For my activity lately:
Sat & Sun: Nothing
Mon: Circ Aer Wkt using NordicTrack 12 min/1.2 mi
Tues: Nothing
Wed: Yard work/mowing/weedeating 3 hrs
Thur: Nothing

Days 19-24 were 0 for 2 for my routine. (Again good breakfast/walk constitutes the "routine.")

Glad I got the yard work done, but I certainly paid for doing it all at once yesterday, low back-wise. Also glad I did my circuit on Monday--the easiest thing to get out of. I didn't weigh in on Tuesday, but I got on the scale this morning. I'm well on my way to putting on 10 pounds from what's above. Normally I report what I see, but this time I'm going to bust my butt to get back to that and then to move forward. Sometimes this all just is really really really old--the counting foolishness. I consciously stopped counting cals/food for the last 4 or 5 days (not writing it down in my little notebook either). Starting back to it today.

It's still amazing the amount of food I can put away with no ill effects--fatty food, junk food, you name it. And I paced myself so to speak. I wouldn't call it a binge by any stretch, just a few days of eating whatever I wanted. Probably what I should have done around birthday time, but was in that mindset/mode of counting everything thinking I was in "control." These days always happen for me eventually. And now I hope I can get back into regularly exercising (maybe even jogging regularly), eating properly so that I can start to get back into the swing of things. Again!

Plan for today: Circuit workout, NTrack, walk

Have a good day!

I know what you mean. It's unbelievable how much I put away just eating "normally" - I'm not even talking about a full-fledged binge where I'm trying to pack in all the goodies before I return to my senses. I remember when I first started counting calories I was amazed to see that I was up at around 2400 a day - and this was after I'd been "dieting" for several weeks!! I don't know what my regular calorie intake must have been before that, but I think 2400 is about the lowest I'd ever go without trying. And it's well into the 3000+ range before I even feel like I'm eating a lot.

But yes, it does get annoying and just tiring to do all this counting. I just can't trust myself at all if I don't. But sometimes I don't bother to be very precise about it.

Thanks for your comment regarding the oatmeal. I make mine in the microwave too! But just the old-fashioned rolled oats at the moment. I'm planning to look for the steel-cut ones in London because they're not available here.

hollybelle on 03/30/2007:
I know what you mean low back syndrome after yard work. Yikes! But I love working in the yard - kind of instant gratification! As usual - good work!

greengirl on 03/30/2007:
I was planning on tidying up my little garden soon too, but with my recent bout of back pain I'm going to be careful. I have also been eating stuff that i really shouldnt but without feeling I have been bingeing. Its amazing how soon the cals mount up. today has been a case in point!

geevee on 03/30/2007:
You shouldn't have reminded me, though yes! I WAS fully aware of that dreaded TEN pound gain! What to do... What to do!

At the moment, I feel like I've totally lost it and gone astray.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 03/30/2007:
yep, they were the vending machine peanut butter on cheese crackers! you were doing so great with exercise a couple months ago! i know you can get back into it!

Justine6Robert3 on 03/30/2007:
I got way off track today also. I think its my menstrual cycle approaching but all I wanted to do is eat today. I think I had my highest calorie day yet at just under 2500!! Now I feel bloated and gross! Not only did I eat to much but alot of it wasn't healthy, I don't think my body is to pleased right now. I definetly feel physically better when I make healthier choices!!

So you got a little off track but your back and I know you can get back into the swing of things!! I was wondering where you had been, I missed your quotes!!

Enjoy your week-end!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 04/01/2007:
Maybe get more fiber into your diet...then you'll start to feel the food and not be able to put it away in your stomach as easily...just a thought! Your ideas were well taken by me...i really shouldn't be rehearsing with her...it can't be good for my ego. but, i don't have a choice because i don't know any other tuba players...but, i do have the choice to not partake in the group - but, i'll suffer for the time being...or, i'll just forget about everything and think of myself as a better person for moving on with life despite past feelings towards people.

Soon2BThin on 04/01/2007:
Wow, you sound exactly like me right now!! It's amazing how much I can eat at one time. Time for us to get serious! Back to the "counting"! Have a great week!

