If you will notice, yesterday was the first day in a LONG TIME that I did not have anything for dessert after dinner! I was quite satisfied after dinner, and although I *wanted* to have dessert, I knew that I was not hungry. I really do feel much better about myself when I eat less.

Today my sinus infection seems to be worse than it was yesterday. How I detest waking up with that tight feeling in my chest (from all the mucus) and having my nose all stuffy. I took medicine before driving the kids to school but it does not seem to have helped any. I usually try not to take anything for these blasted sinus infections, but this morning I knew that I needed help.

This did not stop me from making it to the gym. I was going to do a high resistance, low ramp on the crosstrainer, but after 10 minutes, I decided to switch to an interval program on a med. high resistance. It was hard to breathe deeply with the cold I have, and I didn't want to be huffing and puffing as much. I did weight training for back and chest, crunches, and then I rode the bike for 15 minutes, thus satisfying my goal of 60 minutes of cardio a day. Ideally, I would like to do cardio in the morning and then some in the evening, but right now, exercising in the evening isn't practical nor feasible.

Breakfast - 1 cup All Bran, 1 cup light vanilla soy milk

AM Snack - 1/2 oz walnuts

Lunch - big salad, including 1/2 cup chickpeas & Italian dressing, 1 med. yellow delicious apple

PM Snack - (HUGE! I know but I was hungry!) 1 cup of fat free cottage cheese; 1 grapefruit

Dinner - 1/6 Boboli whole wheat crust cheese pizza, 1/2 acorn squash (w/Smart Balance Light spread), 1 cup stewed tomatoes w/peppers & onion.

I don't know if I will have dessert tonight. I may, but won't have a chance to update until tomorrow, because my 8yr old son is about to take over the computer...

Progress as of today: 2.6 lbs lost so far, only 9.4 lbs to go!

Thanks for your comment. I took what you said and wiped down my closet with a bleach solution. I have also lined it with plastic. Being an environmentalist myself I had lots of plastic bags saved up so I just used those. Thanks for your advice!

Congratulations on no dessert. I have not been having desserts out-right, but I find myself snacking "healthy" sweet stuff alot lately and I need to cut that out. Hope your sinus situation clears up! You did good exercising thorough it, but take care of yourself. I hate medicines and especially decongestantsantihistomins because they make me nervous and shaky, but I find that a kid's decongestant works almost as well without the side effects. I usually use the orange Triaminic

that pm snack might have been huge...but still low cal! pretty good calories despite big portions. only about 240 cal!

Thanks for figuring out the calories, HoP! That's about where I like to keep my snacks. I probably needed a carb at lunch. Actually, I should have had the grapefruit for AM Snack and then just the cottage cheese for PM Snack. Those nuts will get me in trouble every time! Dang!

You can believe that sugar (sucrose, dextrose, fructose, etc) actually TURNS into fat in your body. But I believe that is wrong. It doesn't turn into fat anymore than muscle TURNS to fat, or vice versa. It may adversely affect your triglycerides (fats), but this is what I believe:

<I>Sugar adds calories which if you eat more than you need, you will gain weight. Weight gain increases your risk of getting heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or even some types of cancer. However, if you are underweight, sugar can add extra calories so that you can gain weight. If your body doesn't make enough insulin like a diabetic, then the sugar you eat increases the sugar in your blood to unhealthy levels.

The body breaks down sugar into the sugar you find in your blood (glucose). Unfortunately, there are no vitamins or minerals in sugar and so it is called an "empty" calorie. That is why it is the first food to be eliminated from a weight loss diet. By the way, it doesn't matter if the sugar is white or brown. The amount of molasses in brown sugar is so low it doesn't contribute enough of any vitamin or mineral to count on a food label.</I>

Excess calories --- whether they come from carbohydrates (which includes sugars), protein or fat --- get converted by the body to fat. That's a basic principle of metabolism. It is not a "belief" that sugar actually TURNS into fat in my body -- it is FACT, if the sugar is in excess of your daily caloric usage. Any dietician will tell you that. You may choose to believe otherwise, but then you would be wrong. (And correct, muscle does not turn to fat.)

It's the words converting and turning that I disagree with. You make it sound like the chemistry is just pat. Sugar magically turns to fat--baloney! Pure and simple. The above quote IS from a (Registered) dietician.

I think we'd agree that excess calories are STORED as fat.

I'd like to see you research an actual quote from Dr Agatston's book that says "sugar turns to fat in the human body." Thanks!

