Hi,

Sorry for not getting back here for a week

My husband is home & although good to have him, kind of upset my routine. Anyone know what I mean ? I had my daily routine going & was kind of settled into it & now have to start thinking like a couple again. It will all be fine, just my usual probelm with transition. And then it's all about the wecome home stuff that I've just been through myself. maybe I'm just done with all of this. In additon, while I'm here I can't really put down roots, just here temporarily... like I said I may be done with this, but our time isn't up yet.I started thinking, is there anything in my closets there that I would really miss The answer was no, not really.. thinking if I didn't return, no loss... Just thinking though & that's not good. My return date is Aug 29. Ok, I know I should THINK POSITIVE!!!! HA!

OK, starting with exercise- there were about 3 days that I had no exercise to speak of & I was not a happy camper. Had company, doing other stuff, but should have fit something in. Still getting to the gym for weights classes. Like real steam up your glasses  type classes- very good, And the modified plank worked well. I also tried a water aerobics class one day when I was feeling kind of stiff- I always come out of those classes feeling like I've had a massage- nice. So really enjoying the LA Fitness & hoping to find some classes back in Singapore.

Eating- not so good but still within my 2 lb weight that I've been up & down. I am seting a goal that I want to leave here weighing less than when I arrived. There- very realistic & doable.

Thank you all for your suggestions on cholesterol lowering foods. I think I will think more about what I'm eating although I pretty much follow a vegetable, fruit rich diet with little red meat. And then get my cholesterol tested again when I return & then go from there as far as medication.I did buy some red  yeast rice but don't want to start taking something until I get tested again.

Going to catch up on reading your posts.

I think you have a sensible plan in place and I understand about your routine being disrupted, I'd be in the same boat if hubby was suddenly home with me every day. ugh, I went through a huge routine change when hubby was laid off work and spent two weeks at home working on his resumes, attending interviews, etc. I was so relieved that it didnt take very long for him to get hired by a new company!

I understand what you mean about upsetting your routines. Nice to have him home but it does change your schedule. My husband used to commute from London on the weekends, so had the house to myself from Sunday night to Friday night.

As a creature of habit and routine, I certainly can relate to having my schedule interrupted. It just throws me off for the entire day. I'm sure you'll get back to your schedule in a day or so. It's amazing how we have the ability to adapt - thank goodness. Have a GREAT weekend.

Hi,

Had a good week but no progress with weight, just keep in a 2 lb range of my posted weight.

My physical went well and even thought after that it was a waste of time, but I guess that's the good news- didn't find any problems.or rather no oher problems than high cholesterol- I need to have my cholesterol retested when i get back to singpapore. it is a little high & I may need medication but I would prefer to avoid medication if possible. Although I can't think of dietery changes- I don't eat much red meat or high fat foods, I eat a good amount of fiber & I exercise on a regular basis. Anyone have ideas?

I've been at the gym a couple of days this week and played golf yesterday & will play today.

It was my daughter's birthday this week & she had friends over so food & drinks that night. Also went out to eat a couple of times. Going to concentrate on food & calories for this week. I haven't been very good about writing down food & calories.

Sorry that your Cholesterol level is a little high..You can totally lower this with tweaking your intake slightly.. Joy Bauer has a book out titled "Food Cures". It might be worth checking out.. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend :)

If you really want to get serious about lowering your cholesterol, read "Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease" by Caldwell B Esselstyn MD. Most of the book is recipes. The rest of the book documents unequivocal results of eating a plant-based/no-added-oil diet. I invite you to also check out the other diary I started here (ModerationKills) that refers to it and a strictly plant-based way of eating.

My cholesterol changes according to how I eat so I know mine is diet related. Has yours always been high and does it run in the family? You might want to look up cholesterol levels of what you normally eat. I know some foods lower cholesterol, like porridge. And apparently those margarines that claim to lower cholesterol really do. We use Benecol.

There are some great foods that are recommended for trying to lower cholesterol. My hubby struggles with his and he got a huge list from his nutritionist at work. Let me see if I can dig it up and scan it and email it to you. Off the top of my head, flax seed is a big one (you can just sprinkle it on cereal and yogurt and incorporate it in baking, etc.) Also egg whites, oatmeal, walnuts and almonds.

