 LOL.   Matt just called from Angola.   that's a rest stop in NY.   also name of notorious Louisiana prison.   I have no idea of the connection.   I am beside myself with excitement!

 

 The husband will be off for NY at 9 to get the pair of axolotls.   it's 8:15 now.  Appears to me this person overdid it on decorations.   I am more into plants & rocks.   Axies require cool temps, below 65, & ideally more like 58-60.   ppl use aquarium fans & chillers.   The breeder in Pittsburgh uses a window AC as needed.  The sunroom is the coldest room here.   We only turn on heat for meals.   Otherwise set to 59F in cold weather.   Purchase includes 2 small clip on fans.   I have no idea how effective these little fans are.   I will deal with appropriate cooling when needed,  Appears Bear's chilly days made it to Pennsylvania!

Relaxing super high potassium diet.   Will stick with 3,000 mg daily, mostly veg juice.   Nutritious & best 50 cal appetite suppressant I know of.  

Progress as of today: 21.2 lbs lost so far, only 3.8 lbs to go!

How exciting for you! I like the tank picture you shared, but I'm eager to see what you do with yours, too. I like plants in a tank, too, so I'm looking forward to your tank interpretation.

Need clarification: are you saying that the vegetable juice acts as an appetite suppressant? If I'm understanding that correctly, then I would agree that vegetable juice is very refreshing and satisfying.

Yes! For me anyway, the 45-50 cal per 8 oz of veg juice is the best appetite suppressant I’ve encountered & all because of the Great Potassium Hunt. It’s very filling & rich in Vit C, calcium, Vit A & has some iron.

I plan to drink 3 glasses daily. Nothing I would of thought of before. Think it’s mostly a tomato juice concentrate & 7 others are added because they like calling it V8. LOL

I got bashed in the mean old fish forum for having the big pirate ship. Well it’s still available & sells for $100, lots of caves & hiding places. Everyone is big on rocks & very expensive (>$500) 3D backgrounds that look like rocks. LOL

I got into fish 3 short months ago. Thought about it for years, saw a 5 gallon tank kit at Walmart for $30 & bought it. Have 2 colorful male guppies & 2 White Cloud yellow minnows & plants there. This is a cold water tank. Bought 10 G tanks and a 40 later. Then the 90 G cabinet display tank with a 20 G sump tank below.

All freshwater. Saw some live coral to die for at the local saltwater shop. Not sure I’ll go there. Lots of fussy aspects, worse than freshwater & ongoing costs, like for the salt etc.

veg juice sure is an appetite suppressant - i don't care for veg juice so i'd have a hard time drinking it daily but it sure is nice and low cal.

The cage? You mean the tank? Yes, it’s mine. She sold everything: axolotls, tank, stand, filter, lights, much decor.

The pink ones in the pic are my new babies! On their way home now.

Their purpose? Is that an evolutionary or existential question? LOL. Their purpose is to please me.

They can live up to 15 years in captivity. Most are captive bred. On endangered species lists some places. Consumed as a delicacy in Mexico where they hail from (many varieties anyway)

They require cool temps & don’t like light. Seller not certain of genders. Hard to tell, I’m reading, when under 8-12 months. These are 9. Seller thinks male & female because they’re inseparable. This surprises me; I need to learn more.

I am active in fish forums. Heard about them there. Amphibians, but popular aquarium pet. Joined an amphibian forum. Not very active. Mostly I google & watch YouTube vids.

Never would have thought of V8 or generic equivalent. It was the potassium. Don’t like tomato soup or juice, but can’t recall trying it for a hundred years. Won’t go there now. V8 more nutritious. It’s ok. I add ice & usually lemon juice & it’s ok. All I had today is one glass of it & coffee with a lil protein drink. Hungry but not famished.

I make many culinary compromises to stay thin.

I will. Product came in 4 packets. Said to use one for each 8 oz of heavy cream to whip. I find this very surprising! Cream is so easy to whip. Never needed an additive, Who’d want to add approximately $1.50 to the cost of whipping cream when it’s unnecessary? Hoping much less will work for yogurt/cream cheese or might as well buy the whipped items. Will be fun to experiment with, so thanks.