I have decided to take a break from weighing in, and limit to weighing in once a week. I have also decided to change my approach slightly, focusing on portion control this week and recommitting myself to this project. I don't want to have this kind of relationship with food.

I am glad that today is a Gym Day.

Breakfast - 1 cup high fiber cereal, 1 cup light vanilla soy milk

AM Snack - 1 med. apple, 1 cheese stick (80 cals)

Lunch - high fiber tortilla w/ 1/2 cup black beans & 1oz skim moz. cheese and 1/4 cup salsa; 1 carrot.

PM Snack - 1 cup fat free plain yogurt

Dinner - I munched on a carrot stick and a pickle while preparing supper... Boca burger on 1 slice of double fiber bread, 6-8 brussel sprouts, 1/2 sweet potato. >>>I had second helpings on the sweet potato slices, which brought my serving up to about a half of a potato. I probably could have done better with that...

I found it very helpful for me to be busy during the day to help keep my eating in check. I had an errand to do this morning so I didn't sit around all morning doing email. Then I went grocery shopping right afterwards. So when I came home for lunch, I was ready, and not eating just because of the clock or out of nervous idleness...

I drink the vanilla flavored soy milk, on recommendation from a friend who tried regular soy milk and said that vanilla is tastier. Vanilla soy milk tastes like milk w/ a nutty taste to it. I hear that the chocolate soy milk is to DIE FOR! as well as the soy nog (like egg nog around Christmas time) -- to DIE FOR. I could not find soy nog at my store, and I think I'd have a hard time controling my consumption of chocolate soy milk -- even the "light" version. YUM.

Great eating habits!!! I wish I had the power within myself to weigh once a week. I say Im going to do it, but the next day, I see myself being pulled to the scale! it's just like that commercial "you are always on my mind". and the people have the scale trailing behind them, stuck to their ankle! lol

So as I finished my last entry, dh and I had an argument last night. This morning he calls me up from work to get in a few more digs. So I emailed him and told him not to call to speak to me again.

I woke up late, feeling totally congested in my chest and sinuses. I'm gassy and constipated, thanks to last night's cashew binge. So on top of feeling crappy, I also STINK. (It's probably a good thing that hubby is at work.) I have laundry to fold, laundry to do and a TON of packing left to do.

No more wallowing in self-pity. Today is a new day and I will get things accomplished today. (I just wish I didn't stink...)


Afternoon edition: Part of my problem, I realize, is that I eat too much. Eating too much - even of healthy foods - will still result in a weight gain. My sister in law is very very thin (and very active too). I have watched her eat when they are over to visit. She does not eat much at all.

For example, if we have pizza and salad, she will have a square of pizza while I too will have a slice of pizza but also a HUGE serving of salad (sans dressing) to fill me up (or at least satisfy me). If I want to lose "those last 10lb" and be able to maintain my goal weight, I am going to have to change how I eat as much as what I eat.


Daily menu

Breakfast - 1 cup high fiber cereal, 1 cup light vanilla soy milk.

(3 cups of coffee... must get started on drinking some water!)

Lunch - open faced vegetarian sloppy joe (1/3 cup?), 1 cup (?) of raw cauliflower w/1 TBSP (level) bleu cheese dressing, 1/4 cup cooked spinach.

PM Snack - 1 grapefruit for dessert; 1/2 oz walnuts.

Dinner - Boca burger patty on 2 slices of high fiber bread, 1/2 sweet potato, brussel sprouts.

I did not do well for the remainder of the evening. I was upset at my husband and upset (angry) about an errand I have to do on Monday for my employer. I will be glad to end this business relationship soon. I finished off the cashews and the chocolate covered raisins. Not good....

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate weekends? My daughter has a playdate here, and I haven't even showered from the gym yet. So in the middle of all this packing that I'm supposed to be doing, my daughter decides to invite someone over to play. I told her not to unpack any of her toys! I will be upset if there is more packing at the end of the playdate that there was at the beginning!

Oh, and then today at the gym, not only do I get a late start, not only is the TV station not the right one (because the substitute receptionist has no idea how to set the correct channels for a Saturday morning), but then some guy I've never seen before decides to start bench pressing on the only weight bench that accomodates the hamstring curl extention thingy. ARGH!!! Well, at least he was using proper form.

Breakfast - 1 cup high fiber cereal, 1 cup light vanilla soy milk, 1/2 oz walnuts.

