVER leave him in anger as well, at least I try. My grandmother taught me this - I guess it's WWII mentality: you can never take anything/anyone for granted...

Umpqua on 02/07/2011:
I hope your hubby does OK with traveling. Yay for yoga and exercise!!

sweetpea1977 on 02/07/2011:
Wow, hubby is traveling so soon after surgery. At least he will have access to his old doctor if any emergencies arise!

Im so happy to hear about your painting again! You are so talented, so you need to get it all on paper/canvas! :)

Enjoy the yoga and gym!!

Sorry I may have contributed to your brownie craving with my story. They were so good too! Such a shame I didn't end up sharing them, and eating some myself. I really contemplated going the Geevee route by freezing them and parceling them out, but I'm not strong enough for that. I seriously could have eaten half of them right on the spot. The better place for them is in the trash rather than on my hips!

Definitely, it is worth having children just so that you get the grandchildren. They are so much more lovable and a lot less trouble. Plus they think I am wonderful, the big boys think I am the coolest nana because I watch WWE with them, and the girls just love me. Being a grandmother is one of life's great joys. Something for you to look forward to.:)

Hello, fellow DDers!

It seems like coming back to DD has been easier said than done, I do have a good feeling I'll be getting back to my usual self, though.

On Wednesday I had to be anesthetized for a procedure (endoscopy) to check what was causing my heartburns and stomach pains. It turns out I have is a little ulcer in my stomach and gastritis in my esophagus which is great news because the doctor was concerned about cancer(!) Give me a break! All I need to do is take some prescription meds for a couple of months to take care of these problems.  The procedure only lasted 10 minutes but the after effects of anesthesia made me feel sick for a couple of days and I still feel a little dizzy, after two whole days of sleeping.  I can’t wait to get well so I can go back to my normal life of going to the gym and yoga again.

I have a friend who has evacuated Egypt (the friend who I visited two Christmases ago in Cairo)  I hope I can get together with her this weekend, once she is back in town... I can't believe what's happening in Cairo!

Progress as of today - 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

sweetpea1977 on 02/04/2011:
What a relief that its only an ulcer and gastritis. I hope the meds help ease up those pains!!

Have a wonderful weekend selina!!

tangalyn on 02/04/2011:
hope u start feeling better

panda22 on 02/04/2011:
Wow glad your test came back with good results that can be taken care of and not what they were fearing! I hope you feel better soon! The stuff in Egypt is really scary, I have a friend who goes to a University over there and she had to leave because of it too. Glad your friend is getting out too away from the violence! Oh as for the Flaxseed here is a great article with tips on how to use it and store it. http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/flaxinfo_2.htm ....I mix 2TBSP of ground flaxseed in my oatmeal every morning. You can also add it to smoothies, yogurt, and cereal. It's better to eat it ground instead of the whole seeds because the whole seeds go right through your system and don't give your body a chance to absorb the nutrients. ...and like the article says, drink LOTS of water if you start eating flax cuz it definitely aides in digestion! Have a great day =)

geevee on 02/04/2011:
We sprinkle flax seed meal on salads and cereal. You can add it to meatloaf. I buy it at Whole Foods for something like $4 for a 16oz bag of Bob's. It is excellent for lowering cholesterol too. It has sort of a nutty taste.

biscottibody59 on 02/04/2011:
Good to see you got something out of the Overcoming Overeating book:-)

Take good care of yourself--did they check to see if your ulcer was from h.pylori? Just curious. When I was having really odd gastro symptoms last spring my dr was kind enough to humor me by testing me at my request--though it was a shot in the dark. It was negative.

Hope you have a good weekend and your friend is safe and sound--I hope things settle down there in Egypt quickly!

moogy on 02/04/2011:
Makes you appreciate living in a safe country doesn't it? I am sorry about your yuckky procedure and your reaction to it. Good grief girl (sorry about the illeternation), life has been throwing it at you lately. Hopefully life will settle down soon. The earth will tilt and you will get a gentle spring and a lovely summer, it bound to work out that way, especially after your awful winter. Hugs

Maria7 on 02/04/2011:
Hope that you get to feeling much better very soon. Hope you have a good visit with your friend. Glad your Hubby is doing better, too. :-)

Good morning!

I just said so long to my dear hubby who is well enough to go to the office even though he still needs his crutches.  IMO, he should stay home longer, but c'est la vie...  Today, the Fed Govmt has allowed people to work out of their homes due to the expected winter/ice/snow storm but hubby decided to go, anyway.  I may have to go pick him up at the subway station later.

I've been using the Overcoming Overeating book guidelines, going to the gym religiously for the cardio and weights and taking my yoga classes, but guess what, I've gained weight!  How crazy is that?  I have yet to figure out what's going on.

