OK, Donkey did it! She got up super-duper early to get to the gym super-duper early and now she's ready for her doorbell to ring off the hook before 9a, courtesy of salespeople harassing my residence last week. (Of course I do not expect ANY solicitors THIS week.)

Actually though, it wasn't too bad, once I was awake. It is so hot and humid here in Chicago-land that exercising before the sun came out was the best thing to do. Even though the gym is air conditioned, once the sun starts beating in through the "wall of windows" they have, it becomes a real struggle to remain cool.

Now I am very tired, most of that due to poor sleeping last night. I could NOT fall asleep and then I had a hard time staying asleep. I hope to take a short nap today, possibly after lunch, because lack of sleep can cause weight gain too. But I think after doing this "early bird" routine a few days, I will adjust and sleep better overall.

I plan to do more exercising today, as I still have all my weight training to do.

EVENING UPDATE: I did not get ONE single knock on the door today >:-[ I was so tired all day long. No nap either.

Summer and I do NOT get along. I love fall! It's so hard to get motivated when it's so hot outside. The same for winter. I would still rather be too col than too hot! It doesn't help that it's so humid here in Ohio. I know it can get humid in Chicago too!

Congratulations for getting up and getting to the gym so early. Hopefully some of your early bird vibes will rub off on me and I will get up early tomorrow morning!

Good for you!

I can commiserate with you on the humidity+heat. Usually by this time in TX it's nice and dry and more than likely above 100F--not this year with all the rain we've had, so I have to work with it. Is supposed to be in the 100s next week, but it will be drier than today.

No I didn't get in the jog or anything else, but I did get some decent sleep for a change. When I started jogging a few years ago, I just made myself do it, preferably in the evening, but it was generally hot no matter what time I went. I don't mind doing exercise first thing in the morning outside, EXCEPT for jogging/running--it just doesn't serve me for some reason.

my binges on carbs are almost always on parents' food. anything sweet, cookies, you name it!, sweetened yogurts, bread, peanut butter, crackers, chocolate, candy, cereal, would be theirs. i usually replace it if i finish it. of course, i would rather not binge on their food! sometimes, i'll even binge on mine...but it usually doesn't lead to as big a catastrophe. i binged, like i usually do, because one thing had ended (performing in the orchestra and i'm relieved about that for the summer!), but also as a distraction from not having a job!!! arg!

Good for early rising and exercise. I wish I would do that. Notice I didn't say could - because I could - I just don't lately. Even early or late at night it is miserable weather here. Relief is supposed to be on the way this weekend - we'll see.

I am disappointed that I could not wake up early enough to get to the gym early (7a opening on weekends). Thankfully it was breezy outside, so the heat and humidity was bearable outside.

Exercise today: 45 minutes mowing the lawn (worked up a really good sweat!); 30 minutes upper body dumbbell routine + push-ups and crunches.

So no gym today because I'm worried about solicitors ringing my doorbell at 7am. I spoke to my next door neighbor to ask if she had had any early morning vendors come ringing her doorbell within the past 2 days. And after talking to my Daughter again, I have concluded that these are indeed salespeople coming around EARLY and ringing on my doorbell.

SO --- Donkey concludes that we must take care of this PRONTO. On Monday morning, I will get up early and go to the gym for cardio only. I should be home by the time Husband leaves for work. I will have to go in again in the afternoon if I want to do any weight training. Or I can work with dumbbells at home. Or both. We shall see.

In a way, this has been a blessing, because this is kind of the routine I want to get into once school starts. So this is forcing me to do it. Also, I will have to start getting the kids up earlier anyway, to prepare for the school time schedule of waking/sleeping. So 7a workouts weren't going to last much longer anyway.

I have to really want this, to make it work.

Addendum: While I dislike doing exercise videos at home, I think I would be open to doing a yoga DVD at home. So I will be looking to invest in a yoga DVD as a back-up plan for situations when I feel that I cannot leave the house. Someone also recommended getting a jump rope. I may invest in one of those as well, as that would work as long as the weather isn't too wicked. Perhaps I should start researching stationary bicycles for the home... Thank you all for your helpful and positive suggestions.

hi! I'm pretty sure GNC sells protein mixes. I buy my protein packets (there's so many flavors i'd rather buy single servings of all the flavors than a big container with only one flavor) at a health food store by me. It's a specialty store. Supermarkets might sell it...but health food stores are the best place to go...also vitamin stores, i guess!

If you want it without aspartame, be sure to read the labels. I have about a pound-sized package of GNC strawberry protein shake mix that says nothing about it being sugar-free. I tasted it and it was soooo sweet. I had to read the ingredients. Very much like Pedialyte--it's not listed on the front that it's got aspartame.

