Hello, everybody! Beautiful, bright, sunny, warm day here in South Carolina. I've been gone most of today, running errands. Now that I'm back, I'm wanting to go back outside again. Eating has not been the best today, not meaning overeating, but meaning eating on the run, however I did take some low-calorie crackers with me. Menu is/has been: Breakfast: Pack reduced-fat peanut butter/cheese crackers, decaf coffee, caffene-free soft drink. Lunch: Banana, vegetable soup, another pack of reduced-fat peanut butter/cheese crackers, caffene-free drink. Supper will be grilled barbequed chicken (yum!) and salad, decaf tea, decaf coffee. Yes, it's time to get outside again and grill out! Snacks will be coffee and maybe another banana. Treadmill workout with ankle weights and wrist weights on and water, water, water. Have a great day!

SoccerMom on 02/05/2001:
I think a few highlights might just do the trick for you, too! LOL I had hair that was down to my thighs, in high school, so I know what you mean about closing it in a door, or sitting on it. I finally cut it when I had kids. Just took too much effort to take care of it. I love the shorter hair...just wash and go, most of the time.

The grilled stuff sounds yummy! We grilled steak the other day (when it was 60 here), but now it's cold again. Oh well...spring IS coming!

Have a wonderful day.

Oh, I am dreaming about some warm weather! Of course, I do love the snow, but it makes you think twice about going outside (Let's see, where are my mittens . . . lace up those boots . . . ) Sounds like you are making good, sensible food choices despite your busy life -- congratulations!

Maria,,,,,,you are doing really good lately,,,and you really sound good to,,,consistency is the key:}}

Kyrin on 02/05/2001:
Hi Maria!

You asked if the Good N.E.W.S. diet is written out any where. not really. I just follow what seems like good sense in four areas. Pretty much as you already do.

Nutrition-- (1500-1800 calories per day; follows the food pyramid for portions with the following exceptions: 1. substitute whole grains whenever possible, starchy veggies (potatoes, corn, peas, beans, etc.) count in the whole grain category not veggies. 2. the goal is to include at least one (each) dark green, red, and orange vegetable every day. Aim for 9 fruits and vegetables total. 3. Check with Dietwatch to be sure the protein requirements have been met for the day. Use meat as needed to supplement dairy and plant proteins...this usually comes out to be between 2 and 5 ounces of meat, poultry or fish daily. 4. Try to limit fats to between 25 and 30 percent of the daily calories--my weakest area.

Exercise--15 to 30 minutes (minimum) daily--no excuses other than illness.

Water--Aim for 1/2 oz per pound of body weight, plus as needed for losses from active workouts.

Sleep--Aim for 7-9 hours per night.

See, it's not really hard to do. DietWatch lets me know when I have done what I needed to do for the day. So far, the number of deficit calories (in pound losses) have shown up on the scale. 7 predicted, 7 lost. ...It will be interesting to see what happens asI get closer to goal weight.

Kyrin on 02/05/2001:
Me again... To answer the DietWatch question... Yes, DW is a free program that you can download to your computer (at www.dietwatch.com ). I use it ona daily basis to track my nutritional intake and exercise. I LOVE it!

After you have entered your resting heart rate, height, weight, and other info, it will help you track the calories burned through exercise (made more accurate if you use your heart rate during exercise).

As for tracking foods, the database is loaded with info. If I find that my brand's info is not included, I just add it...as well as adding the info for my own recipes that I use fairly often.

At the end of each day, I check for the calorie balance, which if I've been working toward my goal should give me a nice calorie deficit in pounds lost. (For example, today I had a deficit of -0.395 pounds.) If I string together enough of those days in a week, I get a nice pound or two to disappear. So far, it's been pretty accurate for me.

I spent some time playing with DW and have discovered the range at which I will lose weight. Eat too many calories, and I don't lose weight...eat too few calories and I don't lose weight either.

