This whole time I've been saying "figs" when what I've really been eating are dates.  I can't believe my mixup.   And on that note,  the scale has reflected my struggles with eating this week.  *sigh*

I'm trying to get in my bike ride before legal clinic,  but the husband keeps calling me away to assist with the snow removal.  So I'd say we got about 4 inches but it is thick,  heavy,  wet snow.  I'm soooooooo glad we invested in a heavy duty snowblower.  My shoulder and back are very grateful.

On my snowy drive home last night,  from work,  I passed a sign that one of the training institutes has in front of their business.  They use this sign, not to advertise,  but to promote positive and encouraging messages.  (It IS a school after all.)  The message they have up now really spoke to me.  I'll try to get a picture of it.   I only go this way if the weather is bad because it's longer but the roads are safer and cleaner.

Anyway,  the message on the sign had to do with change.  If there's no new change,  there's no new results.  (To paraphrase) That is what I need to do,  because what I'm doing now is not bringing the changes I want to see.

I realize I've said this before,  and I'll keep mentioning it until it sinks in and I MAKE changes.

AFTERNOON EDIT:  Legal clinic went on WAY too long.  There are a lot of changes, a lot of uncertainty.  Fortunately, not a lot of it is falling on my shoulders, but I feel bad for the lady who this is all getting dumped on.

There are 3 of us:  Cynthia, Kim (who is getting dumped on because she's the leader), and myself.  We all work full time.  Kim is divorced and has no children.  Cynthia is married and works from home.  Cynthia told me privately why she has no more time to devote to the legal clinic beyond our clinic day.

This made me stop and think, if she's so busy getting stuff done, why don't I have more time to accomplsh more?  It seems to me that I squander my time in the evenings during the week.

  • Dinner is usually at 6pm unless there is yoga.
  • I clean up after dinner.
  • Then I'll ride my bike for 30-45 mintues to destress my back and muscles from sitting all day.
  • I usually have to spend about an hour dealing with cats, whether it's cleaning up after, spending time with Sick Kitty (she gets very lonely, since she still cannot walk), or paying attention to the other 2 cats who want to kill each other.
  • Try to spend time with husband or daughter.
  • Thursday nights I have yoga, instead of the bike ride.  I'd like to start doing yoga on Monday nights, too.

But Cynthia does this:

  • Monday - cleaning
  • Tuesday - laundry
  • Wednesday - budgeting
  • Thursday - prepare stuff for church
  • Friday - finish stuff she didn't get done on Thursday.

So she gets stuff done; I spend my free time trying to be with other family members, feline or human - or exercising.

I know it's not fair to compare myself with others, but still.  Maybe this is why I always feel like my life is tearing away at the seams.

Progress as of today: 45.5 lbs lost so far, only 14 lbs to go!

OHHHH I...I find figs gritty...and I don't think I could eat more than one...but dates...now that is a different thing.....D has been eating dates lately and they aren't raising his glucose levels...

Donkey on 01/18/2020:
I am wondering if my thing with dates isn't trying to fill some nutritional deficit - you know what I mean?

bearcountrygg on 01/18/2020:
Dates have a lot of minerals in them.

Horn_of_plenty on 01/20/2020:
i just don't think it's helpful for you to compare yourself to this lady Cynthia...

and does she really budget every single Wednesday!?

i do find it cool that she does laundry during the week, instead of wasting a day on the weekend...

but i'm not sure that her week plans should be your week plans.

My first thought this morning was gratitude that it is Friday!  Then I quickly realized that, this weekend,  I will need to get up even earlier than I do during the week - BOTH days!  Saturday because of legal clinic and Sunday if I want to do Yin Yoga at the studio.  Ugh...

My time is up on the bike this morning,  so I will post an updates later,  hopefully,  when I have more time.

EVENING EDIT:  I was not so successful against the figs tonight.   Even though I knew that weigh-in is tomorrow.  What is wrong with  me????

The snow started at 316p.  It quickly started sticking to the roads.  I left at around 445.  It's still showing and blowing, and I have to be in the road early to get to clinic.  And only 2 clients who may or may not show up.   (One probably will,  but the other is doubtful. )  What a waste of my time except that I like to visit with the other 2 volunteers.

At least the work week is over.  My nerves are shot from not knowing that Associate Attorney will perform as we need him.  He's out of the office an awful lot.

Progress as of today: 49.5 lbs lost so far, only 10 lbs to go!

bearcountrygg on 01/17/2020:
Good job getting on the bike so early!