Days 14-17 were 0 for 2 for my routine. On Day 18 (yesterday) I did have a good breakfast. No walk. I did better with my water. BTW, the routine is Good Breakfast & Walk.

I guess I've gotten so far off the (not so) beaten path. And it seems like I haven't made an entry in forever. My birthday was okay. I think it just became another festive occasion that lingered too many extra days foodwise. Trying to get back on track with everything now!

It comes once a year and here it is again-- My Birthday!

Days 12 & 13 were 0 for 2 for my routine. I shall be skipping my weigh-in tomorrow. Today I will not be one to hold back with my food choices--pretty sure of that!

Though I haven't been awfully committed to working out lately, I will most certainly get my scheduled circuit in today!

Two elderly couples were enjoying friendly conversation when one of the men asked the other, "Fred, how was the memory clinic you went to last month?"

"Outstanding," Fred replied. "They taught us all the latest psychological techniques--visualization, association--it made a huge difference for me."

"That's great! What was the name of the clinic?"

Fred went blank. He thought and thought, but couldn't remember. Then a smile broke across his face and he asked, "What do you call that flower with the long stem and thorns?"

"You mean a rose?"

"Yes, that's it!" He turned to his wife . . . "Rose, what was the name of that clinic?"

Day 10 was 0 for 2 for my routine. It was just another crummy day. I thought I was going to like DST coming earlier, but all it's done is to throw a monkey wrench into my sleep pattern earlier and with vengeance it seems, which simply sucks!

It's a good thing I'm such a simpleton that counting days brings me back to make entries here, because this is just about the time (attitude-wise) I tend to chuck it all--for several weeks and undermine the about 13 pounds I've lost in about a year. Funny, but 13# is just about what I'd like to lose (and keep off!) in the coming months.

I'm going to do what I have to today to get out of the red. It's very disheartening to fu*k up so many days in a row.

Hi Biscotti,

I completely forgot about answering your coffee question. So sorry. Anyway, I have a small Krups, the best make I've found. In the past I had others, but Krups lasts the longest. I also have a Braun coffee grinder. I used to buy the high priced brands but found out that Folger's French Roast suits me just fine. I put the regular grind into the grinder. Sometimes I buy a Latin brand called Aguila which is already ground and then don't have to use the grinder. I can't imagine my day without starting it off with a hearty big cup of expresso. I always drink the equivalent of a full coffee pot of the Krups machine which is more than a regular cup. Half the time I'll have another half pt. That's it. I don't drink coffee at any other time.

Since we left the age of sun dials centuries ago, I don't see any logical reason for an intrusive call to prayers. With everything else that a cell phone can do, why in the world can't these devout people set the alarm or even look at their watch? Why barge into everyone else's world? It might bring fond memories of childhood to BTC but when I experienced the racket, I cut short my vacation in Morocco by more than a week. I HAD TO get away from the noise.

AS for talking to the manager at the Biltmore, that's precisely what I had in mind to do. I know I'll get nowhere with the people hired to sign people up. Worse, that $300 charge is not an increase in fee. That has already taken place. It used to be $850 or so. Now it's $1200 PLUS another $300! I wonder if the membership is down since the prices went up. How many people can afford that price? The only good part is that if I decided to pay the price, I'd be sure NOT to miss! I'd have to really start again in earnest to justify paying so much.

I'm in the process of revving myself up for the ordeal.

borntocry on 03/17/2007:
Hehe, gotta love geevee's sarcastic reference to me in her comment...

This is the time of the year that I generally chuck it all and gain about 10 lb too. It's been a trend for the last three years or so (since I joined this site, really). I guess I do tend to go on holiday at this time of the year but it's not just that as much as it's my defeatist attitude towards it that makes me throw in the towel. Or do you think we get too confident about keeping off the weight we've lost?

Well, whatever the reason, it's time for heightened vigilance. We've got to stay in the game, and hope that by the time our motivation returns we won't have set ourselves back too much!

