Another fast trip to the grocery store and I spoke too soon about their fly control...NOPE...still flys.  Just picked up a few small things....and right back out of there....I have had a lot of people ask me why I don't just shop once a month...and go to that Major store/stores...over an hour away............I may just have to start doing that.......I randomly glanced at the expiration date on D's favorite crackers...and it was only a month and a half away...that isn't acceptable for something like crackers. D's sisters up further north from us...have a store with a BIG sign on the fromnt that says "There is NOTHING wrong with past dated food"...LOL....kind of a little insight into what you will find there.  I don't mind eating past dated food myself...if it got that way in my own house......I really do not intend to buy it that way though.

Progress as of today: 39.2 lbs lost so far, only 68.6 lbs to go!

Maria7 on 08/18/2018:
I expect more out of grocery stores, too. It is different eating out of date food that you have stored yourself, versus buying out of date in a store. I do sometimes buy close to out of date, tho.

BearCountryGG on 08/18/2018:
It's frustrating...I'm wondering if the manufacturers are doing that just to get us to buy more often.

Donkey on 08/18/2018:
"Past-dated food" --- I take my chances. You do NOT want to know. (LOL)

BearCountryGG on 08/18/2018:
I take my chances too....but I don't buy it that way...LOL

Scale going well...pulled it out...got on...and put it back away again.

Yesterday was a shopping day....free white bread...( I don't know rather to be happy it was free...or sad that it was white bread.)...actually I haven't eaten that in many years......D looked at it...and turned the writing on the wrapper to the wall...LOL

At least the store has seemed to conquer it's dive bombing fly problem!!!

Friends give us watermelon and cucumbers from their garden.....looks like I will have to eat a vegetable....

Why aren't muffins vegetables...I had too many muffins for breakfast.....upside is...that they are gone now! ( but they were tiny)

baked beans, pasta, cheese, broccoli, cucumber, jello, diet root beer

pb and j, small ice cream

horn_of_plenty on 08/17/2018:
believe it or not, there are frozen brands that include veggies / squash in their muffins...then you also have those Vitamuffins lol

BearCountryGG on 08/17/2018:
I'm not sure I want to hear that...LOL

BearCountryGG on 08/17/2018:
Actually they did have blueberries....

Maria7 on 08/17/2018:
Wow, congratulations to you on your new much lower number! :-) Happy for you. Nice to have fresh watermelonn and cucumbers...good friends indeed.

BearCountryGG on 08/17/2018:
Yes they are...they think we need veggies too...LOL

Donkey on 08/18/2018:
What a nice new number! Enjoy the fresh produce - tastes so much better than the stuff we get in the stores in the winter.

BearCountryGG on 08/18/2018:
I love how the home grown stuff is so randomly sized and shaped...nothing like the things in the grocery store.

Well...it's laundry day....and that's an all day job....so I don't plan much on laundry days.......

Got most of the kitchen food areas sorted....just 2 small ones to do today.......need to use up some lasagna noodles...so today will be lasagna....I like oven meals...so handy on busy days.

Working on emptying the freezers too...so ground beef and sausage ( never used sausage for this before)... and cheese came out of there...plus some noodles.

Not a diet meal but small portions will make it one.

2 cups coffee

a Hormel complete thing...breakfast.........apparently eggs, bacon, potatoes......it looked disgusting but actually tasted ok....thankfully it is the only one here and glad of it...note to self....DON'T buy those.

noon = crackers, ginger ale

3:00 lasagna, blueberry muffin

Gigantic thinder storm with hail......flooding around the barn...good thing we didn't need to go out there today........I love a good thinderstorm...the ,ore lightening and thunder the better....bring it on.

Not going to need any more food tonight...still very full....lasagna sticks with me.

Progress as of today: 36.8 lbs lost so far, only 71 lbs to go!

Horn_of_plenty on 08/15/2018:
Oven meals are very tasty :)

Laundry day for me is also some time set aside...i prefer not to be so busy all day during a laundry day!

you can add veggies to your lasagna but perhaps you are happy as it is! let us know how it turns out! and portions are everything! you can have it with a side salad :) if you want!

lol, see, here go the comments on how to add veggies....hehehehe, you are right, you do get comments from the peanut gallery when you list your foods!