Donkey on 01/17/2020:
Thank you for the encouragement. Knowing that my daughter has to be up at 6a helps.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 01/17/2020:
you have good plans for the weekend! are you off on Monday for Martin Luther King Day?

i plan to sleep in tomorrow ;)

Donkey on 01/17/2020:
I don't get MLK Jr. Day off unfortunately. With kids off of school, and the courts closed, I imagine it will be rather quiet.

You get the extra sleep for me. It should work, if we're psychically connected ;-)

Logging in on my phone from work.  I'm all caught up and waiting for emails and phone calls so that I have something to do.

Tonight is fast-slow yoga.  I think I'm looking forward to that?  It's just easier to go home and stay home.

If I am to improve my sleep scores,  my bedtime should be 9:30pm or before.

Oh I so wanted to dive into the container of figs last night,  but I resisted.  I'm  surprised at myself,  that I didn't try to center myself mentally more,  before going back into the kitchen for water.  Rather,  I glided into the kitchen,  filled up my water bottle,  and left the kitchen to go upstairs to prepare for bed.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 01/16/2020:
I am oohhh soooo with you on when getting home wanting to stay home! the way i got myself out driving yesterday was to have a small coffee and snack before leaving work, then i bought a seltzer and sweetened it with stevia to keep me busy in my car last night up until i had dinner around 7pm. I just decided i wouldn't stop in my apt until i was done driving, instead of going up to my apt, getting stuck up there with dinner, then driving which would have wasted a LOT of time! :) Meaning, i didn't go home like into my apt first, i went straight to my garage when i got home!

I also am sleeping less and feel more tired, but, i am strangely happy that i've been more productive in the evenings this week at home.

I am contemplating rejoining a gym so i am not so lackadaisical with my workouts, which really are so careless, constantly interrupted, and lacking any real zest at home...i figure i'd do better at the gym. I do like being home, because i can get so much more done at home around the apt in the evenings, but i'm beginning to think a trip to the gym would be nice maybe once or twice a week, too. something to think about. though it's such a waste to spend $ on the gym if i KNOW i'm not going to go that much...things to think about ! and the fact that i'm more into my cooking now and using time in other ways.

bearcountrygg on 01/16/2020:
Good for you resisting those figs!!!

The worst part of overdoing it the night before is that I wake up feeling not-so-great.  But today is a new day, and I will do better.

I'm not sure why I'm behaving as though the rules don't apply to me, but this is not acceptable.

My arm feels much better but I'm not doing much with it until yoga on Thursday (oh, that's tomorrow, lol).

I signed up for the Library Yin Yoga classes offered in February and March.  I also signed up for the free Mindfulness seminar (at the library) towards the end of March, to learn more about meditation.

I have not been able to start a meditation practice on my own.  And I just cannot spend $120 at the Disaster Yoga studio, even though it's for 5 classes.  So I'll keep looking, but this seminar sounds like it could be helpful.

Although I have a busy weekend with legal clinic on Saturday, I want to take the time to revisit my list of 2020 goals.  I seem to be falling short.

I just realized that with legal clinic on Saturday, I won't be able to go to yoga :-(  So only 1 session of yoga this week!

Progress as of today: 49.5 lbs lost so far, only 10 lbs to go!

bearcountrygg on 01/15/2020:
Times flying eh? Thursday is here so fast for me too. I need to revisit my resolution list too....but then again there may be something said for taking things one step at a time...mastering that and moving to the next thing!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 01/15/2020:
I'm fully with you on being accountable. I have been overeating and finally it has caught up...as long as i quit while i'm ahead on the weekends with too much indulgence, i should be OK. but i must curb it also!

it's great to see you involved with the legal clinic, involved in the community.

Really wanted to go to yoga last night, but time wise, it just didn't work out.  The 6:15p time slot does not work well for family dinners.  While I was disappointed, I figured it was  for the best, as my right shoulder, tricep, and elbow were REALLY  sore yesterday - all day.

Turns out that it was a good thing because the instructor pasted that she did a strength training & cardio session (is that even possible in yoga?), which definitely would have hurt my arm.

I will baby my arm a little longer this week, but I WILL attend fast-slow yoga on Thursday.

EVENING EDIT:  One thing I know, I will never get to where I want to be if I keep eating like I ate today.  Something is WAY off balance.  Had 5 salted chocolate covered carmels at work.  Dove into figs and walnuts this evening.  Not good.

