Looks like no nattto for me.  Can't find the actual starter. Unavailable at Amazon etc.  Someplace in Japan carries it on eBay, but don't want it that much.   Expensive.   Found some (the fermented beans) in NY.   Have to buy 4 one cup jars and pay $13 to ship, so over $50.
FedEx delivered the soy protein mix from California.
29 grams of protein a serving & 110 Cals.   A few vitamins, not much else. Fat & carb free.

Weight stable and today I'm hungrier than usual.   Will wait until 5 and have soy beans and the cooked slaw mix.   Added garlic & onion & chili powder & paprika.   No oil because there's not a decent one in the house.   Will add to Walmart pickup list.   Been bad the last few days and ate a piece of frozen cheesecake around 10PM. Two more slices left.   Summoning up the courage to toss them in the trash, but there yet.

Progress as of today: 15.2 lbs lost so far, only 8.8 lbs to go!

Horn_of_plenty on 11/17/2020:
don't toss the cheesecake! give a piece to your hubby....and save the other, no!? you will want it later! HAHA....but, i've thrown food out too, so, whatever it takes!

Jacky82020 on 11/17/2020:
He already has a chocolate cake, a peach cobbler and an apple pie. Damn that man. These are my household temptations. Him and his two hour daily workouts on top of a full time job. He needs a good spanking.

thinkpositive on 11/17/2020:
Yes, throw it away! I know the feeling - it just sits in the refrigerator calling to you. :)

Jacky82020 on 11/17/2020:
Yes! It yelled out really really loud just a few minutes ago: Eat me! Eat me!

Horn_of_plenty on 11/17/2020:
oh gosh, SO MANY TEMPTATIONS! I'd be dying!

grannyannie on 11/18/2020:
Garlic, onion and chili powder will definitely give that flavour!

Very curious about this "super food" natto.  Can't see paying $50 for 50 cents worth of ingredients. Looks like it can be made in a yogurt cooker.   Some say it tastes like cheese and I never met a cheese I didn't like. Will probably order the culture and this yogurt maker tomorrow.

This is natto, fermented soy beans. You add a bacterial culture and keep at 115 degrees for a 24 hours.   They say it's an acquired taste that tastes and smells horrible.   I tried to cut and paste a description here, but failed.   Very expensive online, has to ship in chilled containers.   I'd like to try it, but sounds creepy.  Wish I could find a small container. Probably could have in SF or San Diego, but not around here.

Super excited to get very cordial response to my email from John Clement.   He wrote The Switch, by far and  away best in show of the live long & healthy books.  Interesting guy. Practiced law for 20 years,  became an entrepreneur & then devoted 20 years to anti-aging research.   Doubt anyone in the whole wide world knows as much as John.   Offered to send me numerous copies of the book, but I declined, saying I've already made additional purchases for a few ppl.  Don't really know any others who would be interested.   He's big on CR & IF and explains everything at the molecular level.

Progress as of today: 15.2 lbs lost so far, only 8.8 lbs to go!

grannyannie on 11/16/2020:
Great you got a letter back. Hope you find the book helpful.

Jacky82020 on 11/16/2020:
Loving this book! My first ever fan letter to a writer. lol

Horn_of_plenty on 11/16/2020:
never heard of natto, but will listen to what you have to say...the price you wrote puts me OFF!

i agree, maybe you could find it in LA or san diego! haha...at first i thought it looked like a pudding or dessert of some sort. but after reading your taste/smell interpretation, i'll pass!

i'd have taken the book! haha...but then you'd have to mail it to me! LOL...and i think i'm set on studying for now! :)

Jacky82020 on 11/17/2020:
I got my first copy as an ebook from the Brooklyn Library, so sure you could get the ebook or a print copy at whatever library you use.

The natto sounds gross as hell per many people, but I am curious. One thing that concerns me now is I’m seeing ppl say it stinks up the kitchen. Maybe I shouldn’t attempt this at home!

grannyannie on 11/17/2020:
I've been eating/drinking soy for years. Soy milk and tofu mainly. I've read the main problem with too much is for women who are still planning on having babies.

Donkey on 11/17/2020:
I guess I'm missing the point of a stinky dessert? The picture is very pretty - I thought it was yogurt.

Jacky82020 on 11/17/2020:
Lol. It’s not a dessert, it’s a traditional breakfast food in Japan. Called a Super Food due to dense nutrients. Dying to know how stinky. Some fans say it’s more like certain cheeses and not all that ghastly.

