Day 31 was good.

Mrs Lee was terribly overweight, so her doctor put her on a diet. "I want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you'll have lost at least 5 pounds."

When Mrs Lee returned, she shocked the doctor by losing nearly 20 pounds. "Why, that's amazing!" the doctor said, "Did you follow my instructions?"

Mrs Lee nodded. "I'll tell you though, I thought I was going to drop dead that third day."

"From hunger, you mean?"

"No, from skipping!"

Hope you have a lovely day!

Day 30 was good. I was able to do my jog a little earlier, so I didn't try the sandwich thing.

So this is 30 days into my goal of 145 pounds.

How about a little evaluation of where I'm at: I've jogged 8 days, which is the same number of days for all of Dec-Jan-Feb. I've completed 9 circuit workouts.

I feel stronger and more confident that I will reach my goal weight, eventually. Right now though I'd just like to be able to get my jog in (without the stopping) as easy as I did back in September. Looks like I started the slacking after that. The strength to run didn't go, but the endurance sure did. I could kick myself now, but sometimes I think we just have to have breaks from it all. And when I remember the trap I was in--the one where I justify eating more because I'm jogging nearly every day, well, if I can break free of that this time--the temporary loss of endurance was worth it. It's hell getting back to it, but I think I've learned my lesson!

I'm eating differently, and I'm thinking about food differently as well. Maybe wisdom does come with age. I suppose time will tell--haha!

Hope you have a lovely day!

The odds of going to the store for a loaf of bread and coming out with only a loaf of bread are three billion to one. --Erma Bombeck

For my activity: Jog 18 min (5-3-3-2-5)/Walk 20 min

Day 28 was really pretty good though I felt rather "flat" all day--maybe a bit of a food hangover. My jog was sheer torture. I wasn't going to NOT do it because, though I had a circuit workout scheduled for the day, I woke up with a spasm in my back/shoulder blade. I didn't want to aggravate it with weightlifting, so I'll do the circuit tomorrow. (My shoulder/back is much better today.)

I don't eat a particular lot of complex carbs for breakfast and lunch. In fact I eat six pieces of shredded wheat n bran (per meal) for those meals. I know it sounds stupidly precise--but it works for me. I don't get hungry when I include plenty of protein. (The "Woman Drs Diet ..." calls for melba toast, but I'm not really a melba toast person.) When I originally started jogging I remember getting sluggish during the jog (like I am now) and what helped then was to eat half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich--on wh wheat--sometime before the jog. I think I'll try that (or maybe even just a quarter of a sandwich) for the next couple of jogs. I don't really feel like I need the food, but I need the edge taken off of whatever is causing the sluggishness. It worked before, even though it may be all in my head:-) The only other solution is to quit--I'm not quitting!

Hope you have a lovely day!

Hi biscotti,

I have that exact same problem, and I also wonder if it's all just in my head - after all there are so many people out there who go jogging first thing in the morning, before breakfast, so why don't they get sluggish? I know I tried it on my last trip to America and I didn't get sluggish then, but I think that's just because I was eating so much over there in general that I always had plenty of glycogen stores to keep me going. Now that I'm counting calories I need to eat something first or I feel like I'm "running on empty". I've also found that even this isn't enough if I let myself get too hungry beforehand. So now I plan out a high-carbohydrate snack one or two hours ahead and then grab something small just before I get going.

That's what I'm doing right now, as a matter of fact - just finished a cup of oatmeal with applesauce and walnuts and now I've just got to saw a Powerbar in two so I can take half of it with me when I leave for the track.

Good luck!

geevee on 03/27/2006:
If you think you're precise, you ought to see me with my measuring cups and food scale. I wonder how I ever lived without them! Son Jim's eyes roll when he watches me measure.

I agree about Melba toast just not doing the trick! I much prefer a crisp bread, but when in a "reckless" mode, much prefer whole wheat bread and super-satisfying PNB.

Day 27 was bad in a good way:-) I had a belated birthday dinner of Japanese food and I kinda overdid it. But that's okay. Just have to recommit myself to "the usual" starting today. This place has a dish called "Kani Salad" that I could eat for three meals a day. It's small and has a little crab, caviar, avocado, cabbage, and I think there's a little wasabi in the dressing. It's lovely, light and satisfying.