Thanks! They are & here's hoping I can maintain. Paid $500 for this setup & couldn’t have put it together for less than 2 Grand. Did have to buy 12.5 gallon Coleman Coolers & 5 gallon covered buckets & pay the kid which added $200 to my costs.

Oh beautiful!!!! That's a nice cabinet too! I hope you got a deal on it, because brand new, those things can be ridiculously expensive. I can see why though - that's like a piece of furniture, not "just' a fish tank.

Also, I wanted to thank you about your comments from Thursday, how you use Ameritrade. That helped me feel better about Husband's determination to go that route.

Got a SUPER deal on the entire setup: ~20 fish, some big & pricey. One worth $150. Came with 20 gallon sump tank below main tank & many accessories. Saw that pirate ship at the local aquarium shop yesterday for $100. It’s functional. Many fish cave dwelling species from Africa. Tom, the fat speckled cat, has his private man cave & comes out to eat & then goes home. Easily a 2K setup.

Just posted long one with a pic and it went to the yellow screen and vanished!  Will see if this posts 

Been very busy with aquarium found on Craigslist.  90 gallons in a mahogany cabinet with the a canopy.   took 3 hours to help seller dismantle at his place near the NY border.  Tank has 20 fish, mostly cichlids.   A 6 inch catfish from I think Africa that is absolutely adorable.

Got home & realized no way we could carry empty 160 gallon tank into house.   Neighbors mostly elderly.  Found  on Craigslist: 21 year old college athlete wants work.   Nice kid from Canada.   will have him oit soon to trim shrubs etc.

We did hire the kid that very same day! He was at soccer practice & came by as soon as he could. the fish were ok in the Coleman Cooler with a pair of bubblers but I wanted them home ASAP. Very pleasant boy from Toronto. I’m having him out soon to do landscaping. Got away from me worse than ever this year. Matt does ride around on the Deere & mow lawns. but I’m the weed whacker & bush trimmer. Or was. The student athlete will be getting extra workouts soon. LOL

Yes! 20 or so fish. Hard to count since I’m unfamiliar with the species. And they hide out in the big pirate’s ship & hollow fake rocks that came with the tank. Love this 6” African cat fish I call Tom. He swims around on his back like an otter & loves to eat.

Will post Pics. Not getting very good ones with this iPad. One of the overhead tank lights needs replacement, so that’s not helping either

MY DOG!  GOOD GIRL!  

 Did the potassium blood draw.  anxious to get results.   expect emails from both the lab & MyChart this afternoon or early evening.   not a great experience. Puncture painful, far more than usual.  bled lots after.   she pressed down & filled many gauze pads with blood. Pressure hurt & I told her.  She said: Sorry, I have to stop the bleeding.   Instead of the usual flat bruise, I now have a painful elevated lump.   worse draw i ever had!

 My USPS mail alert shows a Jury Summons!   Got one two years ago.   Judge dismissed us because defendant was Hispanic & none on jury. Never served before. Was once an alternate.   Boring!

I know! Always carry my iPad & read books. Last time I read this true story about how some jurors made hasty decisions because they were dying for a smoke!

The time I was an alternate many fellow jurors raced down the hall like bats out of hell! My first thought was they had to pee or poop really bad. But they exited the building & engulfed me in a vast cloud of smoke when I got outside. LOL

 I HATE GARMIN!!!

So I ordered a new tracker.   All I want are steps, time & distace.  Fitbit messing up on time. Pain in the ass to connect Garmin.  Turns out to get data from device to app on the iPad, I have to hold it up to the open app & key in a bunch of crap.   I did get the less expensive model because all I want are the 3 basics. ~$100.   paid less for low end Fitbits.   Made big mistake in not buying through Amazon.   Have to pay to return to Garmin!    Grrrrr! 

