Day 308 was the last day of 2006--a good year for me for weight loss. I was at 170 on 1 Jan, so some hard work really got me to a point where I could breathe easier. That's just about 17 pounds down for the year. And I feel good for continuing progress in the coming year!

I clocked a 2-mile route for a minimum daily walk.

Plan for today: NordicTrack, walk

Have a lovely day and take good care of yourselves!

You're maintaining in the low 150's right now instead of the 170's - that's a huge difference. You should definitely feel proud of yourself. Good work!

You have had a really good year with very steady progress. Well done!!

I do not think that my backyard is any better than anyones and I wasn't criticizing anyone, I was stating my opinion and it wasn't criticism. It was done because there have been messages posted that quite clearly state that persons are having problems with those behaviors. And while I will support everyone on the good things that they do...I will not post a 'Great Day!' message to an aneorexic who posts that they did 5 hours of exercise and ate 400 calories. My whole point being that I will say nothing and this is why and I will continue to support the good things that people do for themselves. Just as I am not going to tell those of us who have issues with eating too much food "great job on eating 7000 calories!" but I will support the positive things they did. And just like 'fat' people are told all the time how unhealthy it is for them to weigh SO MUCH and eat SO MUCH, there isn't any difference in my opinion in telling someone who is eating TOO LITTLE or weighing TOO LITTLE that it is also dangerous for them.

That was all I was getting at.

I apologize if I offended you in any way, shape or form.

Days 294 through 303 pretty much have marked a time of no tracking. I can't go on like this much longer, so I'll get back to it no later than New Year's Day. It's nice to not weigh stuff I'm about to eat--haha! I haven't really overeaten, but I've eaten everything I want. Ya' just have to do this at least once a year, right?

I'm up on yesterday's weigh-in. So my BMI is past 26. But that's okay on a short-term basis. I never updated last week's weigh-in, but I was the same old 151.5--shocking!

Just wanted to let you know, I'm not taking that Kevin Trudeau's book too seriously. I may try the apple-cider vinegar thing for my stomach and I'm gradually getting off the Nexium and Vytorin (for cholesterol). I just don't believe in them anymore. And if I work on the weight and keep up the exercise, maybe things will go okay. I have quit the Vytorin before but the cholesterol went back up some. I'm not sure I believe all that stuff about cholesterol. Don't worry, I won't do anything drastic. I'm just so tired of all the drugs and they always lead to more drugs (3 for blood pressure!!)! You're doing great, hope I can catch up to you, lol. Have a great day!

geevee on 12/27/2006:
I am the LAST person on earth who would ever criticize what anyone ate since I have taken up on myself the duty of enjoying EVERYTHING!

Soon2BThin on 12/27/2006:
Thanks! I went right to the library's website and reserved that book. Sounds interesting and just what I need to read. Like Kevin Trudeau says "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!" lol. And another thing he says over and over "It's all about the money"! If the drug companies didn't have the FDA and the FTC in their back pockets, we might stand a chance! I'll let you know when I get the book.

GG on 12/27/2006:
I do not think you measure your goals through the BMI because that scale is really deciving! You should measure your waste and hips and go by their size. A waist size larger than 35 inches on a woman is considered overwight/obese. Good Luck!!

borntocry on 12/28/2006:
Do you normally weigh everything you eat? I've been thinking about it, but afraid my husband would find it too crazy...

Thanks for your comment, and your advice on weight-lifting. I guess the reason I feel like I should do more than one set is that even if my muscles feel completely exhausted at the end of a set, I feel fine after a few minutes and can do another set pretty easily. So that leads me to believe that I'm either not lifting enough weight or should be doing more than one set. I just feel like I never make any progress... it's probably just because I've never done it for more than a couple of weeks. But it's so demotivating.

Good job on the push-ups, by the way!

Lebkuchen aren't really thin... they kind of look like this. Bahlsen makes them too and I think you can even get those in America. Although they're kind of dry for American tastes.

Good luck with the apple strudel - I was going to make one for Christmas too but decided against it at the last minute!

For my activity:
Fri: Circ Aer Wkt using NordicTrack (7 min/.7 mi)
Sat: Walk 15 min; Driving 3 hrs

Days 292 & 293 were okay all in all.

I'm slightly sore from the little bit of my circuit workout that I was able to get through on Friday. It consisted of pushup (15 mil/20 sissy), shoulder press (25), alternating lunge (20ea), calf raise (70), biceps curl (20ea) and upright row (20). Mind you, my entire workout consists of 14 exercises. Not to mention that it had been 54 days since I did any weights whatsoever. I thought I could mitigate some of the inevitable soreness by using a very low weight, 7.5# dumbbells as opposed to the 13.5# I had worked up to.

It wasn't that the weight was too much, but that I hadn't eaten properly before the workout and I got nauseated. I'm one of those people who would rather die than vomit, so when the wave hit, I promptly hit my workout towel on the floor and took a couple of deep breaths. That was it--I knew I was licked for this session and then just took it easy until the nausea abated. I was able to eat some raisin toast a little later.

