Yesterday's Win

It was a long workday, and I stuck with my food plan. This was a big win because on days when I'm traveling, I tend to eat poorly.    I planned ahead of time, anticipated pitfalls, and prepared an "escape route" for when temptation would hit.

Challenges

I'm still battling with a lot of negative self talk.  I am my own worst enemy.

Progress as of today: -6.3 lbs lost so far, only 20.3 lbs to go!

bearcountrygg on 01/26/2022:
Good job sticking with your food plan.

Donkey on 01/26/2022:
I agree with Bear, well done!

Traveling can be rough. Lots of sitting :-(

Horn_of_plenty on 01/26/2022:
planning is most of the battle. failing to plan is planning to fail! so good job!

Maria7 on 01/26/2022:
That is real good, that you stuck with your food plan.

nice job on your exercise for today.

Donkey on 01/25/2022:
I look forward to reading more from you! Oh I hear you on the cold weather part. "Feels like -12F" -- that's what I woke up to today. Thankfully, I too am able to exercise in my basement :-)

I've gained 20 lbs over the last 10 years, when I first found DD.  Feel like I'm losing the war.  This past year I quit my job, started a new business, and this summer I'm moving 1,000 miles away.  New beginnings?  Want to think so.  I'm using MyFitnessPal to track eating.  Today I went for an 8 mile bike ride.  Spring feels amazing.  It was a long cold winter in the NE US.

Progress as of today: -6.3 lbs lost so far, only 20.3 lbs to go!

Ok -Week 2.... last week I challenged myself only to be willing to write down my food... and move.  This week, I am going to "up the ante."  I am a sugar addict... simple truth.  Even my vitamins are gummy.   Last year, I did a 30 day cleanse of all sugar, flour, dairy and although the first two weeks were rough, I really did see a huge difference in my energy levels, sleep pattern, and emotions.  Slowly, though, those foods re-entered and took over my diet again. My challenge this week is eat 100% paleo.  If anyone is interested in learning more about this diet, here is a great link.  http://www.robbwolf.com/faq/.  I like it because it isn't low carb..  I can still eat fruit!!

Walking has been going well... I've been averaging about 4 miles each day.  It's time to up this ante, too.  Last week I only went to the gym one time.  I want to continue my walks but i must go to the gym for strength-training.  Challenge:  4 times before next Th.  Since I'm going out of town Sun-Tues., that means I need to go today, Fri, Sat, and Wed...  Yikes!

Progress as of today: 0 lbs lost so far, only 22 lbs to go!

V on 03/15/2012:
Good Luck on your challenge :) I think Cavegirl is doing the Paleo..Have a good day!

Umpqua on 03/15/2012:
Sounds good, I've been trying a few paleo recipes and they're yummy!

liza36 on 03/15/2012:
My vitamins are gummy too! I actually love them. Good luck on upping the ante with everything! You can do it.

Journaling has been a struggle these last two days... not keeping up with it as cleanly as I want.  I did walk 3 miles on Sunday and 4 yesterday.  Today, I am going to challenge myself to refrain from eating any and all refined sugar and flour.  Started the morning with eggs and a banana with a cup of coffee.

Last weekend I splurged and bought 2 boxes of Harry and David premium pears.  One box is in the refrigerator and the second box has been sitting on the counter.  I've been checking them every day and this morning they are finally ripe enough to eat!  I am so excited.  If you have never had these premium pears, they are AMAZING!

I read this interesting article... I am definitely guilty of eating some of these foods with the mentality that it's "healthy-specifically the energy bars."  Good food for thought.  http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/wellness/5-so-called-health-foods-you-should-avoid/2012/01/31/gIQA6E7vfR_story.html

Lunch on the road today... need to be clever on how I handle it.  Grab and go (sans bread) is going to be a challenge. Maybe a pear and fage with some almonds and an oz of my favorite gouda cheese

Exercise goal:  Gym (ugh!)  I hate going there... need to strength train.

Progress as of today: 0 lbs lost so far, only 22 lbs to go!

Kati on 03/13/2012:
Ahhh, you can certainly turn yourself more interested in gym. Try to know people, try to take an mp3 player with your favorite music tracks that normally give you the will to accelerate (while walking).. I have loads of musics from Les Mills programmes like RPM, BodyCombat, and they have a high BPM (beat per minute) so they give me an additional boost. It's lovely to do weight training, too! Try to make friendships there, with PT's and stuff. :) I also disliked gym at first, but today it's something I'm looking forward to attend!

Kati on 03/13/2012:
BTW the article is great... I noticed the problem with the "multi-grain" stuff :) They are not whole grain, they use colorings (carob) and misleading stickers. Although the article concludes nothing new: one has to read the label and has to read it carefully and wisely consider...

Umpqua on 03/13/2012:
Good article, I think the bottom line is to always check ingredients to make sure you're getting good clean food. It takes time but is definitely worth the effort. Those pears sound awesome!

supercheese on 03/13/2012:
pears are splurging? HA count me in!!!

I've had those pears AMAZING :P I loved this article which is why I make my own protein bars from scratch..I hope you had a wonderful day :)

Yesterday was OK - I journaled - the good, the bad, and the ugly, so that's a win.  I even went to the gym but my workout was just OK.  I tried to run intervals and made the mistake of setting my goal real high....I fell short and was disappointed.  I finished at 35 minutes/3 miles.  I did some leg work but nothing too challenging.  I ended up literally walking out in the middle of a set.  Weird.

