Thanks for all the encouragement--it means so much to me!!!

I had a very vigorous workout yesterday: Airdyne alternating with some weightlifting (dumbbells), and pushups. It only lasted about 12 minutes, possibly because I was so ragged out from the carbo binge--I didn't know what else to attribute it to. I stayed on the bike until the timer hit 15 minutes. I was pedaling with one foot and just enjoying the air from the fan. I bounced back after a little water and decided to push on and did 30 minutes on the NordicTrack.

You know it never dawned on me that the exhausted, don't want to go on feeling all these years was coming from having a big carbo lunch several hours earlier--maybe it sounds crazy, but all these weeks when I have curbed my complex carbs to a reasonable level, I never had the feeling I couldn't finish my workout, nor did I want to.

Consumed >100 oz water and ate fairly well. Nothing to write home about, but nothing like a binge either.

Hope everyone is having a good food choice day. Keep your eye on your goals!

traya on 07/26/2001:
Great workout! I just started cutting down my carb intake this week. I'm curious to see how it goes, tomorrow is weigh day! :-)

dulcinea on 07/26/2001:
Wonderful observation regarding the carbs. Sounds like your day way something to write home about.

halley on 07/26/2001:
You are so right about to many carbs making you worn out. Isn't it amazing how we don't think of food as chemicles. What we eat has a physical reaction inside our bodies. It really does make a difference what we put inside of us!

Hitting the Wall

If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning. -Catherine Aird

The good news is that I took about a 15-min walk yesterday. I was going to do a more substantial workout, but I CHOSE not to.

The bad news . . . well the rest is bad (I think I ate 10,000 calories yesterday hahaha). Seriously, I went on a carbohydrate binge. I knew very early that I was not going to control myself, so I gave in. It started with a couple of waffles with chocolate syrup, then some candy, it ended with potato chips, a sub sandwich (I only ate half--which I wouldn't have done before--would've eaten it ALL!), and a raspberry turnover. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the hell out of it. It's just not the way I want to eat for the rest of my life. I want to continue (even after I reach my goal) to make reasonable/sensible food choices. I had my protein for the day, but the rest of my food choices spelled disaster.

As an aside, I haven't had this much sugar/refined carbs for the whole 5 weeks. My joints and even my skin were aching by the time I got to bed. What a revelation! For anyone out there who has not tried to curb their sugar, I encourage you to try it. I don't think I could have done all the exercise I've been doing and have my joints feel like they did last night.

I kind of thought I would have hit this wall sooner, but now that it happened, I feel like I have gotten over the hump. (Although I hope the next one doesn't come anytime soon.) This is actually the start of my sixth week of full-fledged change. I am ready for more. I want to reach my goal and I know that I won't be able to do it by losing my focus. I have thought about building a binge into my plan, but that's not realistic. Maybe when I get a little more wisdom, and a few less inches and pounds;-)

Thanks for everyone who read this far and thanks for all your fine comments--I couldn't have made this much progress without ya'll!!!

Yesterday is over. You made it through so don't beat yourself up over it. Just start back on track right away and keep up the great work you have been doing on your masterpiece....YOU!

halley on 07/25/2001:
Sorry to hear about the food. I know the wall of which you write. I am very well acquainted with that wall, but it does go away, or at least get lower!

Canadian on 07/25/2001:
Hi there :-) I reside in the suburbs of Toronto...and yes, we get extremely hot weather here in the summer. lol...I have a good friend in Texas and she too use to think that we didn't get this hot in Canada either..but, we sure do, eh! lol. We basically are the same climate as New York City since it isn't that far from us. I have had days where I didn't diet either, just start over the next day and don't look back..you'll make your goal. :-) Good luck to you. Diana

Tabby on 07/25/2001:
Just keep on going.Everyone has those bad times and it's easy to get discouraged and want to stop, but thats when you have to push yourself harder and make it work for you. I have danced around a box of dough nuts all day but I never ate one and that for me is a huge thing. Normally I could have ate the whole box. My boss brought them by for all of us not knowing I am trying to shed some weight. Work hard.

