DD Future - 2017
- ddwebmaster on 05-Apr-17 11:23 AM

DietDiaries.com has been around for the past 18+ years.  I've maintained it for the past 12 years.  I know that many of you have been here for a very long time and some have thousands of posts over the years.

The site hasn't been updated for a long time and usually doesn't take much to keep running in its current state.  Occasionally a larger hiccup occurs that ends up costing more time and / or money to repair.  I've gotten to a point where I no longer have a desire to invest additional time / money into the website.  There are no current plans to take down the website and hopefully it will just continue to run by itself without requiring repair.  However, if a large error occurs in the future, I'm probably not going to invest the time / money into repairing things.  I know that hearing that is disappointing, but I thought I'd make this post to explain that the future of DD is uncertain in it's current configuration.

Again, there are no current plans to discontinue DD.  However a future error could hamper its current use / configuration.  If you'd like to keep a copy of all of your prior posts, I'd suggest saving them periodically to your computer in some way.  Printing / saving them to a PDF file would be a good idea.

If you want to get a listing of all of your posts on one long page, you can copy / paste the following web address into your browser:  Change "USERNAME" to the username you'd like.  You can also change the perpage number to whatever you'd like, so you could show a smaller number per page.

I forgot to mention, there's no easy way to transfer the site operations to a different person. The site is run on a private server and runs on top of Linux / Apache / MySQL / ColdFusion. Each page was coded from scratch and doesn't come from any software package. Because of that, it would be very difficult for almost anyone to take over the site.

Bummer! Thank you for maintaining it. I know that once upon a time there were ads on the page, but IIRC they didn't generate much or there was some conflict somewhere.

The fact that you stepped up and kept it running so well for so long (after the previous owner left it/sold it to you) speaks volumes for your expertise and consistency--I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I truly appreciate the "head's up". Does your added comment above mean that you are not open to selling the site?

ddwebmaster on 08-Apr-17 11:46 AM
It's not that I'm against transferring the site, it's just that it would be extremely difficult unless someone was very fluent in all of the different pieces of software and knew how to get them correctly talking between each other. The back-end is rather complex with multiple databases and complexities that wouldn't need to be used if built from scratch today, but that was what was available 12-18 years ago.

I don't have any plans of shutting the site down, but posted this to let people know just in case something major happens. (It's been running on it's own mostly for the past couple years without a major hiccup.)

Thank you so very much for your labor of love to all of us, Webmaster. You've done a fantastic job of keeping this site running for so very long and we all appreciate it very much. Also, thank you for the address to download and save our blogs. Take care. :-)

Thanks again. :-)
