Day 359 turned out to be a pretty good day.

Yep, that was running I did yesterday. Decided to go ahead and take the time to do a similar plan as I did when I started jogging. It can only help. And I thought I would feel like I was plodding through quicksand for the 30 min or so that it took. Nope, it went very quickly!

A torn jacket is soon mended, but hard words bruise the heart of a child. --Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

For my activity: Airdyne 11 min/2.7 mi

Day 358 was typical of my days of late--sucked! It's getting old. And, no surprise, I'm up on my weigh-in. Four out of the last eight days over 3000 calories. Not doing measurements even though I planned on it. I can plan for a better day tomorrow--this one's nearly shot as well--that's all! If you're tired of reading sucky diary entries from me, well . . . I'm tired of writing them. So tomorrow won't be sucky--okay! And if they day itself turns out sucky, I'll just put a joke up along with my numbers--haha!

Operation Virtual Tummy Tuck :: The gap is closing--I'm about 2.5 inches away from being able to button the really old size 8 jeans.

The Airdyne exercise was yet another "test," but on this one I pushed myself like a peddling fool. It yielded me a "Good" on the scale for that test. This was the first time I'd done this particular one.

It's a good time for me to put up or shut up. Today. No more pussyfooting around!

Plan for today: NTrack, jog/walk

Thanks so much for your encouragement. I see you've done really well in your weight loss good for you! My BP today was 159/89 and my doctor about hit the roof. That's high especially since I'm on meds. Now he's thinking I have a thyroid issue which could be the reason for weight gain plus a lot of my other health issues!

Alright! I love the enthusiastic vibes I'm getting from this entry. I'll be looking forward to tomorrows un-sucky entry! :-) And you're almost into your size 8 jeans! That's wonderful!

Day 357 was so-so. I skipped most of my activity except I did my 12-min test and it was telling. Of course I didn't push myself either. I only made it .9 mile and that's with absolutely no walking during the test--Fair to Poor. In 30 days I'd like to see it improve to 1.1-1.2 mi, which would be "Good" for my age group. I really want to work on this.

Hi biscotti,

Good for you, girl! To be honest, I was actually planning to blow off my weight-lifting last night too. But after leaving you that comment, I knew you were going to go for your jog. So I had to fulfil my end of the deal, or live with the shame! I'm going to do the rest of my weights tonight...

Nice to know you are a Smiths fan. Morrissey was born in Davyhulme, Thats about five or six miles away from where I am, so he is very popular in the local area. Glad to see you have great taste in music LOL !!

geevee on 02/19/2007:
Hi Biscotti - I understand the point the book is making about keeping favorite foods around and eating them in moderation in order to avoid the feeling of denial and the resultant destructive binges. In fact, I did this months ago and have been fairly successful, but as I said, when the rare "carb" day comes, it's murder!

In the last week or two both the NYTimes and Newsweek have had articles on bingeing, and their definitions coincide with mine. I don't binge, but on occasion I do eat more than usual but not to the extent of feeling overstuffed and guilty and adding up to several thousand calories. Even on a "heavy" eating day for me, I am in control and doling out the goodies, not mindlessly stuffing handfuls of food in my mouth and eating non-stop. I think it's a problem for everyone who enjoys rich, high calorie, nutritious food like nuts, PNB, etc. who don't want to overdo it. I love chips of any kind but would never buy them, even at a fantastic sale price which I've seen and ignored. I only indulge in them at a party at someone else's house.

Hi biscotti,

I just read your comment to geevee about how you can't eat peanut butter straight out of the jar. Well, you know, neither could I, until I joined this site! I used to think it was crazy how Runner could eat peanut butter straight from the jar! And then geevee said something about how it's an American institution... anyway, I decided to give it a try, and now look at me! I couldn't keep it in the house for a long time. But recently I bought a jar of the organic kind, which I don't find as tempting, and did pretty well. I wonder if that means I'm strong enough for the commercial variety?

Thanks for all of your comments!!! Sorry, but I will definitely continue listing my food intakes! lol! I always wondered why you didn't, actually! I'll look into seeing if that book is in the libary near me! I also don't exercise when it gets too late!