I did pretty well diet-wise, more calories than I would have thought, but you live and you learn. Workout consisted of NordicTrack for 45 min alternating with weights and some floor exercises (abs, pushups, leg lifts). I have lost 8.5 inches in Abdomen, Waist, Bust, Hips, Thigh, and Arm. Also, my watch is getting looser if I didn't have anything else to go by.

Gotta go . . . everyone have a great Tuesday!

Kyrin on 07/24/2001:
You get an "Attagirl!" and a "Woooo-Hoooo!" for those lost inches. That takes work!

halley on 07/24/2001:
Isn't it amazing when the areas that you don't even think of as fat start to get thinner! I have had to stop wearing all of my rings because they just fall off if I move my hand too quickly!!!

halley on 07/24/2001:
My gym opens at 5:30am m-f and 7:00 am on sat. I workout every morning when it opens, before I eat breakfast. I do cardio 6 mornings a week. My weightlifting days are t-th night after work and saturday morning, when I do weights before my cardio. I do eat before I go liftweights on t-th, but only because I can't stand being hungry!!! During the week I wake up at 5:00 but I don't eat until I'm in my car on the way to work around 7:20am. So it's over 2 hours from when I wake up until I eat. Which, happily, is about the time I get hungry!

muggg on 07/24/2001:
Congrats on the exercise workout and the inches lost! Woo Hoo!

Thanks for your comments! My diary here is what has made the difference for me being successful! It keeps me going when the going is tough and I keep doing good things for myself because of the examples set by others!

I had a very balanced diet day for a change. No workout--just housework and a 15-min walk. Water and more water (>80 oz). I enjoyed a bit of chocolate syrup in my skim milk for a snack--the calcium can't hurt, either. It hit the spot in the absence of those evil macaroons that I couldn't seem to stop eating a few days ago.

When I made the flan a couple weeks ago, even though I tried, I couldn't keep from eating 2 or more servings a day until it was all gone (using fat-free milk just added to the temptation).

My plan this week is to stay on track and limit "outside the diet" eating, keep up my workouts, and stay focused on my goal, which is 136-142 lb by mid-December.

I hope you all have a good day!

autumn on 07/23/2001:
hey! that 15 minute walk is considered exercise!!

halley on 07/23/2001:
It is difficult to stick to your plan when there are temptations right in the house!!!! Good luck keeping it under control!

Abdomen is down 3.25 inches since June 23. Yesterday I did about 30 minutes each of Airdyne and NordicTrack trying to alternate intense with fairly easy. Some ab exercises. A good workout all-in-all. I drank >132 oz water yesterday. Extra water makes my workout much easier.

Found another body fat measurement on shapeup.org and IT'S assessment of my body fat was just incredible. It used BMI and it automatically, since I didn't have a measurement to plug in for body fat, said I was at least 40% fat. I'm just going to have to seek out someone to check it because last time I had it checked (I was in about the same shape as I am now) it was 33%--that was by a professional using calipers.

No wonder the average person gets discouraged from losing weight. It's just as daunting as hell--I'm just grateful that I got started and have gained some momentum in this thing. I'm not perfect--but I do know what works now. I guess I just didn't have the courage to change before.

I hope ya'll are having a wonderful weekend. Thanks for all the great comments!

The cookies are all gone! I no longer have to worry about NOT eating them. I had a very challenging workout yesterday. I did the Burn Fat Faster Workout, which included 2 sets of about half the lifts. I actually did 2 sets of 15 pushups instead of a bench press (from the knee stance, not toes--not in THAT good of shape, YET). I also used a little bit of weight doing the squats--no problem with the knee--I'm really trying to handle it with kid gloves.