So, because I am a regular at the yoga class, which I love,  I bought the whole yoga parafhernalia - now I am committed and will keep it up!

Have a good day, ladies (and gents)!

Progress as of today - 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

V on 02/01/2011:
Hey Selina! We sure did miss you around here and not to worry about the teeny gain, it will be off in no time! Have a wonderful day!

sweetpea1977 on 02/01/2011:
I wouldnt worry about the weight gain just yet. You may just be retaining water in all the muscles you've been building. Increase you water intake and re-evaluate the number of calories you're taking in. Perhaps you arent taking in enough to keep you properly fueled. Do a google search for BMR to find out how many calories you burn just by existing. Then, from there, you can figure out how many calories you need to lose weight!

Anyway, keep up the gym and yoga workouts. Thats awesome!!

Umpqua on 02/01/2011:
The weight gain could be muscle, I agree with Sweetpea not to worry about it just yet. What kind of yoga goodies did you get? I need to get a 2nd mat so I can double up. The space where my class is has a hard floor and I need more cushioning. My instructor also has these cool yoga grippy socks because it's so cold these days. She got them at Target so I'm going to look for them next time I go.

moogy on 02/01/2011:
How frustrating is that?? I am sure that something must give sooner of later and as long as it isn't you, all will be well. Your husband probably has cabin fever and just want to get out on his own, probably has been grateful for all the nursing but needs "some space", you know what they are like!!! Plus, you could probably you a little 'me' time as well!! I hope you enjoy your day of not fetching and carrying:)

Good morning!  I apologize for being MIA for so long - my big excuse is that hubby is still home and I have been his main caretaker, although he has been doing rehab at the local rehab center.  I've been driving him to wherever he needs to go... Today, I'm driving him to town (Washington DC) because of a meeting he must attend at work.  Next week, he should be back to the office and I shall have lots of flexible time.  Having said that, I have found time to paint though, so I've been doing lots of that, too.  I just don't spent too much time at the computer like I do when hubby is not home...

In the past weeks, I've made lots of changes in my lifestyle: I've joined the local gym and I love the yoga classes in the morning (10 am).  The teacher is an Indian lady (from India) and I really like her style.   I also go there for the cardio (mostly the eliptical machine) every time I drop off daughter at her dance classes.  She takes dance 3 times a week, so I go to the gym, which is very near her dance studio, at least that many times a week.  So far it's been working very well - why didn't I think of that before?  I loved going to the gym before and I still do!

I've made a few changes in my diet after checking out from the libray the book that Biscotti mentioned in her entries before - Overcoming overeating....(thank you, Biscotti!)  I can use a lot of that information for my benefit and for helping my daughter lose the weight she wants.  By the way, she has lost 4 pounds and is very happy with it (she looks great!), and she wants to keep up with the new eating style.  We don't call it a DIET anylonger, it's just a healthy way of eating when stomach hunger strikes (as opposed to mouth hunger.)  I feel good I'm teaching her good eating skills while not depriving her of foods. (we made lemon squares, yesterday and it was lovely)  Besides, she has learned to love all the healthy foods that I cook for my family nowadays (no added fat, lots of greens, legumes, fruits, fish) We found out that most things are delicious when we are hungry, haha!  Red meats are mainly for seasoning nowadays....

Gotta go now, I may not be able to come back here today, but will definetly catch up with you all next week when things get back to normal, when hubby goes back to work, that is.  Have a great day!

Progress as of today - 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

Good to see you! Glad you are doing well =) Yay for joining the gym and it fitting into your schedule beautifully! Congrats to your daughter as well on making changes in her lifestyle. It's so great that she has you to motivate her and I love the fact that you don't call it "dieting" either, as making a true permanent change in your lifestyle is so much more than that and you both will carry those changes on with you always. Keep it up and enjoy your weekend =D

Good morning everyone!  I'm so sorry I haven't been reading and commenting on your diaries - it's been a bit overwhelming around here, taking care of hubby and feeling really stressed out.   The whole situation reminds me of the time when I gave birth and had to come back home after only two days in the hospital and having to "wing it."  It's been stressful, to say the least.  Stay well everyone!

Thanks for the update--I hope the worst is over!

I feel for you and I hope he's up and around with no complications very soon (thanks to Nurse Selina who's definitely working over and above the call of duty:-)

I was just sitting there shaking my head as I read your comment to me. Don't go overboard--but if this is any time to ditch the dieting or caffeine cutdown--I don't know what is. It will get better! Plus all the up and down the stairs is burning extra calories, right?!?

All positive thoughts sent your and husband's way!

Good morning!

