Hi,

Well, maintaining at posted weight but now sure if I'll get lower while in the next few days. I've been staying with the vegetarian plan but now will start  back on  chicken & fish for dinner.

Sleep continues to be an issue for me & it does interfere with my life. This morning I was awake at 4, yesterday at 5, day before at 6. Then I'm tired during the day & nap occasionally. I've tried time released melatonin & that will work one day & then not the next. It is a pain & now I wonder If I should just take a sleep aid & be done with it. I was trying to find a cause for my tiredness but in the end I think it's just that I'm not getting enough sleep. My father had the same problem & he would be up early & go out walking before dawn. People would report seeing him out walking in the middle of the road! Please don't let that happen to me!!  I suppose I could try  the sleep study thing. I know that I'm not the only person with this problem. Any ideas?

I'm doing well with exercise. Yesterday went to the gym for an hour of aerobic exercise. Trying to do some weight exercise or aerobic exercise at least 4- 5 days a week.

Today- shopping with my granddaughter, lunch with a friend & trying to finish a rug hooking project that I put on hold 2 years ago.

Hope all is well with my DD friends.

Progress as of today: 18 lbs lost so far, only 13 lbs to go!

grannyannie on 08/24/2012:
Hope you can get some good sleep soon. It does affect you a lot. Well done at the gym! Have a good weekend.

thenewMLE on 08/24/2012:
If you find the treasured answer for the sleep problem PLEASE let me know! I had suffered with it for 3 or 4 years and then it suddenly stopped when I cut the sugar and white flour out of my diet. I have slept all night since January, and then last week, it's back again. I was up last night at 2, 3, 4 and 5. I finally hit a deep sleep when the alarm went off at 5:30. So I am tired today. They say you burn more calories when you sleep longer periods, but I thought I figured it out, but now I'm fighting it again. My dad always was an early riser too. Have you removed caffeine from evening time? Just the first of many suggestions. Hope you get some rest this weekend!

liza36 on 08/24/2012:
Sleep seems to be an issue for so many people. You may want to look at things like caffeine intake during the day, and cut it off early afternoon so it doesn't affect sleeping later. Check your environment - like a cool, dark room, no lights/TV that would interfere with sleeping. When I've had issues, I would take tylenol or advil PM that has a sleep aid, and that seemed to work to get a good nights rest. You could try prescription meds like Ambien, but I've heard of stories of strange behavior while on that medication (my sister, for one. She no longer takes it). If all else fails, you may want to consult a doctor.

Have a good weekend, and hopefully you can get some quality rest.

biscottibody59 on 08/24/2012:
Ha! I'm your sleep person--CPAP therapy is my ONLY sleep drug and my constant companion (at least for the about one-third of my life spent sleeping). Everyone deserves a GREAT night's sleep and if you're not getting it, first I feel for ya' :: second you need to tell your dr and go from there. (Though most drs need a 2x4 up the side of the head because they don't really think women suffer from sleep disorders.)

Good Luck!

ps I bumped this entry on the forum:

http://www.dietdiaries.com/forum-readmessage.cfm?messageID=5393&category=General%20Discussion&categoryID=2014

Maybe print it out and take it to your dr?

Maria7 on 08/24/2012:
Hope you got your rug project finished. Sounds like some fun time with granddaughter. :-) Sounds like a nice, busy day, with lunch out with friend, too. :-D

V on 08/24/2012:
I was going to say ask Biscotti but she beat me to it..I hope you can resolve your issues because you def need uninterrupted sleep.. I would def see what the dr. has to say..I hope you have a great weekend my friend <3

biscottibody59 on 08/25/2012:
Good going getting back to posted wt BTW--woo-hoo!

RYC: You might not know--most people who have sleep apnea don't know when it wakes them up, and it can happen many times over an hour or night--actually waking someone up, but more likely just mildly arousing them from sleep while they catch their breath completely unconsciously. You'd think you'd realize it, but it's one of those things.