BearCountryGG on 08/15/2018:
Well...veggies...BLECH...LoL....D wants his lasagna like he always knew it....so no veggies other than the tomato/marinara sauce ( actually that's a fruit I guess). Yup....putting myself out there to get scared of the veggie people...LOL

BearCountryGG on 08/15/2018:
Yup...veggies need to stay in their place.....like soup...or other casseroles...or salads.....the only reason I open cans of them is because they are a quick easy side...LOL

horn_of_plenty on 08/15/2018:
yes, and the tomato sauce is def a great veggie so that is good as it is!!!!!!!!!!

BearCountryGG on 08/15/2018:

I have no comments about how to add veggies LOL, since I probably wouldn't add any right now either ;)

BearCountryGG on 08/15/2018:

Donkey on 08/16/2018:
Sounds like the weather has cooled off a little if you can run the oven? Still too warm and way too humid to bake here.

I'm with D: don't ruin a good lasagna with vegetables in it. Extra vegetables for side dishes...

BearCountryGG on 08/16/2018:
Yup...he's happy with his lasagna just the way it is...LOL.......It's always winter in this house...D keeps the AC so low I wear winter clothes year round in here...he is definitely warm blooded...and sweats if it's over 68.......man keeps a wash cloth by his chair just to wipe the sweat off his bald head...LOL

Maria7 on 08/16/2018:
Hope you are having a good day. Also plenty of laundry to do ongoing. :-)

BearCountryGG on 08/17/2018:
That's one thing...laundry never seems to be done...just like dirty dishes...LOL

Spent the morning cleaning out kitchen cabinets.........and I'm wondering if anyone uses canned or boxed foods past their date...according the the Doctors Program...they are safe as long as they aren't leaking or smell or look funny......my sister in laws say they draw the limit at 5 years past on canned goods......I've never had food poisoning...but D is picky...so I'm only leaving the things in the kitchen that haven't expired ( a couple of things from July this yr)...and I will eat the expired things.......it seems funny to me that only just a few years ago did they even start to date cans........personally I think it is to make people throw them away and buy more...just wondering what you guys do.

this morning I had

bagel with butter and peanut butter

2 boiled eggs with mayo

2 cups coffee

1 stale potato chip....just testing...LOL

pork chop

red/yellow peppers

red onion

La Croix water

I don’t buy anything that doesn’t have at least 2 years on it. I’ll use things past the date is they are ok. It’s a best by date. If you look it up online you can find actual expiration dates for canned goods.

BearCountryGG on 08/14/2018:
One of the issues living in a tiny town......everything in the store is close to or past their dates.....many of the things are best by dates.......but D is starting to gripe about it...I've decided that I will just eat everything myself that is past...and get him fresh in small quantities......my fault that I bought ahead.

Well.....what works works and what doesn't doesn't.......and I'm a junk food junky.....if I never saw another vegetable it would be too soon...sad but true.  You guys make me eat veggies...maybe not by force...but by example and by fear...LOL

I'm stuck at home today waiting for a delivery...so I thought I should make the best of it.

Woke up with a sinus infection but moving around will be the best thing for that....I've been using fabric softener and I suspect that is the culprit....need to rethink the downy.

Lots to do around here...every room needs something........so hour by hour I will report in.

5:30 - 7:30 = umpqua apple, cherry oats ( very good...impressed) and 2 cups coffee....watched the news...and a infomercial about total gym...and it made me want to take time today for the exercycle...........lots to do today around here.

7:30 to 8:30 = bath, make up, dressed, cleaned kitchen, living rm and dining area, made bed, picked up bd rm. Took some things to garage/car

8:30 - 9:30 = Reorganizing tv/computer room, changed printer ink and did some maintenance on the roomba....my hair is a continual challenge for it.......but it picks up hair super well....but mine is at least 2 feel long now...and wraps around and around the rollers.......but...it's easy to remove thankfully.

10:30 to 1:30 = lots of little odds and ends getting done........lunch was chicken breast with peppers, celery and onions....abd the last of the anniversary cake

The rest of the day will basically be dishes...and then relaxing

last meal of the day was a boiled egg and yogurt....stayed away from the pop today...and feel better for that.....

Donkey on 08/13/2018:
Hate those sinus infections!!! That's interesting that you mention Downey. I'm at the end of the bottle, and I've been debating whether to get more...