Left the island of Okinawa and off to the Seven Day Adventists town near LA.  (Blue Zones book)

Had no idea they were so into health & fitness.  Healthiness is next to Godliness they say.   Most, but not all, are vegetarians.   Some vegans and some eat a little meat.   Big on nuts, tomatoes, and water, among other fruits & veggies.   Cute story about 93 yr old heart surgeon.   He was in his yard digging fence post holes when the author met him.  Said the contractor wanted 6K and the materials were 2K, so he's building the fence himself.   Then he rushed off for an open heart procedure.   Says he is no longer the lead surgeon, but is highly sought after as 1st or 2nd assistant, and if the lead doc dropped dead he could finish up.   These ppl have been used as controls in many large & well respected studies for decades.   They don't smoke or drink.   Even coffee and tea are frowned upon.   They live longer and are much healthier than others.

Had the rest of the cooked cole slaw mix topped by a cup of soy beans & hot sauce.   Very filling, maybe 400 calories tops.

Progress as of today: 15.2 lbs lost so far, only 8.8 lbs to go!

Horn_of_plenty on 11/15/2020:
listen, in LA, people can afford whateva they want! you know what i mean!?

i have a friend who used to live in LA...holy...you should see the types of restaurant meals she posts. POKE always...fresh fish always...i cannot even get that here in Queens...they have a LOT more food and fresh options on the other coast, that i can tell just from her uploads, constantly, daily!

Jacky82020 on 11/16/2020:
Know what you mean. Lived in SF for years and later San Diego. Visited LA many times.

That old heart surgeon must have been one cheap bastard erecting the fence himself to save money.

They’re an interesting group. Don’t know much about them, but they sure prove most disease is lifestyle related.

Dinner!   The stir fry cabbage was a bit on the bland side.   Will use healthy oil as HOP suggests next time and maybe some garlic  powder.

Cooked soy beans.   Since I remembered to soak beans overnight, it didn't take all day to crockpot them.   Will eat one cup with equal amount of the Italian veggie mix and a little of the stir fryed cabbage & carrot mix.   Beans & veggies amazingly filling.   Did not buy my favorites this week: multigrain English muffins, blue cheese & hot mustard.  Maybe in the future.

Reading about the so called Blue Zones today.   Areas with high numbers of centurions and supercenturians.   All attributed to lifestyle: diet, mostly plant based.   Physical labor.   Very interesting. They live long because of very low incidence of killer diseases like cancer and cardiac problems.

Progress as of today: 15.2 lbs lost so far, only 8.8 lbs to go!

Horn_of_plenty on 11/14/2020:
it's amazing these centurions. I've watched interviews with them and similar to what you say....most of all, you should see how these people live...so active...there's a man that was around 90-100 that used to visit his younger wife everyday, walking at least a mile there and then back, just to see her (she was in assisted living).

Jacky82020 on 11/14/2020:
Yep! Fascinating! Some of the guys in Sardinia were 107 and walking miles over rugged terrain to herd their sheep

Horn_of_plenty on 11/14/2020:
i like your soy bean plan with veggies. they do have tons of protein. make sure to get in a little fat, like, stir-fry with a little olive oil or any oil you like. you need a little fat or your hair and stuff will eventually become brittle (i have that experience in my last year of college to prove that it will mess up your hair/skin)!

Jacky82020 on 11/14/2020:
Yeah, thanks for the reminder. My diet is low in fat, especially since I’m eliminating the blue cheese. Should have bought a bag of avocados

Horn_of_plenty on 11/14/2020:
oh yes, spices will help that cabbage stir fry. use real oil, it only makes it healthier and won't add more than 50-100 calories to it...usually. just add like up to 2 tbsp of oil for the entire bag of slaw. also a little salt will help, pepper, and garlic as you suggested. will make it out of this world.

the whole meal looks a lot more appealing than the shakes or just pickles. way to go on a healthy approach. remember to season, use spices, olive oil...your meal will be much more tasty.

thank you for sharing a pic of your cooking. nice job on totally delving into veggies.

Jacky82020 on 11/14/2020:
Will definitely lube/spice that slaw!

Horn_of_plenty on 11/14/2020:
oh, pretty plate!..the blue and white design is really cute.

Jacky82020 on 11/14/2020:
From the clearance aisle at Walmart. 50 cents. All my dishes are mismatched

Horn_of_plenty on 11/14/2020:
i need to go back to my crockpot...it's taken some time off for a few months.