I had a certain kind of wake-up every night (for a number of years actually) and it sort of disturbed me, but over time I just began to chalk it up to stress and aging--I was only in my mid-40s when I first started to notice it--yikes! (I don't have a trace of it now with CPAP.) A bunch of other things piled on with perimenopause--heart arrhythmias while awake and it turns out while asleep as well. We adapt as humans so easily it seems.

I would suggest that you sort of casually ask your husband or perhaps one of your older grandchildren (when they're around) to hang around while you're napping or for your husband to kind of pay attention to your sleep. (Kinda boring to watch someone sleep.) Again, if it's very mild sleep apnea, you or your husband may have just gotten used to it when it happens.

I hope you figure it out--keep me posted if I can help:-)

ps I'm admittedly a little passionate about this particular subject.

biscottibody59 on 08/26/2012:
I don't mean to take up any more space here on your diary, but I thought of one other thing--it has to do with singing. There haven't been any studies that I could find, but there has been some research on didgeridoo playing re: sleep apnea.

I remember you were in a choir (when you were overseas) and maybe the break from that has changed your throat muscles enough to make a difference now. Just a thought.

At any rate, below is a web addy for a piece by Dr Park (sleep specialist). I've listened to several of his podcasts in the last couple of years. He also interviewed a person who has a program of exercises to strengthen the throat muscles. Who knew?

Thought I'd share:-)

ps here's a paragraph from wikipedia on didgeridoo/sleep apnea:

Hi-

Big day- one lb down! This mostly vegetarian diet is working.

For the last week I've been having cereal for breakfast & salads for lunch & dinner & about 4 fruits. That has been my version of the Eat to Live diet. I have had a little meat, maybe 2 oz of steak yesterday & a few bites of steak one other day.The main thing is that I've  been satisfied - the salads have filled me up & the fruit satisfies my sweet tooth. Oh, also had some wine most days.

Today my husband leaves & then 9 days more for me. This is when I get a bit frantic wondering what I may have forgotten to do - like order an oil delivery which almost got by me. And right now it looks like we won't be back until next spring or summer.

Wed I will go to NJ to visit my daughter & grandchildren & my new granddog! Can't wait to see the new little puppy.

Now I can actually picture getting below 170 & that is something to work for. So the next 8 days will be easy to follow this vegetarian diet. Maybe I can get the scale to move down another lb.

Progress as of today: 18 lbs lost so far, only 13 lbs to go!

grannyannie on 08/20/2012:
Congrats on the pound! We don't eat much meat at home either. Usually have it when we are eating out.

You'll get below 170 before you know it!

Congrats to you! :-)

Hi-

It always surprises me when I can change my habits. Yesterday I had two big salads, one I made so was completely vegetarian, the other was at a restaurant & not completely vegetarian. No sweets, carbs were just fruit & vegetables. And I felt satisfied and not deprived. It may be that I'm thinking I'll do this short term. In the long term I'm planning to limit my meat portions and  eat more vegetables and fruits. Stay tuned...Hoping to keep with that idea. Just now a 1/2 lb from posted weight .

Now in my counting down phase of being home & making my list of what I need to do & schedule to be able to leave the house in good order.

Was going to go to the gym but changed my plan to go for a long walk on this beautiful and now cool day.

Hope everyone has a sparkling day!

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 14 lbs to go!

liza36 on 08/16/2012:
It does amaze me sometimes too that the body responds so well to changes like that. Keep that up ant the 1/2 pound will be gone forever.

supercheese on 08/16/2012:
i agree with liza!

grannyannie on 08/16/2012:
You're eating well. How long until you leave?

RYC I'm happy with the diet I have now (for life) it's just the handful of nuts here and a couple of oatcakes there, and eating out that has stopped me from losing the rest of the vacay weight.

biscottibody59 on 08/16/2012:
Good for you!