Keep working on those vegetables! It can take time to acquire the habit and love for them. One thing I found helpful to me: if I'm REALLY hungry, vegetables will sound good. If they don't, then I'm not truly hungry, just snacky or wanting to eat for other reasons.

That has helped me discern and make better decisions. Maybe it can help you.

BearCountryGG on 08/13/2018:
That is a good idea.......if I waited until I wanted vegetables...I probably wouldn't eat for a few days...LOL......when I don't eat many...I do get a day where I crave them....LOL I see where you can use white vinegar as a fabric softener....I have an aunt that used white vinegar for a hair conditioner...so I tried it once...and I smelled vinegar all day at work...LOL I'm really suspecting the downy.....my nose has been running for days....I have been putting downy in the washer, and a dryer sheet plus 4 Lamby Balls in the dryer...so maybe it is overkill.

legcramps on 08/13/2018:
I'm not the best with getting in my vegetables either. I actually gave myself a one-month challenge a while back, with the goal to eat vegetables every day! It worked for the month, but then I fell off it once the month was over. I think it's because they sometimes make me feel crappy, but then so does ice cream and I still eat that!!

BearCountryGG on 08/13/2018:
Yup...I understand completely!

horn_of_plenty on 08/13/2018:

BearCountryGG on 08/13/2018:
Doing better...staying active helps...Thanks

Maria7 on 08/13/2018:
I sometimes struggle w getting in veggies, too...it is a win-win when Hubby and I go to a buffet...I hit the salad island first and load up...but at home, not so much...like you, I love junk-food, too. Sweets mainly. But today I had fried squash and onion cooked together, so that was my veggie today, about 2 cups full. :-)

BearCountryGG on 08/13/2018:
I got mine in today too...something I guess we both have to work at.

happy-1 on 08/14/2018:
vinegar has fewer chemicals than softener. safer. kills bacteria softener covers up but you can add essential oils to a washcloth for the dryer and get the same effect. cheaper too. plus you have a more flexible supply for emergencies

happy-1 on 08/14/2018:
and you need to re-educate your palette to enjoy vegetables. i get the feeling when you eat them you aren’t working to make them delicious. why not marinate some zucchini in italian dressing, throw it in a grill pan next time you make it?

BearCountryGG on 08/15/2018:
Another good idea! I never think of things involving veggies...now meat....I do a lot of different things with that...but veggies...not so much.

And they said it wouldn't last....52 years later.....here we are.

It seems like just yesterday that we met with the minister and he tried his darndest to talk us into waiting....and I can't say I blame him.....we were 16 and 17 that day....and we had  big plans to hurry up and get on with being adults...LOL

There were so many things we didn't know...like how to write a check..( we sat down together and figured it out line by line), we had a beat up old blue chevy and eventually acquired a beat up old red pick up that we paid $300 for ( and we had to actually finance that...)...it had holes in the floor  big enough for a baby to fall through...and a weird pipe rack in the truck bed that clanged and banged every time he drove it....but I knew 2 blocks away...that he was almost home.

It's been a wild ride....and I wish I could do it all over again!!!

I think it was about 6 days ago that I stopped recording what I ate...........no recording apparently equals  something that isn't healthy at all...and that is.......living on snacky types of foods...and avoiding meals all together.  I cook nice meals for D....and just enough for him....and then leave the room.

I've wracked my brain to try to remember if I have even eaten any fruits, vegetables or meat at all......and I have....but just minimally.

I have lost weight over these days....but I feel like crap honestly.  I'm retaining fluids in my legs, having daily headaches, my nose is running, I started having muscle cramps in my thigh this morning and my stomach is complaining and my eyes are burning.

I can look back and see that I have basically been living on various types of bars ( protein, high fiber, cereal) and diet pop and gummy candy......and just in the last 2 days...ice cream...in fact I headed straight to the ice cream this morning for breakfast.....but D had eggs and toast.

I had been staying away from diet pop for a long time...but the new coke flavors in the skinny cans drew me back in.......D wouldn't drink those...so I started getting him a Michigan pop called Vernors ( ginger ale)(diet)....he used to hate having diet pop around....and he never let me forget how unhealthy it was....and now he is hooked on his 2 can a day diet Vernors.  (pop always did make me feel crummy and it's doing it again)

I absolutely knew that when I was listing my daily foods here...that I was more conscious of eating vegetables....because I knew I would hear about it if I didn't eat them....so I ate them...( some days I craved them even).  But with no filter like this...I apparently avoid them like the plague.