Still unable to determine how long it would take for my high potassium diet to kick in on the blood test. Thinking the 10 days by Saturday may be enough & going then.   Very easy to do three 1,000 items & whatever else is consumed.   So going over 3K everyday.

OK, good to know about the Garmin. Wow, I'm so sorry this was so frustrating. What is your next plan, then? Another FitBit or an upgrade on the Garmin? Or something completely different?

When I've started other supplements, I've been told usually 2-3 weeks. However, you are doing yours through foods - which is really the best way - so yes, it might be towards the lower end of that spectrum. That is to say, you'd see effects sooner rather than later.

What date is your retest?

No appointment. I can walk into the lab with the order when I want. It says due by 8/24. I can self order another test, but it would cost me $50. I am assuming the insurance will cover the first test in full.

I will be returning the Garmin via USPO. Then probably another low end Fitbit. I really do like their app,

Yes! It’s crazy! I cannot get an answer. Everything addresses potassium replacement with IVs in the hospital or potent RX’d pills. Level goes up in 2-24 hours these ways. I’m thinking K is quickly metabolized & 1 week should reflect my increased dietary uptake. So curious that I may go in Saturday. If it’s not as high as I’d like, could retake the test in another few weeks, but probably at my expense. $50. Quest allows one to self order many tests, but you have to pay.

If I still come in low it would suggest an underlying disease, but all my other labs were normal.

Still on my potassium kick!  Easily doing 3000 a day.  1000 mg, vegetable juice, 1000 apricots, 1000 various sources.   Sometimes soybeans with tomato paste & hot sauces. The other day was heating 2 Healthy Choice 4 cheese raviolis for Matt & noticed 990 mg potassium.   So tossed one in the microwave for myself.   these are the only frozen meals I eat on a regular basis, excluding pizza.   excellent nutrition.   low sodium, high protein & only 250 Cals each. So checked out other HC Cafe Steamers.   Saw the potatoes & BBQ beef tips I like is 1240 potassium.   Had that last night when I made the steak for Matt.

This new diet is doing much to alleviate my chronic constipation & don't understand way.   The veg juice has 3 gms fiber per serving.   Same for the apricots & prunes.   Like the prunes but higher in calories and lower in potassium than the apricots, so won't be buying more after these 2 bags are gone.   Too bad!   They are really tasty.

So was getting 40 gms of fiber from Fiber One & hi fiber English muffins. Maybe 15 from new hi potassium foods, but better poops.   Thinking the poop factor will diminish soon.

I would not have have even *guessed* that you could find potassium in HC meals. That's really nice! This way, you can get some tasty variety!

I was surprised on the HC.

Very interested in retesting. PCP office said 2 weeks enough to show uptake, but can’t find a confirmation anywhere & have googled my fingers raw. All online info re very low levels brought up by IVs & potent supplements . Guess I’ll wait the full 3 weeks, but would definitely go sooner if I had confidence it’d be reliable.

Fiber can also be constipating...but most likely the improvement on that is from the fruit as far as I can tell...of course we all know about the prunes effects...apricots are similar.....sounds like eating apricots regularly would be a good thing....i noticed that Jif peanut butter is I believe 189 on the potassium scale for 2T.....not high but a good source of protein too and handy.

prunes/dried fruit often really help with constipation...and the veggie juice may help too in getting in more liquid intake. go you! i'm sure you feel much better! that's good there's some nutrition to the HC meals. some are good, indeed.

Weird how the two HC I like are highest in potassium! Tried a few Chinese & the teriyaki which looked good on the box, but were mushy and rather bland.

Did good on the potassium yesterday.   Over 3000 mg. 1000, dried apricots. 1000 tomato paste with lemon juice and water, 1000 vegetable juice.  More in the fish sticks etc.  The vegetable juice tastes and looks very similar to the tomato paste mixture, but is better. Contains some spinach, carrot and celery juice, but has to be mostly tomatoes. Going to toss a pound of the dried apricots in my little crockpot today & see what happens.   So thanks for that idea, Bear.   Also thanks to Happy for the apricot chicken thigh recipe.   I have chicken thighs in the freezer.   Air fried some a few days ago.

