(Short Challenges :: Wt Trng :: Pre-Bkfst Cardio)
Weight: 158.5

Body Fat: 33.8%::3.8 . . . 35.2%::9.3
Start: 189 (June 2001)
Low: 150 (Nov 2006)
Current BMI=28.1 (24.9 = 140.5#)

For my activity:
Wed: Walk 45 min; Jog 2 min/Walk 3 min x 2 (cut short); Bike Ride 14 min/2.0 mi
Thur: Walk 25 min
Fri: Nothing much

4-Day Challenge (W :: Th :: F :: S): 120 oz Water, 90 min Activity and Green Tea (with lemon--only 1 daily). Essentially abandoned after Day 1--which was okay. The challenge is doable, but just not this week. I definitely don't think I'm asking too much of myself. (I'll get back on some attempt at a groove here again soon. )

Goal for September not met. To be fair I didn't check either weight or BF to see today, but it's screwed--no need to verify;-)

Recap of last couple days:
1. Thursday I had one one coffee while out before noon (to my credit).
2. Off and running, so a little more caffeine into the evening unfortunately.
3. Spent a couple/three hours on a phone call that night--bad idea.
4. Didn't get to wind down before bed--completely wired--perfect storm.
5. Didn't eat much all day.
6. The above is a recipe for a disastrous night.
7. I didn't really think it would be as difficult as it was.
8. Pure hell ensued, and
I got less than 2 hrs sleep total.
9. I'll spare the details.
10. Thought of going to bed early last night, but just couldn't--it's just as well.
11. I was a little afraid of a mini-repeat of Thursday night.
12. I got a little over 8 hrs--WHEW!
13. To keep going all day yesterday, it was essential to have coffee.

I had coffee while out today, but I think I'm done. I'l stick to my one regular green tea + lemon in the morning--refreshing and delicious--mmmmmm! (Not ready to go with decaf green.) Back to the trenches with it all, get back to regular wt trng this month (I hope), put one foot in front of the other and MOVE ON!

Challenges brought to me by Kyrin! Once upon a time:-)

Day 2 no coffee

Yesterday was day 1 of no coffee--I had only one decaf with milk on the day. No headache so far--probably because I just don't drink enough, but it's also the other effects that I don't notice are completely gone 'til I've lasted a few days without drinking it. I felt quite fatigued during the day yesterday, and I think that was directly related to no coffee.

Uh, my timing for this is impeccable--haha--tomorrow is National Coffee Day in the US. I think 7-11 and Krispy Kreme have free coffee offers if you're so inclined:-) Then there's the study that 4 cups of coffee decreases women's depression chance by 20%--3 cups by 15%. It's been a zillion years since I drank more than a couple of cups of coffee per day on a regular basis.

Good on the exercise! If I drank 4 cups of coffee I'd be biting my nails off!

Umpqua on 09/28/2011:
Good going on the exercise and no coffee! I used to drink 4 cups a day years ago (plus tea) and I was irritable and sleepy after the caffeine buzz wore off. I discovered I had more energy when I cut back. Have a good one!

moogy on 09/28/2011:
I don't drink tea or coffee, but it just goes to show how dependent upon stimulants some people get just to have a normal life. When really food should provide all we need if we eat correctly.....I talk a good game!!

V on 09/28/2011:
Well now I really don't have to tell you how much of this I used to drink because you already know..You are so right about those supplements and I try not to partake after my morning cardio..I have been getting in at least 7 hrs of sleep per night..It really doesn't take much for me to get all ampy, which is why I do my cardio in the morning..Anyways i hope your detox goes with very small or NO side effects..

You know your own body as far as coffee goes. I guess I could give it up if it was a health issue. So far I can tolerate waking up early but we'll see... Starbuck's decaf is actually quite good. Or maybe I'm not so discriminating!

Current BMI=28.1 (24.9 = 140.5#)

For my activity:
Thur: Walk 25 min; Jog 2 min/Walk 2 min x 9 (skipped last 3 reps)*
Fri: This & That

Just to account, I've had a banner week of sleep deprivation. Tu::5.5 hrs, W::5.5 hrs, Th::4.5 hrs and F::8 hrs, which would be okay if the under 8 numbers were during 3 separate weeks instead of 3 nights. Coffee is not my friend--I wish that were not true. I hate that I can't be friends with coffee anymore.

So this proves that (for me) catching up on sleep isn't a practical way to live. The above amounts to an average of 6 hrs/night. Not catastrophic, but not good. I'm just never going to make up the sleep deficit--I can only do better tonight and tomorrow night and every other night:-)

Coffee crept back into my diet. So when my current supply is done, including the very flavorful decaf, I will go directly back to one green tea+lemon in the morning--I found a very good store brand organic. Quite nice, and I've tried a bunch. This is not the worst thing in the world. It's better for my sleep (even though I don't drink coffee past about 10a or 12n) and my overall mood.