Progress as of today: 49.5 lbs lost so far, only 10 lbs to go!

bearcountrygg on 01/14/2020:
Hope the arm feels better soon.....it took me many months to get my shoulder back to being pain free....you don't want to make a long term problem there.

Did a little shoveling this morning, and the snow looks quite pretty covering the ground and trees, but we did not get nearly the amount of snow they predicted.  At one point last week, they said we could get 12+ inches of snow!  Everyone was anticipating 5-7 inches.  I think we got about 2.  Very easy to manage shoveling, which is good because my right shoulder is noticeably sore today.  This soreness could be due to the yoga session I did yesterday, but I'm wondering if it's because I'm not doing keto.  (Carbs cause inflammation.)  The soreness started this past week when I started adding more carbs to my diet.  Hmm...

About yesterday's yoga session AT HOME (proud of myself) using my phone app:  I'm so proud of myself that I was able to last through an hour of Hatha yoga.  I didn't do all of the challenges, but I did do all  of the poses.  Also, I was able to maintain my balance throughout most of the workout, with the slight exception of having to touch my left toe to the ground (i.e. standing on my right foot) momentarily *just* before I was cued to transition to the next position.  Oh so close!  AND I was able to do the routine at a "normal" pace rather than selecting "slow".

I am planning my yoga schedule for this week. If all goes well, I can make it to the studio 3x this week PLUS husband and I have Library Chair Yoga on Wednesday afternoon.

Pretty much feeling myself this morning.  I spoke to my son this morning, and he's starting to get sick.

We're expecting nasty weather and big snow today, so I am planning for a weekend at home.  I would like to do some reading.  Laundry.  Weights.  The yoga studio is closed today, in anticipation of bad weather, so I would like to do some on my own using the app.  I need to make that a priority, if I'm going to actually do it though.  I won't get better unless I practice more.

Thursday's yoga class (Vin-Yin or fast-slow) was a surprise because another lady showed up!  It completely changed the energy of the class.  I don't think she'll be a regular, but I've practiced with her before, I think on the Sunday morning slow class.  This lady was an inspiration to me:  older than myself, with scoliosis in her spine, and although she had not attended THIS class before, she was able to do all of the positions and keep up with the routine quite well.  (Meanwhile, there's Donkey, huffing and puffing, trying not to topple over...)  So I figure that she has been practicing yoga for a lot longer than I have, which is why I said that the more I practice, the better I will get.

I *did* manage to remember to weigh in this morning.  I confess that I was not as focused on eating less this week.  Being sick throws off my sense of taste.  Oh... I did have that one night where I kind of dipped into the sweets a bit.  Male Co-Worker is back on keto, but for myself, this is not sustainable, as I really love fruit.  My husband is trying to do Whole 30, which is very much like keto, except that you can have fruit.  I'm catching little pieces of evidence that he's not sticking to it 100%, but even if he does it 85% of the time, it will be an improvement to how he usually eats.

Isn't that kind of how it is for all of us?  If we ate properly 85% of the time, we ought to be doing alright?

I feel that I need to do an honest self-evaluation, because I do not know what else I can do to lose weight.

Progress as of today: 49.5 lbs lost so far, only 10 lbs to go!

bearcountrygg on 01/11/2020:
Glad to hear you are feeling better and that you had some company at yoga. I agree...85% makes a lot of sense.....enjoying life counts for something too!!! We shouldn't have to be a slave to any choice....as long as we lean in that direction and work on it most of the time...thankfully...we aren't robots!!! ;>)

happy-1 on 01/13/2020:
I think you will lose weight if you stick to the 80/20 rule of life. If you stop beating yourself up so much, your stress level will drop and your cortisol levels will drop... allowing your body to lose weight.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 01/13/2020:
yup, 85% of the time in the right direction would be great for most people out here indeed!

i love your idea of rededicating yourself to practicing yoga.

after all, for how long can we only want to lose weight (only goal i mean)... for myself i also need redirection that i'm sorta bored with my routine but don't wanna stop either because i like the heaviness factor of the weights that i can lift. so, i just need to add more cardio again - i think?

Head cold is hanging on!  Each day feels a little better,  although I'm back to sneezing today, it would seem.  I feel up up hard yoga tonight.

I'm beginning to think that my feelings about the hard yoga class have more to do with the teacher than the yoga.  If there were others in the class besides me,  that might help a lot.  (So it might not be the teacher after all.)