This weekend we celebrate our 52nd wedding anniversary....and in a week and a half we celebrate D's birthday......we always have cake on both occassions...and this year will be no different....in fact I apparently already started celebrating because there was ice cream in the house.

So since I feel so sick and crummy......I now have to reconsider posting daily food intake....I so wanted to get away from that....but I also felt better health wise then and ate a larger array of foods.

Apparently I'm not adult enough to just eat right.....UUUGGGHHH!!!

Progress as of today: 36.8 lbs lost so far, only 71 lbs to go!

Donkey on 08/11/2018:
I know Vernons! But I have not tried it. I guess I didn't realize it was ginger ale. I thought it had something to do with lemons, LOL...

I have to confess, as your diet buddy, cheerleader, and friend, that I have been surprised in the past when you have posted that you're drinking diet soda/pop, because you're one of the people I know who does suffer from the side effects of the aspertame. It doesn't affect me, but I have friends who get migraines, joint soreness, neurological reactions, tummy/bathroom problems, inflammation, etc.

I completely understand the temptation. I've substituted flavored carbonated water, but it's not the same thing as a diet Coke/Pepsi.

I think that "eating right" can be, for some (like me), that has to become an established habit, before it comes naturally. Therefore, I would say, use whatever tools you can that work for you to do this. However, maybe it wouldn't have to be even that complicated. Perhaps try something like a concerted effort to include 1 fruit and 1 vegetable in your meals. No brainer, just look at your plate and check.

Maybe something like that, so that you're not feeling chained or burdened? (((hugs)))

BearCountryGG on 08/11/2018:
You are absolutely right....pop and especially diet pop...is poison to me.....I felt crummy years ago when I drank it...and it's happening again......I had been drinking the seltzer waters.....and I think that actually led up to the pop again...because they just don't taste as good...Very good advise as always Donkey.........I had to chuckle though,.......because I don't think I have eaten a meal on a plate in days....I am such a snacky person.....and that is so unhealthy....I actually think I miss the listing...I didn't think I would....but I think I do.....it can be a pain....but I felt a lot healthier then...so that does sway me....I had been thinking of it as being restrictive...but now I see that it was healthier...and kept me on track a lot better...( even though I had plenty of goofy days.)...I did have more healthy eating days.....Thank you again!!!

Horn_of_plenty on 08/13/2018:
Yes, we'd love to hear your foods...to make you feel better, diet pop ruins my skin on my face and always makes me feel horrible too...when i do drink it...sometimes !

BearCountryGG on 08/13/2018:
I guess I would live on granola bars forever.....UGH....I'm such a junk food junky! Pop = pain for me.

Made a quick stop at the grocery store today and to begin with ...the last 3 times I've been there they have a fly problem...and it's grossing me out....but that isn't why I'm writing...I don't know if anyone has ever heard of bullet proof coffee...it is....the first thing in the morning...you make a cup of black coffee...and you add 1 T of Irish butter ( kerrygold)...and 1 T coconut oil....and it is supposed to keep you full for hours.....well..I've never made it because I haven't been able to find the Irish butter......so I get up to the cashier...and she asks me what I was going to do with that...so I told her about the Bullet Proof coffee.......and she tells me...she does that too...... she says...."every morning I have a cup of hot cocoa and I dip my buttered toast in it"....LOL....I thought the bagger was going to bust....and I just smiled.....she was totally serious.

And....this little cutie sitting on a broken tree limb......

The last couple days have been quite comtemplative for us.  And I'm writing this as a reminder to myself that every day is precious.  D turns 70 this month....and next month I turn 69....and we are reminded daily that anything could happen at any time.  He especially is not happy about this coming birthday!

If we died today...everyone would say that we had lived long lives.  My Mother in law passed at 69 and at that time......I can honestly look back and say that she seemed old to me at that time, and I was in my early 40's.  Well...now  we are there.

I can see a definate shift in my thinking....while being aware that our days are numbered.....any old age catastrophic illness or event could happen at any time and I'm very aware that if there is anything we want to do...then we need to do it now.

We had set many goals for our lives and made them happen and worked very hard at that and for that I am proud and grateful that we accomplished those things.  We are now reaping the rewards of those hard years where we worked long hours, did homework at 3 in the morning and got those degrees, raised our babies and took 8 more foster  babies into our lives, started careers and started and ran a business. We built 3 houses. We started traveling with our kids while they were still in diapers.  We have been blessed with full lives...very, very blessed.

