Hi-

Didn't get on  DD yesterday to record my foods.

B- Pumperknickel toast w/ little butter & honey, L- Brocolli/cheddar soup at Paneras ( cup) with piece of fr bread, D- vegg burger & stir fried greens Snacks-yogurt,  too many pretzels...Hmm.. relaized that I had no fruit. Good to write down food for that reason alone.

So two days without wine & it isn't bothering me- just a habit so would like to have more days without wine than with- I'll see how that goes.

No exercise yesterday- just shopping , visiting, stopping by the grandchildren as they did their homework.

Today off to my rug hooking group- a great group of women from 92-30's in age. Like the days  when women got together to knit or darn- great conversations and support. They have been very supportive while I've been away & welcoming when I return.

B- pumperknickel toast, atuna sandwich picked up at trader Joe's yesterday, supposed to  be 300 calories., same dinner as last night , snacks, carrots, yogurt, apple

Basically still haven't seen a change in the scale & the number posted is not even close so may be forced to change it - again more of a motivator for me to keep it & try to get back to that number but I have to be realistic & will change it in 2 weeks.

I think your foods from yesterday look good, and I agree it's helpful to post too see areas where we may be lacking or taking in too much. Your rug group sounds wonderful, I'm sure it's a lot of fun!

That is so cool that you have a warm welcoming committee and support from them while you were away :) Good job on cutting back on the wine intake. I have been trying to do the same til vacation..It helps when I don't pick up bottles from the store.LOL I made the mistake of buying one yesterday and as I was heating up dinner out of habit I opened it..Sure i could have corked it but I didn't. So I broke my no drinking during the work week rule but for the next 2 weeks no more buying it til Saturday cause i just can't resist..

Hi,

Any day that starts with Zumba is a good day. I'm still faking some of the moves but at least I have some sense of the beat so can keep up with most of it.

Today enjoying the light snow- one of the tv weather men called it "mood snow". Lovely light snow.

Now getting my Christmas card thing going.. don't know why it always takes awhile- getting addresses revised, figuring out do we want to send a newsletter- sorry for those of you who hate that idea- or a card & do we want to send pictures  & then which ones?? But at least I have time to do all of that.

Yesterday's food- like many days , I start great , even up until dinner & then a few too many snacks. But kept the daily calorie around 1400.

Today- eggs for breakfast prepared by my husband who uses a good amount of butter, lunch tomato soup with crackers, snack banana & will have yogurt later. Husband is making a healthy version of a Chinese noodle soup for dinner. I am not , repeat not having any wine today. Bad habit to have wine everyday- and probably not so good health wise as one glass usually goes to another 1/2 or 1 more . So again going to stay within my 1400 calorie count.

Today's snow was absolutely gorgeous - enough to coat the trees but not the roadways! Good for you for getting Zumba in, fake moves or not it's still a great workout. I hope you're having a good evening!

I'd be faking all the moves--haha! Seriously, I tried group classes several times and except for belly dancing--it was always a disaster. It's good to hear your positive reaction to statins and definitely good for your sleep! Just keep on going forward! I hear you on the aging, though I'm still in the throes of blaming good ol' menopause.

Mood snow would be nice around here--but I've still got some leaves to tend to!

Good job on the Zumba! I'm the same as you, can be good all day then after dinner I'm looking for snacks. I use that 1 cal pan spray to cook eggs. Works fine.

RYC I've got the yucky gray as well. I see some women whose gray hair is just lovely. I wouldn't mind gray then.

We have phoned all the travel clinics in the city (Glasgow). None have it. I think it's very hard if not impossible to find anywhere in the UK. We should be okay. I asked some Ugandan friends if they ever had typhoid fever and none has.

Hi all,

I hate to report my lack of progress... Trying to get back on track today. Just haven't been able to say no when various temptations arise. So at least for this week will post my food here on DD.

Exercise has been ok. I enjoy the classes at LA Fitness. Today went to Body works, mostly weights and some floor exercise. A few too many lunges for my old knees but I try to take it easy on those and don't use the weights as my knees don't need added weight. Tomorrow will go to Zumba. I've also been walking in between. I'll try to get to the gym 3 times this week.

So for today- B- cheerios w/ 2% milk, lunch low cal chicken noodle soup, snacks- a few crackers, banana , yogurt. Dinner will be small serving of pasta with meat sauce and salad.

Thanksgiving was nice & spent a couple of days with my daughter & family .

Other than that- trying to get some shopping done for Christmas, getting back into some kind of routine, trying to be social even though I'm not in the mood. Missing my life in Singapore... Guess I just have to get through this time.