I will probably get the full workout in tomorrow. I'll be thinking twice in the future about letting anything get in the way of my weight training. It obviously is something that I had come to rely on since I started this "day counting" in February, and I think I had taken its benefits for granted. What a lesson for my coming years. Still learning . . . after all this time:-)

Haha, I am one of those people too... I haven't thrown up since I was a kid. Yet I routinely do crazy things like go running after a 1000-calorie breakfast. I actually ran my last half-marathon after an all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast (and believe me, I made sure to get my money's worth)!

That's quite an impressive circuit workout you do there - all those pushups! And those are 7.5 lb dumb-bells? I think that's about what I use (not sure because the weight's in kilos and I can never remember exactly how much). One thing I don't understand is that I'm never sore afterwards, and yet I can't really handle much heavier weights. Do you do just one set of each exercise or do you do multiple sets with breaks in between?

WorkingIt on 12/17/2006:

For my activity:
Nothing--in fact I haven't had a stretch of sitting on my wide butt this much since I weighed in the 180s!

Well, that's it--my BMI has hit 26--I wasn't supposed to let that happen. A sign of coming changes in activity levels for sure. Food is tricky this time of year of course, so no promises. Promises get me nowhere anyway:-)

I'm glad some of you got a kick out of the "dog invention" from the previous entry--I could just imagine it on someone's dog!

Day 291 was a day of the week. It was Thursday as a matter of fact. I mixed about 2T of Knorr soup mix with about .25C of sour cream. It was pretty nasty, but I munched on it anyway. I guess I didn't eat enough to get an MSG headache--that stuff is practically all MSG! And I ate some cheese. And some chocolate . . . and some more chocolate . . . and some Smarties gum. Then some pepperoni pizza.

My food choices have just about hit rock bottom--though I haven't been overeating per se. It's a replay of a few Decembers ago. It's time to get back to the hardcore "watching/recording what I eat." And if I make poor choices, to balance them out with better choices and limit the poorer choices. And drink more water too!

On my weigh-in Tuesday I had only gained a half-pound. I will say that I intend to exercise. "I INTEND TO EXERCISE!"

As for exercise, I watched a DVD about Al Hirshfeld this afternoon. BTW, it was so good and I really enjoyed it. Anyway, what brought that up was the comment about how he was TOTALLY stationary. He didn't walk, run, swim, etc. or lift anything heavier than a coffee cup! And he lived to his 90's!

Were you on my mind the past few days! I'm just glad that the cannister of the most luscious biscotti in the world was so small and only contained 6 huge pieces covered in rich dark chocolate and nuts. M-m-m-m-m. Control was out of the question! The other cannister of biscotti was so lacking in comparison that it presents no problem at all for me. Tasteeless.

However, I still have the Perugina, Ferrero Prestige, and Toblerone to deal with, plus a voracious son with a bottomless pit of an appetite.

borntocry on 12/11/2006:
That's too funny, that invention.

Thanks for the comment you left me. Always nice to hear an argument from the somewhat less pro-child camp. I also feel that I've just never been the type to have children, if that makes any sense. I suppose I always assumed I would, but have never really been able to picture myself with kids. People say I'm good with kids, but somehow I just can't see myself as a mother!

And I know what you mean about my husband... really, he isn't as bad as I portray him here because I tend to complain more about the things he does wrong than commend him for the things he does right. But I do sometimes worry about how he will adjust if he's no longer the center of attention. I think he'd be a great father but I can see things getting quite stressful for me, that's for sure.

And yes, my brothers will probably give my parents all the grandkids they could possibly want, so no worries there! To give them credit I think they really do just want the best for me and fear that I could end up with regrets later in life if I don't have kids while I can. I have to admit that I'm kind of worried about that too, which is the only reason I'm even considering it. So it's good to know that this hasn't been the case for you. Thanks for your input!!

Hi Biscotti! Thanks for your cogent comment. Yes, the value of REAL card games is NOT lost on children, once they're exposed to actually participating in them. We had a few altercations during our games at the beginning. "Well, that's the way you do it on the computer."

WHAT? How is it possible to have fun playing cards on the computer? There is so much more involved in a card game!

Well, my kiddies are learning the difference, and they wouldn't leave me alone! I'm serious when I say WE played cards ALL day except for diversions like setting the dinner table, one of the novelties of living w/grandma. I think all they knew before they moved in, in October, was fast food take out.

Probably the fondest memory of my mother was playing either cards or board games with her EVERY single night after dinner. That was so much fun to me, and years later, it still is.

You know, w/Dish TV and its 1000 possibilites, in the past month and a half, we have NEVER watched ANYTHING together on TV! Isn't that marvelous? I think the kiddies are so burnt out on electronics without realizing it that they not only enjoy but have shown outright preference for person-to-person interchange.