Now is the time  that we need to wrap up some loose ends.......and just relax and enjoy what time we have left.  And that is where the shift in my thinking is coming into play.

Wonderful family and friends, peace of mind and a sense that we can kick back...and live out our lives in a way that is fun and relaxed is what we now need

Instead of counting calories...or exercising when I don't want to.....I plan to just stay busy and eat sparingly while mostly searching for the perfect bite.  I'm cooking in much smaller quantities, I'm working on NOT having so many leftovers around.  I'm working on quality, not quantity.....I'm working on happiness, not personal torture.  I'm working on downsizing and making our home as easy to take care of as possible.  I don't want to check out of this life dieting or denying myself anything that will make me personally happy.  I want to spend time with D doing the things we enjoy, eating the foods we enjoy and living the good life we worked so hard to create.

What was all of the past many years efforts for if we can't just be relaxed and happy that we can enjoy ourselves now. We have both accepted that a small serving of sumptuous, even decadent  food is a lot more enjoyable than a mountain of food that will just make us want to sit down and feel stuffed.  If we want a nice salad, we will have that...and on the other hand...if we want something truly decadent...we will also have that in small servings.

We have lived the years of schedules and lack of sleep and taking care of others....now it's our time...we earned it.  We finally made it to our golden years......and we truly want them to feel golden.

No more counting calories, no more exercising on a schedule for me....no more writing down what I eat.

I have always been a person that woke up happy every day....no matter what my day was to bring...lately...that has not always been the case...lately I have felt like life was a bit of a chore and that I was not really having much fun......and that there was no need for us to be on any kind of a schedule anymore.....We are free birds now...and we need to have some fun...before we get too old to know what fun is.

All of you have been so supportive and helpful and fun to chat with....I will continue to read about how your lives are going.....I will post occasssionally and respond to your posts too....but I just wanted you to know that I'm switching things up a bit.....and concentrating on a different way of life.

thank you for writing a wonderful post for us to read! and congrats to you and D for getting to a point in your lives where you can sit back a little bit and be thankful and appreciate of your hard-earned efforts! :) you inspire us here to also reach for happiness and goals...keep on living your happy life!

BearCountryGG on 08/05/2018:

Donkey on 08/05/2018:
YES - THIS! So well said and put! Your entry, along with what Gains replied to me on a comment I made to him (that's not too confusing, is it? LOL) -- this is changing how I'm looking at my journey as well.

I'm sorry to hear that you have found that you've been waking up feeling not so positive.

And what I REALLY **love** about this entry is how you're bringing the downsizing journey full circle, into eating and living. It doesn't have to be a whole cake, does it? No... after the third bite, it doesn't even really taste good any more. (This is advice you've given, so I know you know this - just using it to illustrate that I really *get* where you're coming from.)

I have a friend with whom I volunteer. When her father died last year, she went on a mission to downsize, declutter, and minimalize her lifestyle. Her mantra is to live in joy. So if she has an object in her house, it must meet a criteria of bringing her joy and being useful and being used. I want to ask her the next time if she has considered using this approach with food/dieting. She's had much success with WW in the past, but gained weight in the past 2 years. She's really sold me on the minimalist lifestyle. Ooo, I can't wait to talk to her about this!

It's funny how losing parents makes us think about our own presence here on earth....dealing with all of their life long collections of "things" does put a lot into perspective.....and the more we own...the more we have to take care of....eating less, owning less apparently leads to worrying less and enjoying more....I'm ready...and I'm happy that you are finding your JOY TOO!!!!

Hugs. A lot to process here. Food for thought and it is late but... a lot to think about.

(Between 1,200 and 1,500 calories a day)
Weight: 219.0

No excuses....neighbors just came by with at least 15 pounds of fresh veggies from their garden....they do keep us well supplied every summer....so kind of them......and they keep us eating what we should.

Yesterday went really well....and I can see that I'm staying within calories....but as evening wore on...I was feeling hungry...so I think I need to start going to bed earlier at night.....it's too tempting at night...and I hate to ruin a good day of eating that way...so earlier to bed for me from now on.......I'm tired of fighting that.

Progress as of today: 33.8 lbs lost so far, only 74 lbs to go!