Other things that went well.  I bought lots of fresh veggies and fruit -  even splurged on the expensive pears!  I made a huge salad and homemade dressing that should last all week.

Other things that did not go well.  I had bought these dark choc covered almonds to eat as a treat and I keep dipping into them - more than I should.  I don't want to throw them out because they were expensive, but I wish I'd never bought them!

I bought these Kashi pita chips for an evening snack and I ended up pearing them with this amazing whisky cheddar cheese (about 1 oz) and a glass of red wine.

Today, It is absolutely beautiful outside.  My goals are:  journal/walk.

Progress as of today: 0 lbs lost so far, only 22 lbs to go!

When I'm looking at fruit and vegetables, price usually comes second to my desire. This can be good and bad depending on how you look at it.

Yeah me!  I met my 2 goals yesterday.  I journaled and walked 5.5 miles with a friend.  It felt great!  I'm definitely celebrating every step.  Today's goals are similar:  journal and go to the gym. The latter is a toughie... Anyone else feel like they need to be in shape to go to the gym?  I'm so self conscious!  I know everyone's doing they're own thing but I still embarrassed.  It's too cold to walk outside today, so I have to push myself to do this.  War is waging in my mind, though.

hollybelle on 03/10/2012:
Great job on the journling and the big walk. As far as feeling like I have to be in good shape to go to he gym....nah...not anymore. I used to because I was an aerobic instructor back in thA day and now I am kind heavier. But that attitude was holding me back. AND I noticed at my gym, anyway - no one from the old days is there anymore and not everyone else is in great shape, either, so I'm over it. I hope you can learn not to feel that way, too.....

V on 03/10/2012:
Congrats!! :)

Umpqua on 03/11/2012:
Yay for meeting your goals! I think everyone feels a little self conscious when they first start exercising again but as you said, everyone is doing their own thing at the gym. Hope you have a good one!

I am always behind the camera.  On a recent trip I forgot mine and ended up in about 100 pictures taken by someone else.  Of course they were posted all over FB (and tagged). :-(  ..... the truth, staring me right in the face.  As I age, this battle gets harder and harder.  I know I am losing it... every time i start over again I am further from the finish line.  I cannot bear the thought of where this road is leading me, but changing direction seems so hard.  I absolutely hate what i look like.  I rarely exercise and every day i lie to myself and console with food.  Each morning, I wake up and the first thoughts I have are, "Why did I do that yesterday?  Today is going to be different."  I cannot join WW, JC, or buy any books/videos.  I could buy a car with the amount of money wasted on programs. I need to do this by myself / for myself... I can only htink of daily goals at this point... so here are mine.  Today I will:  log all of my food and go for a walk.

Hi Becca, good to see an entry!

Umpqua on 03/09/2012:
Good to see you back Becca! I'm reading a book about how to achieve your goals (both in health and fitness and life in general) and one of the things mentioned is "Destination Fixation." It's sort of the theory of object fixation, like if you're driving and you see an obstacle in the road and your eyes are glued to it, you're probably going to hit it. Similarly, if you focus on the road beyond the obstacle you will probably find a way to navigate around it. I think this is a great way to conquer health and fitness goals - instead of focusing on past failures and what hasn't worked for us, instead we focus only on what we want to achieve and the positive steps it will take to get us there. It's not easy, but making a habit of doing this to achieve daily goals really does work. I hope to see more entries from you!

CaveGirl on 03/09/2012:
I feel ya. I usually am taking the pictures and can't stand seeing photos of myself. It's always a shock! I can totally relate to spending on weight loss programs! Which is crazy because there are so many free resources out there - online, at swap meets, at the library, etc. I'm rooting for you!

V on 03/09/2012:

The trip is going well.  I was over by about 50 calories yesterday and 100 today.  For traveling, though, I'm happy wiht it AND best  of all, I'm continuing to journal.  HUGE!    Breakfast was a veggie omlet with no cheese with 1 quarter piece of toast and some fruit.  Lunch was an Odwalla Super Protein Bar, some beef jerky and an apple.  Dinner was 3 oz filet mignon, sweet potato (no added butter) and small salad.  I finished the night wiht some dark chocolate pieces that hit the spot.  :-)  I did walk on the treadmill at the hotel but I was bored and the equipment was cheap so I didn't last long.  I'm not staying in a safe enough area to walk around the streets alone, so I couldn't even do that. I might stream some yoga from my computer tomorrow and do that in my hotel room.  I miss my family. :-(

Last's night dinner was great.  I did make every attempt to track it all.  Since I had so many extra calories, even though I ended at 1850ish, I still banked almost 200.

Today I'm having a "hungry" day.   I did go to the gym and strength-trained upper body and abs.  Then, i topped it off with a quick 20 min eliptical workout.  I only have about 450 calories left in my budget for the day and many hours to go.  Should be interesting...

I'm heading out of town this week.  Whenever I have to travel, it's always a challenge to find a way to work out and manage my eating, in general.  I haven't weighed myself in months.... my current weight could be 10lbs above what I think it is... or it could be better/worse.  I'm hoping to gather the courage to take that first step sometime next weekend.  We'll see....