You see, I do like junk food, but not as much as healthy food. Sometimes, I just think of it as poison. Tonight, i decided to have a salad with dinner and it made me feel so good that I did, instead of just those shirataki noodles and egg or yogurt. I do not feel that any food is off-limits. However, those sugary, unhealthy foods are still too tempting to eat in moderation. My body craves the feeling it gets from a sugar rush! so, i'm still working on that! thank you for the comments!

Day 351 was good. Down on my weigh-in today. Skipping measurements until next week. Still ate like there was no tomorrow. Not a binge at all, still the calorie and fat counts are sinful! I need some regulation. I'll get it going here soon I'm sure.

Found some pants that are (to the best of my knowledge) 15 years old. They're size 8s. I can get them over my hips with ease and up to my waist, but then . . . well I've got a green mark on my abdomen showing where it would need to be cut out and resized to be able to zip them.

So here begins "Operation Virtual Tummy Tuck"--hahaha! I did this a few years ago with a different pair of pants. It's just a little fun, motivational exercise. Though I remember being able to wear these pants so many years ago, I'd rather remember when I WASN'T able to wear them and why. They're not worn out and they're not an odd style or fabric so maybe I'll be able to zip 'em and button 'em soon:-)

To Smiley2's comment about being calm about success and failure. I think it comes from low expectations. I originally didn't think I'd lose weight when I was at 189--and over time with all my ups and downs I've just gotten a little (maybe too) philosophical about this. Also, I don't use future happenings as a reason to lose X amount of weight, because that doesn't work for me, and I've seen so many people do just such a thing and then they gain it back. So I just try to go with the flow in my own way. I don't see me getting back to the 170s, for instance, unless something drastic and unforeseen happens, snowballs and then something else keeps me from doing meaningful exercise.

In other words I'm happy if I don't have neck and back pain, if I can do my weight training and a fair amount of other exercise regularly, and if I can more or less eat what I want (within reason). Where I am is more than I ever hoped for. On the other hand I could use a dose of reality to get me just past that "overweight BMI" limit and stay there. In due course I'm sure, but I obviously need to step it up!

Plan for today: NTrack, jog/walk

That "future happenings" thing never works for me either. In fact it almost seems to work AGAINST me. Maybe it adds to the stress - I don't know. Slow and steady really does seem to be the best way. You get used to eating and exercising the way you have to in order to maintain your loss. And I think you get used to it mentally too. Otherwise you're just waiting to gain it back, and that's inevitably what happens.

moody on 02/14/2007:
Wow..size 8's that are so close to fitting!! Only in my dreams!!

You have a great attitude, and I love that you know yourself so well, what works and doesn't work for you!!

Slow and steady is right..you will do this!

geevee on 02/14/2007:
Your 8's remind me of my 6's I used to try to get into. I had gotten about as far as you have with the 8's, and then I lost it! The 6's are still there waiting for me. Maybe this time I'll be able to wear them.

No, no. Too much hubris. How dare I be so bold!

Years ago I had traveled around S. America in an ugly pair of rust colored cords that at the time I liked. I don't know what size they were, but I weighed about 140 at the time. It wasn't long before I outgrew them, but because I liked them, put them away for "later".

Years passed and I joined DD's. One day I happened to come across the cords, tried them on and lo and behold! they were TOO BIG!

Did that make me feel good! I wore them anyway for one day, thinking all the time about what I had achieved, and then took them off and gave them to Goodwill. That felt SO good!

So yeah, I know what you're talking about.

greengirl on 02/14/2007:
I threw away a load of smaller clothes last year that I had packed away in a suitcase because I thought they would never fit me again. Now I wish I had kept them as half of them would fit me now and the rest would have given me a little incentive!!! I wish I had something I could try on like your pants, just so I could gauge how I was doing. Instead it costing me a fortune in new stuff !! Damn!!

Days 349 & 350 were just okay.

I was up on my weigh-in, which will be my last daily weigh-in until further notice--it's not working like I thought it might, which was to remind me to pay more attention to what I put in my mouth because I would be weighing daily. So I'll go back to Tuesday weigh-ins (and if I feel like it, Saturday weigh-ins). My lackadaisical attitude toward food is not going to get me anywhere. I'm not quite back to where I was pre-January, but if I don't start nipping this in the bud--I will be.