Got a few bags of pitted prunes yesterday. Haven't had any in longer than I can remember. Not bad, but high in calories and low In potassium compared to the vegetable juice and apricots, so,won't purchase again. Will stick with V juice, apricots and soybeans with tomato paste for my big potassium foods.

Sounds like you got a lot of good potassium going yesterday.....I would not throw out any leftover apricot juice if you soak or cook them...potentially potassium in that too. I'm sure you are raising those numbers well. You might even find fresh apricots in your store now too for a change. I love solving health issues with food....very satisfying.......my youngest son eats primarily organic food....not 100%...but about 80%....and he is feeling really good since he started that. He has added hiking...and he is adding more and more weight to a backpack to up his strength...since they live on a hillside...he is hiking on their land up and down hills....he has lost some weight and gained a lot of muscle......and is just a lot healthier.

If adding a tiny bit of sugar makes you eat more of them I would do it......I have dried apricots too...and notice that some are sweet and others are not...but I haven't added any sugar....or fake sugar....if making jam from them and using it regularly keeps your numbers up then that might be a good way to do that and sweeten to taste to make them palatable for you.

Apricot chicken thighs - oh that sounds SO good.

Yeah, that's too bad about prunes. I love 'em. I'm not sure there's a dried fruit that I don't love... but then again, I love stewed prunes too.

Thanks! Your idea to add tomato paste to the soybeans was great! Actually improved the taste. Added my usual hot sauce.

Is it difficult to find high iron sources? What about supplements? Are they ok? I did not like the potassium supplements. Only 99 mg. The ones I discarded were 50. Read they use an IV for potassium in really deficient sick ppl. & it corrects in 2-24 hours depending on who you read. Also have prescribed pills. But I’m liking the food sources over pills. The nurse who called suggested all these low sources relative to what I’ve found. I’m not up to half a dozen (each) bananas and oranges a day.

I have Fage 0% yogurt here that says it has 260mgs in 3/4ths of a cup...some chopped apricots mixed in that would be good...I also saw where quinoa is high...and a medium baked potato is 940 mgs.

That’s good. I use the Walmart nonfat Greek yogurt. Cheaper! Just checked. 180 mg in 3/4 cup. 17 gms protein. 90 calories.

Didn’t know potatoes were that high. Think yams/sweet potatoes higher in potassium than white. Will check this out! Thanks.

Iron sources that I know of are spinach, red meat, seafood, beans --- I don't eat much of any of that except spinach. IDK, I take 2 OTC pills per my doctor's recommendation. It causes constipation so I take a fiber supplement just to keep things semi-moving. Taking the supplement HAS helped with my fatigue, and my iron levels were up at the last blood test (pre-COVID) but the iron reserves just aren't there. After some deduction, I believe the conclusion is that I'll need to be on iron supplements until menopause.

I don’t eat much red meat, but occasional seafood is ok. Never checked the soybeans for iron. Great on protein & potassium. Like spinach. Had a fresh spinach salad lunch with a sliced hard boiled egg & fat free dressing for years until I got sick of the monotony.

I think the numbers will fly off the charts soon. Tried unsuccessfully to google & never got a decent idea. Mostly they discussed hospital IVs & RX supplements. PCP office said retest in 2-3 weeks. Would be very simple for me to get 3000 K plus with three 9 oz servings of V8, but really do like apricots & was eating soybeans. Slacked off on them, but back on track.

Thanks. The V8 juice (Walmart or brandname) is the easiest way. 9 oz is >1000 mg. Didn’t see it on any list I found. Was at Walmart checking out tomato juice & the V8 was next to it. I’m thinking of adding a dash of lemon juice. Will omit the hot sauce because I’m sipping fast.

 The Walmart vegetable jiuice is another potassium winner.  900 mg in 8 oz & 50 calories.