*Will have to repeat this next time out. Perhaps I will be less sleep deprived.

grannyannie on 09/25/2011:
Does the decaf bother you as well? I know decaf has a tiny amount of caffeine in it, but if you have it in the morning..? Hope you are able to get more quality sleep soon.

V on 09/25/2011:
:( I totally understand what you are going through, I think that is why I am always reluctant to have a cup, I am sure for me it would lead to another..Good luck with parting with your soon to be ex friend!!

greengirl on 09/25/2011:
Perhaps an occasional morning cup when you feel the need for a treat might not have too detrimental effect on your sleep. I have a similar problem with tea and drink the decaf version after 12 noon. It's not so bad :-)

Life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born at the age of eighty and gradually approach eighteen. --Mark Twain

For my activity:
Tues: Walk 40 min
Wed: Walk 10 min

The week's not going so according to plan, but that's all right. I'll get in the jog/walk today for sure--playin' it by ear at the moment:-)

Oh, and on the mowing--the reason for not mowing is simple. It hasn't been wet enough here. Pretty bizarre.

Sleep and me: I don't ever sleep more than about 8 hours. EVER. (I have gotten a rare 10 or 11 after being up all night and having the luxury of sleeping in, but it's not what I strive for. It's a complete anomaly. For me that's a recipe for really screwing with my health.) On the other hand, it isn't good for me to sleep less than about 5 or 6 hours.

Catching up on sleep doesn't happen. I subscribe to the current science that sleeping more than 8 hours or less than about 6 on a regular basis isn't good--FOR ME. Catching up on sleep is a myth--sure you can do it, but healthwise it isn't optimal. Getting regular sleep nightly is how we're built as humans. Your mileage may vary (YMMV).

This is all especially true since I found out I have sleep apnea and now use CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) religiously. Yep, religiously means I don't go to bed at night without using CPAP therapy. I certainly may take a minuscule nap from time to time, but it's a treacherous thing, short-lived (2-3 min if that) and very unsatisfying.

Now with CPAP my sleep is uneventful, restful and just about all I could ask for. I don't have to worry about not feeling rested. It's one less thing to worry about and it has allowed me to get on with my life!

KayBee on 09/22/2011:
Since surgery I haven't been able to sleep LESS than 8-9 hours. My eyelids start to feel heavier around 9 PM (crazy!), and when the morning clock screams at 6 AM, I reset it to 7h45. Before surgery I had 5-6 hours and it was enough... with some extra sleep on Sunday afternoons from time to time. Sorry you are having trouble on this particular subject. It must be very difficult.

KayBee on 09/22/2011:
Exactly, you're right about getting a solid treatment is a light! I hope to get that about my "menopausa" thingie... now it seems you were right about this one. I tried to book an appt for gyno but they said mid-November was the earliest! :(( So I have to find an other, trustworthy one...

grannyannie on 09/22/2011:
Happy you're getting the sleep you need. I need a solid 8 hours which I usually get.

glycrina on 09/22/2011:
I have always been a good sleeper. I get my 7-8 hours and when I don't I am a MONSTER. I also find when I am sleeping well, I eat less.

Umpqua on 09/22/2011:
So true about getting regular, consistent sleep. After having interrupted sleep for several years with the young uns, I really value getting my regular, solid 7 hours now (that's about my average). Have a good one!

moogy on 09/22/2011:
I think I may be stealing your sleep biscotti. Due to my Dysthymia, I have to have ten hours, eleven is better. On the rare occasions I get 9 I am a complete mess during the day, like a zombie and end up sleeping for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Of course this means that you are probably doing all the things I should be doing while I am sleeping and you are awake. What do you do to fill the time?

V on 09/22/2011:
One less thing to worry about sounds good to me :) I usually average 7 per night..I am going to agree on the too much sleep as well..I find myself groggy and usually a severe headache if I have a non interrupted sleepathon(rarely happens)..Hey Thank you for all of your kind words of encouragement :)

liza36 on 09/23/2011:
I wish there was such a thing as catching up on sleep. I sure could use it. Have a great weekend.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 09/24/2011:
Your weeks sound like my weeks, do they ever go according to plan!? as for sleep...tell me about it! I am up at 4am today because I know full well that I have too many activities planned for this weekend!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 09/24/2011:
Moreover, I agree with you on sleep. I have no understanding of how people feel GOOD on a consistant basis when receiving 5-6 or even just 7 hours sleep. I feel absolutely miserable. Even with coffee! and binging becomes easily accomplished when the body is so tired, so hungry for fuel.

I mowed for the first time in about 4 months--very unusual. And it wasn't even a full mowing, which means I skipped big parts of the yard to just mow a couple of high-grass spots. In previous summers the longest I went without mowing was probably about 6 weeks.