RYC, I'm sure your grandkids will love Camp Jewell! My nieces went last summer and had a blast. I'm thinking I may try the boys there for day camp next summer. I'm loving this weather, we've had the AC off for days and it's a great break from the heat!

Another book you may check out is "The Pritikin Edge." It's similarly plant-based, but also allows egg whites and fish. I'm not sure if chicken is allowed. I have the book, but it's not handy at the moment.

Apparently the FDA doesn't allow the stuff that works as well as a prescription statin to be sold anymore. There's some information on the wikipedia page for "red yeast rice," though I don't know how valid it is. I don't know if you're familiar with the radio show "The People's Pharmacy," which is the first place I recall hearing about it. I'm sure their website has the latest info if you're interested.

You could probably get the potent "real" red yeast rice when you go back overseas. Just keep in mind that since it works just like a prescription statin you should also get your liver function tested regularly like you would with a statin.

Hi all-

I'm back from my trip to MN  and had good visits with my mother , brothers and sister plus sister-in-law and nephew and niece with her little boy. My mother is 92 and living in an assisted living , she uses a walker but still gets up out of a chair faster than anyone I know! She's very sharp and remembers lots of details and dates , so always good to talk with her and sometimes  stories come up that we hadn't heard before.

Had a couple of hour long walks with my brothers and sister. Food wise- not so good.... Sitting around with snacks and wine plus going out for Mexican and good mid western food and all good intentions somehow go out the door. But thankfully it was just 4 days.

Today went to Zumba class. Still figuring out the steps but like last time, just kept moving & mostly at least in the right direction. Also eating very light today & for the next few days to balance out the last 4 days. Unfortunately going to Dr tomorrow for a physical so weigh in won't be so great. Oh well, certainly better than my last wiegh in.

Home challenges continue- today having someone spray for carpenter ants. I vacuumed up a truck load of ant bodies so hopefully the exterminator can figure out where the nest is & zap it. Hot here today so may spend the majority of time indoors. Possiblity of playing golf late this afternoon, we'll see how hot it is & decide.

How nice that you got to visit with your family! We came home to ants too, hubby has to put down the barrier sprinkles outside tonight (he uses some sort of granules that really seem to get the job done). Odd though that they moved in while the house was empty and there were less crumbs than usual. I hope you have a good appointment tomorrow!

Glad you had a good trip! I had an ant problem once. At night I dreamed there were bugs crawling all over my face. The next morning I woke up to a whole bunch of dead ants that I must have swated off or squashed. They must have been using my face as their working route. LOL.

HI!

I know , very bad not posting for a week.

I had 2 of my granchildren here from Thurs night until Sunday afternoon & also my older grandchildren as well for much of the time. No wonder I'm still exhausted. Lots of pool time, mini golf, science museum and feeding them their favorite foods - blueberrry pancakes, hot dogs & mac & cheese. Hey why fight it- I also had fruits around which they also ate. And I was happy when I put out a plate of carrots and they all were eaten. Mostly they all have good eating habits.

So they were my execise for those days & since I've been to the LA Fitness boot camp class ( no, that's just what I call it!) , golf, a fast paced hour walk with my more fit than I friend. But just tonight after eating pretty well for the day , went to a Mexican restaurant & started with table side guacamole & chips, then salad & tortilla soup & had bites of a decadent dessert. I am really uncomfortable! Sigh.....

So no wonder I'm just maintaining my wieght!

On Friday I leave for MN to visit with my mother, brother and family and will meet my sister form CA & brother from CT at the airport & we'll all return on Monday. Looking forward to seeing my family and my mother who is 92, still very sharp & living in an assisted living. Haven't seen her for a year which is hard for me although we speak frequently. I was planning to go out yesterday but ended up changing my plan.

OK DD friends. hope all is well with you and thanks for the ideas about modifying the plank that was helpful.