Well, it happened again. In spite of my efforts to get to the gym early this morning -- and I did go in early --- whoever is coming around ringing my doorbell yesterday morning did it again. (Read yesterday's entry to see where I'm coming from.)

I got back from the gym at 8:40a, and whoever it was had been here already. My Daughter (7yrs old) said that she looked out the window from upstairs and that it was one of the 2 men that was here yesterday. The vehicle was different this time. She said she waited until they were gone and then went back to bed and fell asleep. My Son (9yrs old) did not hear anything.

So --- I guess that does it for ANY morning workouts until I find out WTF this is all about. I am NOT happy about that. Who the hell rings the doorbell of a house before 9a is what I want to know? And if I catch who this is, I'm bringing the phone with me and I'm telling them that if they don't go away, I'm calling 911. After I write down their plate number.

Just a side note: My gym has daycare, but it is really for babies and toddlers. My Daughter would be fine with it, because she loves to take care of younger ones, but my Son would probably not be able to tolerate it for more than 10 minutes. My workouts are too long for them to stand it, I believe. And I'd have to pay extra for the daycare.

Note to MyJuneWedding: Back in March, when I was trying to decide which gym to sign up for, this was one of the "bones" of contention. I could sign up at the gym for $30/month (includes a membership for dh, which he never uses!) or I could go to the Fancy Gym for $120/month but that includes daycare, which at the Fancy Gym is outstanding, even for bigger kids. The drawback was that Fancy Gym has an initiation fee of either $200 or $300 (I can't remember which). So that was pretty much a no-brainer.

But now I'm having this problem. I don't know what to do!!! I have to talk this over with Husband and see what he says. I can't really workout in the afternoons/evenings. I wouldn't do it; I'm a morning exerciser. I'm new to the area, so I have no one to watch my Son (with the Asperger's, he doesn't have many friends). This is just maddening...

Well Donkey I would contact you police department to start. I don't know what it's like were you live, but I would ask about them driving through your area regarding these guys, that sounds fishy. In our city you have to have a permit to solicit door to door.... But them coming before 9 sends a big red flag to me...give them a description and both vehicle descriptions... for workouts maybe you could try a video from home or jumping rope etc which you could do at the house...

Your early morning visitors seem very suspicious. To stay home in the mornings and find out what's going on is what I would do. Meanwhile working out with a tape at home in the mornings could be a solution. If you don't have any workout tape at home and are not willing to buy them, check them at any library, they usually have plenty workout tapes for all tastes. Good luck to solve this problem with morning visitors, keep up updated. And yes, call the police right away even if you're slightly suspicious. That doesn't look normal at all.

Also check the TV guide for workout programs. As I recall they have lots of them from 6am to 9am. Denise Austin is on Lifetime Real Women or something like that every morning.

good luck with the doorbell issue...i hope it gets resolved soon! are there any activities/places where children with aspergers can go in your community? i know that on long island i knew this family whose son had asbergers and they signed him up at a place where other children with aspbergers took classes and workshops and sports. things like that

Yep, I'd call the police and request that they come over and talk to you and your kids about what happened. It may be inocuous, but it may also be someone who had second thoughts after your kids opened the door in the first place AND told them you weren't home. Incredibly scary. My anger wouldn't be contained quickly if they had been my children. It just takes so much for some things to sink in with children. So let the police talk to them. Don't take no for an answer--the coming back is a signal of brazenness don'tcha think??? Sure they may not come back, but I wouldn't take a chance. You have every reason to be defensive in my opinion!

As for going early to work out, once you get this squared away, the fact that you want to go early is your best indication that YOU CAN DO IT--I know how good I feel to get my workout in--first thing--it just paints a good feeling onto your whole day! And I think once you get there, say 3 times, you will begin to establish a habit! Don't give up on it if you know it's what you want! I hope it eventually works out for you, even if you have to switch gyms. Obviously this is something you need--working out is a mom's god-given right--RIGHT!?!

It's like this thing with my bicycle. I could kick myself for not having a bike for so long. Even if I only ride it here and there. You don't know you miss something until you realize how good you feel WITH THAT THING as opposed to WITHOUT THAT THING--does that make sense? I hope so!

ps I personally hate videos--and Denise Austin is about goofy--sorry, but I'd rather jog in place around the house (and did so, early on) for a few minutes.

Well, having the house air conditioned did nothing to curb my appetite for ice cream.:-( Am I even TRYING to lose weight?!?!

I've GOT to start getting up early to exercise before Husband goes to work. This morning I got off to a late start, both kids were already awake. So I told them to watch TV, make their beds and get dressed and I would be home around 10a. I stressed to them: DO NOT ANSWER THE DOOR FOR ANYONE!

I get home only to find out that while I was gone, some sales person did indeed come to the door (this area is notorious for getting solicitors), and some man came and rang the doorbell. Daughter went up to the window but did not answer the door. Son goes ahead, answers the door, and tells the man I am not home.