This is 1000 mg K, dried apricots.   Most are very good. Some like chewing leather. Going to follow Bear's suggestion & stew some.   Will cook in water in microwave 

BEAR!   I'm setting up a Sea Monkey Farm to feed my fishies. The cysts (eggs) & monkey food should arrive soon. I have ~$50 in this, so those fish better appreciate it.

I plan to watch the fish enjoy their meal! Read they live ~30 minutes in fresh water. Not a problem. The fish will devour them in minutes. You can feed the baby hatched brine shrimp or let them grow up to 1/4 inch & feed then.

Found a great source of K!  (K is the periodic table symbol for element 19, potassium.   comes from a Latin word)   There's 305 mg K in 2 tablespoons of tomato paste. Found a large can lurking in a cabinet.  30 calories per 2 T serving.    So 10 teaspoons = >1000 mg = ~100 calories.  Plan is to add lemon juice & swill.   May add hot sauce.   Possibly vodka.   LOL  Just kidding.

Thinking I'll do at least  3000 mg K daily & retest in 3 weeks.

Now that’s an idea! May try, thanks. Especially if drinking it is unpleasant. I currently add hot sauce to the soybeans, so I’d add it to the tom paste as well. I like tom paste in his place. Like in pizza & spaghetti sauce.

Checked the concentrated lemon juice bottle & was shocked to see no K. Understand OJ and orange citrus have some K. Lemon juice does have some vit C

I was thinking the same thing about the tomato paste and lentils then I see Donkey was thinking that too....The apricots will be mice to work with as well....you could soak them in a little bt of hot water and make a smoothie out of them...add a little spinach, banana or a lot of things....there is plenty of ways and get those numbers up.....

lemon juice def makes things more flavorful as i was using it quite a bit lately in salads mixed with a little olive oil. such a wonderful dressing! i also used salt/pepper. you can also use garlic/pepper...

Finding all the potassium info very interesting.  Puzzling.     normal range is 3.4-4.8.   assuming I am remembering correctly.   I am at 3.2.  Quest allows one to view numbers over time on graphs.   I have steadily declined since 2017.   But this is the first year below normal range.   Matt is at 4.   He was at 4.8 until this year.

I calculate his potassium intake to be ~1500 mg daily: one banana, one small citrus, 4 oz OJ and whatever low amounts are in his other food.   Since I got tired of soybeans & spinach, mine is well under 1000 mg.   I plan to get it to 3000 with the dried apricots, soybeans & spinach.   Right now only soybeans in the house. Turns out Walmart has best dried apricot prices.  $5 a pound for some imported from Turkey.  $10 pd for their generic.  Have 3 pds Turkish ones on the pickup list for Friday.

Well, I'm all about the dried apricots - YUMMY!!!! I was quite pleased to see that your on your list yesterday (and today). If you are tired of soybeans and spinach, perhaps you can find different ways to season them. Spinach, of course, can be eaten raw or cooked. When I was younger, I didn't care so much for raw spinach, but I like it now... well, I like it better. I can't say it would be my first choice, if I'm honest.

So 2-3 weeks and then retest, correct? You got this!

Matt always eats the same things. Exactly same breakfast everyday for years: oatmeal. Exact same lunch: slice of cheddar, slice of lunch meat & cherry tomatoes. Banana, citrus & cookies for snacks. Whatever dinner I give & often I don’t eat it, & then a huge dessert after dinner.

Not sure if decreased potassium is age related. Could be he’d be higher if the test were retaken.

Will be interesting to see what mine is in 3 weeks or so.

Glad a friend found the NIH article that listed apricots. Always liked them & low cal.

I suspect that potassium stays up as long as you are eating a varied diet....but usually drops when a person gets dehydrated.......the only time i know of when mine dropped was when I took 1 diuretic tablet and had a overreaction.....and got dehydrated.....I was told to eat as many bananas and oranges as i could stand that day and all was well after that. Laxatives and diuretics seem to be the main culprit.

No, the multi vit contains only 2% of the daily rec amount of potassium, 80 mg The potassium supplements are 99 mg. This daily rec of 4500 is crazy. Reading it’s 3500 in other countries