If you want, you can e-mail me at cjgillis@earthlink.net

Hello everybody...Take a look at the number to the side...THE PLATEAU IS BROKEN!!!! (Pacman does his dance.......music plays.........). Okay, so the plateau is broken a little, but still it counts. Hope you all are having a great day today. Our pastor preached a great sermon this morning, as usual. He is a fantastic preacher. The sermon was on the sanctity of human life. After church, came home and ate lunch. Menu today is/has been: Breakfast: Small piece pizza, 1/2 banana, decaf soft drink, coffee. Lunch was barbequed chicken breast, without skin, 1 cup string beans, decaf soft drink. Snacks: pack of peanuts, pack chocolate crackers, (200 calorie kind). Supper will be something light. Also decaf coffee this afternoon and tonight. It is a very rainy, chilly day here in South Carolina.

mylilsista on 02/04/2001:
Cngratulations on the weight loss!! I think I hit my plateau last week. I plan to start working out this week...working out will definately break the cycle. You're doing great! Keep up the good work (hug).

muggg on 02/04/2001:

Hi, everybody! Hope you are all having a great weekend! Hubby and I went and ate out buffet today. I was careful to not overdo. We had a lot of company this afternoon, drank a lot of coffee. I think I must have made about 5 pots of coffee (decaf). Just a real nice day. Well, guess I'll read your journals now. Have a good night. Maria

Hello, everybody. I hope you all have had a good day today. I spent mine mostly by paying bills and filling out our income tax report. I am tired now and ready to go to bed. Eating was okay. Menu was: Breakfast: Fruit (banana, cantaloupe, grapes) and coffee. Lunch was 2 broiled (too cold to grill out) hamburger patties with tomato, onion, and lettuce salad and salad dressing (low cal kind). Supper was vegetable soup, peanut butter/cheese crackers, and tea. Snacks were coffee, decaf. I didn't get in a lot of exercise today because of all the going and then the sitting for hours doing math. Anyway, I hope you all have a good night. Take care, Maria

Hello, everybody! Hope you all are having a nice day today! Well, the interview went great. Only thing is she has to do more interviews and I won't know for 2 or 3 weeks if I have the position. But, that's okay. Well, about yesterday's food binge...I ended up eating about 5 cups of shelled pecans even after I keyed my diary yesterday...I don't know WHAT I was thinking.....because after I sat there watching t.v. and shelling and eating them, THEN I decided to find out how many calories pecans have in them. I was astonished! 90 calories per 2 tablespoons! AND almost total FAT!!! And I thought the 2 slices of pizza were something! I guess I must have consumed close to 5000 calories just in pecans! Also, I had eaten candy and cookies...we're talking about a nice little eating fiasco here....so I finally thought, 'Enough is Enough!' and I put on my ankle weights and did a workout on the treadmill. Then after that I went outside and decided to go for a walk with my ankleweights on in the huge field behind my house. I hadn't been back there in a long time because one day I was walking back there and was on the other side of the field, close to the woods and heard a MONSTROUS, LOUD SOUND, like some savage beast that had hooves (you could hear the sound of its hooves hitting the ground as it charged through the woods, and this bugger was heavy!) charging through the woods coming towards me! I ran fast as I could all the way back home, NEVER looking back to see what it was! But after yesterday's eating binge, I decided to brave the wild and go for a jog in the field next to those woods! Once I got to walking in the field, I looked up at the bright, high-ceiling blue sky overhead and saw a jet going by, leaving a white stream behind it. What a gorgeous day. I thought to myself, if the 'monster' is still in those woods and charges again, should I take the time to get these ankleweights off and then run or run first? Thankfully, everything was okay. So, I got up this morning, and no gain. What a relief! Today is a new day. Back on track again. Maria P.S. Thanks for all the encouragement!

sunny3 on 02/01/2001:
Well good for you! Even though you had a bit of a set back you got your ankle weights on and made up for it! You are definitely motivated!

Geeze if that had been me in that field I would have fainted right away or ran and had to change my underpants when I got home!!! Heehee. Im glad that it didn't come after you again! Did you have red on or bright yellow?? Maybe it was a bull. Lol.

You have a wonderful day and keep up the great motivation! It pays off!

Hugs! ~~Sunny~~

muggg on 02/01/2001:
Maria... you did a great job on your font color!!! Woo Hoo....

You did superb going out and exercising after your "picnic" ! That was a good plan! You did good!

