I can't believe that so many people answered my diary. Thanks everyone. I don't feel so alone anymore. I had not checked the diary for a while because I guess I did'nt believe that anyone would answer. I particularly liked the advise about making "good and healthy" food choices. Maybe that's what I need to concentrate on, since nothing else has worked. It's amazing to me that I can be so accomplished in other aspects of my life, yet be so controled by food. I'm slowly discovering that it's not the food itself that controls me,but the reasons, both psychological and physical, why I WANT the food. I tried Atkins for a while and lost 12 or 15 lbs, so I know that it works for me, but I slowly went back to my old habbits. It's obvious to me now, that I dealt with my physical cravings, while ignoring my psychological need for food. So, making healthy food choices should address both of these aspects of my relationship with food. If I really ask myself, "why do you choose to eat when you are not hungry (and choose candy and junk, at that), I have to admit that there is something else driving my food urges. I am making choices to harm myself. I am making unhealthy choices that harm me both physically and psyhologically. My challenge (to myself) for the new millinium will be to explore my inner-self and try and identify why I make harmful choices. I think that I have already begun. When I crave unhealthy food, I have (on several occasions) asked myself "what inadequacey am I truely feeling?" I have been painfully surprized that the answer to this and other more introspective questions have had nothing to do with food. Muchas gracias, amigos.

If Atkins worked for you in the past, maybe give it a try where you do it for a while, and then just "eat sensibly" for a while. Back and forth between the two.
Or, give The Zone a try. It's similar to Atkins (lower carbs, higher protein) but less "severe."
It would be SOOO nice if our overeating was only a physical thing, but it never seems to work out that way. :)

I made an entry in this diary last week, but it did not show up. I must have done something wrong. At any rate, here it goes again. I need to get motivated for the New Year. I'm at my heaviest and do not feel healthy. I'm willing to take advice from anyone who wants to help. Please, no usual, "Excercise regularly and eat sensibly advice!" Just want to get started.:(

I think one of the big things (maybe the biggest!) is to find a "program" that works that is something you can live with. For example, eating only 12 carrots a day will make you lose weight, but could you stick with it for long? Probably not! :)

Hi Annie, I'm glad you're here. This is a great group of people. I, too, was at my heaviest (260), when I finally decided to do something about it. I have been on the Atkins Diet, and have lost 30 pounds since September. I am not trying to "sell" this diet to you, it's not for everyone. There are so many programs out there to help you. Only you know what is right for you. Anyone here will tell you about their "diet" if you ask. I do have to say, though, that exercise is key to any weight loss.
Good luck to you and feel free to e-mail me if you want.

Hi. It's good that you are motivated to lose weight for your health. That's my reason too. When I was younger, losing weight for me was all about vanity. Now it's a health issue. I do not want to have health problems as I get older. Have you tried writing down all the things you eat and drink? That would let you know where you can improve your food choices. I've just begun doing that myself. If my weight should go up, I can look at my food journal and see if what I ate made the difference. Has your doctor made any suggestions? I'm not on any program. I just make good food choices. I've had to wean myself away from fast food and other high fat foods. I also try to do the "halfsies" trick when I go out to eat. I just cut everything in half on my plate and take the extra half off. I also use affirmations to help keep myself on track. The ones I use now are "I respect my body" and "I make good food choices." Best wishes in your efforts to gain better health.