V on 08/16/2012:

TheMother on 08/17/2012:
I like that comment - have a nice "sparkling" day. So far my day is sparkling very nicely. Hope yours is too. Have a good weekend.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 08/18/2012:
good plans. but in general, i think meats are important, or, more importantly, proteins are important. I try to get protein at every meal, whether it be naturally like through milk, yogurt, tofu, eggs, chicken, fish...or unnaturally haha like protein shakes and bars. either way, protein fills me up for longer, so i highly recommend keeping it in your diet. veggies are also very important, like you say. many days, i eat much more than the 3-5 recommeneded veggie servings.

biscottibody59 on 08/18/2012:
Hey there! Fuhrman is featured in two films that were available to watch for free on hulu.com--last time I checked. One is "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" and the other is "Chowdown." The latter is a little more comprehensive following several people going plant-based. I've seen both. Also another plant-based diet film is "Forks Over Knives." I recommend all three to anyone just for info.

Keep up the good work and enjoy your weekend!

Maria7 on 08/19/2012:
You know, there was a time years ago that I just was not into salads...but over the years, I have come to REALLY enjoy eating them...how about that???

Hi all,

I have a day to myself- or at least a good part of the day - I'll be picking up my grandchildren later this afternoon and will have them for a few hours. So started the day with an hour bike ride. I thought I was in better shape but as this is the first time I've been out on the bike, I really felt it in my knees.

To get back to posted weight- I've been up by as much as 4 lbs!- I'm adapting a mostly vegetable diet. So it's just been a few days but it is working and I should be able to get below my posted weight before I leave on the 29th. I read the Joel Furhman book, Eat to Live, and it makes so much sense. Not following it exactly but trying to eat mostly vegetables and fruit. Stay tuned- I'm very positive now and will try to continue.

Yesterday was the last of the planned days of visiting. I had people for lunch and dinner yesterday. I made panini for lunch but just had a salad and then had steak with corn and green beans and just had a very small piece of steak. So it is possible to say no and I need to practice to say no more often. Although it is easier when I'm in my own home.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 14 lbs to go!

liza36 on 08/15/2012:
It's so much easier to control your own environment so good for you for adapting even with company.

grannyannie on 08/15/2012:

Hi-

We have been visiting and having people visiting with us constantly to the point that I  am cranky about it. I am talked out about - well, everything. Turns out that I like to have some time to myself.

And guess what- with the visiting has come food and drink . I'm still sticking with my goal of leaving lighter than when I arrived. Exercise has not been as consistent because of our schedule. Did take a good walk today & then played golf.

And so it continues- I leave today for NH and the for VT visiting friends. Back on Saturday & then  the visits taper off.

Try to get on DD more next week.

Hope all is well with all of you!

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 14 lbs to go!

grannyannie on 08/08/2012:
It's tough to do well when visiting! I like lots of time to myself as well. Love company but it can get to be too much.

Yea, single track roads. Lots of people don't like them - until you get used to them.

Hi,

Sorry for not getting back here for a week

My husband is home & although good to have him, kind of upset my routine. Anyone know what I mean ? I had my daily routine going & was kind of settled into it & now have to start thinking like a couple again. It will all be fine, just my usual probelm with transition. And then it's all about the wecome home stuff that I've just been through myself. maybe I'm just done with all of this. In additon, while I'm here I can't really put down roots, just here temporarily... like I said I may be done with this, but our time isn't up yet.I started thinking, is there anything in my closets there that I would really miss The answer was no, not really.. thinking if I didn't return, no loss... Just thinking though & that's not good. My return date is Aug 29. Ok, I know I should THINK POSITIVE!!!! HA!

OK, starting with exercise- there were about 3 days that I had no exercise to speak of & I was not a happy camper. Had company, doing other stuff, but should have fit something in. Still getting to the gym for weights classes. Like real steam up your glasses  type classes- very good, And the modified plank worked well. I also tried a water aerobics class one day when I was feeling kind of stiff- I always come out of those classes feeling like I've had a massage- nice. So really enjoying the LA Fitness & hoping to find some classes back in Singapore.