AM Snack - 1 grapefruit, 1/2 slice thin crust pizza (a leftover)

Lunch - 4 carrots w/2TBSP bleu cheese dressin; Leftovers - spaghetti squash, cooked spinach, vegetarian sloppy joe (1/2 cup), 1/4 oz almonds

PM Snack - ***Trying very hard not to binge!! *** 1 med apple, 1/4 oz almonds, 7 cashews, 1tsp natural peanut butter, bowl of air-popped popcorn

Darn that PMS!!!!!

Dinner - Big salad w/1oz cheese, 1/2 slice double fiber toast with Smart Balance spred

Then my husband and I had a fight about some lost papers and an envelope that has some cash in it. So things did not go well for me after that...

I ate anywhere from 1 to 2 cups of cashews last night, with about 1/2 cup of chocolate covered raisins.

Well, it could have been worse, but this is not a good thing.

Well, it's nice to see the numbers going down, but now comes the weekend, and weekends are difficult for me, regardless of how well I plan.

I actually accomplished a bit of packing yesterday. This move is a positive move. Moving closer (much closer) to my husband's job (to save fuel) and better schools for the kids. Also, since starting the South Beach Diet, I have been doing a LOT more cooking at home, and I have outgrown my kitchen. I have a food processor sitting on the floor, canned goods along my stairs, boxes of cereal on chairs in the dining room, containers in the dishwaser (being used as storage right now).

My day at the gym was good, but not great. Worked chest and back with weight training. Crosstrainer as usual. I'm kind of glad I took a break from running. Doing the crosstrainer during this chaotic time really makes my choices easier, and thus, I am able to complete my cardio goals on the machine.

Breakfast - 1 cup high fiber cereal, 1 cup light vanilla soy milk

AM snack (post-workout) - 1 med apple, 1/2 oz walnuts, 1/2 cup roasted vegetables

Lunch - big salad w/ 1/2 cup red beans, 1oz moz. cheese, Italian dressing; 1/2 cup ricotta cheese dessert (chocolate) & 1/4oz almonds.

***Fridays are very hard for me, binge-wise. Trying to satisify my desire for sweetness without straying. Hence the dessert after lunch.***

PM snack #1 - Cauliflower and 3 carrots w/2TBSP bleu cheese dressing

PM snack #2 (i.e. while preparing dinner) - 3/4 orange, 1+ oz. mozarella cheese (got carried away with the cheese, unfortunately)

Dinner - spaghetti squash w/parm cheese; cooked spinach; 1/2 whole grain spaghetti w/marinara sauce; more moz. cheese; 1/4 oz almonds

Dessert - 1/2 cup ricotta cheese dessert

So not only am I Fiber Queen but also Cheese Butt Supreme. Not so good. I tend to eat a lot of cheese if I'm weak. I bought a 2L bottle of diet Pepsi to help me through any urges to binge this weekend. Sometimes it helps me to feel full and satisfied and treated.

It has been an uneventful day thus far, with the exception of my sinuses filling up (getting a cold) and going to the gym this morning. I am starting to tell people that we are moving, and it has helped make it more of a reality for me. Also gave permission for the kids to start talking about it at school, so they will have closure as well.

Breakfast - 1 cup high fiber cereal, 1 cup light soy milk

AM snack - 1 med apple, 1/4oz almonds

Lunch - 1/2 cup vegetarian "meat" on high fiber tortilla; 3 carrots & 5 radishes w/1TBSP of stinky bleu cheese dressing; 1/4 oz almonds.

PM Snack #1 - 1 orange

PM Snack #2 - plain fat free yogurt & something else that I cannot recall right now

Dinner - red bean taco w/high fiber tortilla (that's the end of the tortillas), leftover steamed vegetables, roasted vegetables; 1/2 oz almonds.

Dessert - 1/2 cup ricotta cheese dessert (pumpkin spice flavored)

((My son turned off the computer last night before I had a chance to update my food journal... Hence the foggy recall.)

Progress as of today: 1.8 lbs lost so far, only 10.2 lbs to go!

Thanks for your comment. Actually, until a few months ago I also used to run a 12-minute mile. Hehe. So you're not alone! I also came to the exact same conclusion as you did and decided that I'm an endurance runner, not a sprinter. But then after I had built up quite a respectable distance I hurt my knee and had to take a couple of months off. Since I had lost most of my fitness and knew that I would have to work my way up all over again from a very short distance, I decided to focus on speed so that I wouldn't get too depressed by how little I could do compared to before! But maybe that's just not for me...

