Good morning!

Daughter and I did very well, yesterday.  No slip ups, I'm so proud of her!  She is a dancer and spends a lot of energy at dance school 3 times a week, aside from her PE classes at middle school, so I'm certain she'll reach goal weight in no time.  Thanks for the words of encouragement, everyone, we appreciate them!

I've been doing some price comparison for a while between the different stores near my house and found that Whole Foods has the best price and quality for fruits and veggies.   Safeway does not fare very well in my research...

Stay well everyone!

Progress as of today - 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

sweetpea1977 on 01/05/2011:
Yay for another great day!!

I have heard lots of good things about Whole Foods. We have some in Atlanta, but none of them close enough to me. Sigh! You're so lucky!!

just42day on 01/05/2011:
Good idea comparison shopping. I'm always amazed how stores can price the exact same merchandise so differently!

smart to compare prices, im working on getting more into coupons and stuff and saving money myself i have named 2011 my 'healthier wealthier' year hehe.. im so proud of u and ur daughter sounds like u both r doing great! hope u have another great day! :-)

V on 01/05/2011:
It is because of just42day and Sweetpea that I now comparison shop! It is amazing the deals you find when you do a little research! Hey once again you and your daughter are doing a great job :) Have a good one!

loveray on 01/05/2011:
im so happy that you have a plan and are encouraging your daughter along the way. what an awesome mom!!

KathyBlue on 01/05/2011:
yeah, 10 pounds is nothing! Then she has to concentrate on healthy eating, as she has a healthy lifestyle already! :)

Umpqua on 01/05/2011:
I'm glad things are going well for you and your daughter! Our Whole Foods is pretty pricey, while Trader Joe's is a decent deal. I'm sure it all depends on the area we are in. When I lived in Oregon, Safeway was a great deal. We don't have them in the NE.

Maria7 on 01/05/2011:
Sounds like the 2 of you as a team are doing very well going toward your goal weights! Hope y'all have a nice day and that your Hubby is doing well, too. :-)

biscottibody59 on 01/05/2011:
Seems like Safeway and Tom Thumb (which we have near here) are the same company and Tom Thumb had notoriously priced its items generally as if they owned the freakin' world. So I'm not surprised you get a better deal at WF.

Have a good day!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 01/05/2011:
nice to hear about a mother and daughter team!

moogy on 01/05/2011:
Good researching Selina, it is great to find somewhere that had great quality fruits and vegies at a lesser cost. Good for you. So glad that you and your daughter are doing well. You are right she will probably drop down really quick with all the exercise and her youth!!! Ha!! Sweet youth, although I wouldn't want to do it again!! Have a good day selina.

Good morning!

Daughter and I had a successful dieting day, yesterday.  Both of us ended up consuming about 1400 cals of awesome, healthy food:

B: spinach omelet (no added oil), banana, blueberries

S: almonds

L. small bowl of corn chowder ( I bought a thermos for her to take hot soup to school) made with 0 fat milk, small apple

S. Yougurt

D: tofu, brocoli, salmon stir-fry with no added oil and bean soup.

She was excited about the diet and feels that she is finally able to lose those pounds she wants to lose (10 lbs) and I'm happy to be able to help her with foods that are healthy and nutritious.  I went to the market yesterday (whole foods) and bought a fridge full of veggies and fruits, so I feel ready for any event.

Today, I have lots of things going on... must rush out.  Will be back to comment later on....

Have a great day, everyone!

Progress as of today - 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

I'm really impressed with the quality of fresh produce at Whole Foods, esp. the chard and bok choy. That's wonderful how your daughter has adopted such a wholesome diet, instead of gorging on junk like most teens do.

Thomas Jefferson

Happy New Year to everyone!

Good morning!  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and got all the presents they wanted!  I had a wonderful time spending with family and extended families.  I wish the holidays lasted a bit longer, though.  Now that it's all over, it's time again to get back to my being watchful of calories to undo the little damage that I did to myself over the holidays.   Just a bit of indulging goes a long way!

My daughter, 14 y.o., feels that her jeans are getting a bit tight around her waist, so she asked me to help her lose a couple of pounds.... So, we are both watching our calories and eating more vegetables and fruits, as a tandem couple.  Husband is still on annual leave but is having his surgery on Thursday to remove hardware from his previous surgery (when he broke his leg while skiing), so we are a bit nervous in anticipation... We are hoping that pain gets better once he heals from surgery and he'll be able to be more physically active and exercise.

Stay well everyone!

That's great that you and your daughter can be partners in crime with your foods. I'm sure that will help both of you! I'm thinking good thoughts for your husband's upcoming surgery. :)

just42day on 01/03/2011:
btw; great quote!