I did need some break from exercise so that was good. I made a huge batch of Blueberry Muffins with a ton of butter--froze a bunch, ate about four and gave some to a neighbor. They were homemade-cupcake size, so that's not too bad. And I made some mini ones for an experiment--they were good too:-)

Wrote down my food in my little notebook--no Fitday the last couple of days. I probably ate about 2500 calories each day.

In case you were still curious about the diapers the alleged outlaw astronaut wore. I don't seek this stuff out--it was on the front page of Google News (my home page) when I rebooted my computer. It quickly satisfied all my curiosity. I'm kind of concerned that NASA may be using possibly obsolete diaper technology:-) On the other hand they're saving taxpayer $$$--hahaha!

Here's an excerpt: "In the 1990s, these orbiting bedpans were exchanged for adult diapers laced with a liquid-absorbing chemical called sodium polyacrylate. A NASA spokeswoman said the official brand used now is Absorbencies, manufactured by a company that has folded.

Fortunately, NASA owns a huge stockpile. The agency snapped up 3,200 of the diapers about 15 years ago, the spokeswoman said, and "we still have about a third of the supply left."

On space shuttle missions, each crew member receives three diapers for launch, reentry and a spare in case reentry has to be waved off and tried later.

At that rate, the supply should last for years to come, allowing astronauts to stay secure in the knowledge that in space, no one can hear you pee."

I seen that story on the news with the "astronaut love triangle". I was also rather amused by a grown lady wearing diapers rather than stop to use a rest room!! Love does make people behave strangely sometimes!!

Great job on the exercise! Just how old is that Ntrack?! Is it older than my manual treadmill that I got when I was 18 yrs old (1994) hehe!!

I also don't mind the jumping spiders, they are so little and we have so many of them that I think I've gotten used to them. The brown recluse spiders and the black widows are different. I guess those types of things come with living in Texas.

I watch a show that I think is called "Flip that House" and it has a couple who sell houses in Texas. They had moved into this house and their son was playing out back and ran into a rattlesnake, YIKES! I love snakes, however we don't have to many dangerous ones here. My daughter had a boa constrictor wrapped around her at a reptile themed birthday party. It was so cool, she was giggling her head off, she thought it was great! I would have held it also but there was to many kids waiting to touch it:)

I recieved an e-mail a few months ago showing a bite from a brown recluse, it was really nasty!! The thought of them hiding in your clothes or shoes really gives me the creeps!

I wish I had the will power to only weigh myself once a week. I know I'm far too obsessed with the scale, I weigh myself every morning. I don't think it's very healthy for me to be so focussed on weighing myself all the time but I just can't seem to help myself!

As for the weight gain, tomorrow is another day and I you can do this! You have been working on this for so long your bound to have a couple of bad days here and there. Your doing great! Thanks for the amusing info on the astronaut diapers!

My body's latest trick is to allow me to fall asleep for awhile, and then I wake up and toss and turn for hours. Annoying!

Son Jim solved the sleep problem by going into baking (with his MBA!) He starts work at Panera at 10pm and works until 6. Then, around 7am he's really ready to sleep and can for a good 5 hours. He decided to go with the flow and not fight his body clock anymore. The funny thing is that several other "bakers" he works with have the same problem. Interesting solution, I must say!

Cheese--milk's leap toward immortality. --Clifton Fadiman

For my activity: Circ Aer Wkt using Airdyne (46 min/10.4 mi)

Day 347 was good. My weight's up a half-pound. Again.

Okay this entry marks the last time I "talk" about my weight (for awhile). I'm not going to bring it to attention in other words:-) I'll continue to track it here as I go, but I'm finding it awfully boring. I know my activity and continued progress with weight training and jogging is what I'd rather focus on. And staying healthy while doing it.

Of course I need to cut calories--I just haven't been ready to be that focused yet. I'll do that, but my #1 fear is feeling deprived, even if it's perceived deprivation. It's a recipe for disaster for me. I guess my #2 fear with moving in the direction of 140 is continuing to cut calories to maintain.

Having said that, I'm going to focus on losing 1 pound/week, which, if all goes well, will put me at 140 in early June. Last year about this time I was trying to figure out how to get out of the rut of 169ish--and I'm thrilled I'm not doing it again this year. It's time to move forward!