Day 26 wasn't all that good. I ate alot more than usual and not "good" stuff either. Reality Check--I'm up a pound!

I did a little actual running during my excursion yesterday. I guess the test from the other day instilled a little "memory" in my legs, because it was completely unintentional. I found myself winded and had to make myself slow down. (The good thing is that my calves were able to keep up--mooooo!) If I keep it up, I may be inspired to do another 12-min test sooner than later!

Thanks for all the comments on my entry yesterday. I didn't mean the entry in an offensive way and my commenters didn't seem to take it as such. It's interesting that it's still okay for boy's pants to be called "husky." And Monet's younger son needs smaller pants for his taller body, but has to settle for 3 sizes bigger to get the length. That's just not right!

Money will buy you a pretty good dog, but it won't buy the wag of his tail. --Henry Wheeler Shaw

For my activity: Circ Aer Wkt using Airdyne (23 min/5.5 mi); Walk 10 min

Day 25 was good.

During my Circuit Workout yesterday, something made me think of "Chubbies." And it made me laugh too! (Disclaimer: I'm sorry if you're offended by my writing about it.)

I wasn't fat when I was little. I wasn't even fat in HS. I wore bikinis in the summer, which the bottoms came nearly completely off of when I dove off the diving board--even the high dive. I think the bottoms got down to my knees once (during a dive)--haha! I wore size 9s then--maybe a 7 once or twice. Maybe by today's teenage standards I was fat, I don't know. Do you remember "5-7-9 Shop?" I guess now it would be called "0-1-2 Shop" or something--hahaha!

I remember exactly two fat girls from (my) age 5-18. One was my friend from K-3, until I moved. She wasn't all that fat, but was BIG and taller than the rest of us. Her dad was way over 6 feet tall. I also remember my mother made a "tent dress" for me to wear as a party dress--ONCE--yikes!

People who are different catch alot of hell. The worst thing to be back then was different from the "in crowd." I was just as opinionated as I am now. I got into alot of trouble for asking why certain things were the way they were--back then. I was certainly allowed to ask, but things most certainly didn't change as a result of my questions.

You probably have to be a certain age to remember that size for "chubby" girls. It made me wonder what the sizing is now for children "of size" or overweight or obese children, since we're told that it's such a problem these days. I don't see fat kids for the most part, I guess they're inside playing video games. All the kids I see riding bikes around here are of essentially normal weight (I assume). (Maybe they're underweight.)

Anyway, I would assume there's quite a large market (no pun intended) for "plus size" children's clothing. I'm sure it's not "Chubbies" for girls and "Husky" for boys these days. That would be soooo politically incorrect by today's standards. I used to shop for my niece a few years ago and I didn't notice "Plus Size" for children back then.

Hope you have a lovely day!

I remember the 5-7-9 shops. That 9 we used to wear is probably a 5 today. I remember chubby and husky too. I imagine "plus" is the only acceptable term nowadays.

liza36 on 03/24/2006:
I remember the 5-7-9 shop too. There definitely is a problem with childhood obesity now that there wasn't when I was a kid. I think the kids now just have to go up to adult sizes if they can't fit in children's clothing. It is an epidemic, and society has a lot to do with contributing to it. Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox before I say too much!

By the way, WHOO HOO on your size 10 shorts! That's awesome to be able to get them on and zipped, as you described yesterday. You are doing a fantastic job!

Thanks for your comment to me today. I really appreciate it. I have been very frustrated at the lack of exercise I'm able to do. The doctor has ordered a stress test, which won't be done until May. But I think I'm going to start up my normal activity soon, because it's driving me crazy to not do anything! Thanks!!

Maria7 on 03/24/2006:
I like your statement about the dog...so true.

