Good afternoon-

I had overnight guests and served them what I had planned to serve myself. I didn't buy alot of extra snacks or a special dessert and it was just fine. Breakfast was fruit, cereal and eng. muffins which I will eat at some point. In the past I would have bought some high calorie muffins .

Went for a long walk yesterday before it got hot and today will spend some time on the treadmill.

Still over my posted wieght by 1/2 lb and hope to see some change by the weekend.

Addition to my post**  Family members noticed my weight loss!! That was nice to hear! 

Hi DD friends,

I'm back from MN where it was extremely hot & humid . I had a great visit with my 91 year old mother who is still sharp and active. Also had good family time with 2 brothers, my sister & my brother's  family.

As we were sitting around with an assortment of snacks we were all talking about carbs, fat & calories . We laughed at ourselves as it didn't prevent us from snacking.

All in all though I kept things in check. I didn't track my calories but mentally was estimating. With the weather I was lucky to get in one long walk. So am up by 1/2 lb which I won't post because I'm hoping to see that disappear within a day or 2.

Did have an odd episode of feeling very dizzy & had to lie flat or would vomit when I stood up. Could be an inner ear kind of thing. It happens to some of my family members. My sister has had it happen to her & she said that at the last minute she decided to pack the medication for her trip to MN. Glad she did as it did the trick for me.

Back to reality as I'm having a new roof put on my house so it will be a noisy week as they tear off the old shingles & install new ones. Hoping to have most of it done before my husband returns on the 28th.

Interesting article in the NY Times yesterday in Personal Health by jane Brody about weight loss plans. Mostly about weight creeping up over the years , the role of exercise,and people choosing the wrong foods. Pretty much things that we know .It was based on research on 120,877 people who were follwed for 12-20 years. I did like the part about there being no significant effect of having one glass of wine a day!

I'll have time later to read your entries.

Hi to all DD friends,

Good morning. Good news and bad news.

Well good news is that I got on the treadmill for 45 min yesterday. Which is good for me as I usually get either totally bored or just tired after 20-30 min. And I pushed it up a notch to burn 400 calories in that time. Used the treadmill instead of taking a walk as it was Singapore hot here yesterday.

Bad news is that I have to repost my weight up a lb which just kills me but after being down to 179 for 2 days , my weight went up. My only thought is that my exercise wasn't as good as before. Calorie wise I've been pretty good but had a day of about 1800.

So not the end of the world obviously, and I'm at my goal of 180 by this date. I'm a little worried as I'm off to visit my brother & family & mother in MN on Sat. Which means being around food & family so I have to be prepared.My mother is in an assisted living home & my brother & sister in law are in super shape so I should be fine but the history is that when I go there we have lots of snacks and wine. I can always contribute some low cal snacks. OK I solved that problem :)

Off to play golf with a friend.

It really does sound as if it is water retention, you have been so good with your exercise and food. I mean you can't put on weight if you are not putting it in your mouth. Your visit to family sounds lovely and if they are in good shape the food shouldn't be too bad and taking some really healthy snacks is a great idea. I hope that you had a good round of golf:)

Its probably just a temporary upward flux. Our bodies are in a constant battle to find homeostasis. Just keep plugging away with good food choices and exercise and you will prevail. :)

I get bored on my elliptical sometimes too, which is why I like being outside whenever possible. But sometimes that's just not possible, so to combat that boredom I try to imagine that I'm somewhere else & no matter where I'm imagining I'm at - I'm THIN & I'm feeling THIN!! When possible, I put on a concert video (just so I have something to focus on) while I still listen to my ipod & I imagine that I'm there, I'm young, I'm in shape & I'm feeling it... When that doesn't work, I sometimes imagine that I'm back in bootcamp & my DI is yelling at me to keep going. However, I still have my days where NONE of that works & I'm just me trying to "do my time". ;c)

Hi all-

 

Not a lot to report. Haven't been perfect in my eating & the scale went back up a bit & then down the next day. Water retention?? Don't know.

Spent 5 hours in the car traveling to see family yesterday which didn't leave much time for exercise & the day before I think I was just  zoning out. Today took a long walk & did some swimming. Would like to do some aqua aerobics in my pool- if anyone has any ideas i would be grateful.My goal this week is to get 45 min of exercise everyday.

Oh & to drink more water. I'm going to start loggin my water.

