Good morning everyone!  I'm so sorry I haven't been reading and commenting on your diaries - it's been a bit overwhelming around here, taking care of hubby and feeling really stressed out.   The whole situation reminds me of the time when I gave birth and had to come back home after only two days in the hospital and having to "wing it."  It's been stressful, to say the least.  Stay well everyone!

Progress as of today: 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

V on 01/11/2011:
Hi Nurse Babe! I hope you are at least able to get a little Selina time in...I am sure you are not used to having the hubby around as much, I hope is not too overwhelming! Take care!

liza36 on 01/11/2011:
Have you taken the bell away yet? I hope the recovery is going well, although I know it can be pretty stressful. Hang in there.

sweetpea1977 on 01/11/2011:
Aww, hang in there honey. He'll be better soon and you'll get your life back. If you can, take some "ME" time. You need some space to take care of yourself too, you know! xo

biscottibody59 on 01/11/2011:
Thanks for the update--I hope the worst is over!

I feel for you and I hope he's up and around with no complications very soon (thanks to Nurse Selina who's definitely working over and above the call of duty:-)

I was just sitting there shaking my head as I read your comment to me. Don't go overboard--but if this is any time to ditch the dieting or caffeine cutdown--I don't know what is. It will get better! Plus all the up and down the stairs is burning extra calories, right?!?

All positive thoughts sent your and husband's way!

Umpqua on 01/11/2011:
I'm sorry you're having a stressful time, try to take care of yourself too - I know it's not easy!

Hang in there Selina, we will still be here when you have stopped nursing and running around. Look after yourself as well as your husband.:) Hugs.

moogy on 01/15/2011:
Hi Selina, I was just thinking about you and hoping that things are going well. I hope that your husband is recovering well and that you are coping with the load you are carrying at the moment. I miss your entries and comments. Hang in there:)

Please let us know how you all are doing, Selena. :-)

I haven't heard from you in quite some time :( I hope everything is okay for you, You were sounding a bit distressed the last post! Well I am sending my love! I miss you

Good morning!

Thank you all, so much for the get well soon wishes and positive vibes, yesterday.  The surgery went well and we are all unbelievably relieved - now it's just a matter of time that is needed for recovery.  All nurses, staff and surgeon at the hospital were excellent and wonderful.   Having said that, I still have a big problem with the health care system in this country. Can you believe that they released him one hour after the surgery in which he had full anesthesia and was cut several inches big and his leg and hip bones intruded upon?  I just find the health care system in the US appalling - the insurance companies do not want to pay one single penny extra if they can help it!  I was talking to husband that in Geneva he would probably be in the hospital for at least a week for a surgery of this magnitude. (he was in the hospital for 10 days when he had his first surgery)  It reminded me of the time I had to pack up and leave the hospital soon after daughter was born, yikes.   At home, hubby is given lots of pain killers and will be recovering - he'll see the doctor again in a week.  Meanwhile, he will just have to put up with an amateur nurse (that would be me) for all his needs - meals in bed as well as "bird baths."  Gotta go now for I hear the bell and must see what is needed now... Only if I lived in a single level home - townhomes are definetly not nurse friendly.

I'm back!  He needed me to open the blinds/curtains so he could read the paper in daylight... I decided I won't go for a walk in the park today because I am already getting enough exercise going up and down the stairs as hubby rings his bell.   I'm thinking of taking that bell away from him sooner than later, ha!

So, my dieting yesterday went terribly (daughter stayed on track).  I was under so much stress and got so hungry at the hospital  for everything was delayed for a couple of hours. So, when I came back home, I just ate and ate... sad.

Progress as of today: 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 01/07/2011:
I'm so glad the surgery went well, but I can't believe he was released so soon! I had to stay in 2 nights after my surgery last year and I would have been better off at home - the nurses were overworked and the floor I was on was an absolute zoo. I came home exhausted and stressed out and had to recover at home. Your hubby is lucky to have a personal nurse at home ;)

KathyBlue on 01/07/2011:
Good to know he's all right and you too! :)

biscottibody59 on 01/07/2011:
I'm so glad your husband can be on the mend now. And you can breathe a sigh of relief.