Eating- not so good but still within my 2 lb weight that I've been up & down. I am seting a goal that I want to leave here weighing less than when I arrived. There- very realistic & doable.

Thank you all for your suggestions on cholesterol lowering foods. I think I will think more about what I'm eating although I pretty much follow a vegetable, fruit rich diet with little red meat. And then get my cholesterol tested again when I return & then go from there as far as medication.I did buy some red  yeast rice but don't want to start taking something until I get tested again.

Going to catch up on reading your posts.

V on 07/30/2012:
Your plan is a reasonable one and I know you will go forth and give it your all :) RYC, the food part was not an issue, it was the drinks.LOL and yes I do have my days when I overdo it in the booze department :) Have a good day <3

Umpqua on 07/30/2012:
I think you have a sensible plan in place and I understand about your routine being disrupted, I'd be in the same boat if hubby was suddenly home with me every day. RE the peach squares, here is the basic recipe - I just swapped out peaches for pears: http://www.fitfoodieforlife.com/2012/02/healthy-sugar-cookies-and-pear-spice.html#pear spice protein squares

sweetpea1977 on 08/01/2012:
ugh, I went through a huge routine change when hubby was laid off work and spent two weeks at home working on his resumes, attending interviews, etc. I was so relieved that it didnt take very long for him to get hired by a new company!

grannyannie on 08/02/2012:
I understand what you mean about upsetting your routines. Nice to have him home but it does change your schedule. My husband used to commute from London on the weekends, so had the house to myself from Sunday night to Friday night.

TheMother on 08/04/2012:
As a creature of habit and routine, I certainly can relate to having my schedule interrupted. It just throws me off for the entire day. I'm sure you'll get back to your schedule in a day or so. It's amazing how we have the ability to adapt - thank goodness. Have a GREAT weekend.

Hi,

Had a good week but no progress with weight, just keep in a 2 lb range of my posted weight.

My physical went well and even thought after that it was a waste of time, but I guess that's the good news- didn't find any problems.or rather no oher problems than high cholesterol- I need to have my cholesterol retested when i get back to singpapore. it is a little high & I may need medication but I would prefer to avoid medication if possible. Although I can't think of dietery changes- I don't eat much red meat or high fat foods, I eat a good amount of fiber & I exercise on a regular basis. Anyone have ideas?

I've been at the gym a couple of days this week and played golf yesterday & will play today.

It was my daughter's birthday this week & she had friends over so food & drinks that night. Also went out to eat a couple of times. Going to concentrate on food & calories for this week. I haven't been very good about writing down food & calories.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 14 lbs to go!

V on 07/22/2012:
Sorry that your Cholesterol level is a little high..You can totally lower this with tweaking your intake slightly.. Joy Bauer has a book out titled "Food Cures". It might be worth checking out.. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend :)

LeakingLife on 07/22/2012:
If you really want to get serious about lowering your cholesterol, read "Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease" by Caldwell B Esselstyn MD. Most of the book is recipes. The rest of the book documents unequivocal results of eating a plant-based/no-added-oil diet. I invite you to also check out the other diary I started here (ModerationKills) that refers to it and a strictly plant-based way of eating.

moogy on 07/22/2012:
Lots and lots of vegies thinkpositive:) Beleive me coming out of the doctors any feeling it was a waste of time is a good thing. That's what you want for all your life:)

grannyannie on 07/23/2012:
My cholesterol changes according to how I eat so I know mine is diet related. Has yours always been high and does it run in the family? You might want to look up cholesterol levels of what you normally eat. I know some foods lower cholesterol, like porridge. And apparently those margarines that claim to lower cholesterol really do. We use Benecol.

Umpqua on 07/23/2012:
There are some great foods that are recommended for trying to lower cholesterol. My hubby struggles with his and he got a huge list from his nutritionist at work. Let me see if I can dig it up and scan it and email it to you. Off the top of my head, flax seed is a big one (you can just sprinkle it on cereal and yogurt and incorporate it in baking, etc.) Also egg whites, oatmeal, walnuts and almonds.