I understand as I'm battling temptations all the time - sometimes I give in, sometimes I don't. I hurt my knees doing lunges if I let my knees go past my feet. Could that be why your knees hurt?

RYC thanks! The spot for the turbines is being pushed by that community as it will make them a lot of money. We are loudly objecting!

Hi-

I'm back home in the US and settling in. I had my daughter and family here the week that we got back as she had no power at her house. So this week  we're getting back to normal. I'm missing Singapore and the simplicity of my life there but I have to get on with things here and get back & involved.

Have not been focusing on the scale or on what I've been eating so getting back here is my first step. I did sign up for my gym so will get back there this week. Right now am sharing a car with my husband and waiting for him to buy a new car so that's limiting my driving a bit.

Thanks for your comments on my friend who died and my fall. I'm still in some state of disbelief about her death- even though I did go to her wake and saw her in the casket ( I'm not such a fan of open caskets). She was a traveler, a bungi jumper, sailer, horseback rider, dirver for senior citizens type of person. And maybe there is also that sense of her being my age and to see how someone can die who was in good health. Although is was related to her recent surgery so didn't just come from nowhere.

So what is my plan?1.  To get back to exercising at the gym and walking.  2. To write down my calories and exercise- I have an app that I like..  3. To get back on the scale in 1 week. and report back here.

Will try to catch up with DD posts.

Hi-

Still here, postponed flight untio Friday. So clearing out of apt as it is rented as of Nov 1 & checking into hotel. Glad we changed when we did otherwise would have been grounded in Tokyo.

I had a bad fall on Sunday. Still not sure how it happened but I lost my footing and , tripped on something?, and the next thing I knew I was picking myself up from the pavement with a bloody face. I couldn't tell if I might need stiches so took myself to the A&E where they were kind of worthess but didn't think stiches were necessary & I do agree with that. Then next day went to the ortho Dr & got xrays of my knee and a toe that was bruised Just a bruised kneecap & slight fracture of a toe. But I am seriously a mess. Cuts under my nose & on my nose, bruised and swollen lip & now that its healing it doesn't look much better.  Weird, huh?! I' m glad that I didn't break anything or  knock out a tooth, although I guess I chipped a small piece of a tooth. Oh also scratched my glasses and broke my watch! Now I just joke about it and ask anyone I meet - which part of my face do you like the best, the bruise or the cuts?  So , some way to leave Singapore! Certainly took my mind off of any emotional departure.

Second sad thing was that a good friend died on Sunday. She died of a blood clot after knee repacement surgery. We worked together, did alot of ski trips together- to Austria, Colorado, Utah, and local . She was a good person and I have many great memories, but such a shock. She wrote me an email just on Oct 26 about how well she was doing.

Ok, I stay optimistic. Think psitive you know. I don't dwell on sad events, I move on. And so I will.

Going out for a walk , then cleaning out a few things before our cleaning lady comes and then the hand over of the key this afternoon. We're staying at a nice hotel so that ahould be okay & then flying back business class so can't complain about that.

Looking forward to getting back home, seeing family & friends, rejoining my gym & getting back to a healthy diet. Did I mention that I shipped my scale on the 23rd? That may give you a clue about how things have been going here...Not good in that dept.

I am so sorry about your friend <3 also about your mishap :( Yes it is a good thing you postponed your departure, they say it will be a few days before the flights will be back on schedule.. I heard from Umpqua, although they lost power, she said they didn't have any damage so that is good news :) Have a good day, take care..

sorry about your friend,things can happen so fast. goodness, what a wicked fall, thank goodness you didn't break anything, last spring i fell up some steps and broke several toes, no one will let me forget i fell up the steps. hope you reach your home safely

It's really unfortunate about your friend--hang in there!

Be careful out there--I've had some close calls for falling just in my kitchen involving rushing to or from the kitchen. (I'm not a klutz, but I've found the last 4 or 5 years I really have to be careful.) Recently I heard of a woman who was texting and walking and sustained a very complicated lower leg injury. She ended up having multiple surgeries and still hasn't fully healed after more than a year.

I'm glad you didn't have any broken bones (other than the toe--hope it heals fine), but what you do have doesn't sound like much fun either! Take care!

Hi,

Just checking in. Right now I'm having pretzels and peach chutney. I know, what's wrong with me? Well that's just an example of what my eating has been like this last week. The peach chutney is one of the items in the pantry that would have to find a home or get thrown out so I decided to have a little snack. Today a good bye brunch ,  last night a good bye dinner, the day before an afternoon tea where we ate way too much.