Don't get me started. I have to curb myself not to share (with DDs) the nightmare that my family experienced many years ago. It's in the past, but sadly the system hasn't changed--except for the worse. It's all about the money--ALL ABOUT THE MONEY! And we simply don't get what we pay for in the US. It's sickening.

Basic healthcare anywhere else is akin to a utility like the electric or water company--a basic of life.

Sorry to hijack your diary like that.

Please watch him closely--anyone with general anesthesia should be kept on a monitor for at least 24 hours in my opinion.

I'll be thinking of you!

V on 01/07/2011:
Same for me here! After my surgery(never had anesthesia before then) I was sent home(and almost baker acted) the same day after having my left tube removed and losing my son!It is still a bit foggy but I was operated on at 6ish??am. Pumped up full of morphine and sent home by 4 in the afternoon :( Yes our healthcare system is a bit of a joke! I am sure you will get more than your fair share of cardio in after all is said and done! Don't work too hard Nurse Babe! LOL it has a ring to it doesn't it!

Maria7 on 01/07/2011:
Sorry you are going through all of this. That is sad that after all of that your Hubby was 'thrown out' you might as well say. It's all about money these days, Friend. The government is getting bigger and they get their big raises while denying the people on Social Security their small, meager cost of living raises for 2 years straight now, with their excuses. Well, one good thing, since he won't be recovering in the hospital, that will keep him and you all away from hospital germs. Yes, it definitely sounds like you are getting your workout going up and down the stairs attending his needs. Good he has a wife and especially one that loves him and takes good care of him! Take care. :-)

just42day on 01/07/2011:
So glad surgery went well. that must be a huge relief. Don't beat yourself too much for yesterday's stress-induced foods. I know what you mean about hospitals! I had frickin' brain surgery a few years ago and I was in the hospital a total of 3 days! I refer to it as my 'drive thru' surgery. Hope hubby's recovery is quick. Sorry your exercise is somewhat forced but it still is very good exercise! :)

chidogs on 01/07/2011:
Glad the surgery is over and the hubs is home. To be honest, the way things are in hospitals nowdays, he is probably safer and better cared for! And nevermind the laps on foods, many years ago when my hubs had back surgery, all I could eat was boxes of Noodle Roni. Yeah. You'll do much better now that it is over. Take care.

sweetpea1977 on 01/07/2011:
Wow, thats insane!! So glad he'll have you to help him recover at home. At least going up and down those stairs will burn some extra calories. :)

moogy on 01/07/2011:
I think I will leave the commentary on the US health system for the citizens. Otherwise I will have to drag my soapbox out!!! Suffice to say I have only had one surgery (my lapband) which only took 40 minutes, but anyone who has full anesthetic in Australia is not allowed to leave hospital until the following day, even if you feel as if you could (which I did), in case of complications. I am however so glad that the surgery went well and hope that you are able to care for him well at home. I am sure you know this, but keep an eye on his temperature, any changes and you take him staight to the doctor/hospital. It is understandable that the diet got thrown out yesterday, it was not a priority. I hope that you and your husband have a good day and that he is able to manage his pain and you are able to manage him!! Hugs for both of you, just a gentle one for him.:)

biscottibody59 on 01/10/2011:
Hope your husband is still doing well--I'll be thinking positive thoughts 'til you update.

Good morning!

So, my daughter did much better than I did yesterday with the calory intake, but I did ok, too.   Maybe around 1500 for me and 1350 for daughter...  I did get 1 hour of walking and jogging in the morning - my body feels a bit sore from the exercise, yesterday.

Hubby is having his surgery this p.m., so I'm a bit nervous about it.  I know everything is going to be ok, but I just can't help it.  He has been in so much pain in the past few months that he has no other choice...

Have a good day, everyone!

Good morning!

Daughter and I did very well, yesterday.  No slip ups, I'm so proud of her!  She is a dancer and spends a lot of energy at dance school 3 times a week, aside from her PE classes at middle school, so I'm certain she'll reach goal weight in no time.  Thanks for the words of encouragement, everyone, we appreciate them!

I've been doing some price comparison for a while between the different stores near my house and found that Whole Foods has the best price and quality for fruits and veggies.   Safeway does not fare very well in my research...

Stay well everyone!

sweetpea1977 on 01/05/2011:

I have heard lots of good things about Whole Foods. We have some in Atlanta, but none of them close enough to me. Sigh! You're so lucky!!