Do I know all about maintaining!!! I didn't do it for very long at all. That I was able to stay within 5lbs. of my goal weight for a year, in retrospect, was a sheer miracle. It's a slippery path, Biscotti. You can never let up. Here I am in the mid-130's struggling! If I ever break into the 120's again, I'll feel like one of those emaciated runway models. There are NO short cuts.

Yeah, I don't talk about my weight much either. Only if it's bizarrely high or low, and even then it's more because I feel like it would be hypocritical to pretend that I haven't even noticed it.

I know what you mean about the fear of deprivation. That always used to stand in my way. I used to worry that if I let myself get too hungry, it would lead to a huge binge (which it often did in the past). But I think I was using deprivation as an excuse for this kind of behaviour. It was almost like I accepted that as an inevitable part of dieting. You're so right about the notion of "perceived" deprivation. If I'm "on a diet", well then I MUST be deprived, right? I try to banish those thoughts from my mind. You know how people sometimes say that they're so busy or having so much fun that they "forget" to eat? Well, I try to do the same. I try not to think about food. That's a hard one for me because what with my interest in cooking and all, I'm OBSESSED with food. But I try to keep my mind off it. Focus on work, running, spring-cleaning, etc.

As for the motion-control shoes, the jury is still out. Apparently knee problems can be caused by over-pronation, and the motion-control shoes will correct that. I don't know if I have that problem, but supposedly up to 80% of female runners do (this sounds hard to believe, I know - I have my doubts too) so I thought I'd give them a try. So far I feel like I've noticed a slight improvement but that could be due to the glucosamine which I just started taking, or the placebo effect...

"Long term maintenance guru". HYSTERICAL! Oh, if it were only true.

After 2hrs. perparing the eggplant lasagna that wonderful idea of having a clean floor has fallen by the wayside. Another day perhaps. And here I felt so motivated early in the morning when I had the zip to ride my bike. I think the lesson is that if anything is going to be done, it has to be done early.

I have tried 20min. cleaning "spress" and made fantastic progress. After 7 days, working in just one area, I could definitely see a marked improvement, and then I got bored with it. I'm sorry, I just don't find housework interesting and I'm not compelled to do it. And to think how slothful I felt when I cut down from daily cleaning for at least three hours when my kids were young to 5hrs. once a week.

Now it only happens when the house gets really dirty. No big deal. Tomorrow is another day.

Thank-you for the comment. Yes, the doctor did say its a similiar reaction to your lymph nodes in you neck swelling up when you get sick. No, there are definetly no ants living here in the winter, however they will be back as soon as the weather warms up.

Luckily, our house backs onto water (man made by our builder) and we have crazy amounts of toads hopping around out back that take care of lots of the bugs, especially the mosquitos!! I know alot of woman don't like frogs, snakes, lizards and reptile like creatures but I guess I'm "unique" I love them. My father only had daughters and we used to go camping alot so he made sure my sister and I were not afraid of many creepy crawlers. We even had pet snakes, tree crabs, rats, etc. I had a 5 ft pet Iguana when I got married. My weakness is spiders, I'm a total girl around them, YUCK! I don't want my kids to fear them so I don't react the way I want to when the kids are around. My daughter loves all "nature" and she saves bugs, toads and everything. She says we can't kill or hurt "nature", she's so cute!!

As for you feeling bored and being afraid to cut your calories because your afraid you'll feel deprived, I know what you mean. I'm very new to all of this calorie counting and eating healthy. I'm afraid I will get bored over time and binge on all the wrong food. I'm trying to still allow myself to have small amounts of the things I crave. I think if I have just a little and its earlier in the day its not so bad. I think eating the "junk food" at night obviously does more damage. Ofcourse that's exactly when I want munchies is in the evening!!

Anyway, I don't think you should deprive yourself of anything or you will end up bingeing!! I'm sure you already know this you have been at this for alot longer than myself! I think your doing great with your calories and your regular exercise! I guess you'll know when your ready to make the change and cut your calories. Slow and steady, right?! I know you can get to those 140's by June!!

Borntocry is very right, if you keep busy, you will have less time to think about food!