Eventually I do want to try running again, but that's months away, if at all. One of my goals is to run a half-marathon--but I'm not going to jeopardize my joint health to reach it. (I may have to make it the equivalent of a half-marathon in a swimming pool--hahaha!)

Exercisewise--today or tomorrow will be complete rest. Thanks to everyone for their fine comments--I do appreciate ALL feedback.

Have a good weekend one and all!

halley on 07/21/2001:
Good job on the workput today. As for the running, give it time. I have bad knees which were even more strained due to my extra weight, but now I can jog without problems. Look into eating lots of fish. It has omega 3 fatty acids which might help your joints.

Firebabe on 07/22/2001:
lol, had to do a little back reading when I saw your cookie comment, as bad as me and those dern chocolate donuts!!!! Sounds like your doing really good though girl, keep the focus!!!

Had a so-so diet day--ate too much junk. I chalk it up to the heat getting to me. But I redeemed myself for supper. I did about 55 minutes on the NordicTrack--felt very good. Also took a 15-minute walk. Drank alot of water >100 oz for the day (thanks to everyone harping on the water drinking).

This is my 5th week (next Tues will start my 6th) and I am shocked at how fit I feel. Anyone out there who is afraid to step up their exercise should reconsider (always taking into consideration your own personal health). It is proving to be a huge motivator to me. My bellwether is my right knee; I know that I have to take a day off if it starts getting sore during a workout.

Anyway, hope all's well with everyone on here. Have a good diet & exercise day.

Whoa Millie, let's get this cheating in line, on track, whatever; Let's NOT eat 5 macaroon cookies in a row ever again!(The devil says yeah next time let's eat 6 hahahaha.) That's what I did today--ate 5.

Other than this major infraction (which I enjoyed anyway) I ate very well food-choice-wise. Also, I did my Burn Fat Faster Workout + 25 minutes on the NordicTrack. For what it's worth, I ate the cookies BEFORE the workout. Now, I have to buckle down, or the 2 lb/wk goal is going to go out the window (today it was on the ledge and I was trying to coax it back in).

Did anyone see the commercial for granola or breakfast bars where the woman's buttocks is a pair of oversized cinnamon buns?

The best to everyone on their food choices!

halley on 07/19/2001:
5 in a row is a bit much, 1 is just teasing yourself, but 2 might be OK on occasion. Sounds like your exercise was great. Keep that up!

I don't have access to a body fat scale at this time, but I found this one: Fit or Fat Home Body Fat Test. I'm using it as I go along to have something to go by as I'm sure it's accuracy only goes so far.

I had a good diet day; I'm still eating leftover ribs--they're surprisingly lean. Portionwise, I can't eat very much these days. I guess that's a good sign. I'm slowly learning what I can get away with, without feeling miserable. I don't get hunger pangs as long as I limit the complex carbs. I'm still only eating 6 pieces of shr wht 'n bran per meal. No bread, pasta, or crackers.

The diet change hasn't changed when I eat a cookie or other sweet, I still just want more. I do well, as long as I have a pickle or carrots to munch on or a glass of water. Waterwise, I think I drank about 110 oz of water yesterday.

When I'm exercising, since I'm indoors, I can really put away the water. I did only aerobic and ab ex, which consisted of 30 minutes each of NordicTrack and Airdyne. Later on, I took a 20-minute walk. This I have to report was a milestone for me thus far. I noticed that even though it was still hot at nine o'clock, as I was walking up an incline my knees didn't ache and I was so much less breathless at the top than usual. My hard work is paying dividends.

SweetChubs on 07/18/2001:
holy crow! Tried that boday fat test and it said I should be 197 lbs!!! I mean I'm female and am 5'5". You might want to find a new calculator.

Had a very good diet day yesterday and did NordicTrack 40 min + interval + a bunch of ab ex (I just don't like these in large amounts--who does???). Not much else. I have a site to mention about fat measurement, will put it on tomorrow's entry--hopefully 'round midnight.

Hope all's well with ya'll out there in Diet Diary Land!!!