RYC, thank you for sharing. My friend kept hundreds of people updated with all the details through her own Facebook account and through one set up that was public. It's heartbreaking to see what she writes now, although it is also filled with good memories and photos and videos. This child helped bring a lot of attention for the need for bone marrow donors and stem cell transplants and research. They asked for donations to research in lieu of flowers.

Hi-

Not sure where the time goes , you'd think I'd have plenty of time to update here. I guess I'm just not in a good routine.

So I did read parts of the glycemic diet which was not a new concept for me but was good to review. I'm not really there yet- not ready to embrace the entire concept. I like to take some ideas from various plans. To follow the glycemic diet entirely would be quite a change for me. Went to see James Taylor which was a wonderful concert.

Life has been good, although I do miss having my husband here. He'll be here in 3 weeks. Have been busy with friends and doing things around the house & yard.Also spent some time with grandchildren and will have 2 of my grandchildren here tonight & then for the next few days. On Monday I saw James Taylor in concert which was great.

I've been to LA Fitness for exercise classes- not as often as I had hoped but now twice this week for the Bodyworks plus abs class which is alot of hand weights plus ab exercises. I just don't do squats or lunges on my own & I really flunked the plank ! But a good workout & I was able to keep up which I felt good about- except for holding the plank pose!

I have to say that I have not been good about counting calories in the last 2 weeks. I'm going back to using my little notebook and going to look at what I did last summer.

Good to see posts from you! So excited that you got to meet Umpqua. She is a real sweetheart. Love her! :)

Way to go on the LAF classes. As for the troubling moves, the instructor should let you modify the moves. Don't go down very low in your squats and lunges and do the planks as long as you can before dropping to your knees for the rest of the time.

Good advice from Sweetpea about modifying, you can definitely go to your knees on the plank pose and still get benefits from it. I'm sure James Taylor put on a great show!

Hi-

Sorry for the long  absence- I was at my daughter's house Mon & Tues & then lost internet .

It was so good to meet Umpqua yesterday. We had been talking on DD about meeting when I got back from Singapore & set the date for a walk along the river.She has been such a great support for me over the last year & so it was nice to meet her in person. She is interesting and interested- a good listener and just a sweet and beautiful person.

And seriously aren't we just blessed to have such a wonderful supportive network of DD friends??

As far as my progress? Not great but I did just have 10 oz  of Mamma Chia, Pomegranate Mint . Overpriced but it says it will give me Vitality, Energy and Strength. I just came from Whole Foods which I just love, it's like eye candy for me- just to walk through the fresh fruits and vegetables, and then over to the gelato aisle for a sample.....

OK i'm taking out my Idiot's Guide to the Glycemic Index Diet to give me some inspiration. Will report back with my plan for the summer.

You know, I am so grateful for our supportive on-line community here. It's really unique, I think. We are all lucky to be part of it. I've been very fortunate to have met a few members of this community now and absolutely agree that we have a unique and wonderful support network going here. I don't make it to Whole Foods very often but I'm due to make a trip there and to Trader Joe's. I also want to bring the boys to lunch at the market in Collinsville soon :)

HI-

Still working on the few lbs gained in travel so no loss shown here. This morning went to LA Fitness for strength training class w/ abs. It was the same instructor that I had for the last class that I took there before I left 2 years ago so that was nice. The insructor has a good routine & not so much like the boot camp type person as the regular instructor ( today's instructor was a substitute). It was kind of funny because I knew how she runs a class & when to take out the mat, etc. & I could tell that others were just used to the regular instructoe who doesn't use a mat. Then went on the elliptical for 20 min. So I felt good after exercise.

Yesterday I had 2 of my grandchildren for most of the day . I gave them the option of going to an amusement park but that was voted down so we played a quick game of mini golf ( it was hot) and then spent the rest of the day in the pool.  They are fun and I don't have to amuse them- they keep me amused with their made up games.

Doing okay with eating but had a few items yesterday with the kids that I cold have done without. And yesterday besides the mini golf :) had no exercise.

I'm working on it, my friends, but could be doing better.

So far today

B- fiber cereal w/ blueberries, L- turkey & tom on thin sandwich,Snacks, peach & mini dove ice bar ,cracker w/ pb.ar , D- planning on chicken breast & green beans .I have fruit to snack on also.