It is because of just42day and Sweetpea that I now comparison shop! It is amazing the deals you find when you do a little research! Hey once again you and your daughter are doing a great job :) Have a good one!

im so happy that you have a plan and are encouraging your daughter along the way. what an awesome mom!!

KathyBlue on 01/05/2011:
yeah, 10 pounds is nothing! Then she has to concentrate on healthy eating, as she has a healthy lifestyle already! :)

Umpqua on 01/05/2011:
I'm glad things are going well for you and your daughter! Our Whole Foods is pretty pricey, while Trader Joe's is a decent deal. I'm sure it all depends on the area we are in. When I lived in Oregon, Safeway was a great deal. We don't have them in the NE.

Maria7 on 01/05/2011:
Sounds like the 2 of you as a team are doing very well going toward your goal weights! Hope y'all have a nice day and that your Hubby is doing well, too. :-)

biscottibody59 on 01/05/2011:
Seems like Safeway and Tom Thumb (which we have near here) are the same company and Tom Thumb had notoriously priced its items generally as if they owned the freakin' world. So I'm not surprised you get a better deal at WF.

Have a good day!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 01/05/2011:
nice to hear about a mother and daughter team!

moogy on 01/05/2011:
Good researching Selina, it is great to find somewhere that had great quality fruits and vegies at a lesser cost. Good for you. So glad that you and your daughter are doing well. You are right she will probably drop down really quick with all the exercise and her youth!!! Ha!! Sweet youth, although I wouldn't want to do it again!! Have a good day selina.

Good morning!

Daughter and I had a successful dieting day, yesterday.  Both of us ended up consuming about 1400 cals of awesome, healthy food:

B: spinach omelet (no added oil), banana, blueberries

S: almonds

L. small bowl of corn chowder ( I bought a thermos for her to take hot soup to school) made with 0 fat milk, small apple

S. Yougurt

D: tofu, brocoli, salmon stir-fry with no added oil and bean soup.

She was excited about the diet and feels that she is finally able to lose those pounds she wants to lose (10 lbs) and I'm happy to be able to help her with foods that are healthy and nutritious.  I went to the market yesterday (whole foods) and bought a fridge full of veggies and fruits, so I feel ready for any event.

Today, I have lots of things going on... must rush out.  Will be back to comment later on....

Have a great day, everyone!

Progress as of today: 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

"Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you."
Thomas Jefferson

Happy New Year to everyone!

Good morning!  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and got all the presents they wanted!  I had a wonderful time spending with family and extended families.  I wish the holidays lasted a bit longer, though.  Now that it's all over, it's time again to get back to my being watchful of calories to undo the little damage that I did to myself over the holidays.   Just a bit of indulging goes a long way!

My daughter, 14 y.o., feels that her jeans are getting a bit tight around her waist, so she asked me to help her lose a couple of pounds.... So, we are both watching our calories and eating more vegetables and fruits, as a tandem couple.  Husband is still on annual leave but is having his surgery on Thursday to remove hardware from his previous surgery (when he broke his leg while skiing), so we are a bit nervous in anticipation... We are hoping that pain gets better once he heals from surgery and he'll be able to be more physically active and exercise.

Stay well everyone!

Good morning!

I feel better today after spending a pretty miserable weekend, coughing and sneezing.   I couldn't sleep well at night because of my dumb cough, so my daughter put some Vicks cream on my chest and hubby gave me a painkiller, so last night I was able to sleep a little better.  I hate when I get sick!

ahh THAT cream! I remember the advertisement in Hungary lots of years ago... :-) Does it help actually? I always get Strepfen "candies" when I get to bed with cough ... and it helps. But I always wonder when will I choke on it while sleeping...

"Now, now my good man, this is no time for making enemies."    — Voltaire (1694-1778), on his deathbed in response to a priest asking that he renounce Satan.

Good morning!

So I was looking up quotes and found this one above, which made me LOL!  So I decided to post it because everyone deserves to have a good laugh!  I feel close to Voltaire in a sense that his chateau was only fifteen minutes from where I lived, just across the border from Switzerland, in France.  The chateau is fascinating and open to the public for visits.  Voltaire was an enlightened person in life and it made me laugh that he still kept his sense of humor in his deathbed...