I did not do weights last night, to keep up with my 2020 goal of 2x a week, because my shoulder is hurting.  Strain or arthritis,  I'm thinking.  Yoga has shown me that I'm very tight in the shoulders.  Not a lot of flexibility there.  Perhaps I can YouTube some helpful stretches today at work.

One thing I am extremely proud of accomplishing already this year is FINALLY clearing out my pantry last night.  Threw away everything expired, put together a small bag of food that can be donated.  This was a HUGE step for me.

Progress as of today: 49 lbs lost so far, only 10.5 lbs to go!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 01/09/2020:
Great job organizing your pantry! :) Even though i organized not too long ago, my closets will need another cleaning this year LOL...makes sense i guess, to clean at LEAST once a year!

Also good job sticking to your yoga goal. One of my goals is to get up on time or just change the time i do get up in the morning - either way, lots of wasted time occurs and some of it can be eliminated :)

my mom used to or maybe still does do shoulder stretches since she had a chip of bone come off her shoulder and it was very painful...she had to do some physical therapy for it and was doing it at home, i'm not sure if she still is.

Donkey on 01/11/2020:
Yes, I've decided to do theraputic exercises at home. Wall push-ups were recommended. Also, one of the shoulder exercises I'm doing with weights isn't good for sore shoulders, so no more of that exercise for a while. (Weights over the head)

Well, I feel like 4+ years is too expired. There's expired, and then there's EXPIRED. I confess that I kept a box of unopened cereal that expires this month, and a can or 2 that has passed only a couple of months (November-ish).

I've been struggling to get over this cold or sinus infection, whatever it is.  The symptoms are manageable but the fatigue is just incredible.  I went to bed last night at 8p and still had a very hard time getting up late at 6a.

Library Yin Yoga on Monday night was wonderful!  I wish I could attend the daytime classes she offers.  In March,  I will leave work early so that I can go to her 5p session.   (Her classes tend to be irregularly scheduled. )

This really is my favorite yoga class!

If i could relate to you - i'll just say i have been sleeping TONS this winter and with it being dark in the mornings, I am also struggling to get up - AND I'M NOT SICK.

it's true to get over your cold you will need rest. Well, that's my opinion.

Hanging in there, and feeling OK about it.  My cold seems to have plateaued, so this is probably the worst it will get, which is just a little congestion, and the occassional cough.  It seems unlikely that this will develop into a serious cough or chest congestion.  I opted to watch football playoffs (of which I have zero interest in) instead of riding my bike or walking on the treadmill.  So while it wasn't a nap or sleep, it was more rest than what I would normally allow.

Yesterday, husband and I went to pick up a yoga mat someone was selling on Marketplace.  It was new and about 50% off of what Amazon charges.  Then we went to the store for some personal care items that I really needed, mainly moisterizers and hair conditioner - essential in these harsh midwest winters.  I felt quite pampered.  The new yoga mat is thinner and will help me with fast yoga.  I still plan to use my thicker mat that I have, for Yin yoga, for extra cushioning on all the floor poses.

I would like to get my hair cut today, too.  I'd like to keep it long, but I need the ends trimmed up and evened out.  I'm not quite ready to color my hair again, but at the store, I did choose a beautiful warm dark brown color for when I am ready for a change.  I'm working my way into accepting and embracing the gray.  If I were fully gray, like Bear, then that would be OK.  But I have just these spots that are gray, which, in my opinion, does not look as nice.

EDIT:  Oh I forgot to mention that Associate Attorney posted on Facebook that his daughter does NOT have cancer - she had a virus - and that she came home from the hospital last night.  And of course, now that his adult children are leaving go to back to their respective homes (California, Iowa, Ireland), he can get back to the office and actually do some work.

EVENING EDIT:   Got a lot done today:

  1. Made jellied cranberries.
  2. Baked eggplant.
  3. Did weights (triceps and back)
  4. Washed sheets and most towels.  Son's room and bathroom are back in order.
  5. Got my haircut.  It's still long and straight,  but now it's even and the dried ends are gone.  Looks much healthier.

Now I'm cuddling with Sick Kitty, and I will be in bed at 9p.

Progress as of today: 49 lbs lost so far, only 10.5 lbs to go!

bearcountrygg on 01/05/2020:
I'm glad to hear that your coworkers daughter is okay and able to come home....now he can go back to work...no more excuses.