For my activity:
Fri: Walk 30 min
Sat: Walk 35 min; Jog 2 min/Walk 2 min x 9
Sun: Walk 30 min

Quick facts:
1) It rained a little.
2) My eye is sooo much better--feels better now than a few weeks ago.
3) It looks like hell still--my eyeball.
4) It's a good thing I'm not an eyeball model;-)

Details: To improve my jogging I'm going to have to stick to the script a little better. Do more cross-training (biking, wt trng, etc). My heartrate is in the right place (my recovery time is remarkable), but I'm just too fat to push myself apparently.

Interesting: I don't feel all that fat until I begin to push myself in this way. The paradigm from last year is dead--deader than a doornail--yet it keeps bobbing up and sort of laughing at me saying, "Don't you worry, I'll be back." I know that once I get past about mid-December, which will be a year out from when I first started throwing caution to the wind (in a manner of speaking) and getting off my bottom in a big way, this sense will be gone. In the meantime, all I can do is behave my way in the right direction. Easier said than done.

Boooo-ring: My body fat % hasn't ever been this high while being this active, so I don't have a good frame of reference, not to mention the fact that I've never been 52--today I'm 52.5--woo-hoo--haha! I can push myself on the bike (both stationary and in the street) and on the NordicTrack (though I haven't done NT AT ALL for awhile now). I'll try recommitting to a weekly schedule, and if I don't see an improvement, I'll go from there. (As an aside I think of the 93 y/o lady who used to walk in my neighborhood--age isn't a very good excuse. It's probably as good an excuse as my body fat % and corresponding fat, sluggish and unfit body.)

Zzzzzzzz: Food is a huge key of course. I'm getting better there, but my long-term goal of eating "McDougall/Esselstyn style" is a few months off. I was abviously more motivated (by crappy health) when I stumbled on the Esselstyn book last year. And I know that I have to start where I am today or that day--whatever I decide is THE day.

LOL on your eyeball modeling career ;P I'm glad it's feeling better!

My MIL has been diagnosed as pre-diabetic, and I brought her the Esselstyn book yesterday. She says she's interested in making changes, so I'm hoping she'll take something - anything from it. She has been eating processed foods for so long that I'm not sure how much she can or is willing to change, but perhaps this diagnosis will be a wakeup call to her.....Have a great week!

liza36 on 09/19/2011:
Funny about the eyeball model.

It's interesting to note the body fat as you mention, while being so active. I wonder what that's attributed to. I know you'll figure it out. I'll be so interested when THE day arrives that you'll go full force with the Esselstyn style. Enjoy your day.

grannyannie on 09/19/2011:
Hope your eye is 100% soon. You're right, age is no excuse. I've known some very it women in their 90's. :-) You'll get there, just keep at it!

glycrina on 09/19/2011:
My body fat rate % is a little higher than yours but I am a few lbs heavier. I am also very active. Once the muscle starts burning the fat it should go down even if your weight doesn't. I am no expert but if you are doing weight training maybe an increase in weight or repititions may lead to leaner muscles??

greengirl on 09/19/2011:
Hi Biscotti, thanks for the comment. It is difficult to have supervisors who are less experienced and a lot younger than I am and it is the result of an extremely ill-considered restructure at work. I became part of a large specialised team who were all on a higher grade than the four of us who were put in with them. They had never had lower grades working with them before and all had to train up to learn how to supervise us !!! I'm the eldest in the team but to be honest I know as much as them . My problem is that I am a family woman and they are mainly career women. I know who has the most fun outside work tho (and it's not them!!) so I don't repine too much. To do the team justice very few of them actually try to supervise me in any way. They just leave me to get on with it :-)

moogy on 09/19/2011:
Sooo glad that your eyeball is finally starting to get better, have you thought about auditioning for a zombie movie, you sound as if you would be fabulous for a role!! I wish that you could feel as good about your food as you do about your exercise, it sounds like it would be the final part of the puzzle. I don't think that age is an excuse but I do think that age needs to be taken into consideration when we push ourselves, joints do give us pain, plus all the other little niggly things that have crept up on us. Have a good day biscotti:)

V on 09/19/2011:

Your comment about the 'leech therapy' gave me a good laugh and even though I probably won't say anything to the lady in question (who annoyingly is one of my supervisors, despite being 20 years younger than me) but it will make me grin just thinking about the 'leech therapy' when I set eyes on her, and she will always be wondering what the heck I am smirking about :-)

Hope you took your walk/job outside with the nice weather. I love this time of year when it cools just slightly. Have a good one!

moogy on 09/16/2011:
I am so glad that you got your walk/job in even though you were feeling low. Enjoy the weather and I hope you get more tomorrow. Although weather is a sore subject with me at the moment. Can you believe 87 degrees three weeks into Spring, bit rude!!