KathyBlue on 01/03/2011:
awww, welcome back! :) Good luck on the double diet :). Your daughter can be growing still, not getting fat, don't you think it's the case? It must be hard to distinguish. And good luck for your husband's surgery, I believe it'll go OK! Sending positive vibes from PT! :)

V on 01/03/2011:
First of all congrats on not packing on holiday pounds! great job Selina!!! i am sure that your daughter will be thankful that you can assist her. I know at that age girls learn alot of unhealthy tricks to lose weight(If I recall correctly she is a ballerina right?) i am sure once she gets active again since school is back in session her weight will melt away! Wish it was that easy for us my friend! LOL have a good one :)

Thats cool that you and daughter will be on a weightloss journey together. It will be nice to have the in-family support to keep you on track with each other's goals. :)

It is great that you are teaching your daughter that losing weight is about eating healthily and not about deprevation. She will remember that!! I am sure that hubbies operation will go fine and that he will indeed be more able to be active - that would be wonderful. I love the quote and I love being able to speak with you again.:)

Good morning!

I feel better today after spending a pretty miserable weekend, coughing and sneezing.   I couldn't sleep well at night because of my dumb cough, so my daughter put some Vicks cream on my chest and hubby gave me a painkiller, so last night I was able to sleep a little better.  I hate when I get sick!

Progress as of today - 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

sweetpea1977 on 12/20/2010:
Me too. I hate being sick. Sleeping sucks and you cant seem to keep up with the demands of the day. I hope you are feeling better. :)

As for Ethan's Santa hat, we got it from Walmart for $1.50, lol.

KathyBlue on 12/20/2010:
ahh THAT cream! I remember the advertisement in Hungary lots of years ago... :-) Does it help actually? I always get Strepfen "candies" when I get to bed with cough ... and it helps. But I always wonder when will I choke on it while sleeping...

Just got over one of those about 3 weeks ago--it's always just as miserable as it ever was. Hope you continue to improve--get plenty of rest and fluids!

"Now, now my good man, this is no time for making enemies."    — Voltaire (1694-1778), on his deathbed in response to a priest asking that he renounce Satan.

Good morning!

So I was looking up quotes and found this one above, which made me LOL!  So I decided to post it because everyone deserves to have a good laugh!  I feel close to Voltaire in a sense that his chateau was only fifteen minutes from where I lived, just across the border from Switzerland, in France.  The chateau is fascinating and open to the public for visits.  Voltaire was an enlightened person in life and it made me laugh that he still kept his sense of humor in his deathbed...

I hope I can keep a sense of humor in LIFE!  Yesterday was a day I needed most since I was not feeling well at all. I had a bad chest cold and headache - I think I'm coming down with something - not the flu, because I took the flu shot this fall.  Nevertheless, I was able to do a lot: made two batches of butter cookies and decorated them, too.  Of course, I tasted them, too, but did not go overboard.  Now I have lots of pretty cookies in the house and will be able to give as gifts, as well.  My daughter loves it that I bake and decorate them and Hubby is happy that I, too, have a Christmas tradition - baking his late mom's butter cookies for the holidays!

Aside from tasting the butter cookies, eating went very well yesterday.  I'm looking forward to seeing changes in the scale in the near future!

Have a great day, you all!

They are also a welcome addition to this male-dominated household. Even our dog is male, so the energy around here has changed already!

Good morning!

I'm in winter wonderland!  Daughter's school started 2 hours later today, so I got to sleep in, which was so necessary because I was awake from 3am to 5 am thinking about all kinds of things: painting techniques, gifts to wrap, butter cookies to bake, shopping to do, painting techniques, and did I mention painting?  How crazy is that - I paint all day and I lose sleep thinking about it?  I'm blaming it on my dieting... I took in about 1300 cals, yesterday, so that must be it!

Have a good day, everyone!

Great job with the calories! If I do wake up at night it is always around 3 or 4 a.m. and then my mind gets hooked on something and I obsess about it. I'm glad you got some extra sleep!

P.S. I made my tomato sauce without olive oil yesterday and noticed no difference :) Baby steps!

Good morning!

It's supposed to snow, today, Yay!!!!  It's so cold outside, I hate the cold, I love the snow, we'll see....

So I did lose some weight, it means that all this effort is paying off.  Well, actually it doesn't feel like it's an effort, anymore... really.  I totall like this fashion of eating and don't miss the unhealthy stuff anymore...

So, I must do some more shopping today and have a date with my girfriends in the evening - they all want to visit the exhibit at the  gallery and have dinner together later....  sounds fun to me!

I hope you are all doing great and not too tired from preparing for the holidays!

UPDATE:  IT"S SNOWING, YAY!  Daughter has a 2-hour early release from school, which is a real neat thing for her.  The downside is that I have to cancel the outing this evening - too dangerous driving at night in the snow when I'm not used to it.  That's ok, I can reschedule.