This reminds me of your niece and problematical brother and wife. Whatever you can do will have long-lasting effect on the lives of both your niece and her child. It is truly amazing how effective even a little personal attention can have on the lives of others.

I know all about screwy, nutty brothers and their weird lives. Even my brother's friends referred to him as "Crazy Richard". Anything you can do to counter your brother's ill effects would be helpful.

Yesterday I overate badly. It finally exhausted me. I haven't done that in quite a while--have to tuck it in the back of my mind for future wake-up calls--haha! I had to get out in a winter storm, which turned out to be not so bad driving-wise for the time of day. I stopped off for milk at Braum's and picked up a "Cinnamon Crumb Cake," which I proceeded to nibble on for a couple of hours 'til I'd eaten about one-third of it. I'm going to freeze the rest of it. Days 269-273 were okay. I have not been counting, but am picking back up with that today.

To add a positive note to my previous entry, while hanging out in the rehab area I had a physical therapy person tell me about a patient they had a while back who was 106 years old. She was accompanied by her (obese) 80 y/o daughter. And the reason the (slim) old woman (106 is pretty damn old don't you think--haha!) was there was to get back to her home following a hysterectomy. She had been a vegetarian most of her life and was apparently pretty fit for any age. Also she was able to return home earlier than scheduled. Inspirational to say the least.

Haven't been reading much, will try again to get back into it later on today.

Yesterday was Day 268, and it was good. I hit a new low on my weigh-in! And I finally got my NordicTrack back in working order--it's a bit like having an old friend return from a long absence--haha! It's just exercise equipment, but it's a good ol' workout! I had started an entry the day after I used it, but my motivation to write more/comment fizzled. I ended up being sore from "no NTrk" for about 8 days--in my upper thighs--it was ridiculous. I wasn't sore anywhere else.

I found my beloved Lean Cuisine Thai-Style Chicken. They were on sale and I bought all that they had. At least I know which store to zoom to when I run out--hahaha!

Life just sucks so much right now. The weight loss is probably a combination of just not eating regularly or getting any strength/aerobic training to speak of. I will be making a concerted effort to change this.

Also, while I've been in the thick of things, I've spent alot of time at a rehab facility (I'm not the victim, except of circumstance, haha, really though it's such an epic saga by now). At any rate, I observed some other patients who really made me think twice about my choices when I went to the grocery store and when I made my food choices at the end of the day. That sounds simplistic, I know. It was slight, but still it made me think.

There were two people who at first sight didn't look like they belonged. They were obese, yes. But they were close to my age. The man had a catheter, an ostomy bag and oxygen and was having to do his exercise from a wheelchair. He had clear weakness/non-use of one side of his body and you could see he was working hard to keep going. The woman was just obese and was using a bike thingy on the floor while sitting in a chair to just move. Someone told me later that she needed both knees replaced and was simply there to lose weight before she could be cleared for surgery.

Then, if you have the chance to go to a rehab hospital for any reason, the people who are "old," well none of them are remotely obese. The healthier ones are overweight, but not like the previously mentioned ones of my generation. It's a stark reminder, but if you ever hoped to live to a ripe old age--don't be obese! This just sounds like common sense, but it was an almost daily reminder for me at this time. I guess I needed to see it, sort of like Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. It was that much "in my face." Of course time will tell. I will overeat again--but this seems to be a sea change in this journey for me.

Plan for today: NordicTrack

Have a lovely day!

Funny you mentioned your thighs hurting (well, not literally funny, lol) but last week, after I had done my 30 minutes of walking on the treadmill for the first time in over a month, my upper thighs hurt so bad I couldn't even sleep well for 2 nights, I mean, I could not find a comfortable position to relieve the pain. I've NEVER had that much pain in my legs before, really scared me. But after a couple of days, it was better! Right away I had thought it was such a strange pain that maybe it was caused by something else, blood clots. I have this condition called Factor Five that causes a person to clot easier than others. That's why I had to quit my hormone replacement therapy. Anyways, I'm just rambling here, sorry. I hope things get better for you. You're right, we never see obese old people. Something to think about. Well, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

It looks like you are getting into the swing of things very well! I'm glad to hear you have equipment that works that you will be able to use again!!! Nothing beats working out at home instead of driving to a gym on a cold, blustery night!

Hey, Happy Thanksgiving! And congratulations on your new low! I'm so jealous! Sorry things still haven't sorted themselves out for you, though. At least you're losing weight as a result! When things go wrong in my life, I always resort to food.

Thanks for the comment you left me, and your encouragement. Always a plodder in the past, I've started trying to work on speed now to make every workout count, instead of just clocking up the "junk miles" which I think caused my knee injury last summer. So far so good!

Pity you aren't a Cowboys fan - they're doing great now without my beloved Bledsoe!

Hope you've had a wonderful day today! Big Smile!!!