Glad to read that you are maintaining your weight and sitting in the car for that long wouldn't have helped. I hope that you are able to find the time to fit in your desired exercise each day. That would get the scale moving down, I am sure. Have a great week yourelf:)

Do the pool exercises and go for as many walks as you can.....if you have your laptop with you - look up aqua fitness online and see if it gives you some pool exercise ideas. Do you swim? e

I do mini laps in my pool (it's small) so I'm not sure what to say about the aqua aerobics. I know my MIL does them so I can ask her. Have a good one!

Good job on the walk & swimming. I personally am not a water person so when I'm in a pool I just hand on the the side & tread water or walk back & forth across the pool as quickly as I can. Not high tech, but when I really apply myself my legs get weary, which to me, is a good thing.

Riding in the car burns some calories--I used to count my driving in all my calculations when that was all I did that day:-)

Hi,

New weight posted today. For second day in a row 179 showed up - yeah!! It may be that I cut down on my calories by a bit . Happy about my numbers & have an incentive to keep my weight below 180. I have been at this weight but it's been a while since I've been in the 170's for any period of time.

I give myself credit for sticking with my plan and give DD and all of my supporters thanks for hanging in there with me & encouraging me!

So thank you!!  And have a wonderful weekend!

Hi all-

I'm not changing my posted weight yet but am seeing a bit of a loss but yesterday was a stange eating day. Calorie total was good - around 1300 & for the most part healthy foods but just a reminder to me that I need to eat at regular meal times.

 Just thinking- why hasn't someone come up with a healthy fast food restaurant? I know that the fast food places now have a few offerings that are more on the healthy side but it is frustrating.

When I was in Singapore I was very self conscious of being a large person in a small framed Asian country. It was unusual to see a large Asian person. Some large Indian women but I would be twice the size of the typical Asian woman. Here in the USA there are many larger than me. In fact it is scary how many large people are around- I'm including myself. How did this happen??  I know I can only change my own habits. fortunately I see that my daughters are raising their children with healthy habits. OK- off my soapbox...

Still doing yard work as my exercise yesterday & on Wed. had a good walk. Today is Zumba.

Will be eating careful and healthy and get in a good amount of exercise this week to make my goal of 180 by next Friday.

yeah, Indian women can be large, but not that common. I can imagine how jaw-dropping was to return to the US reality ... When you can really see the difference with your very eyes in both places!

I don't mean to obsess in public places, but I am amazed at how out of control we are in the U.S. Good Lord. As far as a health fast food place - I just try to find some things that "aren't too bad" healthy-wise at the different places. Like McD's yogurt parfait for a treat and their grilled chicken wraps HOLD THE SAUCE is OK. Some of the salads at different places aren't too bad with the lower fat or FF dressing choice. It's sad, though that this is what Americans accept! I am hoping the next generation will be smarter!

They are so hard to find in smaller towns...If you were not traveling so much, this would be the perfect opportunity for you to tap into uncharted territory..You know when I had lots of weight to lose, I felt a little iffy about dining out with requests to special orders to suit my needs...You would be surprised how flexible some places are with custom orders..The bigger chains are slowly catching on so that is hopeful... I am sure you will make your goal :)

I think it's really difficult to eat healthily in this country. We are surrounded by fattening, calorie-laden restaurants and foods. At Olive Garden last night the server asked if we wanted cheese on our salads, and then she came back and asked if we wanted extra cheese on our entrees! This is the norm here and I see it with friends and family whose children have been diagnosed with high cholesterol at age 10 and under. It's a huge problem (no pun intended) and I feel like all I can do is teach my own children how to be healthy. We're already facing challenges in that they see kids at preschool eating stuff and I have to tell them why I won't buy it because it has too much sugar, etc. It's tough because I don't want them reporting back to their friends "My Mom says your lunch has too much sugar....."

Sorry to ramble, you've touched a nerve here ;) I do think things are changing and that my generation is a bit more aware of how to shop and feed their families healthily since I see a lot more organic and natural choices in the supermarket - just over the past 2 years or so. I hope the trend continues!

Hi all DD friends-

Thanks to all the great comments to my last post. I do appreciate them very much!

I was able to post another pound loss which I am pleased about. So 10 pounds is a nice weight loss for me, a good start  and I know I can continue with my current eating pattern. i am eating healthy-, fruits, vegetables, mostly chicken & fish, no soda,& little sugar.Snacks are mostly fruits, greek yogurt and a daily 70 calorie ice cream cone .:) I have been having a glass of wine most nights but that seems to be okay.Calories are between 1400-1500 with an occasional day of 1700-1800.So with that i don't feel deprived & almost never hungry.