Oh, and thanks for the comment you left me. You're right, there's certainly no such thing as sexual harassment training here. Although honestly I don't get the feeling that the workplace is crawling with sexual predators as one might think here in France. People certainly do make flirtatious remarks and jokes probably more often than they could in America or England. But it seems to be quite harmless.

You were also right about missing out on that lunch at the Italian restaurant - that's exactly the kind of thing which would normally lead to a huge binge later. But I knew I had to watch out for that because otherwise I'd really kick myself for not going to the restaurant.

And speaking of binges, I read the article you posted the other day. It was interesting to read that there might be gene which cause some people to feel hungrier than others. I've definitely noticed that I seem to feel hungrier than other people, and I never get full. Although I think some people are a little too eager to give up responsibility for their actions. So having the gene for hunger means that one doesn't necessarily have less will-power than others. But maybe people with less will-power just don't have the gene for will-power, so it's not their fault either! Really, we could blame everything we do or don't do on our genes.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 03/17/2007:

For my activity: Nothing

Day 9 was 0 for 2 for my routine. Didn't get in my circuit--was just too exhausted. I could have pushed myself and gotten a little of it done, but I thought that a good night's sleep would serve me better today to get in the full and much more effective workout. And I ate nearly a thousand calories worth of Poppycock.

Why do I buy things like this thinking I can be sensible and eat just a little at a time and then not even come close to that. It's one of the most calorie-dense things I know of for how much I can actually eat of it--hope that makes sense:-) (And I probably could have eaten even more if I'd bought the sale version.)

It's the same story with homemade cookies.

It's good to have my entries from the past. It allows me to look back to just a year ago to see how well I was doing compared to lately;-) And that with a little effort I can actually get to where I seem to want to be. And that I haven't blown ALL my hard work to hell!

Some days all I can do is look at the big picture and see just where I've come from. We're all struggling to some extent. Somehow though I know if I look away and let up on the neck of the beast I'm now barely standing on--it will certainly come back to bite my (smaller than what I started out with) ass!

Also here's a version of an article/study to a dead link from way back when: Study: Genes may be at fault for binge-eating (Binge-eaters who say they can't help it may be right). Keep in mind the article is now 4 years old. Nevertheless it's interesting.

Hmmm. Yes, I also hate to think that I have become such an obsessive binge eater that there are some foods I just can't have in the house. But I think the thing to remember here is that there are some things, like french fries, full-fat ice-cream, etc (and I think your poppycock may fall into this category) that are so calorie-dense (and nutritionally empty), that they really don't belong in anyone's shopping cart. It's not just a question of how much you can eat of them - how much is one supposed to eat of them? Even a small serving is pretty high-calorie. It's not like chocolate where you could conceivably expect to be satisfied after just a tiny little piece.

Anyway, thanks for your comment. I'm more inclined to your way of thinking - the genetic advantage applies more to sprinters than to long distance runners, and probably doesn't really have all that much bearing for us amateurs anyway. If I really wanted to compete at a high level I'd need to double or triple my training volume, regardless of genetics, and obviously I'm not interested in that. I like to see myself improve at what I do - that's all!

And on that note, thanks for encouraging me on the weight-training - that's another area in which I'd like to see improvements, but I certainly won't if I don't keep it up more regularly!

Hi Biscotti,

I'll be sure to microwave the cabbage next time I get up the energy to make cabbage rolls. Not that it's that taxing; just annoying, but so worth the effort when I consider how many rolls I made andhow many meals/snacks I got out of the batch. Also, your tip and BTC's plus Working It's idea of using sausage. Since I've eaten cabbage rolls so seldom, I never had any stuffed with sausage but that sounds very appealing.

For my activity: Jog 10 min/Walk 30 min

Day 2 was 2 for 2 routinewise--brkfst & walk done! Didn't do the NTrack as scheduled. Oh well, easy come--easy go!

But, I ate a ridiculous 700 calories worth of snack crackers--carefully doled out serving by serving. Had I not kept count I would have surely underreported the calories. Sick!