RYC, I'm sure your grandkids will love Camp Jewell! My nieces went last summer and had a blast. I'm thinking I may try the boys there for day camp next summer. I'm loving this weather, we've had the AC off for days and it's a great break from the heat!

LeakingLife on 07/23/2012:
Another book you may check out is "The Pritikin Edge." It's similarly plant-based, but also allows egg whites and fish. I'm not sure if chicken is allowed. I have the book, but it's not handy at the moment.

Apparently the FDA doesn't allow the stuff that works as well as a prescription statin to be sold anymore. There's some information on the wikipedia page for "red yeast rice," though I don't know how valid it is. I don't know if you're familiar with the radio show "The People's Pharmacy," which is the first place I recall hearing about it. I'm sure their website has the latest info if you're interested.

grannyannie on 07/24/2012:
Could it be that high cholesterol runs in the family? It runs in mine and I'm the only one of 4 who doesn't have it.

LeakingLife on 07/24/2012:
You could probably get the potent "real" red yeast rice when you go back overseas. Just keep in mind that since it works just like a prescription statin you should also get your liver function tested regularly like you would with a statin.

Hi all-

I'm back from my trip to MN  and had good visits with my mother , brothers and sister plus sister-in-law and nephew and niece with her little boy. My mother is 92 and living in an assisted living , she uses a walker but still gets up out of a chair faster than anyone I know! She's very sharp and remembers lots of details and dates , so always good to talk with her and sometimes  stories come up that we hadn't heard before.

Had a couple of hour long walks with my brothers and sister. Food wise- not so good.... Sitting around with snacks and wine plus going out for Mexican and good mid western food and all good intentions somehow go out the door. But thankfully it was just 4 days.

Today went to Zumba class. Still figuring out the steps but like last time, just kept moving & mostly at least in the right direction. Also eating very light today & for the next few days to balance out the last 4 days. Unfortunately going to Dr tomorrow for a physical so weigh in won't be so great. Oh well, certainly better than my last wiegh in.

Home challenges continue- today having someone spray for carpenter ants. I vacuumed up a truck load of ant bodies so hopefully the exterminator can figure out where the nest is & zap it. Hot here today so may spend the majority of time indoors. Possiblity of playing golf late this afternoon, we'll see how hot it is & decide.

Hope all is well !

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 14 lbs to go!

grannyannie on 07/17/2012:
Glad you had a nice visit. Always good to visit family. I can certainly relate to the snacking and eating out and the results of that! Good for you going right back to Zumba. Have a great day!

Umpqua on 07/17/2012:
How nice that you got to visit with your family! We came home to ants too, hubby has to put down the barrier sprinkles outside tonight (he uses some sort of granules that really seem to get the job done). Odd though that they moved in while the house was empty and there were less crumbs than usual. I hope you have a good appointment tomorrow!

V on 07/17/2012:
Hey there, welcome back :) Good to hear you had a wonderful time with your Mom and the rest of the clan! We have a huge ant problem at work, I guess it doesn't help any that we are outdoors but our culprit was a few palm trees that were infested by them..Anyhoo I am sure your pest control guy will zap them :) Good deal resuming your Zumba classes, you'll be a pro in no time :) Have a good day <3

Glad you had a good trip! I had an ant problem once. At night I dreamed there were bugs crawling all over my face. The next morning I woke up to a whole bunch of dead ants that I must have swated off or squashed. They must have been using my face as their working route. LOL.

HI!

I know , very bad not posting for a week.

I had 2 of my granchildren here from Thurs night until Sunday afternoon & also my older grandchildren as well for much of the time. No wonder I'm still exhausted. Lots of pool time, mini golf, science museum and feeding them their favorite foods - blueberrry pancakes, hot dogs & mac & cheese. Hey why fight it- I also had fruits around which they also ate. And I was happy when I put out a plate of carrots and they all were eaten. Mostly they all have good eating habits.