I love mini golf, I haven't played it since I was a teenager:) Fun with the grandchildren is much better for your health that workouts, it's my philosophy because it makes me feel good and I am their favourite grandparent!!:)

Hi-

On a good track- just two days- but that's ok. Had a great Zumba class today. It was a new instructor from the last time I took the class so new music and new routines but I caught on to most of them & just faked it for the rest. A little hard on my knees but I can adjust how high I step. Fun, I love Zumba! Then this afternoon 2 hours of sweaty yardwork. I'm making some progress in the yard. Hope to get some flowers for windowboxes and other containers.

Yesterday & today were good eating days. If I can get a good week of exercise and healthy eating I hope to see some results on the scale.Still logging calories on my calorie app.

It's actually a bit chilly here today but supposed to be in the upper 90's tomorrow!

Hi-

I had a good day. It certainly is easier to monitor my food when I'm on my own and started with nothing in the refrigerator & not much in the pantry.

Also signed up for LA Fitness where I used to belong. So I'm very excited about Zumba class tomorrow!

The homeowner saga continues- came home from running some errands & heard  dripping in the dining room & saw that the ceiling was stained from water leak. But was able to get a plumber out who first had to open up the ceiling & then fix the pipe. Just a pipe that had a pinhole leak & it was fortunate that I found it before the whole ceiling was saturated and the dining room floor was damaged.  These things happen..

So had a good eating day- below 1400 calories and went for a long walk early this morning. Bought some local strawberries- delicious.

Hoping for a quiet day here tomorrow now that the tree work is done and I have the pool under control and hopefully no plumbing emergencies!

Hi !

I'm back in the US. Had a really nice visit with my brotheer & sisterinlaw in Hawaii. They drove me all over & had dinner with some of their friends. Such perfect weather & you're never far from the water and a beach. people are nice and pretty laid back. So 4 full days there & then a 8 hour trip to Chicago & a 2+ hour trip home. Of course it all started with 14 hours to get to Hawaii! I just put myself in another zone & sleep, watch a movie, read & of course eat !

Now back home for the summer. Right now there are 3 guys here doing tree work & they're on the third day of trimming, removing , chipping trees, most of which were damaged in the Oct storm. So much for living in a forest.This was all supposed to be done before we returned home. Then this morning I had the pool opened. Two guys came, pulled off the cover, turned on the pump, put shock in the pool- all took about 15 minutes and probably will charge me around $300. Even though there was debris in the pool because they didn't put enough water bags around it. Off they went. So pretty much most of the day I've been working on the pool, trying to scoop out the dirt and leaves and then vacuuming it. Just saying this in case anyone thinks owning a pool is fun.

I know that once I get things organized and all of this work is done I will be fine. At least I don't have to worry about having a new roof done or a stonework project coming! That was last summer.

I did have dinner with my 12 year old granddaughter last night. Pure bliss just listening to her. Such a sweet heart and just a good person. And saw my grandson who was busy but I caught up with him later. And of course hugs for my daughter & soninlaw- a long 5 months since I last say them.

Now that I'm home I can concentrate on my food & exercise. I think this first week will mostly be doing yardwork but then I'll be walking, biking & maybe getting in a zumba class.

I got the results of my bloodwork- doesn't appear to be  a thyroid problem but I probably will need to start taking something for my cholesterol that has been creeping up over the years. So I'll see my Dr. here & see what he has to say.

I'll have some time now to catch up with everybody's posts. Hope all is well with my DD friends!

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 14 lbs to go!

Welcome back! Hey, regaring your cholestrol -- my mother in law avoided having to take it by eating a bowl of oatmeal every other day-seriously. If you need to take it you need to take it, but might be worth a shot to try it.

Glad you are home safe and sound. I remember when the children were pre-teens we had a pool at one of our married quarters (husband was in the Air Force) and I would spend most afternoons just floating around on the lilo with the vaccum lazily sucking up leaves, when life was but a dream!!! (get it get it Row Row Row your boat!! lol)