My biggest challenges are eating out & calculating the calories of the meal. Today I had a curried chicken salad on greens with bacon & avocado. I calculate it to be around 700 calories. So I'll need to find a lower calorie dinner to balance it out.Maybe a chicken burger on thin sandwich roll.

Exercise- never made that long walk yesterday . Did some house cleaning & then worked outside pruning a hedge & today spreading mulch around some garden areas. I know I'm burning calories but not getting the aerobic activity so need to add some exercise this week. Looking forward to Zumba on Friday!

You are doing great, congrats on the pound loss! I basically keep my calories in the same range when I'm trying to lose, with higher counts on the weekends or splurge days. "Red wine vin" is red wine vinegar, it's my new favorite salad dressing. I used to do balsamic but I love the red wine, especially combined with sunflower seeds on top of the salad. My hubby actually mixes the vinegar directly with the seeds and eats it as a snack instead of potato chips, it's pretty yummy and takes care of his salt cravings.

Hi-

Had a good long weekend with family & friends. Got in a long walk & 9 holes of golf. Will take advantage of beautiful weather to get a long walk in this morning. Was a little uncertain of what I would see on the scale this morning as i went over my 1500 limit on Sun & Mon but this morning it looks like I maintained or maybe lost a bit so hope to post a loss in a day or two. Tried out my new idea of trying a little bit of everything including pie & ice cream (just a sliver!) So it may actually be possible to eat like a normal person as far as variety of food and just limit the portions. Wow - a real revelation! :)  

I have my goal of getting to 180 by July 16 so will be really concentrating on portions & exercise this week. What I am really getting excited about is getting below 180. That will be significant for me.

Yes! It's amazing that you can eat mostly anything IF you eat it in moderation and exercise a bit consistently. Portion size is key, though - an dyou must work it in your overall calorie count. Just be careful that you aren't "treating" yourself to too much sugar and carbs and that you are getting plenty of fruits and vegetables and plenty of lean protein. Good job on maintaining or maybe losing a little bit over the holiday weekend.

Great job keeping things in check over the holidays! I agree it's possible to enjoy all types of foods, as long as it's in moderation. I like to look at my overall week and I'll work in a dinner out or a dessert splurge and keep things in check the other days. Have a good one!

Oh, that is a good goal of getting to 180. I still remember when I made it to 179 and how happy I was because that number had eluded my for so long. And I was happier at 179 that day than I had been in the 140s a decade before, because I earned it. I means so much. I know you can do it!

Congrats to you on your progress! Yes, portion control is very important. I didn't understand it for a long time. But now I know that those extra calories from having larger portions really add up and can hinder weight loss as well as maintenance. I believe you will easily make your goal! :-D

Hi on this wonderful, perfect summer day!

Down a pound- yeah for me. A little worried after eating lunch & dinner out yesterday, but had a grilled veg salad for lunch & lobster dinner with corn ( tried to limit the butter) and was pleased to see 181.5 on the scale for the second day in a row.

Going to the beach today & bringing some low cal snacks.

Not doing great with exercise but will make up for it this weekend.

RE the burger, I figured I was going to have a burger on the 4th at the BBQ we're going to, so I decided I didn't need 2 in one weekend. I also rationalized that I could have wine and ice cream with the salad and still have less calories than if i did the burger and tots and no wine or ice cream. So I felt like I was getting more bang for my buck if you will!

Hi-

Doing fine- sticking with 1400-1500 calories. I discovered that I may actually possess some will power. Yesterday I bought some cookies to have when a friend stopped by. So when I was shoping I tried to buy something that I liked but didn't love ( like Girl Scout thin mints might fall into this category) so I picked out a thin butter cookie. I regret not having one when I offered them to my friend. I really do not like it when goody- goody people say " oh, no i'm on a diet I couldn't possibly have a piece of that cake - or whatever.." From now on when I'm in a social situation I will have whatever is being served , although I may ask for a small piece or not eat all of it. Maybe that's just me, not expecting that everyone would agree with me there. So later I did have 2 cookies ( 120 calories for 2) and put the rest away. And I haven't even thought about them ( well not all the time anyway..)

Exercise- I'm working like a field hand on my yard. Like to exhaustion- sweating, red face, hair sticking to the back of my neck with perspiration. Not a pretty picture. Still have several projects to go today.

Have to lose a pound this week. My goal is to be at 180 by July 16 when i visit my mother in MN.

I followed the "when in Rome" advice when I visited my son in Orlando, and prmptly gained 3 pounds!It was easier than not eating his fattening foods and having an argument with him. I'm still paying the price for those indiscretions!
