Hello to you...having a cup of coffee...won't you join me?....I am so happy we are in this journey to healthier weights together here at DD.  After all, our journeys are really all about 'life-style changes'...And little things mean a lot.  We may not realize it but they really do.  Sometimes it is so easy to become heavily focused on big things and ignore little things.  We all do it sometimes.

I was thinking about how small changes make big differences.  How did a lot of us get to be overweight?  Was it because of overeating by a lot every day?  Was it because of overeating by a little every day?  Well, it all comes down to habits.  Sometimes we consume foods with little to no thought about their calories amounts and some we consume thinking they really make no difference because their calories are so tiny.  Take, for example, a teaspoon of sugar which is only 15 calories.  What is 15 calories you might ask?  Well, offhand it doesn't seem like much to even think about or consider...  But, for instance, say a person likes to have 2 coffees in the mornings and only puts one little teaspoon of sugar in each coffee each morning.  Well...big deal...30 calories of sugar total for 2 coffees...what is that???  I will tell you what 30 calories a day EXTRA over the daily amount of maintain calories is...  30 calories a day X 30 days (1 month app.) equals 900 calories.  1  month of 900 extra calories X 12 months (a year) equals 10,800 calories.  10,800 calories divided by 3500 calories (1 pound) equals a little over 3 pounds gained in one year if those 2 little teaspoons of sugar are consumed daily over the amount of calories consumed for maintenance.  Just sayin'...something to think about...

Hope you are having a good day.  Every day with our Lord and Saviour Jesus is a good day!

Love, Maria

Don't mess with my coffee, Maria!!!!

Just kidding -- believe it or not, your post was so timely, as I was thinking about the very same thing this morning while making MY coffee!

In fact, you were probably posting this at the very same time I was making my cup, thinking about the "hidden" extra calories in every cup.

I can't drink black coffee straight. I have tried it, but it's too hard on the stomach. It would be great if I could. So all I can do is try to be aware of the calories.

I do find that often, I can curb hunger with a cup of coffee. It might be the extra calories in the cream that hold me. Plus the caffeine, of course.

Maria7 on 09/12/2019:
Yes, I know what you mean about drinking drinks instead of eating, to curb hunger. In cases like that, you would probably come out ahead depending on what you were avoiding eating. I do the same thing also.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 09/12/2019:
Yes,sipping my coffee right now with you!

I was reading a book a few months ago, it was all about the "little things" that if we don't pay attention to, turn into big things that either help or hurt us, but rarely keep things the same. I believe the book was called "The Compound Effect," meaning that over time the little choices compound in either a helpful or hurtful way in our lives and it's up to us to take notice and change a thing or two.

Yes, and also doing LITTLE things each day can help us also..the little things we decide to do more of, like myself waking up on time now and using some of the morning to do some short exercises, keeps my body in motion, which i'm thinking is more healthy than laying in bed listening to the radio - when i can be up riding a stationary bike, moving, watching tv. i'm trying to find ways to be more active in the time i have outside of work, but still taking some time to relax. ;)

Maria7 on 09/12/2019:
You are sooo RIGHT! There are things we can do in moving to make up for extra calories.

grannyannie on 09/12/2019:
I can drink coffee in many ways - black, cappuccino, latte. I was never more than 10 lbs overweight until my late 30's, and the older I get the harder it is to get it off and keep it off.

Have a good day, Maria!

Maria7 on 09/12/2019:
Same for me, Annie...Late 30's started gaining weight...was not overweight until then.

BearCountryGG on 09/12/2019:
Weight just creeps on....and as the years go by.....it's even faster because our metabolism slows down......

Hello to you and wishing you a good day.

Scale weighed me at 151 today so I will not change 'official' weight of 150 above that I have mostly been maintaining.  I am still dealing with sinuses over here along with general achiness all over.  Headache, muscle aches, dizziness, and although my ears are ringing loudly, my sinuses seem to be a little clearer today.  Smile.

Hope you are having a good day.  Every day with our Lord and Saviour Jesus is a good day!

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Hello to you and wishing you a good day.  It is sunny and hot here in SC but typical for this time of year.

I am dealing with sinus pain from allergies that began yesterday after sneezing a lot over the past few days.  Hubby has been dealing with it, too.  Ragweed season no less.

I am struggling to maintain 150 after staying at a motel during Hurricane Dorian and eating snack foods I usually do not allow.  I think sodium is a big player in being up slightly over 150.  After I get back to where I was again, I am going to try for 145.

Today I have been working some, then resting some.  Tidying our bedroom that had become cluttered.  I also mopped again today, as I did also yesterday, and vacummed to get rid of any pollen that may have come into the house.  I got up a lot of clothing from the biggest closet and took to the nursing home yesterday to be given out.  Still more to do.  Why do most of us keep so much stuff?  If it is going to be stored for years and not used, what good is it?  We are simply cheating ourselves out of space needed for useful things or at the very least, space to help have better peace of mind not looking at so much clutter.  My Hubby advised me to work on it a little along and along, so that is what I am doing and that is better than thinking I have to accomplish it all at one time.

Hope you are having a good day.  Every day with our Lord and Saviour Jesus is a good day!

Love, Maria

Allergies are kicking up here in Michigan too maria.....cooler weather will take care of that soon. I agree...the cleaning of closets can take awhile...it took me several days to clean out my closet....laundry room storage areas are next...and they will take a few days as well......we didn't fill them in 1 day...so it will take a little time to clear them out.

Maria7 on 09/11/2019:
Oh, I am looking forward to cooler weather, Linda. LOVE the fall weather! You are doing so wonderful in finishing clearing out your closets and moving on to the cabinets in your laundry room...that will also be next on my agenda after I finish this closet I have been working on and 2 more. Have a happy day.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 09/10/2019:
Ragweed is the allergen i do not suffer from, but pollen kills me!

i hope you feel better soon.

all your cleaning is making me want to clean, but motivation is lacking. i think i'll do more major cleaning in the colder months when i'm home more often.

Maria7 on 09/11/2019:
Sounds like a good plan. Hope you have a good day.

Donkey on 09/10/2019:
See my comment to Bear about allergies. For what they are, they certainly do cause a lot of discomfort in one's life. I hope you feel better soon.

Maria7 on 09/11/2019:

I also want to donate a lot of things, included a few stuffed animals i randomly have.

Maria7 on 09/09/2019:
With it getting near Christmas in a few months, now is a good time to do it. One suggestion...Nursing home residents LOVE stuffed animals, should you decide you might like to go into one and simply give them out. Lots of the residents get no visitors and a little 'animal friend' would make their day.

Hello to you.

Scale read 150 again today...not complaining.

Although Hurricane Dorian has been downgraded from a cat 5 to a cat 4, with sustained winds decreased from 185 to 150, it appears to be still headed our way and our Governor has ordered evacuations of counties that will be most affected by it as it comes up the coast of SC.  Hubby and I are considering evacuating as well, altho we are not directly on the coast, as we are not too far from it.

happy-1 on 09/02/2019:
What do you do for safety in something like this?

Donkey on 09/02/2019:
I'm very worried for all the people in the Bahamas. It's like the hurricane decided to just park itself at the island, maybe for a vacay stay, before moving on. At least it's back down to 4, and I'm glad to hear that the US Coast Guard is on its way to lend assistance.

Hopefully, it won't hit our coast too hard, if it's spending all of its energy in the Bahamas...