I think SIZE of fast foods contribute to obesity. I ordered a SMALL cone of chocolate ice cream today and was given one stacked so tall it was leaning over. Of course I didn't refuse it and once I got it, I felt COMPELLED to finish it...though I'd planned on one half that size, since it was listed as 'SMALL'. I'm not saying fast foods are 'THE' reason for those who are overweight in America, because it really all comes down to us and whether we say yes or no, but I think we've become accustomed to LARGE servings at fast food places and that makes it easier to overeat at home, also. Remember the size of servings when we were growing up? Much less smaller than today (but I'm sure NOT complaining!!!) Just something to think about. But to also remember...it's always our choice.

monet0239 on 03/24/2006:
Hmm.. maybe you should come out with a clothing line for the "chubbies"... hehhe.. no really , the only bigger clothes I ever saw when buying for my boys was the huskies.. but both of my boys always wear slim.. my oldest is now 6 foot 2 inchs and weighs 205.. but he doesnt look fat.. just toned .... my yougest.. grrr.. he could wear a size 5 slim around the waist and 8 slim for the length.. but they dont makem like that.. so he has to wear the 8's and a belt..lol.. I dont alow the saggin and baggin in this house..

keep up your great work.. and you gave us something to think about.. .. having children in school... I have seen the "chubbies".. and I get mad at their parents.. maybe me having a weight problem makes me help my boys to make better choices.. dont get me wrong.. they have their sweets from time to time.. but I am not one to let them have them all the time.. or all the sodas and chips.. I get them apples and oranges.. I never was 'fat" or chubby is school.. now that I look back on it..lol I always thought I was.. just because I had really muscular theigs.. from dancing.. but I do know how other kids tease the "chubby " Ones.. and its sad.. I dont blame the kids for it.. but to each their own I guess.. I remember when Korbey was little.. he would carry around abag of those little carrots.. and I wouldn't let him have kool aid.. my friend used to get on to me.. hes a kid.. let him have some.. he would when we went to her house.. and she even bought some for Korbey to take home.. It stayed in my canister for years , till I threw it out..lol.. yuk I say.. too much sugar.. and my lil one now is hyper enough let alone give him more sugar..lol.. eeeek.... ok I better hush.. lol.. you have a great evening.. :O)hugs

A year from now you may wish you had started today. --Karen Lamb

For my activity: NordicTrack 31 min/3.4 mi; Jog 12 min/DogJog 5 min/Walk 20 min

Day 24 was good. I did my 12-min test and it wasn't all that great (1.05 mi=fair; 1.1 would have brought me up to average for my age group). I did keep myself at a steady pace for the whole time though--felt like stopping for a walk break at 5 minutes in--but I kept on going!

On a whim I tried on some size 10 shorts that I've never worn in public. (This is always a good thing to try when I feel skinny:-) Well, they went over my hips, buttoned up and zipped up! Who woulda thunk it--haha! They're not quite ready for "public consumption" though. Just to see if it was a fluke I tried on another pair of 10s that I've never worn and with the same result. Bit by bit I'm getting there.

It's always good to do one when I haven't been jogging for a few days--I can give myself a chance to go all out, which is the point of the test--to "test" myself and see where I am! For my activity: Circ Aer Wkt using Airdyne (20 min/4.6 mi); Walk 15 min

Day 22 was good. Only down a half-pound, but that's okay.

On my measurements I'm down a half-inch overall. It would be alot more if it weren't for my calf measurement going up by about a half-inch--the only thing I can pin that on is my weight workout yesterday--I'm currently doing 95 calf raises. And I don't have small calves to begin with--I think they're ready to take to market--hahaha!

And if that's not enough--my body fat using the Health Central Home Body Fat Test is down from 33% to 30%. This is probably the most consistent I've been with the weightlifting in about 15 years--and even though it takes nearly half the workout to not feel like I'm being dragged through a keyhole, I'll keep doing it. This is especially true with the abs work--I almost feel like I could do one more set by the time I finish the second one, whereas the first one feels like I never did a crunch or leg lift in my entire life! I'm extremely curious where I'll be come June or July if I stay consistent!

Hope you have a lovely day!

Hi biscotti,

It was kind of reassuring to read what you wrote about your weightlifting workouts, because I feel the same way when I'm running. I'm always on the brink of panic when I start because my legs feel so heavy that I don't know how I'll be able to run for even two minutes! And yet once I get into the rhythm of it, I often feel like I could go on and on. It really shows how important it is to be mentally disciplined enough to persevere past that first stage and get to the really rewarding part!