So we leave here on Tuesday morning, fly to Tokyo and then to Wash DC & then home. Well that's the plan  & now let's see what really will happen with the hurricane hitting at about the same time.

It's hard saying good-bye to people that i have become fond of. I know it's part of the ex pat life but it's a first for me & I don't like this phase of it.

Hope everyone on the east coast in the path of the storm fares okay during the storm. I have a feeling that it do alot of damage.

I hope the storm doesn't keep you from meeting all your schedules home! From what I've been watching, it's a hurricane, nor'easter, arctic front (for some) and I guess a couple of other things all in one storm including a full moon to affect the tides. Hang in there come what may!

Hi all,

I'm back from my fabulous trip to Australia. It was 16 days, included  6 flights, 5 hotels, some great tours, wonderful scenery and experiences and some great meals.It's hard to say what my favorite place was as all locations were great and very different - Sidney which incuded a tour and performance at the Opera House and a day in the Blue Mountains, Cairns- what can I say , I snorkled at the Great Reef with colorful coral and fish, the nicest beaches just north of Cairns, the red center of Australia with the highlight of a Sounds of Silence dinner, wonderful food under the starry sky and of course a sunrise tour of Uluru, the huge red rock that everyone comes to see.Then the final stops of Perth and Margaret River- if there is a paradise I think I was just there- Margaret River, many    vineyards where you can stop for tastings, gorgeous beaches, sheep, cows, kangaroos, lovely litle towns and we stayed at a small hotel with the best breakfast spread and lovely garden. Perth, a friendly city with again nice beaches and botanic garden and museums.

So with all of that and little thought of dieting I gained 3 lbs which wasn't that bad given that I ate three meals each day and it seems that Australia wants everyone to eat lots of chip ( fries). Thankfully I can do without but did have to sample.But we did alot of walking and were pretty busy every day.I am not changing my posted weight as I have high hopes of getting rid of those three lbs.

Now I have 9 days left here in Singapore  and then home to the US so alot of little things to do- some packing but most of the packing will be done by the movers who come on the 23rd so I have to get things organized for them as there will be some things we'l take back in suitcases and then some things that we'll leave behind.

Saw a great documentary on the plane- think the title was forknot knife, or something like that & was all about a plant only food plan and the reason why two prominent drs both came to that conlusion after many studies. OK I am convinced about the plant diet but I wonder if there are studies about a mostly plant diet and not eliminating meat and fish entirely. Anyway something to think about and wonder how if I can come somewhat closer to cutting back on meat.

Hi-

Didn't mean to be absent for so long. Life has been busy  with all of my day to day activities. Also trying to sort out some of my things for our move back home .

I haven't been doing the best in the eating department. Just not being on track- or being on track until late afternoon and then eating silly stuff- baked doritos for instance... I was blaming some recent medication on gaining a couple of pounds( not recorded  here as I am determind to get rid of them!) but I just have been a bit to lax. So need to get back on track !

Exercise continues to be good. Today lots of walking ,yesterday was a gym day & tomorrow will get to the gym.

I had mentioned my tests on my heart health and  ( damn it sucks to get old!) it does appear that I have a small amount of plaque on some of my arteries. So back on statins- I had been prescribed statins by my local Dr but then stopped when I went for my tests because I was getting leg cramps. The latest medication seems to have no side effects- except that I wanted to pin weight gain on them but as it turns out only 2 % of people have weight gain. So at least I know what is going on .

Going to Australia next Wed. Still haven't heard from Moogy so probably not a good time for her. But would love to get together in Sydney ( I think that's where she's from). We have a super trip planned including going to the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru and Margaret River.

Then planning our move back to the states. But have no moving date yet. Right. I might be in denial... But my husband has been away for the last week so waiting for him to return to make that decision. I'm going t miss alot people here. Starting to say my god-byes. Decided  to make this week & next my last days for activities.

Going to catch up with some posts.

Good that you're continuing to workout. You'll get back on track with food, it's only giving up that's bad. :)

Would be nice if you could meet up with Moogy. I hope to meet up with her when we go again but that won't be until 2014. The Great Barrier Reef is on our agenda for next trip as well as we've never been.

It's so hard to leave a place you've come to love. I felt that with Uganda - hard to leave but on the other hand, happy to go home.

My dad is on statins too. It is a bummber when you are trying to get healthy to feel tied to pills but they are helpful. I am a vegetarian and find that it helps me quite a bit with my cholesterol. I didn't just drop meat all at once, I phased it out. That may help you. Please understand I am not recommending you stop the statins but it could help you get off of them sooner.