Jacky82020 on 11/14/2020:
My most used cooker in the kitchen, next to the microwave. My beautiful turquoise 1950s repro stove just sits there looking pretty.

Horn_of_plenty on 11/14/2020:
I may give in...and try to do some more bean dishes myself. i used to not feel full when eating beans and soy...but maybe i can do it now...maybe before i was too low on the fat too and that's why i couldn't feel satisfied. anyways, just like everyone, it's boring to always eat the same foods...i need to do more research :) for some good foods to cook in the crockpot this winter. last year i tried corned beef...so good.

grannyannie on 11/15/2020:
You could try soy sauce in your stir frys. Needs some kind of flavouring. A bit of chili powder maybe?

Jacky82020 on 11/15/2020:
Excellent suggestions! I’m all over them!

My soy beans are here!   Will soak tonight and crockpot it tomorrow.   Excellent analysis. 300 calories in a cooked cup with 30 grams of protein.   Best bean ever.

Finally broke the 120 barrier.   Next milestone will be 117, what I weighed when we moved here in 2011.

Got all kinds of healthy veggies. A raw shredded mix of red and green ccabbage and carrots. Will stirfry with a little Pam. Got a whole big green cabbage.  And lots of mixed frozen vegetables.   Apparently Walmart pickup does not like weighing produce, so they overcharge with a fixed price.   Used the pickup service for everything except the produce.   Got dry black and kidney beans. Soy beans on their way from Amazon,  Soy powder coming from Southern California. Bought some almond milk to make shake.   Hope it isn't too ghastly!

Trying to eat only between 4PM and 10PM.   More calories around 4-5.   Veggies & beans & lots or hot sauce.   Oddly enough the best for me is the Walmart Louisiana one.   Lowest in sodium & cheap, a dollar a bottle.  Major plus is reduced sodium.

Progress as of today: 14.6 lbs lost so far, only 9.4 lbs to go!

grannyannie on 11/13/2020:
Well done. Sounds like a healthy stir fry.

I've made a shake with almond milk, banana, cocoa, vanilla before. Yum. I don't buy almond milk anymore though and use soy or coconut.

Jacky82020 on 11/13/2020:
Sounds far more palatable than the proposed soy protein powder shake! I will add cocoa or some of the zero calorie syrups. May have to swill quickly!

Maria7 on 11/13/2020:
Yayyyyy! Congratulations! Happy for you!

Jacky82020 on 11/13/2020:
Thanks, Maria! It gets so hard sometimes, but I am not giving up.

horn_of_plenty on 11/13/2020:
Congrats on breaking below 120! I really like your plan on cooking up tons of veggies.

I know my diary doesn’t reflect my usual type of eating - when I am working and busy, I usually count on lots of veggies to fill me up so that I don’t want to snack a lot after my lunch at work !

I used to eat more veggies, especially during my lunches when at work, than what I’m doing now. I figure it will be not too difficult to go back to how I used to be...

Jacky82020 on 11/13/2020:
I lived on protein bars when I worked outside the house in San Diego. Saw several different kinds in the clearance aisle at Walmart today. Decided to pass, but some looked good, like candy bars almost. But looks can be deceiving.

Maria7 on 11/13/2020:
Never tried eating soybeans before. I am a lima beans girl. Bet they are good, though and that is very high protein count in soybeans.

Jacky82020 on 11/13/2020:
Been years since I cooked soy beans. Hope they taste ok. I forgot. Love Lima and every other one I can think of. But none pack the nutritional bang of soy. Still good though.

Donkey on 11/14/2020:
Congratulations on breaking through to the 110's! You did it!

I don't know that I've had straight-up soybeans, ever, except for when I was a kid. I remember my grandmother having a dish of salted, roasted soybeans on her coffee table from time to time. Kind of like peanuts, but different.

Jacky82020 on 11/14/2020:
Appear to be the most nutritious bean. Don’t know why so uncommon in the American diet. Had to order them from Amazon

Still stuck at 120.  Bummer.   On some days, the CR & IF are more difficult than others.  Today is not easy, but I am so determined to get below 120 that I'm staying strong.  It has to come any day!

Ordered soy protein powder.  Been years since I went there, but moving towards a more plant based diet.   Out of frozen salmon, so added big bag to the weekly Walmart pickup list in progress.   Will go inside only for the produce. Need snap peas, cabbage, tomatoes, bananas and citrus.   And a big pomegranate for the parrots to share.