Those crackers sat around unopened for the longest time and once the box was opened they became a mini-obsession as bad as cookies or brownies. I bought them to use in a recipe over the holidays, which I never made. You just want to get rid of them, but I'm not one to throw unspoiled food away. And I could have just kept eating them--they aren't one bit satisfying or filling. Sick I tell ya'!

Last night I was able to jog in a tank top. It was about 65F (18C), no wind, but someone was burning a really stinky log (perfume-like) in their fireplace. That odor mixed with the faint scent of a skunk could have been quite nauseating, but I survived:-)

My lone human encounter on the jog/walk:
Guy in driveway: Evening!
Me: Hidy!

Plan for today: Circuit workout, walk, NTrack

Have a good day!

Oh, crackers are deadly for me, too. It's way too easy to eat way too much. I also often buy stuff for a recipe and then either never end up making it or scale it down so much that there's tons of ingredients left. Like I have all kinds of nuts and dried fruits left over from the holiday season. And NINE types of cheese in the refrigerator!! I don't even want to think about it.

So people greet you on your evening jogs. Over here I'm lucky if a passing runner returns my smile (forget about the non-runners! they hate us!). I can only remember two who have ever smiled back, and one was clearly American (shorts, baseball cap...).

Thanks for the comment you left me. My initial thought was, "But I wasn't running that much last year!" I guess the problem was that I was running on both Saturday and Sunday - generally quite a hard workout on both days - and doing very little during the week. A typical "weekend warrior", as they say. Great for time and convenience, not so great on the joints, I guess.

And yes, the medical certificate is a French thing. It's just so that the race organisers aren't liable if any of us drop dead during it. Whereas it's almost impossible to sue a doctor here (as mine scathingly reminded me when she thought I might have a pulmonary embolism last year) so I guess they don't mind signing the certificates after a perfunctory blood pressure test.

You know, it did occur to me that my calf pain started at around the same time as the biking. Do you think it could be related? I'll bet it's because I haven't been stretching before/after the bike. I'd better stop being so lax about that!

I didn't realise that your back problems had such an early onset. I can imagine how depressing that must have been for you. It was so bad that you couldn't even sleep through the night?! I do wish doctors would be a little more sympathetic to most people's desire to avoid surgery. I guess they've seen so much of it that to them it's nothing. To us it's a pretty scary, not to mention costly and inconvenient, experience. My Dad was also told he'd need knee surgery and would never play tennis again (even WITH the knee surgery). He started taking glucosamine and switched to doubles tennis instead of singles. He's still playing ten years later and doing great!

I have been grabbing a littel too much of certain things that have been laying around for months, too. It's so easy to do. Had to look and see your bio for where you are located (I forget sometimes) saw Texas and then understood the expression - "Hidy"!! I think I have said that myself here in KY at one time or another (tee-hee).

Sounds like beautiful jogging/walking weather, except for the smelly part!! You have a way with words biscotti, you often give me a giggle, which is always a good thing!!

I often put snack crackers in my daughters lunch but I have learned to pack her lunch right after I have eaten so I'm not so tempted to eat a few! I don't give her alot only 1 serving (usually 8 crackers) I'm struggling with my daughter because she is an even pickier eater than myself! I used to live on peanut butter sandwiches when I was her age and she would do the same but they aren't allowed to bring anything with peanuts to school.

Hope you have a great day tomorrow, I'm so envious of your mild weather, enjoy!!

I can also get carried away with snack crackers! I've somehow managed to stay away from them for the most part, they are very addictive! I got in a really bad habit after I had my son of grabbing crackers and munching them all day long because I just didn't seem to find the time to prepare myself a decent meal with a toddler and an infant. I know, it was lazy, I should have made the time but I didn't. Now that I know how many calories are in them I can see why I had trouble loosing weight after baby my second pregnancy!!!

Justine6Robert3 on 03/08/2007:
Hee, hee, what the heck did I do there!! Somehow I started typing in the middle of what I had already typed and now all of the paragraphs are mixed up!! Oh well, hope it makes sense to you still!! I think my brain is shutting down, its time for me to get my butt to bed!!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 03/09/2007:
crackers = one of my own poorest choices!!! at least you kept track, something I always do, no matter what!