P.S. I'll start my plants indoors. The onions and the leeks are first. Our last killer frost is about April 10-15. So we have to start things early. The onion seeds need to be a certain size and age when planted outdoors or they won't make bulbs. I use acquariums with shop lights over them to make a humid environment for my seedlings. (You don't really need special lights.. shop lights do just fine!)

pastagal on 02/01/2001:
Maria,,,,,i am sitting here laughing over and over at your MONSTER in the woods,,,lol,,,how funny, yet i know it must of been scary at the time,,,but i am trying to picture a lady in the woods walking and then hearing a strange sound like that and your reaction;}}}Probley someone out riding there horse:} ya think?

Hello, everybody! Beautiful day here in South Carolina! I've been outside again, went out on the back deck and threw out bird seed for the birds, also threw out bread for the squirrels, and the birds will probably get some of that, too. Saw three squirrels nearby, playing among the trees. The sun is shining brightly. Feels like early summer outside and supposed to get up into the 70's today. It is probably almost there already. I'm back inside now and looked out the window and saw a dove...I've never seen a dove here before. It just sort of walked around on the ground amidst the birdseed and bread I'd thrown out a few minutes before, but I didn't see the dove eat anything. Well, my daughter orders pizza two nights in a row now and I say, "No, thank-you," when offered some by her and Hubby. I do my best to ignore the pizza and their eating it and stay back here in my computer/music/gym room surfing the web both nights while they eat the pizza and hotwings...... Well, here goes the rest of the story...I was a REALLY GOOD girl yesterday, and have been for a long time now, not going off diet in the least, and I thought I would surely break this plateau this morning and got on the scale when I got up and NO WAY. So.......I knew there were 2 large pieces of pizza in the refrigerator and temptation won. I feel SO ashamed. I ate both pieces, because I thought after I ate the first one, why not go ahead and eat the second one, too??? To make the splurge really good, there were a couple of caramel candies (30 cals each) that I have seen from time to time in one of the kitchen cabinets, so I said to myself, "might as well now!" and there they went! Also, I confess that I ate about 20 pecans after that, too, and had an extra glass of gingerale. After this fiasco, I had the nerve to try on my new size 8's levi jeans to see if they still both fit (yes, I tried on both of them, though they are the same size 8....????)...and they still do fit. Why did I give in? After this, the telephone rang and I answered and before I knew it, I have a job interview for tomorrow morning! (Scream!!!!) It is a nice secretarial position (my trade) :). So now I am thinking, what else is in the kitchen that I've been not allowing myself??? HELP!!! Maria

km on 01/31/2001:
Hello, Don't be so hard on yourself first of all do you way yourself everyday because if you do that is the exact reason why you shouldn't I have the same problem you can be doing real good step on that scale and stay the same or go up a bit and BAM all of sudden your off on a binge the power of the scale is incredible so maybe don't step on the scale except maybe once a week that way you won't see the little up and down numbers hope this helps have a great day~KIM~

Soon2BThin on 01/31/2001:
Hey, been there, done that! I can't tell you how many times the scale monster has sent me over the edge. So I only weigh once a week (or try to) that way I won't do that binge thing too often. It's good that you confessed here, I bet you felt a little better for it, I know I do. They say confession is good for the soul, I think it's good for the diet too, LOL. And I know that feeling, that when you cheat a little, you're afraid you gained back all the inches in one day, right? So try to relax now, tomorrow will be a better day &, after all, those size 8's did still fit, okay? Good luck with the job interview.

SoccerMom on 01/31/2001:
PUT DOWN THAT COOKIE!!! OK....now, quit sabotaging yourself! You know you want to be a healthy happy person, right? Go do a few sets of jumping jacks, run around the outside of your house 6 times, and drink a half-gallon of water. LOL...that should at least jump start your metabolism and help you burn off some of those things you ate. Now...next time you feel the urge to cheat yourself out of a successful day...email me! OK?

Go have a healthy day tomorrow....and stay out of the kitchen tonight!

blondee24 on 01/31/2001:
Hello, You said something that I can really relate to. It is the part where you said you ate a slice of pizza and said you might as well eat the other one too. Well, you are not alone. I dont know if this goes for you, but when I mess up and eat something really bad,I say to myself" well, you just blew it for the day, you might as well, eat all you can the rest of the day and start all over tomorrow." Do you do that or am I alone? Just hang in there. It sounds to me like you are doing pretty good. I would give anything to fit into a size 8. Keep up the good work!!!! Blondee

Bunny on 01/31/2001:
Don't sweat it. We all have our days. Just remember tomorrow is another day to start anew. Take care of yourself and put on your size 8's go stand in front of the mirror and tell yourself how fabulous you are. I hope you have a great interview tomorrow. Have a healthy happy day!!!