When i was teaching in one school, i let everyone know. however, i should have let them know earlier, because some didn't realize it was my last day and wanted to talk to me after i'd gone! lol. i know your move is a bigger event than mine, but i hope you enjoy whereever you go.

Made it to the gym and did the crosstrainer for 45 minutes. Then I did weigh training for shoulders, biceps and triceps. I didn't want to, but I didn't want to work chest/back either. And I know that I have to push myself to work the shoulders/arms. So I did. I have grocery shopping to do, and then I must really resume packing. Time is getting away from me!

Breakfast - 1 cup high fiber cereal; 1 cup light soy milk

AM Snack - 1 grapefruit; 1/2oz almonds.

Lunch - 1/2 vegetarian sandwich from Jimmy John's from yesterday; 3 carrots; numerous radishes

PM Snack - 1 cheese stick (80 cals); 1 med. apple; 1 carrot w/2 tsp of bleu cheese dressing; 1 TBSP of spinach artichoke dip

Dinner - roasted vegetables (peppers, onion, mushrooms); steamed vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, carrots); 1/2 cup vegetarian sloppy joe w/1 slice double fiber bread; 1/2 oz walnuts

(Fiber Queen reigns supreme...)

Dessert - 1/2 cup ricotta cheese dessert

Probably too much fat in today's menu but it was a happy, happy day. I never made it to packing though. Between grocery shopping and laundry and kids and husband and computer, there wasn't any time or motivation left.

Progress as of today: 1.4 lbs lost so far, only 10.6 lbs to go!

It was a busy day for me, running errands like crazy and making moving preparations. I had to wake up early to workout at the gym at 6a. I've GOT to get moving on this packing (no pun intended)...

I wanted to thank everyone who has given me positive feedback about my vegetarian choices! Lately I've been wondering if I'm doing the right thing (for me) and if I should go back to eating meat, even though I really don't want to. The encouragement given for the vegetables is wonderful :)

Pre-workout snack - 1/4 oz almonds

Lunch - 1/2 vegetarian sandwich (lots of cheese, mayo, avocado) --- why is it that restaurants think that anything vegetarian needs loads of fat to taste good? Disgusting! That's why I only ate half of it, way too much fat! Saved the rest for tomorrow or maybe never; 1 large diet Coke split with husband

PM Snack - 1 med apple, many radishes (while making dinner)

Dinner - 1/2 cup spaghetti squash w/spag. sauce; 6 brussel sprouts; 1/4 cup spinach & artichoke dip w/high fiber tortilla (8g of fiber); 3-5 slices of an orange; 1/2oz walnuts (gotta get in those omega-3's -- or is it omega-6?)

Dessert - 1/2 cup ricotta cheese dessert per SBD (this time it's chocolate)

Progress as of today: 0 lbs lost so far, only 12 lbs to go!

As long as you are getting all the nutrients you need..who cares if it comes from meat vs. veggies? I say go for it!! If you are happy and your body is happy..ROCK ON!!! Great job!

Thanks!!! I think I hang around people who have too much time on their hands if they feel that they need to spend time ridiculing my choices. I just happen to like vegetables a lot. I wouldn't be a big meat-eater even if I did eat meat! Then there are my parents who think that vegetarianism is some form of eating disorder....

Where do I even start?.... Not even you, Dear Diet Diary could stop me from what I can best describe as a food orgy last night. Yes, after I updated my diet diary and shut down the computer. I'm very disappointed in myself. I do not know why I continue to sabotage my efforts. But all there is to do today is start again... I will probably spend all of this week getting back down to my starting point. Why is the last 10lb so hard for me to get rid of? Why am I denying myself this success?

I did not make it to the gym today because the kids are home from school and we had a bunch of snow, so I figured too risky to go in early. I hope to go after my husband gets home from work. I'm all ready to go except for my gym shorts and a change of shoes. I did shovel this morning, but it was easier than I thought it would be.

**UPDATE - I won't be going to the gym today at all because my hubby came home 1.5 hours later than expected, which is ok. I went outside to shovel again and I'm only feeling "ok" anyway. I figure today is a good day to focus on getting back on track with food/water. Tomorrow will be a new day for the exercise part.

Breakfast - 1 cup high fiber cereal, 1 cup light soy milk.