So they were my execise for those days & since I've been to the LA Fitness boot camp class ( no, that's just what I call it!) , golf, a fast paced hour walk with my more fit than I friend. But just tonight after eating pretty well for the day , went to a Mexican restaurant & started with table side guacamole & chips, then salad & tortilla soup & had bites of a decadent dessert. I am really uncomfortable! Sigh.....

So no wonder I'm just maintaining my wieght!

On Friday I leave for MN to visit with my mother, brother and family and will meet my sister form CA & brother from CT at the airport & we'll all return on Monday. Looking forward to seeing my family and my mother who is 92, still very sharp & living in an assisted living. Haven't seen her for a year which is hard for me although we speak frequently. I was planning to go out yesterday but ended up changing my plan.

OK DD friends. hope all is well with you and thanks for the ideas about modifying the plank that was helpful.

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 14 lbs to go!

It's heartbreaking to see what she writes now, although it is also filled with good memories and photos and videos. This child helped bring a lot of attention for the need for bone marrow donors and stem cell transplants and research. They asked for donations to research in lieu of flowers.

Neat, a restaurant named after me. I hope it was really good and that you go back. :-)

Sounds like you've been plenty busy with good friends and grandkids. Enjoy your time with your mom and siblings!

I'm just catching up since I've been gone a few days from DD myself. Sounds like you've been busy - the good kind of busy with family.

That's so great that you and Umpqua got to meet. I think it would be so fun to have a DD reunion and get to meet all the great, supportive and terrific people here.

Enjoy your time with your family in MN.

(counting calories, exercise)
Weight: 174.0

Hi-

Not sure where the time goes , you'd think I'd have plenty of time to update here. I guess I'm just not in a good routine.

So I did read parts of the glycemic diet which was not a new concept for me but was good to review. I'm not really there yet- not ready to embrace the entire concept. I like to take some ideas from various plans. To follow the glycemic diet entirely would be quite a change for me. Went to see James Taylor which was a wonderful concert.

Life has been good, although I do miss having my husband here. He'll be here in 3 weeks. Have been busy with friends and doing things around the house & yard. Also spent some time with grandchildren and will have 2 of my grandchildren here tonight & then for the next few days. On Monday I saw James Taylor in concert which was great.

I've been to LA Fitness for exercise classes- not as often as I had hoped but now twice this week for the Bodyworks plus abs class which is alot of hand weights plus ab exercises. I just don't do squats or lunges on my own & I really flunked the plank ! But a good workout & I was able to keep up which I felt good about- except for holding the plank pose!

I have to say that I have not been good about counting calories in the last 2 weeks. I'm going back to using my little notebook and going to look at what I did last summer.

Hope everyone is well.

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 14 lbs to go!

Good to see posts from you! So excited that you got to meet Umpqua. She is a real sweetheart. Love her! :)

Way to go on the LAF classes. As for the troubling moves, the instructor should let you modify the moves. Don't go down very low in your squats and lunges and do the planks as long as you can before dropping to your knees for the rest of the time.

grannyannie on 07/05/2012:
Hang in there, you're workouts will improve. Would have liked a James Taylor concert! Must miss your hubby. Keeping busy is a good idea.

Umpqua on 07/05/2012:
Good advice from Sweetpea about modifying, you can definitely go to your knees on the plank pose and still get benefits from it. I'm sure James Taylor put on a great show!

V on 07/05/2012:
Hello there :) The girls are right about modifying plank.. Sorry that you are missing your hubby, it must be tough <3 I hope you had a good day my friend!

V on 07/05/2012:
Oh RYC it really isn't fun to be around obnoxious drunks :( LOL

moogy on 07/05/2012:
So James Taylor must of been good, you went to see him twice!! LOL Nice to spend time with the grandchildren. Good job with keeping up with the class, I am sure you hold a branch very well. After all who wants to be a plank when a branch is so much more natural?? LOL

moogy on 07/09/2012:
Hello........anyone there:) It's only meee:) Checking in with you to see how you are going. How are you going?