Kept 120 after day of very healthy food & CR/IF.   So much want to get below 120, Soon! I will not fail. I shall overcome.

Tossed a pound of dry pinto beans in the crockpot.  analysis compared to soy beans bad!  3 to 1, carbs carbs v protein, no fat.  But only beans in the house & the soy will come from Amazon tomorrow.

Huge breakthrough in feral cat I've been feeding for a year.   A few days ago, he let me scratch his neck while he was eating treats.   I went in for a full back pet and Little Flash allowed it!  It's my fervent wish to bring him inside to live with the two house cats.   Never thought we'd progress to this point.  I did catch him in a Haveaheart cage last year.   It was a disaster. He escaped & hated me  for weeks, but apparently all is forgotten. He finally took to the heated outdoor cat house hidden in the bushes.

Progress as of today: 14 lbs lost so far, only 10 lbs to go!

grannyannie on 11/11/2020:
We have a cupboard full of various dried beans. Hubby made veggie child the other night with kidney beans and Quorn mince.

Good job on the weight!

Jacky82020 on 11/11/2020:
Thanks. Beans are the best! I use kidney beans in chili but have been lazy and buying the cans. Wish I had some dry ones. Black beans also great nutrition

grannyannie on 11/11/2020:
Husband uses a pressure cooker to cook the beans after soaking them. We also have black beans, chickpeas, etc.

Jacky82020 on 11/11/2020:
Wishing now I had a pressure cooker. Usually soak overnight, but forgot. They have been in the crockpot all day and still not fully cooked.

Donkey on 11/11/2020:
I bought husband a Foodi a couple of years back and he loves it!

Your story about the feral cat makes me feel very hopeful! I leave cat food out in the winter, for anybody who might be passing by.

Jacky82020 on 11/11/2020:
Today I tried sitting on the porch with the treats on my leg. He got close, but would not take them. He does eat from my hand, since a month or so. Big shock!

horn_of_plenty on 11/11/2020:

Little Flash LOL, love the name.

Jacky82020 on 11/12/2020:
Big Flash lives in the house. They are both black with a white “flash” on their chests. They appeared out front a year or so ago, maybe a few months apart. Big Flash is a lot bigger. lol. We caught him in a live trap & took him to the vet. She said he was a 3 yr old neutered male. He quickly tamed down, must have been someone’s pet. We advertised we had him in a little local online neighborhood group and no one knew anything about him. Little Flash is obviously feral.

Actually ate dinner with the husband at 5.  Salmon and mixed veggies, the Italian frozen blend.   He had brown rice too.   Always have big bag of frozen salmon fillets around.

Reading over & over that calories are more efficiently metabolised during the day.

Dang!   I love eating nights.

The Switch author is crazy about macadamia nuts.  Shocked to see  the going rate is $20 a pound.   So are they gold dusted or what?

Down to 120, but based upon past experience, it will not stick.   Will bounce up before settling in.

Extremely impressed by book the Switch and considering radically changing my diet, but keeping with the calorie restriction and intermittent fasting.   Much good science in this book. Discusses groups of ppl who have little or no cancer/cvs disease etc etc.  Most diet based, but one group has genetic defects which mimic IF/CR.

Ordered sack of soy beans form Amazon,  Walmart doesn't have them and I don't want to run around town and risk exposures.   Ideal food!   Cooked them before, but not for years. Will eat with vegetables , probably the mixed frozen ones with carrots, broccoli, cauliflower & zucchini.

Here is Rocky's new crush.  Frankie is jealous!

 My boys!

Front yard!

managed to catch market lows.   made a tidy profit and purchased 10 more acres for a wildlife sanctuary in Colorado.   They care for all kinds of big cats, bears, wolves etc. they are in a lease to own agreement for 10K acres. About 80% paid for already.

Starving.  fasted until 3PM and shoved a few ravioli in my mouth while fixing the husband's diner plate.

I am beside myself!   DOW way the hell up based upon news of promising  Covid vaccine.  Sold maybe 110K premarket, mostly VTI (total market ETF), some cruise lines and air lines.

BUT!  Want to sell more and can't log on to any of 3 accounts: TD, Vanguard & Merrill.  Circuits overloaded.  Big sell off!  Oh, well.  At least I got some trades in. Usually those big pops don't last long.

Weght not dropping & I have been so good on IF and CR.   hopefully soon!