I hope I can keep a sense of humor in LIFE!  Yesterday was a day I needed most since I was not feeling well at all. I had a bad chest cold and headache - I think I'm coming down with something - not the flu, because I took the flu shot this fall.  Nevertheless, I was able to do a lot: made two batches of butter cookies and decorated them, too.  Of course, I tasted them, too, but did not go overboard.  Now I have lots of pretty cookies in the house and will be able to give as gifts, as well.  My daughter loves it that I bake and decorate them and Hubby is happy that I, too, have a Christmas tradition - baking his late mom's butter cookies for the holidays!

Aside from tasting the butter cookies, eating went very well yesterday.  I'm looking forward to seeing changes in the scale in the near future!

Have a great day, you all!

Good morning!

I'm in winter wonderland!  Daughter's school started 2 hours later today, so I got to sleep in, which was so necessary because I was awake from 3am to 5 am thinking about all kinds of things: painting techniques, gifts to wrap, butter cookies to bake, shopping to do, painting techniques, and did I mention painting?  How crazy is that - I paint all day and I lose sleep thinking about it?  I'm blaming it on my dieting... I took in about 1300 cals, yesterday, so that must be it!

Have a good day, everyone!

Progress as of today: 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

oh wow! i hear there is a ton of snow up there! i love that you have such a passion for your work that it consumes your thoughts! i will blame the diet as well:) haha

Great job with the calories! If I do wake up at night it is always around 3 or 4 a.m. and then my mind gets hooked on something and I obsess about it. I'm glad you got some extra sleep!

Umpqua on 12/17/2010:
P.S. I made my tomato sauce without olive oil yesterday and noticed no difference :) Baby steps!

LOL!!!! My mind wanders all night....I try to "will" it into shutting down as I lie awake in the wee hours of the night/morning and it sometimes never shuts off :(

Do you drink caffeinated drinks before bedtime??? I don't like when I do that...when I'm awake going over things in my mind... Sounds like you're in a pretty winter wonderland up there! :-)

Good morning!

It's supposed to snow, today, Yay!!!!  It's so cold outside, I hate the cold, I love the snow, we'll see....

So I did lose some weight, it means that all this effort is paying off.  Well, actually it doesn't feel like it's an effort, anymore... really.  I totall like this fashion of eating and don't miss the unhealthy stuff anymore...

So, I must do some more shopping today and have a date with my girfriends in the evening - they all want to visit the exhibit at the  gallery and have dinner together later....  sounds fun to me!

I hope you are all doing great and not too tired from preparing for the holidays!

UPDATE:  IT"S SNOWING, YAY!  Daughter has a 2-hour early release from school, which is a real neat thing for her.  The downside is that I have to cancel the outing this evening - too dangerous driving at night in the snow when I'm not used to it.  That's ok, I can reschedule.

Progress as of today: 18.5 lbs lost so far, only 28.5 lbs to go!

Yeah on the loss! That's fabulous that you don't miss the unhealthy food and that you're enjoying this journey! Have a great evening w/your friends tonight and keep up the great work. It's clearly paying off. Hip hip hooray! :)

Great progress--keep up the good work!

Saw your previous entry--it's nice to see others getting something out of my discovery--I hope I get something out of it too. I have hope for the long run:-)

Umpqua on 12/16/2010:
Congrats on the loss!! I'm going to try your suggestion and skip the olive oil in my sauce today. I don't think I'll give it up completely, but I can definitely make substitutions sometimes. I'm so glad you're enjoying this way of eating - I haven't missed meat much either, but I'm getting just enough to keep me satisfied!

Glad the scale is moving in the right direction for you, especially at this time of year!

Snow is great, if you don't have to go out in it. I'll guaranteed at least a 2 hour commute home with the snow today. I'm leave a bit early to hopefully get a jump on it. Have a great day!

Yay for snow!! Enjoy some for me. Oh, and take pictures if the mood strikes ya. :)

Congrats on your loss and accepting your new lifestyle. I love it when a healthy lifestyle becomes second nature!

Snow is so beautiful to look at, it magical. Not that great to try and work and shop in though, but watching it fall is something special. I hope you have a good day Selina and thank you for your comment.:)