We are so fortunate that something *really bad* did not happen. I've been exercising on borrowed time, and today stops the late workouts. Either I get up early to do it, or I don't get to do it.

WOW!! GLad nothing bad happened!! My heart goes out to you! Is there no way to bring the kids with you??? Other choice, a park or someplace close by they canplay while you jog, bike, or roller blade?? Getting up early is such a challange!!! Stay strong girl!!!

Here I start another month with my weight still at the same point. Gosh, that is just so frustrating. I actually thought that my weight was going to be higher, like around 140, with all the ice cream that I've been eating. So it really surprised me when I got on the scale this morning and saw that I was "down" to where I started on Jan. 1st, 2007. Go figure....

I did my additional upper body weight training program that I am doing as part of a challenge. Then I decided to cave in and turn on the AC because it is so hot and humid out, and this was at night when things were supposed to cool off a bit. When I got home from the gym at 10a, it was already 91 degrees outside. And that doesn't take into account the humidity factor.

So why am I discussing something as mundane as AC? I'm hoping that with indoor living conditions more comfortable, that I won't be so tempted to eat so much ice cream at night!

Progress as of today: 7.5 lbs lost so far, only 11.5 lbs to go!

Thank you all for warm birthday wishes :-) That was really nice! (even though I don't like to make a big deal out of my b-day)

How am I doing so far? Well, I have one piece of birthday ice cream cake to finish. :-/ So I have not been doing so well on my diet since my birthday. My workouts have been going well though, back to doing 1 hour on the crosstrainer and weight training.

As I was doing my upper body workout, I looked at my arms and realized that they would look *so good* if I were a little leaner. Not even "skinny" but just down to say, 130lb.

TODAY I start doing extra upper body weight training, 2x a day, 3x a week. I can do the 2nd workout in my bedroom with my exercise ball and dumbbells. I am telling you this TODAY so that I will actually follow through and have to let you know that, yes, indeed, I did dumbbells today. So hold me to that!

This week promises to be hot and humid. Not very conducive to doing second cardio workouts outside. The problem is that at dusk, I'm getting into my bedtime routine and that's when it cools off outside. The ideal thing to do is to get up early and go outside for a walk, run or bike ride, before hitting the gym. But I still can't get out of bed before 7a! THAT MAKES ME SO MAD!!!

OK, I will check back in here, after I have completed my 2nd upper body weight workout.

Today is my birthday. I weighed in at 137.5. That is one pound more than what I weighed on New Year's Day. I have not made much progress at all this year, so far.

Well, to be fair to myself, I *have* made progress, but then I just go right back up in numbers again.

It's time for a change, to get going. I don't want another New Year's Day to come around and still be 136. I don't want my Diet Diary anniversary to come around and show no progress. I don't another birthday to come around... well, I'm not having any more birthdays any more!

(Just kidding --- I love my cake too much to give up having birthdays! This year, it is a low fat ice cream cake, if you can believe that!)

I survived my company: my mom and my sister and then my inlaws -- all at the same time. And not only that, but Husband wasn't home because he had unplanned overtime at work. (Which left ME alone to entertain his folks AND mine.)

I survived pizza, birthday cake and now I'm having a small glass of red wine to relax. I can't believe that I walked away from this experience and didn't feel more dysfunctional than I usually do.

I believe the reason for your success was that you knew what to expect. you went into the situation ready...possibly prepared for the worst. Because you didn't go in with unusually high hopes is why it worked out so well. It is good to be logical, which you were in this case...

I appreciate you also trying to be logical with me! I think my plan to go back to school to be a nurse is probably a good one...i've been speaking to some friends that are nurses. I am enjoying performing...well, not enjoying performing in the orchestra that i play with. It's been seven years...i can't say that all this education is a waste...it was a learning experience...where i have learned that it is ok to choose a different path. I think. ?

My weight is up again, and my motivation is down. I've decided to try something new to "mix it up" a bit, and see how it goes.

I've decided to start eating every 2 hours. It will keep my metabolism stoked and hopefully it will keep overeating away, because there's no need to overeat at one meal, because there will be a snack in 2 hours.

I decided to try this, rather than to change up my cardio. I'm pretty happy with my cardio right now, considering that I am limited by time and weather. I'm going to add a little more upper body weight training too. But after 2 days of big dinners, I've decided that something's got to change.

So we'll see how it goes!

Thanks for the advice... to answer your question... he doesn't put himself in my inbox... only the computer does... so I don't know if he has checked his email or not or stopped using the service or if he just isn't interested in me... *sigh* but I just sent him an email asking about if ppl meet up for dinner before going to the dance hall... so we will see if he responds... :-) *fingers crossed*