Lunch - bowl of lentil soup, big salad w/italian dressing, 1 orange slice

PM snack - 3/4 cup plain fat free yogurt; 1/2 oz walnuts

Dinner - Spaghetti squash w/parmesean cheese; brussel sprouts; roasted vegetabes (onion, mushroom, peppers); 1/2 sweet potato; 1 Boca burger

Dessert - 1/2 cup ricotta cheese dessert (per SBD); 1/2 oz almonds

Looking forward to exercising at the gym tomorrow....

Progress as of today: -1.4 lbs lost so far, only 11.1 lbs to go!

Your question is an interesting one. "Why am I denying myself this success?" I found myself seemingly unabale to get back on the band wagon of good eating after a holiday season that was one of "holding my own" after recently losing 16-18 pounds. I still want to lose 12-15 more pounds. I didn't really gain much, but I sure didn't lose, either. I enjoyed alot of seasonal food that won't be around again until next holidays. I was asking myself last week the same thing - why am I denying myself the success I enjoyed so much pre-holidays? After pondering it a few days I found that I was just heading back into the good habits a little more gradually than I anticipated. I thought that on January 2, 2007 - BOOM I'd just automatically go back to the same dicipline that it took me weeks to achieve. Little by little I have gotten back to the place I was, but it's taken 2 weeks. I don't know if that is the case with you, but it's an idea. Hang in there and take it one meal at a time. The last few pounds are always going to be the hardest.

You have wonderful eating habits, by the way. I can only wish! Shoveling snow is good exercise! Way to go!

The last 10 lb is always the hardest! Diet and exercise are no longer enough. You have to work on breaking bad habits from the inside, if that makes any sense. It may take a while, but you can do it!

your dinner sounds fabulous...although I'm more of a morningstar veggie burger person than a boca burger person! I love spaghetti squash and many people on this site eat it as well! Sorry about your food orgy! You are doing great today!

Today is my rest day from the gym. If I can ever get myself motivated to start packing, I will get some activity from doing that. I am finding myself unusually hungry today. I felt my blood sugar level drop just as I was heading out the door this morning, so I grabbed some almonds to prevent me from getting sick to my stomach. I came home and feel somewhat shakey again, so I had a rather large snack. So while it was nice to see the Progress Bar moving downward, who knows what tomorrow will bring? I need to drink water today. It's hard to drink enough water on days that I don't exercise, and when it's cold outside to boot.

Thank you all for your encouragement! I wanted so desperately to start eating late last night but I knew what a PITA it would be to update my DD online to keep myself honest. So I just drank more water instead.

Breakfast - 1 cup high fiber cereal; 1 cup light vanilla soy milk; 1/4 oz almonds (out the door)

AM Snack - 1 cup red and green beans (total) sprinkled with parmesean cheese

Lunch - Big salad w/2oz cheese & balsamic vinegarette (OK'd per SBD); 1/4c. lentil soup (before I realized I shouldn't have more beans to eat); 1/4oz almonds; 1/4 oz walnuts; 1 med apple

PM Snack - 1/2 cup ricotta cheese dessert* *** Had a dessert for snack because I had made a chocolate cake and was wanting some really bad. I admit that I had about 2TBSP (maybe more) of chocolate chocolate-chip buttercream frosting -- I was weak, I couldn't resist!

Dinner - Big salad w/ 1oz cheese & Italian dressing; 1 bowl of lentil soup (to heck with only having 1/2 cup of beans per day); 1/4 oz almonds

Dessert - 1 grapefruit

We are expecting a big snow tonight into tomorrow, so hopefully I will make it to the gym in the early morning. Otherwise, I will be shoveling. I know that's exercise too, but it's just not the same.

Now I must work on my water intake for the remainder of the evening... May have decaf green tea if my throat starts to hurt (feels kind of funny right now...)

Progress as of today: -1.4 lbs lost so far, only 11.1 lbs to go!

other liquids count as water, especially herbal tea!!! Try some of that, any tea without caffeine!!! there are sooo many flavors!

thanks for the comment. I moved out once before, twice actually lol, but ended up back here when I got pregnant.I just cant take it anymore, and I know that this will be my only chance to get out for a long long time. it will probably be 6 years before I can afford to get out on my own. Im nervous but I cant live here anymore. At this point my parents take so much control with my daughter that i feel so insignifigant in her life. Thats not how it should be. Ive always said if I got a chance I would go and I think this is it...but still soo scary