Progress as of today - 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

just42day on 12/16/2010:
Yeah on the loss! That's fabulous that you don't miss the unhealthy food and that you're enjoying this journey! Have a great evening w/your friends tonight and keep up the great work. It's clearly paying off. Hip hip hooray! :)

Glad the scale is moving in the right direction for you, especially at this time of year!

Snow is great, if you don't have to go out in it. I'll guaranteed at least a 2 hour commute home with the snow today. I'm leave a bit early to hopefully get a jump on it. Have a great day!

Hi Everyone!

So, i had a pretty busy day, didn't have much time to come online...  I bought Christmas presents for hubby and most of the presents for daughter. There are still many I must buy for brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephew, niece.  My side of the family doesn't exchange gifts (thank goodness), so a few more trips to the shopping mall and I'll be done.  I still have to buy that elusive tree, haha.  Tomorrow, I hope.  It's so cold here (-10 C) and I hate to go out, only when necessary.  We are expecting snow tomorrow, my daughter is super excited about it.

We were planning to go to the west coast (Seattle) for the passage of the year, even bought the plane tickets, but must cancel.  Hubby went to the doctor today and he needs surgery which will take place on the 6th of January.  He had a fall several years ago while skiing in the Swiss Alps and his leg/hip is presently giving him a lot of pain - thus the surgery.  The doctor thinks that once he removes the pins /bolts and plaques that keep his bones together, the pain will also go away.  I hope so.  Oh, well, c'est la vie...  I've been massaging his legs and feet to see if he feels better, poor thing.  Now, daughter also wants foot massages... I wish someone would massage my feet, lol

Last, but not least, eating has been fantastic!  I've been eating a lot of fruits and veggies, salmon, beans, and very little - next to nothing- of red meat.  Also, I stopped using oils (even olive oil) after reading that article Biscotti posted the other day.  I don't miss it!  Portions also haven been good -  I feel in control!

I hope everyone is doing great!

Progress as of today - 18 lbs lost so far, only 29 lbs to go!

V on 12/15/2010:
Hey girly!!! I am sorry you have to cancel on the trip :( Are you hosting Christmas this year??? Man it's cold where you are, so I will stop griping so much about the weather here!!! Yes Biscotti has surely has been a source of some extremely useful knowledge...I have been pondering for months now as to the meat eating and after watching the video and purchased the book, I am gonna attempt that lifestyle as well :) I haven't seen her around these parts lately but I think she created quite a stir with some of us!!! Congrats on your healthier eating and I hope you get that shopping done soon so you can avoid the mad dash and crowds next week is sure to bring :) Good night!

Umpqua on 12/15/2010:
Sorry to hear about hubby's surgery, but it's good he's getting it taken care of. Your foods sound wonderful! I just ordered Esselstyn's book Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease based on Biscotti's info in both her diaries. We've also been eating very little red meat and I've cut way back on meat in general, doing mostly beans and veggies with some whole grains and fish. I do use olive oil and my boys like nuts though, so that's a tough part of the book to follow. I'm interested in seeing some of the recipes he has as well and what kind of alternatives he offers. I'm game to try anything! Have a good evening!

just42day on 12/15/2010:
Great job with your food and portion size! That's fabulous! Sorry you have to cancel your trip. I'm sure your hubby and daughter appreciate the massages. Certainly, between the two of them, you should get at least one in return! :)

moogy on 12/15/2010:
Well done on the food front Selina. It is always great to feel in control and doing well. Sorry about you having to cancel your trip. I always wonder who cares for the carer. Look after yourself as well as everyone else.!! Perhaps hubby will pay for a massage for you!!

Good morning!

Yesterday I just threw in a motivational quote as my entry post and planned to come back to update but I was so busy I never had the time, so sorry I didn't get to your entries....  One of the reasons is that Hubby is off work (annual leave) and he is hanging out around the house, ha!  So, today is going to be the same thing....  I still have tons to do before Christmas, so at least we'll be doing it together (hubby and me.)   Eating has been great - I haven't had any problems overeating and have been able to keep calories low enough that I might even see some loss soon, I hope!

Have a great day!

like hell it is! yes, that is a fine quote indeed. it's so terribly challenging though...i wonder how many of us truly can live that way. :-)

Isn't that funny, I always thought that I trusted myself with everything, except food. Maybe now I can work on that too. What a good quote. Thank you for your kind words Selina.:)

love it, it's so true! i used to live in a very contained world - and, in fact, i moved in to my own apartment with no roommate to "make my eating habits better" - really, i was just living in isolation and neglecting the fact that i didnt trust myself around any food at all! living with seth was my training ground around other peoples food. i can say now that i fully trust myself around food- knowing that i will have some slip ups...i have been in a house where everything is allowed and im doing just fine! hallelujah. i never thought i would be able to have kids because i didnt know how to be alone with food in the house.

Did you go out on your birthday? Good to see an entry from you today but miss reading how you're doing.