Thank you all, so much for the get well soon wishes and positive vibes, yesterday.  The surgery went well and we are all unbelievably relieved - now it's just a matter of time that is needed for recovery.  All nurses, staff and surgeon at the hospital were excellent and wonderful.   Having said that, I still have a big problem with the health care system in this country. Can you believe that they released him one hour after the surgery in which he had full anesthesia and was cut several inches big and his leg and hip bones intruded upon?  I just find the health care system in the US appalling - the insurance companies do not want to pay one single penny extra if they can help it!  I was talking to husband that in Geneva he would probably be in the hospital for at least a week for a surgery of this magnitude. (he was in the hospital for 10 days when he had his first surgery)  It reminded me of the time I had to pack up and leave the hospital soon after daughter was born, yikes.   At home, hubby is given lots of pain killers and will be recovering - he'll see the doctor again in a week.  Meanwhile, he will just have to put up with an amateur nurse (that would be me) for all his needs - meals in bed as well as "bird baths."  Gotta go now for I hear the bell and must see what is needed now... Only if I lived in a single level home - townhomes are definetly not nurse friendly.

I'm back!  He needed me to open the blinds/curtains so he could read the paper in daylight... I decided I won't go for a walk in the park today because I am already getting enough exercise going up and down the stairs as hubby rings his bell.   I'm thinking of taking that bell away from him sooner than later, ha!

So, my dieting yesterday went terribly (daughter stayed on track).  I was under so much stress and got so hungry at the hospital  for everything was delayed for a couple of hours. So, when I came back home, I just ate and ate... sad.

Progress as of today - 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

I'm so glad the surgery went well, but I can't believe he was released so soon! I had to stay in 2 nights after my surgery last year and I would have been better off at home - the nurses were overworked and the floor I was on was an absolute zoo. I came home exhausted and stressed out and had to recover at home. Your hubby is lucky to have a personal nurse at home ;)

Good to know he's all right and you too! :)

I'm so glad your husband can be on the mend now. And you can breathe a sigh of relief.

Don't get me started. I have to curb myself not to share (with DDs) the nightmare that my family experienced many years ago. It's in the past, but sadly the system hasn't changed--except for the worse. It's all about the money--ALL ABOUT THE MONEY! And we simply don't get what we pay for in the US. It's sickening.

Basic healthcare anywhere else is akin to a utility like the electric or water company--a basic of life.

Sorry to hijack your diary like that.

Please watch him closely--anyone with general anesthesia should be kept on a monitor for at least 24 hours in my opinion.

I'll be thinking of you!

Same for me here! After my surgery(never had anesthesia before then) I was sent home(and almost baker acted) the same day after having my left tube removed and losing my son!It is still a bit foggy but I was operated on at 6ish??am. Pumped up full of morphine and sent home by 4 in the afternoon :( Yes our healthcare system is a bit of a joke! I am sure you will get more than your fair share of cardio in after all is said and done! Don't work too hard Nurse Babe! LOL it has a ring to it doesn't it!

Sorry you are going through all of this. That is sad that after all of that your Hubby was 'thrown out' you might as well say. It's all about money these days, Friend. The government is getting bigger and they get their big raises while denying the people on Social Security their small, meager cost of living raises for 2 years straight now, with their excuses. Well, one good thing, since he won't be recovering in the hospital, that will keep him and you all away from hospital germs. Yes, it definitely sounds like you are getting your workout going up and down the stairs attending his needs. Good he has a wife and especially one that loves him and takes good care of him! Take care. :-)

So glad surgery went well. that must be a huge relief. Don't beat yourself too much for yesterday's stress-induced foods. I know what you mean about hospitals! I had frickin' brain surgery a few years ago and I was in the hospital a total of 3 days! I refer to it as my 'drive thru' surgery. Hope hubby's recovery is quick. Sorry your exercise is somewhat forced but it still is very good exercise! :)

Glad the surgery is over and the hubs is home. To be honest, the way things are in hospitals nowdays, he is probably safer and better cared for! And nevermind the laps on foods, many years ago when my hubs had back surgery, all I could eat was boxes of Noodle Roni. Yeah. You'll do much better now that it is over. Take care.

Wow, thats insane!! So glad he'll have you to help him recover at home. At least going up and down those stairs will burn some extra calories. :)

I think I will leave the commentary on the US health system for the citizens. Otherwise I will have to drag my soapbox out!!! Suffice to say I have only had one surgery (my lapband) which only took 40 minutes, but anyone who has full anesthetic in Australia is not allowed to leave hospital until the following day, even if you feel as if you could (which I did), in case of complications. I am however so glad that the surgery went well and hope that you are able to care for him well at home. I am sure you know this, but keep an eye on his temperature, any changes and you take him staight to the doctor/hospital. It is understandable that the diet got thrown out yesterday, it was not a priority. I hope that you and your husband have a good day and that he is able to manage his pain and you are able to manage him!! Hugs for both of you, just a gentle one for him.:)