Kyrin on 01/31/2001:
Hi Maria! Don't be so hard on yourself. You're a bit frustrated because the scale hasn't moved...so you vented by eating something. Okay. You have a brand new set of opportunities coming your way tomorrow. Enjoy them.

Good luck and "knock 'em dead" on your interview.

BTW--I know the second piece probaably didn't taste as good as the first, but did you at least enjoy the first slice of pizza...before the guilt set in?

Hello, everybody! It is a sunny, warm (60's, supposed to get into the 70's), breezy day here in South Carolina. It rained a little earlier this morning. Rain clears the air, nourishes the ground, the trees, the plants, so that was good. I hope you are all having a great day today! Yesterday, I was out on the deck grilling out barbequed chicken and....the gas ran out, that goes to the grill. I closed the top of the grill over the half-done chicken and took the gas cylinder and had it filled and came back and got the grill fired up again...(I knew the gas was low in the cylinder, I should not have chanced it and should have gone ahead and had it filled before grilling out.... procrastination). Anyway, the chicken turned out great and I grilled a lot of it so there would be plenty for today, too! I walked out to the mailbox early this morning after it had rained to put some cards in the box, Valentine cards, that I'm sending out to my brother, who lives up north, and my mother, who doesn't live too far from here, and some friends. There are leaves everywhere on the ground. Looks like some work ready to be done. I'm glad our lawnmower has a bagger. A little squirrel came down a tree and just sat there and looked at me as I walked to the mailbox. He was so cute. There are LOTS of squirrels around here and sometimes we get wild rabbits, too, who come out of the woods. I have seen squirrels and a wild rabbit eating together, bread that I had thrown out to them. I love animals. My next door neighbor's cats think they are mine, too. They always come over when I am grilling out. Okay, it's not me, it's the food they love! :) I hope you all have a great day! Maria

SoccerMom on 01/30/2001:

Hi, everybody! It is a pretty, warm, in the 60's, sunny day here in S.C. In a little while, I'm going outside to grill some barbequed chicken. The birds are singing in the trees over here! I walked around outside a while ago to see if anything is getting green leaves yet, but no, not yet. It won't be long, however, spring is right around the corner! Less than 2 months away! I hope all of you are doing great today. My menu for today is/has been: Breakfast: Banana, pack peanut butter nekot cookies, gingerale. Lunch: Bowl homemade vegetable soup, pack of peanut butter/cheese crackers, gingerale. Supper will be barbequed grilled chicken and salad. Snack will be another banana and maybe some popcorn. Treadmill workout and at least 64 ounces water. Take care, all of you and I am looking forward to reading your journals! Maria

Hi, everybody! Hope you all are having a great day today! It is a sunny, cool (50 degrees) day here in S.C. We had a great church service this morning and someone got saved! :) Looks like you are all doing well, I just finished reading your journals, the ones that have written so far today. My menu for today is/has been: Breakfast: 1 ear corn on the cob, plain, 1 cup watermelon/cantaloupe cubes, gingerale. Lunch: 1 hamburger patty with onions and ketchup, no buns, 1 cup string beans, tea. Snack: popcorn and gingerale. Supper will be homemade vegetable soup. Water: at least 64 oz, but more if possible. Workout on treadmill. I think I may need to take it a little easier on the treadmill, the bottoms of my feet feel like blisters are forming on them, they are so sore. (But I doubt I do.) :) Well, you all have a great day today. I enjoy reading all of your journals and am so happy to see all of our newcomers. :) Maria

The movie Savior is not what you may think. First tip off should be the spelling of the word Saviour. It is basically a gory story of the idiocy of war, the story of ethnic cleansing. The story of the Muslims, Bosnians, Croatians. Truthfully I couldn't understand this story on the news, and the movie made it no easier. I will only recommend movies that I'm enthusiastic about, this is not one of them. It is very bloody.

Try wearing 2 pairs of socks in when you exercise if you have room in your shoes for them. Or look for socks that have the extra cushion in the foot.. well worth the money. Once you wear them, you won't go back! Wilson makes some and Sears has some too.