Hi all,

Nothing really new to report. Yesterday I played golf with my 9 hole group and really enjoyed it. That's one reason it will be hard to leave here- just really getting to know people . But that was the good news, then I just got into snacking later in the day. Nothing terrible but these little bits add up. I should just not have nuts in the house, or just have plain almonds. Anyway... Meals were fine- cheerios w lf milk, lunch out with my husband was vietnamese minced chicken with lots of yummy herbs, just a little sticky rice , one scoop of ice cream ( it was a set lunch!) dinner small piece of salmon with veg. small potato and an orange But then too many smoked almonds & 2 glasses of wine, and then small bag of chocolate candy - seriously what was I thinking?! I know not thinking.

We are still stressed out because HR still hasn't given my husband the paperwork for his job so that we know the details of our departure date, etc... Have to be patient they say...

Today getting my nails done soon. Will get to the gym later in the afternoon which is a good time of day as I will probably be the only person there. Have been doing 20 min treadmill, 10-15 on elliptical and 10 min with weights and stretching in between.

Going to try to be thoughtful about my eating today- will have a salad for lunch and still in planning stage for dinner, but going to limit my snacks to carrots, an apple and yogurt.

RYC: I looked up some facts just to be sure I was going to give you things straight. A CT scan of the heart is actually less invasive than some of the other tests. I can tell you from what I have seen in medical testing situations that if there was anything really life-threatening and volatile, they would have had you stay at the hospital. A few years ago my dad went in for a stress test and they found some issues and it is pretty standard to call the doc immediately and get an order to keep you there or have you come right back. My dad was told to get back to the hospital immediately and they had him on a monitor and in surgery the next day. That is when your regular doctor isn't doing the test. From what you said, and not knowing any of your background, it is my opinion that it was your doc doing the test and he probably didn't see anything huge, if he did see anything and just wants the extra day or two to recheck his data by looking at the slides again and chart the workup properly. That is pretty standard. Insurance companies don't like to pay for anything they don't have to and they will kick things back over and over until it is done properly. It is pretty amazing how much they can see with these tests. They are 1mm slices of the heart moving upward which gives them a full view of any plaque or other issues. As I said before. It is standard to do a quick once through during and right after the test to be sure there is nothing of immediate concern. I hope that gives you some comfort. As for the husband's job, we have been in limbo for a while here and I know that just adds to the stress. Just keep telling yourself, "Everything for a reason.":-)

Hi,

Thanks for all of the comments on my move home and thoughts on vegetarian diet. Yesterday was interesting- I have now had many tests on my heart , all to see if I have any plaque in my arteries. All interesting tests & not so well explained here prior to doing the test. Like the test where they put dye in my vein (?!) & then did a scan on my heart. And all along I'm watching my heart rate go from in the 50's to 70's, like that's not enough to make me anxious & then they ask me if I'm anxious and then give me a shot to "stabalize my heart rate". Ok again, what the heck is going on, is this normal or what? No good explanation. But I did survive and next week I'll get the results fro Dr. Koo who is very good at explaining in lay person's terms.

Otherwise , not as good on the eating- as yesterday I had to fast for the tests & then ate a snack & then a large salad for dinner before seeing a show with a friend.( and a couple of glasses of wine but those were necessary after those bloody tests) Today cheerios, my breakfast of choice recently, and then a mushroom & mozzarella sandwich at Starbuck's.  Will have a healthier dinner- maybe fish & some steamed vegetables.

Now going to the gym after reading some posts.

Progress as of today: 18 lbs lost so far, only 13 lbs to go!

If you tell me the name of the test, I can tell you just about anything you need to know. It sounds normal though. I am a nurse and have worked quite a bit in cardio. I can tell you that we consider 50's below normal and anytime there is any kind of stress, it is normal for our heart rate to jump. The stress doesn't have to even be bad, just soemthing that gets us going. I have seen people who sleep with their heart rate in the 50's and as soon as they wake up, it is back in the 70's. If you are talking about cardiac catheterization, you remember quite a bit. I am used to people getting something to make them forget, an amnesic. If you are talking about a thalium stress test, the medication they give you is what makes the heart rate go up. He could have been referring to something to relax you after he was done. I hope that helps. Feel free to leave a comment or email me if you want more info but keep in mind, I wasn't there so you are just getting background theories.

My first question would be why are they doing all this? Did you present with chest pain? There's cautious and there's money-grubbing, to put it very crudely. Please, without symptoms, ask lots of questions before they actually tell you you need a catheterization (while you're on the table and they give you no choice).

Lots of people end up with unnecessary heart caths because they have good insurance. I don't think it's just because someone is in a foreign country, because it happens here too.
